“Not Just Boring Adult Stuff”: Issue-Based And Critical Pedagogies For Civic And Political Learning In Welsh Primary Classrooms, Sioned V. Hughes
“Not Just Boring Adult Stuff”: Issue-Based And Critical Pedagogies For Civic And Political Learning In Welsh Primary Classrooms, Sioned V. Hughes
Democracy & Education
This article explores how issue-based and critically orientated approaches to civic education support the development of political understanding, agency, and voice among primary school children in Wales. Drawing on the principles of critical pedagogy and transformative learning, the study investigates how teachers and pupils engage with political ideas through issue-based inquiry within the framework of the Curriculum for Wales (2022). Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and student focus groups across four diverse Welsh primary schools. Using constructivist grounded theory approach, the analysis identified four interrelated themes: making politics accessible, negotiating discomfort, developing voice and agency, and navigating …

Young Children’S Civicness: A Close Look At Membership And Community, Katherina A. Payne, Sunmin Lee, Molly E. Mcmanus
Democracy & Education
As one of the first communities outside of young children’s private spheres of family, scholars consistently position school as an ideal space for civic education. At its core, civic education helps young children cultivate communities that support broader societal structures and mores. As children negotiate new constellations of people within a place, we wondered, what are some ways in which young children construct their membership in the initial civic communities that schools purport to cultivate? Drawing on data from a yearlong ethnographic study of three classrooms in a Head Start in a large city in Texas, we examine how children …
“The Blue Party? No, Wait, Is There Really A Blue Party?” A Study Of Young Norwegian Children’S Perceptions Of Politics, Stine Johansen Utler
“The Blue Party? No, Wait, Is There Really A Blue Party?” A Study Of Young Norwegian Children’S Perceptions Of Politics, Stine Johansen Utler
Democracy & Education
The study investigates Norwegian primary school children's immediate responses to “What do you think of when you hear the word ‘politics’?” It examines children’s perceptions of the concept of politics, their emphasis, and how they communicate their perceptions, providing information about children’s political socialization, knowledge, and understanding as well as early conceptual learning. The data come from group interviews with 36 children (20 second-graders and 16 fourth-graders). The study was not longitudinal but emphasized differences in the content of children’s perceptions. The analysis identifies four different categories of children`s perceptions. These vary according to their emphasis, their apparent associative political …
Exploring Border Rhetoric, Resistance, And The American Dream: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' First House Address, Candice L. Ruh Phd, Cassandra Hightower
Exploring Border Rhetoric, Resistance, And The American Dream: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' First House Address, Candice L. Ruh Phd, Cassandra Hightower
Feminist Pedagogy
Border rhetoric can be a “muddy” topic for undergraduates, as borders are often taught as fixed, factual lines that divide places and people. However, from a communication perspective, borders are fluid, symbolic, and socially constructed. This difference between viewing borders as physical dividers versus rhetorical constructs creates a valuable opportunity for students to think critically about how meaning is shaped by borders of land, language, and identity. This original teaching activity uses Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ (D-NY) first House speech—the most-watched C-SPAN video within 12 hours of release (Gajanan, 2019)—as a central case. It invites students to analyze a key moment …

Edited by Ian Ona Johnson and Robert Clemm
Reviewed by: Dr. Ryan Wadle, John B. Hattendorf Center for Maritime Historical Research, US Naval War College
In A Violent Peace: A Global Military History of the Interwar Peace, editors Ian Ona Johnson and Robert Clemm challenge the myth of a tranquil interlude between the world wars by revealing a landscape of persistent and widespread conflict. Spanning four continents, the book uncovers forgotten wars, ideological clashes, and military transformations that shaped the global order long before 1939. This compelling volume reframes the interwar years as a violent and formative era, essential …
The Kashmir Conflict After The Abrogation Of Articles 370 And 35a Of The Indian Constitution: Geopolitical Dynamics And Human Security Implications, Rizwan Ali
Dissertations and Theses
The abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution on August 5, 2019, revoked the special autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) under the Indian administration. It further bifurcated it into two Union Territories under central Indian control. The move came amid a severe security lockdown and communication blackout that lasted for months. It was followed by instrumental legal, social, and economic developments that directly affected the area’s disputed status and the human rights of its residents. This research examines the geopolitical and human security implications of the abrogation and subsequent developments through a qualitative, analytical design, integrating Edward …

