งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ (1)​ เพื่อศึกษาอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยที่ถูกถ่ายทอดผ่านการเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดประกวดมิสยูนิเวิร์ส 2018 ในประเทศไทย (2)​ เพื่อศึกษาการรับรู้ของผู้ชมชาวไทยและผู้ชมชาวต่างชาติที่มีต่อการสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทย โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ด้วยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา (Content analysis)​ จากเทปบันทึกการถ่ายทอดสด การประกวดมิสยูนิเวิร์ส​ 2018 รอบชิงชนะเลิศ​ และใช้วิธีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก (In Depth interview)​ กับผู้จัดการประกวด และผู้เชี่ยวชาญเกี่ยวกับอัตลักษณ์ไทย​ร่วมกับ​การวิเคราะห์เอกสาร (Documentary analysis)​ จากแหล่งข้อมูลที่เป็น​สื่อสังคมออนไลน์​ ได้แก่ เว็บไซต์ ยูทูบ และเฟซบุ๊ก​ ผลการวิจัย 1. การเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดประกวดมิสยูนิเวิร์ส 2018 ประเทศไทยนำเสนออัตลักษณ์ทางด้านวัฒนธรรมมากกว่าอัตลักษณ์ทางด้านธรรมชาติ ผ่านวิธีการสื่อสาร 5 รูปแบบ คือ วีดิทัศน์ การแสดง กราฟิกแบ็กกราวนด์ วัตถุที่จับต้องได้ และบุคคล โดยการสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยแบ่งได้เป็น 2 ลักษณะ คือ 1. ลักษณะอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยแบบดั้งเดิม เช่น สถานที่ทางธรรมชาติ ภาษาไทย 2. ลักษณะที่ไม่ใช่อัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยแบบดั้งเดิม เช่น การไหว้ ดนตรีไทย นาฏศิลป์ไทย มวยไทย ประเพณีลอยโคม ช่อดอกไม้ จิตรกรรมลายกระหนกไทย สถาปัตยกรรมไทย เครื่องประดับไหล่ช่อฟ้า ทั้งนี้ความเป็นไทยที่ถูกคัดเลือกให้นำเสนอบนเวทีระดับโลกล้วนเป็นวัฒนธรรมหลวงหรือประเพณีหลวง (Great tradition) ซึ่งเป็นวัฒนธรรมระดับชาติหรือเป็นที่รู้จักกันดีและแสดงความเป็นตัวตนของชาตินั้น ๆ 2. ผู้ชมชาวไทยและผู้ชมชาวต่างชาติมีการรับรู้และทัศนคติแตกต่างกัน โดยผู้ชมชาวไทยสามารถรับรู้และเข้าใจอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยได้มากกว่าผู้ชมชาวต่างชาติ ในภาพรวมผู้ชมทั่วโลกมีทัศนคติที่ดีต่อการเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดประกวดมิสยูนิเวิร์ส 2018 ที่ประเทศไทยเป็นเจ้าภาพ ในขณะเดียวกันผู้ชมชาวไทยมีทัศนคติต่อการสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยแตกต่างกัน โดยส่วนใหญ่ชื่นชมการนำเสนออัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยบนเวทีระดับโลก แต่ผู้ชมชาวไทยบางกลุ่มไม่เห็นด้วยกับการสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นไทยที่ไม่ใช่ดั้งเดิมและลดทอนความเป็นไทย เช่น เครื่องประดับไหล่ “ช่อฟ้า” ในรอบชุดว่ายน้ำ และ กราฟิกแบ็กกราวนด์ลายกระหนกไทยที่ลดทอดลายละเอียดที่สื่อถึงเอกลักษณ์ไทยลงไป

วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้ศึกษาการประกอบสร้าง “ผู้หญิงในอุดมคติ” ของสิงคโปร์สมัยสร้างชาติระหว่างทศวรรษ 1950–1980 โดยรัฐบาลพรรคกิจประชาภายใต้การนำของลีกวนยู โดยจะวิเคราะห์จากนโยบายเรื่องผู้หญิง และการออกกฎหมายที่มีส่วนในกำหนดบทบาทหน้าที่ทางเพศสภาพของหญิงและชายในสิงคโปร์ รวมถึงการต่อรองระหว่างรัฐและผู้หญิงสิงคโปร์ในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าวที่กระแสสิทธิสตรีกำลังมีอิทธิพลและนำไปสู่การปรับเปลี่ยนอุดมคติรัฐเกี่ยวกับผู้หญิงของสิงคโปร์ วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้จะชี้ให้เห็นว่าการจัดการความสัมพันธ์ทางเพศสภาพระหว่างชายหญิงในพื้นที่ครอบครัวเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกระบวนการสร้างชาติสิงคโปร์ หลักจริยศาสตร์แบบขงจื๊อที่มีลักษณะแบบปิตาธิปไตยคือแนวคิดสำคัญที่รัฐบาลสิงคโปร์ใช้ในการกำหนดนโยบายเพศสภาพและดำเนินนโยบายเกี่ยวกับผู้หญิง ผู้หญิงถูกกำหนดให้แสดงบทบาทในฐานะแม่และเมีย ส่วนผู้ชายถูกคาดหมายให้ทำงานนอกบ้าน ทั้งนี้ ผู้หญิงในฐานะแม่และเมียตามอุดมคติรัฐในบริบทการสร้างชาติต้องมีคุณลักษณะอันพึงประสงค์อย่างน้อย 3 ประการ ได้แก่ มีการศึกษาดี มีทักษะและความสามารถในการประกอบอาชีพเพื่อตอบสนองนโยบายเศรษฐกิจ และเป็นมารดาที่มีคุณภาพของเยาวชน อย่างไรก็ดี ภายใต้ความเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคม โอกาสทางการศึกษาสำหรับผู้หญิงที่เพิ่มขึ้น และกระแสสิทธิสตรี อุดมคติรัฐเกี่ยวกับผู้หญิงที่ประกอบสร้างขึ้นโดยหลักจริยศาสตร์แบบขงจื๊อที่เป็นปิตาธิปไตยก็ได้ถูกต่อรองจากผู้หญิงสิงคโปร์ด้วย

การศึกษาวิจัยเรื่อง “การสื่อสารการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์ของไอดอลใต้ดินไทย และการมีส่วนร่วมเชิงการตลาดของผู้ติดตาม” มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา (1) ทัศนคติของผู้ติดตามไอดอลใต้ดินไทยต่อการสื่อสารการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์ของไอดอลใต้ดิน (2) พฤติกรรมการมีส่วนร่วมเชิงการตลาดของผู้ติดตามไอดอลใต้ดิน (3) ความสัมพันธ์ของทัศนคติต่อการสื่อสารการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์ต่อพฤติกรรมการมีส่วนร่วมเชิงการตลาดของผู้ติดตามไอดอลใต้ดิน และ (4) ความสัมพันธ์ของทัศนคติเกี่ยวกับการสื่อสารการตลาดของไอดอลใต้ดินไทยต่อการสื่อสารการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์ งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ โดยแจกแบบสอบถามไปยังกลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 418 คนที่เป็นผู้ติดตามไอดอลใต้ดินไทย ผลการศึกษาวิจัยครั้งนี้พบว่า (1) ผู้ที่ตอบแบบสอบถามส่วนใหญ่ เป็นเพศชาย ช่วงอายุ 18 – 25 ปี เป็นนักเรียน/นักศึกษา ระดับศึกษาขั้นปริญญาตรี ที่มีรายได้ต่อเดือนมีจำนวนต่ำกว่า 10,000 บาท โดยพบว่ามีปริมาณการซื้อสินค้าไอดอลใต้ดิน 2-3 ครั้ง ต่อเดือนครั้งละ 1,001 ถึง 2,000 บาท (2) ผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามส่วนใหญ่มีทัศนคติต่อการสื่อสารการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์ในระดับมากทั้งในปัจจัย ความเชื่อใจ(Trust) ความผูกพัน(Commitment) และการสื่อสาร(Communication) และมีทัศนคติต่อกิจกรรมทางการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์ส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในระดับมาก โดยมีทัศนคติต่อการสื่อสารด้านความเชื่อใจ(Trust) มากที่สุด (3) ผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามมีพฤติกรรมการมีส่วนร่วมเชิงการตลาดของไอดอลใต้ดินอยู่ในระดับมาก และรวมถึงมีพฤติกรรมการซื้ออยู่ในระดับมาก โดยผู้บริโภคให้ความสำคัญกับขั้นตอนของการตระหนักรู้ถึงความต้องการตราสินค้าไอดอลใต้ดินมากที่สุด และสุดท้าย (4) ผลของการทดสอบสมมติฐานที่ 1 พบว่าทัศนคติต่อการสื่อสารการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์มีความสัมพันธ์กับพฤติกรรมการมีส่วนร่วมเชิงการตลาดของผู้ติดตามไอดอลใต้ดินอยู่ในระดับปานกลางอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ 0.01 และมีความสัมพันธ์กันในทางบวกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ และผลการทดสอบสมมติฐานที่ 2 พบว่า ทัศนคติต่อกิจกรรมการสื่อสารการตลาดของไอดอลใต้ดินไทยมีความสัมพันธ์กับการสื่อสารการตลาดเชิงความสัมพันธ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ 0.01 และมีความสัมพันธ์กันในทางบวกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ

Chapman & Huffman suggest that judgments of human superiority underlie our cruelty to animals. It might be useful to examine how such judgments operate within the human community. Children arguably have a potential for developing “superior” capacities but are outperformed on many tasks by animals. There is a continuum of development in children’s capacities. Perhaps there are interspecies evolutionary continua too. This highlights the complexity of reasoning about humans, animals, and moral inclusion.

Perceived control is associated with health throughout adulthood, yet has also been found to decline with age possibly due to age-related experiences of increasing losses and limitations in life circumstances. Perceived control may also be affected by individual personality characteristics, which also predict health through late adulthood. Although previous studies have addressed these associations, research is lacking in examining nuanced associations among personality, perceived control, and health all together as well as age and gender differences in these associations. A major effect of globalization is one that occurs on the self-concept. This is especially the case for young consumers, and particularly for millennials. Despite this cohort’s idiosyncrasies, little attention has been paid to the study of their consumer identities, an important aspect of self-concept. The current research addresses this gap by examining the way millennial consumers’ global and national identities help explain two attitudinal outcomes associated with globalization: materialism and consumer ethnocentrism. Data were collected from millennials in two distinct socio-cultural contexts. Handwritten newspapers appeared in a variety of social contexts in the 19th-century U.S.1 The largest extant portion of 19th-century handwritten newspapers emerged from home and school settings. More far-flung examples include those written aboard ships during exploratory and military voyages. Others were produced within institutions such as hospitals and asylums. Such works were written during times of privation, including life in an army regiment or a prisoner-of-war camp during the Civil War. At other times, handwritten newspapers accompanied efforts at westward settlement and transcontinental railway journeys. NoDAPL was, first and foremost, an Indigenous-led resistance against the construction of a pipeline in North Dakota. It was also a movement that built solidarity, bridging networks between international Indigenous peoples, Black Lives Matter activists, veterans, and feminists. This discourse analysis of social media and digital texts addresses the networked publics, collective identities, social capital, and intersectionality in applying Van Leeuwen’s (2007) understanding of legitimation. Culture and the self form a dynamic system that shapes children’s memories. However, how these two constructs influence specific memory processes still requires further investigation. The present dissertation contains four studies that examined the influences of cultural backgrounds and self-views on children’s memory encoding and delayed retrieval. Participants across four studies were recruited in the year range of 2016 to 2018. A total of 243 Grade 1 and 2 (the younger group) and Grade 3 and 4 (the older group) children participated, with an age range of seven to ten years. This qualitative case study explored the changing relationships and cultural evolution that occurred over the course of the initial year of a principal transition within a private upper school. Collected data included interviews, observations, and documents. All data were reviewed and analyzed in order to understand the experience that the transitioning principal, administrators, faculty, college counselors, and staff encountered during the course of the transition. José del Valle, in his contribution to our “Sociolinguistic Frontiers” series, looks at the intersection of the sociolinguistic study of Spanish in the US and the transformations of Spanish language departments in higher education. Del Valle traces the history of the institutionalization of Spanish teaching and study and its effects on linguistic research’s position within Spanish departments. Shifts in approaches to the use of language in social practice, and the growing demands on language units to act as service departments for language learners, has isolated scholars in those institutional homes from broader integration into sociolinguistic research.

Adult-child interactions vary between cultures. For example, Hispanic parents are characterized by a more adult-centered style of interaction with children, while European American parents are more child-centered. Little is known about the influences cultural differences may have on the ways that Spanish-English bilingual parents speak to their children in each language. To address this question, 17 monolingual Spanish-speaking Hispanic American mothers, 22 monolingual English-speaking European American mothers, and 33 Spanish-English bilingual mothers were videorecorded in toy-play interactions with their children. Appraisal theory posits that the addition of new, relevant, information can alter the outcome of the appraisal process for a given emotional elicitor, such as an animal. The current study aimed to explore whether the addition of animal movement would sufficiently influence the intensity of emotional reactions and action motivation ratings for animals. The current study compared self-reported emotional reactions and self-reported action motivations for still images and videos for six animal categories (snakes, spiders, cockroaches, tortoises, deer, and ducks). Our findings indicate that movement increases the intensity of relevant emotional reactions to cockroaches, tortoises, deer, and ducks, but not …

The concept of learning with small portable computers was developed by Alan Kay in 1972. Since that early conception, scholars, such as Traxler, Sharples, and Soloway are the pioneering scholars who paved the way to a better understanding of the philosophical, pedagogical, and conceptual underpinnings of mobile learning today. In this chapter, an overview is provided to explicate the initial foundations of the emerging field of mobile learning (mlearning). Next, current scientific knowledge is delineated with explicit references to the early scholars. This chapter concludes with a preview of the future research directions in mobile learning.

