The Earth Will Appear As The Garden Of Eden, Terry Ball Oct 2019

The Earth Will Appear As The Garden Of Eden, Terry Ball

BYU Studies

The Earth Will Appear as the Garden of Eden is a collection of essays designed to introduce, review, illustrate, and promote research and scholarship on the environmental history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The book well accomplishes these purposes in an honest and engaging fashion. While essays in edited volumes such as this are often uneven in terms of the quality and the contribution they offer, each piece in this work is remarkably well written and significant. As the book’s introduction explains, Latter-day Saint environmental history is a relatively new discipline, ripe with opportunities and avenues …

Into Arabia: Lehi And Sariah’S Escape From Jerusalem, Warren P. Aston Oct 2019

Into Arabia: Lehi And Sariah’S Escape From Jerusalem, Warren P. Aston

BYU Studies

In his exhaustively reasoned paper “Dating the Departure of Lehi from Jerusalem,” Jeffrey Chadwick moved the discussion of the timing of the Lehite departure significantly further. Those like myself, who have long assumed that the Book of Mormon’s dating for the departure (about six hundred years before Christ’s birth) is simply a round, approximate number, now have additional reasons to see that the dating may, in fact, be literal and that a definitive year for the event might be within reach.

State & Federal Reports and Publications

The following report summarizes a vulnerability assessment conducted for that portion of the State Highway System (SHS) located in Caltrans District 1. The vulnerability study had three objectives: (1) Understand the types of weather-related and longer-term climate change events that will likely occur with greater frequency and intensity in future years, (2) Conduct a vulnerability assessment to determine those Caltrans assets vulnerable to various climate-influenced natural hazards, and (3) Develop a method to prioritize candidate projects for actions that are responsive to climate change concerns, when financial resources become available.

Mapping 123 Million Neonatal, Infant And Child Deaths Between 2000 And 2017, Roy Burstein, Simon I. Hay, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, 556 Co-Authors Oct 2019

Mapping 123 Million Neonatal, Infant And Child Deaths Between 2000 And 2017, Roy Burstein, Simon I. Hay, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, 556 Co-Authors

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Since 2000, many countries have achieved considerable success in improving child survival, but localized progress remains unclear. To inform efforts towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.2—to end preventable child deaths by 2030—we need consistently estimated data at the subnational level regarding child mortality rates and trends. Here we quantified, for the period 2000–2017, the subnational variation in mortality rates and number of deaths of neonates, infants and children under 5 years of age within 99 low- and middle-income countries using a geostatistical survival model. We estimated that 32% of children under 5 in these countries lived in districts that …

"A Miss Is As Good As A Mile": Examining Social Distance As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In Kentucky, Anna K. Davidson Oct 2019

"A Miss Is As Good As A Mile": Examining Social Distance As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In Kentucky, Anna K. Davidson

Honors Theses

This paper examines social distance and how it relates to academic performance for students in Kentucky high schools. To perform this examination, I ran a series of bivariate regressions of student performance scores and differing variables that account for social distance such as race and/or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, types of classes offered in a school, and, primarily, location of the school. Results showed that as the number of students of color enrolled at a school increases, the gap in performance between groups of traditionally underserved students and non-underserved students increases. This gap also increases as more students are enrolled in …

Pacts 1.0: A Crowdsourced Reporting Standard For Paleoclimate Data, Kristine Delong Oct 2019

Pacts 1.0: A Crowdsourced Reporting Standard For Paleoclimate Data, Kristine Delong

Faculty Publications

The progress of science is tied to the standardization of measurements, instruments, and data. This is especially true in the Big Data age, where analyzing large data volumes critically hinges on the data being standardized. Accordingly, the lack of community-sanctioned data standards in paleoclimatology has largely precluded the benefits of Big Data advances in the field. Building upon recent efforts to standardize the format and terminology of paleoclimate data, this article describes the Paleoclimate Community reporTing Standard (PaCTS), a crowdsourced reporting standard for such data. PaCTS captures which information should be included when reporting paleoclimate data, with the goal of …

