The Impact Of Dutch Disease: The Case Of Nigeria, Halimat Atinuke Laguda Jan 2019

The Impact Of Dutch Disease: The Case Of Nigeria, Halimat Atinuke Laguda

Masters Theses

Nigeria, over the years, has been showing a rapid appreciation of the domestic currency, a rise in real wages and the service sector and a slow-down in the industrial production which are all signs of presence of Dutch disease which predicts that a country with large natural resource rents may experience a de-industrialization and a lower long term economic growth. This paper analyses the impact of Dutch disease in Nigeria Ordinary Least square method, Two-Stage Least Square and Autoregressive Distributed Lag with a system of equation from 1981 to 2017 and found that the real wage rate emphasizes on the …

Xylan Metabolism By Caulobacter Crescentus, Viet Bui Jan 2019

Xylan Metabolism By Caulobacter Crescentus, Viet Bui

Masters Theses

Bacteria present unique opportunities to explore the molecular mechanisms of nutrient acquisition processes at single cell level under various experimental conditions. Caulobacter crescentus is a gram-negative oligotrophic environmental bacterium with adaptive physiological responses, such as slow growth or complete arrest of cell cycle, presence of sessile and motile progenies with the sessile cells growing stalk to enhance nutrient uptake for growth in low-nutrient conditions. Details of plant polysaccharide-derived carbon compound, such as cellobiose, maltose, and xylose utilization by C. crescentus can be found but molecular details or mechanisms of polysaccharide utilization, such as xylan, has not been reported. Database analyses …

Gifted Education In Elementary Schools, Danielle Wilkinson Jan 2019

Gifted Education In Elementary Schools, Danielle Wilkinson

Masters Theses

Gifted students have enormous potential, yet there are few consistent opportunities for gifted students to receive challenging instruction. Drawing upon literature detailing the history of gifted education nationally and in Illinois, this study sought to find what services were currently offered to Illinois students, and if the opportunities for gifted students were related to a district’s state funding tier. Findings indicated that the elementary gifted services being offered and the ways in which eligibility is determined were inconsistent among districts. In addition, many districts who offer gifted services are using local/community funds in order to provide services regardless of their …

Let's Get Sorted: The Path To Zero Waste At Pomona College, Sara Sherburne Jan 2019

Let's Get Sorted: The Path To Zero Waste At Pomona College, Sara Sherburne

Pomona Senior Theses

This senior thesis in environmental analysis explores the Zero Waste ideal and its practical application to a college campus. Given the growing global trash crisis and its grave environmental, social and economic consequences, the Zero Waste movement argues for a holistic shift from ‘end of pipe’ disposal practices to those that promote the cyclical use of materials, with little-to-no matter ending up in the landfill or incinerator. Cities and colleges around the world have adopted these Zero Waste goals in an effort to function as more sustainable, efficient and moral entities. With a case study of Pomona College, I assess …

"But It's Not Fair!": Effects Of Experimenter Familiarity On Inequity Aversion In Dogs, Kia Radovanovic Jan 2019

"But It's Not Fair!": Effects Of Experimenter Familiarity On Inequity Aversion In Dogs, Kia Radovanovic

Senior Independent Study Theses

Inequity aversion, defined as having a negative reaction to unfair treatment, was considered to be a uniquely human trait for decades but has since been found to exist in a variety of animals, including primates and dogs. Although dogs have been shown to be affected in their decision making based on their familiarity with the humans testing them, this effect had not been previously examined in regard to their responses to inequity aversion. This study aimed to partially replicate the results shown in the first ever study to find inequity aversion in dogs and to further investigate whether their responses …

Extensions And Topological Conditions Of Nj Rings, Meimei Jiang, Yao Wang, Yanli Ren Jan 2019

Extensions And Topological Conditions Of Nj Rings, Meimei Jiang, Yao Wang, Yanli Ren

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A ring $R$ is said to be NJ if $J(R)=N(R)$. This paper mainly studies the relationship between NJ rings and related rings, and investigates the Dorroh extension, the Nagata extension, the Jordan extension, and some other extensions of NJ rings. At the same time, we also prove that if $R$ is a weakly 2-primal $\alpha$-compatible ring with an isomorphism $\alpha$ of $R$, then $R[x;\alpha]$ is NJ; if $R$ is a weakly 2-primal $\delta$-compatible ring with a derivation $\delta$ of $R$, then $R[x;\delta]$ is NJ. Moreover, we consider some topological conditions for NJ rings and show for a NJ ring $R$ …

Degenerate Maximal Hyponormal Differential Operators For The First Order, Meltem Sertbaş, Fati̇h Yilmaz Jan 2019

Degenerate Maximal Hyponormal Differential Operators For The First Order, Meltem Sertbaş, Fati̇h Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, all maximal hyponormal extensions are given for the degenerate first order in the Hilbert space of vector-functions on a finite interval. The extensions are defined in terms of the boundary values. The structure of the spectrum of the maximal hyponormal extensions is also investigated.