This study will explore female representation and conceptualization of nature in dystopian narratives by examining dystopian films. The study is guided by film theory and ecofeminism to investigate themes of domination of both nature and women. The main goal is to examine the structure, themes, dialogue, and visuals in the films to explore the underlying essence of dystopian narratives and examine roles of reproduction and motherhood of female characters. The study contributes to previous studies on female and nature representation in media.

Two document cases in the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) Research Library's George Rennar papers contain significant documentation of White supremacist organizations that developed in Oregon during the period between World War I and World War II. In this Research Files article, Shane Burley and Alexander Reid Ross highlight connections found within the collection between the variety of interlinked, racist, and nationalist organizations during that time period. Burley and Ross argue that while “membership numbers remained relatively small, these organizations provided a crucial link to the development of radical right-wing groups during the postwar era.”

This program evaluation project evaluated the validity of a hypothesized model for predicting fieldwork performance using data of 121 occupational therapy students from a single university. The first aim was to evaluate the hypothesized relationships between observed measures (e.g., admission GPAs) and proposed latent factors (e.g., academic achievement) for predictor and outcome variables. Factor analysis of the outcome variable revealed a three-factor structure, measured by 13 items from the Fieldwork Performance Evaluation for the Occupational Therapy Student. Shortening measurement scales can improve the scales’ feasibility, but at the same time, their measurement properties can be affected. This study investigated psychometric properties of the short Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) among occupational therapy students in the United States. The students (n = 120) completed the ASSIST and provided basic socio-demographic and education-related information. Scale structure was examined with Principal Components Analysis (PCA), while consistency between scale items was assessed with Cronbach’s α and inter-item correlations. Three factors were confirmed, but three items showed poor or ambiguous fit with the proposed scales. These items were …

Visible/Invisible: Female Astronauts And Technology In Star Trek: Discovery And National Geographic’S Mars, Amanda R. Keeler

This article examines the newest television programme in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Discovery (2017–) and National Geographic’s part-documentary, part-fictional series Mars (2016–). I argue that Discovery and Mars make visible the depiction of developing technology and a breadth and depth of female astronaut characters, two elements that have been historically marginalised in sf narratives such as Star Trek: The Original Series (1966–9). Discovery and Mars both emphasise the purposeful centrality of female characters and their positions of authority as female astronauts and ship leaders. Radio studies occupies an unusual position within film and media studies. As Journal of Radio & Audio Media Editor, Anne MacLennan (2016) has noted, the area is often recognized as a euphemism for media history. It’s a small sub-discipline that has already been legitimated, yet at the same time has difficulty maintaining visibility within broader media studies discourses. Fewer graduate programs are supporting radio or media history research, with notable exceptions, leading to fewer media historians rising to replace a previous generation that has recently retired. This study explores the experiences of women working as creatives in Mexican advertising creative departments. It is based on 22 in-depth interviews and suggests that these women face significant challenges within the machismo culture, which permeates Mexican advertising creative departments. Mexico plays an important role in global advertising, particularly in Latin America, but in this country female workers only represent five per cent of those working in creative departments. This is the first study focused on Mexican women creatives in advertising, highlighting the confluence of advertising women creatives and Mexican culture. The platformization of households is increasingly possible with the introduction of "intelligent personal assistants" (IPAs) embedded in smart, always-listening speakers and screens, such as Google Home and the Amazon Echo. These devices exemplify Zuboff's "surveillance capitalism" by commodifying familial and social spaces and funneling data into corporate networks. However, the motivations driving the development of these platforms-and the dataveillance they afford-vary: Amazon appears focused on collecting user data to drive personalized sales across its shopping platform, while Google relies on its vast dataveillance infrastructure to build its Al-driven targeted advertising platform. Improving graduation rates of students who have selected and been admitted to engineering majors is a pivotal strategy in supporting national initiatives to increase the number of engineering graduates. Research suggests that the degree to which a student is attached to or belongs to engineering as a discipline better explains persistence-related outcomes than lack of interest and ability. As a result, identity frameworks have proven useful for furthering the understanding of engineering persistence. In this paper, we examine the relationship between undergraduate students’ engineering identity and persistence as an engineering major.
