Nof Kdumim: Remaking The Ancient Landscape In East Jerusalem’S National Parks, Irus Braverman
Nof Kdumim: Remaking The Ancient Landscape In East Jerusalem’S National Parks, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
This article explores two national parks in East Jerusalem and their legal administration as the focus of contradictory and complementary attempts at preservation, colonization, and normalization. Drawing on in-depth interviews with, and observations of, officials from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and others, I expose the Judaizing of the landscape in Jerusalem. Nature never stands for itself; it is always an echo of a human presence and, in this case, of a Jewish past and its modern reunion. The project of imagining the natural landscape as one that embodies an ancient past—what Israeli officials have referred to in our …

Image-Based Localization Of User-Interfaces, Riti Gupta
Master's Projects
Image localization corresponds to translating the text present in the images from one language to other language. The aim of the project is to develop a methodology to translate the text in image captions from English to Hindi by taking context of the images into account. A lot of work has been done in this field [22], but our aim was to explore if the accuracy can be further improved by consideration of the additional information imparted by the images apart from the text. We have explored Deep Learning using neural networks for this project. In particular, Recurrent Neural Networks …

Surgery Simulation Of Internal Fixation For Compression Fractures, Xie Cui, Junmei Geng, Li Jian, Junyu Dong
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Virtual surgery simulation provides new means for medical surgery training with realism and immersion. A virtual surgery simulation of internal fixation for compression fractures is designed and implemented. By constructing 3D surgical scene, making deformation animation, adopting multi-level colliders combination and switching method for collision detection, and designing a multi-factors force feedback model to compute the tactile force and mapping the values to the different levels of vibration intensity of the HTC handle, combining with voice guidance and UI visual feedback, a visual, audible and tactile multi-channel surgical experience can be obtained. The system provides a guiding training module …

INTRODUCTION: Spine stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) achieves favorable outcomes compared to conventional radiotherapy doses/fractionation. The spinal cord is the principal dose-limiting organ-at-risk (OAR), and safe treatment requires precise immobilization/localization. Therefore, image guidance is paramount to successful spine SBRT. Conventional X-ray imaging and alignment to surrogate bony anatomy may be inadequate, whereas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) directly visualizes the dose-limiting cord. This work assessed the dosimetric capability of the ViewRay (ViewRay Inc. Oakwood Village, OH) magnetic resonance (MR) guided linac (MR-Linac) for spine SBRT.
METHODS: Eight spine SBRT patients without orthopedic hardware who were previously treated on a TrueBeam using …

Type I interferons (IFNs) are key mediators of the innate immune response. Although members of this family of cytokines signal through a single shared receptor, biochemical and functional variation exists in response to different IFN subtypes. While previous work has demonstrated that type I IFNs are essential to control infection by chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a globally emerging alphavirus, the contributions of individual IFN subtypes remain undefined. To address this question, we evaluated CHIKV pathogenesis in mice lacking IFN-β (IFN-β knockout [IFN-β-KO] mice or mice treated with an IFN-β-blocking antibody) or IFN-α (IFN regulatory factor 7 knockout [IRF7-KO] mice or mice …

Working Paper No. 39, Neoliberalism As A Variant Of Capitalism, Justin Pilarski
Working Papers in Economics
Economic systems evolve over time in adapting to the needs and deficiency of the system. This inquiry seeks to establish Neoliberalism as—in the language of Barry Clark—a variant of capitalism that evolved out of retaliation of the regulated variant of capitalism. We utilize Barry Clark’s work on the evolution of economic systems in establishing the pattern of adaptation in American capitalism. Then we establish and analyze the neoliberal variant of capitalism in how this evolution retaliated against the existing system rather than adapting the preceding variant. We then consider how the economics profession reacted when the neoliberal economic policies failed …

Neuroscience as a discipline is rarely covered in educational institutions in Puerto Rico. In an effort to overcome this deficit we developed the Bridge to Neuroscience Workshop (BNW), a full-day hands-on workshop in neuroscience education. BNW was conceived as an auxiliary component of a parent recruitment program called Bridge to the PhD in Neuroscience Program (BPNP). The objectives of BNW are to identify promising students for BPNP, and to increase awareness of neuroscience as a discipline and a career option. BNW introduces basic concepts in neuroscience using a variety of educational techniques, including mini-lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, experimentation, and …

Optical interrogation of voltage in deep brain locations with cellular resolution would be immensely useful for understanding how neuronal circuits process information. Here, we report ASAP3, a genetically encoded voltage indicator with 51% fluorescence modulation by physiological voltages, submillisecond activation kinetics, and full responsivity under two-photon excitation. We also introduce an ultrafast local volume excitation (ULoVE) method for kilohertz-rate two-photon sampling in vivo with increased stability and sensitivity. Combining a soma-targeted ASAP3 variant and ULoVE, we show single-trial tracking of spikes and subthreshold events for minutes in deep locations, with subcellular resolution and with repeated sampling over days. In the …

Fish Assemblages Of The Withlacoochee River Basin In South Georgia, Usa, Matthew J. Cannister, David L. Bechler
Georgia Journal of Science
An ichthyofauna review of literature prior to 2008 on the Withlacoochee River basin in south-central Georgia, USA, indicated that the fish fauna was underrepresented compared to other rivers, such as the Suwannee River basin in Florida of which the Withlacoochee River is a tributary. A survey would provide the state of Georgia potentially valuable additional information on the fish fauna within the basin. A 45-site survey within the eastern portion of the Withlacoochee River basin was conducted from 2008 to 2010 employing seines, gill nets, fish traps, trotlines, and creel surveys. Surveys yielded 51 fish species of which three, the …