Cultivating Moral Imagination Through Deliberative Pedagogy: Reframing Immigration Deliberation For Student Engagement Across Differences. A Response To "Deliberating Public Policy Issues With Adolescents: Classroom Dynamics And Sociocultural Considerations", Lisa Weasel

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In “Deliberating Public Policy Issues with Adolescents,” the authors described what they determine to be an unsuccessful attempt at deliberative pedagogy on the topic of immigration in three high school classrooms that differed demographically. Specifically, the authors observed that students failed to engage with evidence, stuck with their initial viewpoints, and only listened politely to those with different views, rather than interacting across differences to reach consensus. While student positionality, as the authors suggest, is important to take into account, there may be ways to reorient deliberations on “wicked problems” such as immigration, which are by their nature prone to …

Intensive Livestock Production Causing Antibiotic Pollution In The Yinma River Of Northeast China, Hanyu Ju, Sijia Li, Y. Jun Xu, Guangxin Zhang, Jiquan Zhang Oct 2019

Intensive Livestock Production Causing Antibiotic Pollution In The Yinma River Of Northeast China, Hanyu Ju, Sijia Li, Y. Jun Xu, Guangxin Zhang, Jiquan Zhang

Faculty Publications

Antibiotics are increasingly used in livestock production in rural China, raising concerns over pollution and health risk in countryside waterways. The Yinma River Basin in China's far northeast is an agriculture-dominated area mixed with a densely populated province capitol city, providing a suitable area for investigating the influence of a typical land use mix in Northeast China on riverine antibiotic levels and transport. In this study, we sampled water along the Yinma River from upstream to downstream in a wet and a dry season and analyzed the samples for two popularly used antibiotics, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and norfloxacin (NOR). The goal …

Response Of Water Resources To Future Climate Change In A High-Latitude River Basin, Peng Qi, Guangxin Zhang, Yi Jun Xu, Zhikun Xia, Ming Wang

Faculty Publications

Global water resources are affected by climate change as never before. However, it is still unclear how water resources in high latitudes respond to climate change. In this study, the water resource data for 2021-2050 in the Naoli River Basin, a high-latitude basin in China, are calculated by using the SWAT-Modflow Model and future climate scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. The results show a decreasing trend. When compared to the present, future streamflow is predicted to decrease by 2.73 × 108 m3 in 2021-2035 and by 1.51 × 108 m3 in 2036-2050 in the RCP4.5 scenario, and by 8.16 × 108 …

Dam Effects On Downstream Riparian Wetlands: The Nenjiang River, Northeast China, Yuexin Zheng, Guangxin Zhang, Yanfeng Wu, Y. Jun Xu, Changlei Dai

Faculty Publications

Many studies have found that damming a river can change downstream hydrology, sediment transport, channel morphology, and fish habitat. However, little is known about river dam effects on downstream riparian wetland dynamics and their quantitative relationship with hydrological alterations. In this study, hydrological time series and wetland distribution data spanning nearly 40 years (1978-2016) before and after the construction of a large dam in 2005 across the Nenjiang River in Northeast China were used to reveal the impact of dam on the downstream discharge regime and wetland degradation. Hydro-statistical and stepwise multiple regression analyses were performed to quantify the relationship …

Climate And Plant Trait Strategies Determine Tree Carbon Allocation To Leaves And Mediate Future Forest Productivity, Anna T. Trugman, Leander D.L. Anderegg, Brett T. Wolfe, Benjamin Birami, Nadine K. Ruehr, Matteo Detto, Megan K. Bartlett, William R.L. Anderegg Oct 2019

Climate And Plant Trait Strategies Determine Tree Carbon Allocation To Leaves And Mediate Future Forest Productivity, Anna T. Trugman, Leander D.L. Anderegg, Brett T. Wolfe, Benjamin Birami, Nadine K. Ruehr, Matteo Detto, Megan K. Bartlett, William R.L. Anderegg

Faculty Publications

Forest leaf area has enormous leverage on the carbon cycle because it mediates both forest productivity and resilience to climate extremes. Despite widespread evidence that trees are capable of adjusting to changes in environment across both space and time through modifying carbon allocation to leaves, many vegetation models use fixed carbon allocation schemes independent of environment, which introduces large uncertainties into predictions of future forest responses to atmospheric CO2 fertilization and anthropogenic climate change. Here, we develop an optimization-based model, whereby tree carbon allocation to leaves is an emergent property of environment and plant hydraulic traits. Using a combination of …