The Geography Of Faces, Faith Abraham
The Geography Of Faces, Faith Abraham
be Still
The Geography of Faces takes its title from the idea that a face, seen across decades, becomes a kind of landscape—something you learn to read not at a glance but through accumulated return visits. For Dr. Vasquez, an older physician who has seen so much, her patients' faces are the territory she has spent a lifetime learning to navigate.
The patients are chosen to represent different dimensions of that longevity. They show affection built on years of small battles, continuity across a family, autonomy that is respected. Together, these patients make the case that primary care is less about problems …

Flexible-Mode Multi-Skilled Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Setup Times: Application In The Oil And Gas Industry, Safinaz M. El Dawody
Theses and Dissertations
Turnaround maintenance (TAM) in the petroleum refining sector requires coordinating geographically dispersed project portfolios under stringent resource, schedule, and budget constraints. Conventional scheduling models treat tasks in isolation, failing to account for shared resources, crew fatigue, or inter-site transit. To bridge this gap, this study introduces and empirically validates a Flexible-Mode Multi-Skilled Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem with Setup Times (FM-MS-RCPSP-ST). Applied to a real-world portfolio of 76 TAM projects across five governorates in Egypt, the framework is operationalized through an 11-stage pipeline integrating NSGA-II multi-objective optimization, GIS-based routing, and 500-trial Monte Carlo disruption simulations.
Results demonstrate that incorporating mandatory crew-rest …
The Informal Impact Of The Headscarf Ban On Veiled Students’ Everyday University Experiences In Paris, Farah K. Lotfy
The Informal Impact Of The Headscarf Ban On Veiled Students’ Everyday University Experiences In Paris, Farah K. Lotfy
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the informal impact of the 2004 headscarf ban on the everyday university experiences of veiled students in Paris. Although the ban applies formally to public schools rather than universities, the wider social climate surrounding laïcité and the veil continues to influence how veiled students experience visibility, belonging, and participation in higher education.
Using a qualitative approach based primarily on semi-structured interviews, supported by informal observations conducted within university spaces in Paris, the study explores how exclusion is experienced through stereotypes, scrutiny, social discomfort, self-monitoring, and anticipation of discrimination rather than through formal university policy. The research focuses …
Parental Gender Bias In Youth Employment Standards: Evidence From Upper Egypt, Mahmoud Saeed
Parental Gender Bias In Youth Employment Standards: Evidence From Upper Egypt, Mahmoud Saeed
Theses and Dissertations
Youth unemployment remains a critical challenge in Egypt, with female labor force participation among the lowest globally. While structural factors such as limited job creation and public sector contraction are well-documented, the role of family-level decision-making in constraining women's labor market entry has received limited quantitative attention. This thesis examines parental gender bias in employment standards in Upper Egypt, investigating whether and how parents impose systematically different job requirements for daughters compared to sons. Using primary survey data from 17,284 unemployed youth aged 18-35 across six governorates, paired with responses from their parents, this study analyzes parental preferences across six …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Dimerelloid brachiopods with patchy but cosmopolitan geographical distribution, including the Late Triassic (Norian) Halorella amphitoma, offer a unique opportunity to identify and reconstruct specific palaeo-microenvironments in the geological past. The group and this species are commonly associated with hydrocarbon seepage in Palaeozoic and Mesozoic records. In addition, mass occurrences of H. amphitoma are also known from neptunian dykes and palaeokarst cavities on the vast Late Triassic Dachstein carbonate platform. It has been suggested that the shells were either washed into these structures or the animals were living directly there in a dark environment, but normal marine conditions were implied for …

(Re)Claiming Homeplace: Dance As Embodied Resistance & Healing For Health & Spatial Justice, Preeya G. Kannan
University Honors Theses
This thesis argues that dance functions as both an upstream public health intervention and a form of radical spatial resistance; creating healing, agency, and belonging among historically marginalized communities. Drawing on bell hooks' concept of homeplace, Jasbir Puar's assemblage theory, Nancy Krieger's eco-social theory, and Katherine McKittrick's Black geographies, I position the body as both an ecological and political landscape shaped by histories of colonialism, racial capitalism, displacement, and resilience.
Through this community-based participatory research study, Homeplace, I explore dance as a form of social prescription that centers liberation rather than pathology. Movement is often reduced in public health discourse …