On Product Complex Finsler Manifolds, Hongchuan Xia, Qian Wei Jan 2019

On Product Complex Finsler Manifolds, Hongchuan Xia, Qian Wei

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $(M, F)$ be the product complex Finsler manifold of two strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler manifolds $(M_1, F_1)$ and $(M_2, F_2)$ with $F=\sqrt{f(K, H)}$ and $K=F_1^2$, $H=F_2^2$. In this paper, we prove that $(M, F)$ is a weakly Käahler-Finsler (resp. weakly complex Berwald) manifold if and only if $(M_1, F_1)$ and $(M_2, F_2)$ are both weakly Kähler-Finsler (resp. weakly complex Berwald) manifolds, which is independent of the choice of function $f$. Meanwhile, we prove that $(M, F)$ is a complex Landsberg manifold if and only if either $(M_1, F_1)$ and $(M_2, F_2)$ are both complex Landsberg manifolds and $f=c_1K+c_2H$ with …

The Perceived Appeal, Challenge, And Learning Choice For Gifted And Talented Students In Advanced Placement Mathematics Courses, Emma Marie Denise Biggs

Theses and Dissertations

The Advanced Placement program has undergone many changes since its post Sputnik surge when it was designed to accelerate learners. The number of students enrolled in AP courses has swelled, demographics of participants have diversified, and course curriculums and designs have altered. The homogenous Ivy League bound population of gifted and talented students who made up the initial 1,299 students enrolled in the program has morphed into a heterogeneous population of over 2,800,000 students with many learning needs. With the increase in the testing culture of the United States, the focus in education has shifted towards closing the achievement gap …

Chemometric Applications In Fire Debris Analysis: Likelihood Ratios From Naive Bayes And Frequency Of Component And Pyrolysis Product Occurrence, Anuradha Akmeemana Jan 2019

Chemometric Applications In Fire Debris Analysis: Likelihood Ratios From Naive Bayes And Frequency Of Component And Pyrolysis Product Occurrence, Anuradha Akmeemana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the major challenges in fire investigation is the determination of the cause of fire. The fire can be accidental or intentional. The determination of ignitable liquid residue (ILR) from fire debris helps the process and this process is called fire debris analysis in forensic science. This is one of the most complex areas in the field of forensics because of the evaporation of the ILR from the debris and the interference of the substrate matrix with the ILR if present. In the present, the final decisions in fire debris analysis are based on categorical statements and it only …

One of the fastest growing drug problems in the United States is the abuse of opioids (United States Department of Health & Human Services, 2018). With the rising overdose rates, the criminal justice system may offer a pivotal role in the decrease of overdose deaths through opioid overdose recognition and naloxone administration training (World Health Organization, 2014). Training evaluation based on the Effectiveness Theory find significant predictors of training effectiveness and retention to be correlated with the training program, age, and employment tenure (Cowman & McCarthy, 2016). This thesis’ research question is, “Do demographics correlate to training retention for opioid …

Managing Variability In Assembly Lines, Sumanth Gokapai Jan 2019

Managing Variability In Assembly Lines, Sumanth Gokapai

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Every successful company have a diversified product portfolio based on their customer demand. Though products are branded as different variants, versions etc. most of them are similar products with little variations in their features or functions they perform. With the traditional, product centric approach to handle variation, new techniques like Clone and own were implemented in which engineers pick the most similar one available, copy it, make changes to it and present it as a new variant. Even though this approach employs reuse, but the savings occur once and only once. This project discussed how companies can exploit the commonality …

Teaching Writing: Genre Lessons For Teaching Writing In The Homeschool High School Classroom And Beyond, Teagan R. Knoblich Jan 2019

Teaching Writing: Genre Lessons For Teaching Writing In The Homeschool High School Classroom And Beyond, Teagan R. Knoblich

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Most high schoolers in America operate with basic writing skills at best (U.S. Department of Education, 2012). Students who are educated at home, or homeschoolers, may be only marginally better in their writing skills, if at all. A review of materials available to home educators for the instruction of their homeschool students revealed that available writing curricula does not do a good job covering more than a few basic writing forms, such as research and narrative. This creative project aimed to create writing instruction materials that could be used by home educators to teach their high school students how to …

The Pre-Roche Lobe Overflow Evolution Of Massive Close Binary Stars: A Study Of Rotation, Wind Enhanced Mass-Loss, And The Bi-Stability Jump, Thomas C. Gehrman Jr. Jan 2019

The Pre-Roche Lobe Overflow Evolution Of Massive Close Binary Stars: A Study Of Rotation, Wind Enhanced Mass-Loss, And The Bi-Stability Jump, Thomas C. Gehrman Jr.