Life Beyond The Grave: Christian Interfaith Perspectives, Alec Joseph Harding Oct 2019

Life Beyond The Grave: Christian Interfaith Perspectives, Alec Joseph Harding

BYU Studies

As suggested in the title, Life beyond the Graveis a compilation of perspectives about the afterlife from a range of Christian denominations. The book’s contents were taken from a 2016 academic conference hosted at Brigham Young University. Titled “Beyond the Grave: Christian Interfaith Perspectives,” the ecumenical conference was designed to build understanding among Christian groups. Editor Robert L. Millet noted on the conference, “There has been no effort whatsoever to ignore theological differences between the various traditions, nor was it ever expected that a presenter compromise in the slightest what he or she holds to be true. . . …

African American Disparities In Healthcare, Emma E. Bedell Oct 2019

African American Disparities In Healthcare, Emma E. Bedell

Student Publications

African Americans constantly experience disparities in health care due to various factors. They typically face differences in insurance coverage, quality of care, geographic variation, and stereotyping by providers. These social inequalities are ultimately inevitable, however; changes need to be made to better the care that Black patients receive. The differences Black men and women receive in healthcare can put their life in danger or even give them unnecessary medical treatment. There is no simple solution to fix this problem, but action needs to be taken immediately.

Making Sense Of The City: Public Spaces In The Philippines, Remmon E. Barbaza Oct 2019

Making Sense Of The City: Public Spaces In The Philippines, Remmon E. Barbaza

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

Making sense of the City is a collection of essays from scholars in the humanities and the social sciences examining the city within the Philippine context. With Metro Manila bursting at the seams, as tensions continue to intensify and more intractable problems arise than those that are being solved, it becomes a matter of survival for all stakeholders to come together and shape the future of the city.

The City As Illusion And Promise, Remmon E. Barbaza Oct 2019

The City As Illusion And Promise, Remmon E. Barbaza

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

In The City as Illusion and Promise, the author examines the claim (by Henri Lefebvre, and later David Harvey) that the city no longer exists, at least as we know it. What we have instead is merely an illusion, something that Martin Heidegger also implies in some of his later writings, notably his seminal work on the essence of technology. In confronting such an extreme proposition, the author first raises a conceptual problem: Is the city a city insofar as it is not a province? And vice versa? But the conceptual problematic of course is also manifested in actual material …

Boilerplate Indignity, Erik Encarnacion Oct 2019

Boilerplate Indignity, Erik Encarnacion

Indiana Law Journal

Commentators have long tried to sound the alarm about boilerplate contracts, pointing out threats ranging from the loss of privacy rights to the erosion of public law and democratic self-governance. This Article argues that this list of concerns misses something important: that imposing certain boilerplate terms on individuals is incompatible with their dignity. After explaining and defending the conception of dignity presupposed here, this Article shows how boilerplate accountability waivers—like arbitration clauses—prevent people from accessing the distinctive dignity-vindicating role of courts and degrade their status as legal persons. And because governments may legitimately protect dignity interests, proposed reforms like the …

Rivera-Monroy, Courtney Elliton, Siddhartha Narra, Ehab Meselhe, Xiaochen Zhao, Eric White, Charles E. Sasser, Jenneke M. Visser, Xuelian Meng, Hongqing Wang, Zuo Xue, Fernando Jaramillo

Faculty Publications

Coastal Louisiana hosts 37% of the coastal wetland area in the conterminous US, including one of the deltaic coastal regions more susceptible to the synergy of human and natural impacts causing wetland loss. As a result of the construction of flood protection infrastructure, dredging of channels across wetlands for oil/gas exploration and maritime transport activities, coastal Louisiana has lost approximately 4900 km2 of wetland area since the early 1930s. Despite the economic relevance of both wetland biomass and net primary productivity (NPP) as ecosystem services, there is a lack of vegetation simulation models to forecast the trends of those functional …