The Effect Of The (Predict–Observe–Explain) Strategy On The Achievement Of Eleventh-Grade Students In Kurdish Grammar, Sabah Jalil Khaleel
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The present study aims to investigate the effect of the (Predict–Observe–Explain) strategy on the achievement of eleventh- grade students in Kurdish grammar. To achieve this objective, the researcher selected a sample of eleventh-grade students from governmental daytime secondary schools in Kirkuk Governorate. The sample consisted of (50) students distributed into two classes. Class (A) represented the experimental group, comprising (25) students who were taught using the (Predict–Observe–Explain) strategy, while class (B) represented the control group, comprising (25) students who were taught using the traditional method. The researcher ensured equivalence between the two groups in several variables, including intelligence test scores, …

Ethnography Of Languages Among Muslim Arabs Geographer, Alia Miri Qassem, Magda Jassim Hussein
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Geographical works and writings based on travel and field study are among the most important sources for researching the cultural characteristics of a society, its way of life, and its lifestyle based on customs and traditions. Regarding the description of countries, the characteristics of their people, and their way of life, this laid the foundation for a research methodology known as the ethnographic method. This confirms that the Muslim Arabs were the first to lay its foundations, which begin with observation and repetition of observation, then collecting information and linking some of it together. This is the field of modern …

The City Of Ābah During The Abbasid Era (132–656 Ah / 749–1258 Ce) A Historical Study, Abeer Mohsin Jawad Kadhim
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Abeh, also known as Aveh, is a village located 70 kilometers west of Qom, on the outskirts of the area currently known as Jafar Abad, on the old Saveh Road, 30 kilometers away. Abeh was the first center of Shi’ism in Iran. Its people embraced Shi’ism due to their close relationship with the city of Qom. Since the third century AH, the city of Abeh has become a focus of attention for rulers of that era and others. The research is divided into two sections: Section One: Abeh in language and terminology, geographical location, religious aspects (including Shi’ism in Abeh), …

La Conceptualisation Du Temps À Travers Les Métaphores Dans Le Parler De Zayan : Approche Cognitive, Amenzou El Mostafa, Brahim Oumeraouch
Journal of Amazigh Studies