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Massive stars have the ability to enrich their environment with heavy elements and influence star formation in galaxies. Some massive stars exist in binary systems with short orbital periods. These are called massive close binaries. It is important to understand the evolution of massive close binary systems to gain insight about galaxy evolution. Massive stars above 20 solar masses experience a bi-stability jump where there is a sudden increase in mass-loss rate in their winds. There is ongoing research in this field, but the study of the bi-stability jump and its effects on massive close binary star properties has not …

Tatian's Diatessaron And The Proliferation Of Gospels, James W. Barker Jan 2019

Tatian's Diatessaron And The Proliferation Of Gospels, James W. Barker

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

Previous scholarship on the Diatessaron has asked whether Tatian intended to supplement or replace the fourfold gospel. This essay reconsiders the question by sketching a general theory of Gospel proliferation. Greek, Roman, and Jewish comparanda show that the proliferation and collection of similar works were common reading and writing practices. Accordingly, Gospel writers would not likely discard their sources, and Gospel readers would likely collect and compare multiple texts. On the supposition that ancient writers were attuned to their contemporary reading practices, Tatian likely would have expected the Diatessaron to be read alongside—not instead of—the fourfold gospel, as was the …

Gibson, Karine Peloffy, Daniel Horen Greenford, Meinhard Doelle, H Damon Matthews, Christian Holz, Kiri Staples, Bradley Wiseman, Frédérique Grenier

Reports & Public Policy Documents

Canada has signed the Paris Agreement and made other international commitments to doing our fair share of what is needed to keep overall global warming to the Paris Agreement limit of well below 2ºC, and to aim for 1.5ºC, to avoid devastating climate change. However, we have not yet progressed far in translating these commitments into implications for decision making on proposed undertakings with significant implications for meeting those commitments.

Clarifying those implications and determining how best to incorporate them in deliberations and decision making is overdue and now imperative. The federal government’s new Impact Assessment Act, which is now …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 9: The South Asian Connection, Charles H. Smith, Sahotra Sarkar, Nirmali Wijegoonawardana Jan 2019

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 9: The South Asian Connection, Charles H. Smith, Sahotra Sarkar, Nirmali Wijegoonawardana

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) is best known for his natural history explorations and theoretical biology, but he was also a potent social critic on subjects ranging from land tenure and colonial policy to antivaccinationism and poverty. Here, one of his emphases in the latter domain is spotlighted: his interest in South Asian affairs. This extended to a variety of subjects in the areas of politics, economics, health, literature, sociology, etc., and to a degree that may have had some influence on the development of thought of some major South Asian figures, including Mahatma Gandhi and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy.

Keeping It Off The Record: Student Social Media Monitoring And The Need For Updated Student Records Laws, Alice Haston Jan 2019

Keeping It Off The Record: Student Social Media Monitoring And The Need For Updated Student Records Laws, Alice Haston

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

An increasing number of school districts work with private companies to monitor public social media and to notify administrators of alarming student information. Although these services help address challenging school safety issues, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and state law offer little guidance on how districts should store student social media data. This Note encourages states to pass student records laws similar to recent California legislation and urges the Department of Education to clarify the relationship between student social media and education records under FERPA. New state and federal initiatives would help ensure that third parties may …

Work-Family And Family-Work Conflict As A Function Of Role Commitment And Core Self-Evaluation, Elisa A. Pope Jan 2019

Work-Family And Family-Work Conflict As A Function Of Role Commitment And Core Self-Evaluation, Elisa A. Pope

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Few previous studies have examined the interaction of role commitment (employee, partner, parental) and core self-evaluation (CSE) on work-family conflict (WFC) and family-work conflict (FWC). In this study I explored the effects of primary role commitment and level of CSE on WFC/FWC, after controlling for perception of control over stressors. Three hundred and seventy-one qualified participants completed an online survey that consisted of four scales—Work-Family and Family-Work Conflict Scale, Life Role Salience Scale, Core Self-Evaluation Scale, and Perceptions of Control over Work and Family Measures—a self-ranking of their primary role, and demographic questions that included specific work and non-work information. …

Employment Type, Residential Status, And Consumer Financial Capability: Evidence From China Household Finance Survey, Xu Cui, Jing Jian Xiao, Jingtao Yi

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

Research on consumer financial capability is important for consumer financial wellbeing and emerging in the literature. However, studies on consumer financial capability in the Chinese context remain limited. To fill up the research gap, we used data from the 2011 China Household Finance Survey to investigate whether employment type and residential status were associated with consumer financial capability in China. Consumer financial capability was measured by the range of financial assets. Results from OLS and Poisson regressions showed that people employed in the government-managed system, with urban residence registration and with non-local rural residence registration had a better financial capability …