Automatic And Interruptible User Interface Animation, Tian Liu, Andrey Kulikov
Defensive Publications Series
User interface layouts can change due to a number of factors, e.g., resizing of windows by users, change in active application, overlay of a window by another, addition or removal of UI elements, etc. Layout changes are typically animated, e.g., there are no jump-cuts from one layout to another. During an ongoing layout animation, there can be additional layout changes that require that the animation adapt to the new target layout. Present UI frameworks or toolkits are not interruptible, e.g., they do not gracefully incorporate the new layout target; instead, they head towards the new layout target with no change …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Veterans Returning From Combat: Impact On Social Reintegration, Rod Van Pelt
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Veterans Returning From Combat: Impact On Social Reintegration, Rod Van Pelt
Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition frequently observed in soldiers and veterans. The reintegration of veterans returning from combat is a challenge that state and federal administrations, as well as civilian structures and workplaces, face routinely. Despite PTSD being a public health issue with a socioeconomic impact, non-scholarly debate is the primary source of information on the non-medical burden of PTSD. The majority of scholarly evidence focuses on PTSD primarily as a medical condition, including when addressing the problem from a socioeconomic standpoint. In fact, most of the recent scholarly evidence points to specific areas of PTSD, such …

The nucleotide pool is significantly more susceptible to oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) compared to genomic DNA, due to DNA being more protected by the double helix and nucleosome packing. The NUDIX pyrophosphatase, MutT Homolog 1 (MTH1), maintains nucleotide pool integrity by hydrolyzing oxidized purines thus preventing their genomic incorporation. If incorporated into DNA the accumulation of these oxidized purines can lead to DNA strand breaks, genomic instability, and ultimately cell death. Our prior work has shown that MTH1 is critical in facilitating multiple pro-tumorigenic phenotypes in oncogenic RAS-mutated cancer cells, with its depletion leading to decreased …

Lysine is the second most limiting amino acid after methionine and is considered the most limiting amino acid for growth in poultry. Lysine requirement for broiler chickens has changed over the years. Leptin and adiponectin represent 2 adipokines that mediate metabolism by eliciting satiety effects whereas ghrelin peptide hormone influences appetite. We hypothesize that this affects growth performance of chicks. This study evaluates the effect of varying dietary lysine homeostasis on performance of broiler chickens through satiety- and appetite-mediating hormones. In 3 replications, 270 one-day-old chicks were reared for 8 wk feeding on diets comprising 0.85, 1.14, and 1.42% lysine …

The caging density required for optimal egg production by various avian species and varieties is highly variable. Even so, little is known of the required cage density for optimum performance of the laying guinea fowl (Numida meleagris). The objective of this study was to assess the effect of varying cage densities on production performance of pearl gray guinea fowl laying hens. In 3 replicates, 270 pearl gray guinea hens [28 wk of age (WOA)] were weighed individually and randomly assigned to laying cages at densities of 1, 2, and 3 birds/cage, equivalent to 1,394, 697, and 465 cm2/bird, respectively. During …

Lysine is the second limiting essential amino acid in poultry nutrition after methionine. Understanding the lysine requirement of poultry is necessary in guiding formulation of least cost diets that effectively meet the nutritional needs of individual birds. The lysine requirement of the Pearl Grey guinea fowl (PGGF) is not known. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the appropriate lysine levels required for optimal growth attributes of the PGGF. In a 12-week study, 512 one-day-old Pearl Grey guinea keets were weighed individually and randomly assigned to electrically heated battery brooders. Each battery contained 12 compartments housing 15 birds …

This study was conducted to describe the growth pattern of the French guinea fowl, a meat-type variety. Using BW data from hatch to 9 wk, 2 nonlinear mathematical functions (Gompertz and logistic) were used to estimate growth patterns of the French guinea fowl. The French guinea fowl did not exhibit sexual dimorphism for growth characteristics. From the Gompertz model, the asymptotic BW, growth rate, and age at maximum growth were 2.05 kg, 0.25 kg/wk, and 5.74 wk in males, respectively, and 2.03 kg, 0.25 kg/wk, and 5.72 wk in females, respectively. The ages at maximum growth were 5.75 and 5.74 …

This study was undertaken to describe the growth pattern of the pearl gray Guinea fowl. Using BW data from hatch to 22 wk, 3 nonlinear mathematical functions (Richards, Gompertz, and logistic) were used to estimate growth patterns of the pearl gray guinea fowl. The logistic and Gompertz models are a special case of the Richards model, which has a variable point of inflection defined by the shape or growth trajectory parameter, m. The shape parameter m was 1.08 and 0.98 in males and females, respectively, suggesting that the growth pattern of the pearl gray female guinea fowl is Gompertz. The …

Symbolism In The Allegory: A Look At Apollo’S Lyre, Keri Meinert, Emily Keiner, Anne Bak
2019 Festscrift: Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo
This paper analyzes the symbolic meaning within Monteverdi’s operatic version of the fable of Orpheus, a demigod who has a talent for music. When Orpheus’ bride Eurydice died suddenly from a snake bite, he decides to seek her soul in the Underworld and bring her back to the land of the living. This task does not prove to be as easy for Orpheus as he initially thinks, when he finds himself losing her twice during the course of the five acts. To show how his journey unfolds, and the meaning behind each step, we will develop the symbolic meaning in …

21CLEO Research Project Blog Posts
During the past year, we've come to realize that the term learning ecosystem is widely used, but not usually defined or widely understood. Rather than taking the term for granted, we crafted this blog post to
• explore the origins of the term,
• discuss what it has come to mean, and its limitations
• explain how and why we are using the term in our study despite its limitations.