Journal of Amazigh Studies
Indigeneity In The Diaspora: Amazigh Women In The United States, Heide Castaneda
Indigeneity In The Diaspora: Amazigh Women In The United States, Heide Castaneda
Journal of Amazigh Studies
As people migrate elsewhere, they create new forms of solidarity and citizenship through articulations of their Indigenous identity. The activities and identity formations of migrant Imazighen have long been integral to the Amazigh movement, often producing and propelling forward ideas and practices that influence politics in their North African homelands. At the same time, migration is a key driver of shifts in gender roles and identity. The gendered dimension of Indigenous experience remains largely underexplored and is the subject of this article. Amazigh women, like other Indigenous women around the globe, are frequently portrayed as guardians of cultural and linguistic …
Representations Of Women Safeguarding Living Cultural Heritage For The Future In 21st Century Kabyle Cinema, Sheila Petty
Representations Of Women Safeguarding Living Cultural Heritage For The Future In 21st Century Kabyle Cinema, Sheila Petty
Journal of Amazigh Studies
This article examines cinematic representations of how some Kabyle women relate to and shape claims to Amazigh (Kabyle) land, language, tangible and intangible cultural heritage; how they navigate and safeguard cultural memory; and how this is depicted in three Kabyle films: La Langue de Zahra/ Zahra’s Mother Tongue (Fatima Sissani, France/Algeria, 2011); Nnuba (Sonia At Qasi-Kessi, Algeria, 2019; and Azar/Racine/Root (Malik Bourkache Daoud, Algeria, 2023). The article also probes how the filmmakers use tangible cultural heritage (documentary film) to document, transpose, and transmit intangible cultural heritage (memories, poetry, song, stories). Through an analysis of the narrative form and cinematic style …
Trade Liberalization & Local Labor Markets: Evidence From The U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, Josephine Jungha Lee
Trade Liberalization & Local Labor Markets: Evidence From The U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, Josephine Jungha Lee
Economics Undergraduate Senior Theses
This paper examines the local labor market effects of tariff reductions under the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS). While free trade agreements are often evaluated through aggregate gains, their adjustment costs may be concentrated in specific industries and local labor markets. This paper constructs a shift-share measure of KORUS exposure by combining national industry-level tariff reductions with pre-KORUS commuting zone (CZ) industrial composition, then estimates how more exposed CZs changed after implementation. The results show that greater KORUS exposure is associated with statistically significant declines in employment, employment-to-population ratios, labor force participation, and working-age population, alongside increases in unemployment. These …
Automatic Glossing In Under-Resourced Languages: Case Studies In Bribri And Cook Islands Māori, Carter D. Anderson
Automatic Glossing In Under-Resourced Languages: Case Studies In Bribri And Cook Islands Māori, Carter D. Anderson
Linguistics Undergraduate Senior Theses
Interlinear glossing is a major task in Indigenous language documentation. In this paper, I explore how effectively two Large Language Models, ByT5 and Gemini 2.5 Flash, can produce interlinear glossed text. I also examine how prompting an LLM with different types of information (dictionary entries, other training samples, and translations) can augment model performance. I apply these models to two under-resourced Indigenous languages: Bribri, which is morphologically complex from Costa Rica, and Cook Islands Māori, which has a simpler morphology and is from the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean. ByT5 exhibits much better performance when glossing Cook Islands Māori …
Computational Contrast Of Argument-Adjusting Operations In Cook Islands Māori: An Initial Exploration, Daisy Li
Linguistics Undergraduate Senior Theses
This paper presents the first corpus study of the semantic and syntactic features of active, actor emphatic, and passive constructions in Cook Islands Māori, a Polynesian language of the Cook Islands. Using computational techniques, including Universal Dependencies parsing, this project identifies and evaluates these constructions in corpus data. The actor emphatic construction is of particular interest because it is only found in Eastern Polynesian languages. However, it has historically been difficult to study due to its cross-linguistic variability and relative infrequency. This study compiles, to my knowledge, the largest corpus of Cook Islands Māori actor emphatic sentences to date, analyzing …

Destination “Burning River”: Restoration And Placemaking In A Rust Belt City, Mia Compton-Engle
Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses
In 1969, the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio caught fire from industrial pollution. Media narratives reframed the river fire as a symbol of environmental degradation, discursively transforming the Cuyahoga River from a place of industrial sacrifice to a place deserving ecological stewardship. Consequently, the river fire catalyzed the modern American environmental movement and local urban river restoration, materially transforming the Cuyahoga River from a place of industrial waste to a place of natural beauty and socioeconomic opportunity. Thus, urban river restoration presents an opportunity for novel placemaking: a local microcosm of the global turn towards urban sustainability. However, there is …

Custom Sbc Gps Tracking And Geocaching Carputer Software Development And Implementation, Joshua A. Davis
University Honors Theses
This thesis argues that hardware-integrated capstone projects develop software engineering skills that traditional coursework cannot replicate. A team of eight developers built a GPS tracking system on a Raspberry Pi 4 over two academic terms, integrating real-time position streaming, the APRS amateur radio protocol for network-independent location sharing, and PostGIS spatial queries for "new road" detection. The system implements SmartBeaconing for adaptive GPS data reduction, achieving approximately 80% storage savings while preserving route fidelity. The project exposed challenges absent from classroom assignments: hardware debugging without stack traces, cross-layer integration failures, and coordination overhead when deploying to unfamiliar architecture; demonstrating that …

Human Wisdom And Artificial Intelligence: Role Of Liberal Arts Education In A Neoliberal World, Purna Chandra Bhusal
Critical Humanities
Neoliberalism is an economic and political ideology that originated in the 1930s and 40s, gained momentum in the late 70s and 80s, and peaked in the 90s and 2000s. Since its inception, neoliberalism has promoted a free-market economy with minimal state intervention, granting individuals the freedom to compete and succeed. Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, the neoliberal system has invested in, incorporated, and promoted Artificial Intelligence (AI), valuing an AI-enhanced corporate ethos. As a result, the success of higher education is generally measured by the quantity of technologically sound, market-ready, AI-trained human capital it produces for industry. …
