Screening The Cultivable Cave Microbial Mats For The Production Of Antimicrobial Compounds And Antibiotic Resistance, Jerneja Ambrožič Avguštin, Patricia Petrič, Lejla Pašić
International Journal of Speleology
The current work extends the phenotypic characterization of a bacterial culture collection obtained from white, yellow, grey or pink microbial cave wall colonies that are common in the caves of Slovenian Karst. We have determined antibiotic resistance to 22 natural and synthetic antibiotics in 69 isolates from the microbial mats. Thirty-eight isolates (52%) were resistant to 1-5 antibiotics; another 27 isolates (37%) were resistant to 6-10 antibiotics; and 7 isolates (0.1%) were resistant to 11-17 antibiotics. We screened for production of antimicrobial compounds by growing cave isolates on five different media and overlaying individual cultures with ten Gram-positive and Gram …

Infection Of Mitochondria In Damselfish Neurofibromatosis: Impacts On Mitochondrial Function And Dna Levels, Merly Laura Ovares
Infection Of Mitochondria In Damselfish Neurofibromatosis: Impacts On Mitochondrial Function And Dna Levels, Merly Laura Ovares
Open Access Dissertations
Damselfish neurofibromatosis (DNF) is a type of cancer affecting Stegastes partitus (Bicolor damselfish) on Florida reefs. The agent which causes the disease, termed the damselfish virus-like agent (DVLA), is the only known agent to replicate within mitochondria of animal cells. Determining the effects DVLA has on mitochondrial function and DNA levels are of importance to further understand DNF, as well as which mechanisms of mitochondrial function are directly affected by DVLA which may cause cancer. Experiments analyzed DNA levels of both DVLA and mitochondria (mtDNA), as well as mitochondrial-mediated metabolism on healthy and tumor tissues. Cell lines were also analyzed …

Lower back pain is a major socioeconomic concern in developed nations. Moreover, it is a condition which a majority of people will experience an episode within their lifetime, with a portion becoming chronically afflicted. Degeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD) is believed to play a critical role in initiating lower back pain. Poor nutrient supplies are implicated as a one of the root causes of this degeneration and much effort has been spent to better elucidate the behavior of IVD cells. The IVD is the largest avascular structure within the body, relying on diffusion to migrate nutrients in and clear …
Exploring Myosin Rlc Phosphorylation As A Potential Novel Therapeutic Target For Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Sunil Yadav
Exploring Myosin Rlc Phosphorylation As A Potential Novel Therapeutic Target For Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Sunil Yadav
Open Access Dissertations
Background: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most prevalent heart diseases characterized by ventricular and septal hypertrophy, myocardial fibrosis and myofibrillar disarray. Genetic forms of HCM are mainly caused by mutations in major sarcomeric proteins such as β-myosin heavy chain (β-MHC), myosin protein binding C (MyBP-C), regulatory and essential light chains (RLC/ELC), troponin, tropomyosin and actin. My Ph.D. proposal focuses on myosin RLC and two RLC mutations: Arginine-to-Glutamine, R58Q, and Aspartic acid-to-Valine, D166V, that cause HCM and strives to provide insight into the importance of human cardiac myosin RLC phosphorylation site at Ser-15 for normal heart function and its …
Functional Significance Of The Hexosamine Biosynthesis Pathway In Pancreatic Cancer, Nikita Satish Sharma
Functional Significance Of The Hexosamine Biosynthesis Pathway In Pancreatic Cancer, Nikita Satish Sharma
Open Access Dissertations
Pancreatic cancer is a notoriously lethal disease. Late detection, lack of effective biomarkers, presence of a treatment refractory population of cells, an impermeable stroma, metastasis and tumor recurrence are some of the factors contributing to the dismissal 5-year survival rate of 8% for this disease. Hexosamine Biosynthesis Pathway (HBP) is a unique node in cancer metabolism. Its end product, UDP-GlcNAc is used by both tumor cells and the extracellular matrix component Hyaluronan for signaling, proliferation and metastasis of pancreatic cancer cells. While there have been reports examining the significance of HBP in individual factors contributing to tumor aggressiveness, a comprehensive …
Food Preferences Among Children At Arcadia Elementary School, Laurel Lee
Food Preferences Among Children At Arcadia Elementary School, Laurel Lee
Community Based Research
My research, conducted from September through November of 2017, showed that the children preferred more processed foods and starches instead of healthier options such as fruits and vegetables, even when healthy options were available. According to the parents/caregivers surveyed, their children prefer to eat processed American meals. Parents/caregivers desired for their children to eat a variety of different foods including fruit, vegetables, proteins, and traditional Hispanic food. This study acknowledges that healthy meal options are available at schools, but there needs to be more research on how to best encourage students to take advantage of these nutritious choices in order …

The rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned Australian wildlife is managed by over 20,000 carers, mostly voluntarily. These volunteers experience mental, physical and financial challenges that have not been researched adequately. This study collated the responses (n = 316) to a survey conducted among Australian wildlife carers who actively foster orphaned joeys for hand-raising and injured adult mammals for rehabilitation and release. It confirmed 86% of rehabilitators are female, 70% are over the age of 46 years and their prime motivation is an affinity with animals. The average time spent in the sector is 11.5 years, and the …
Bridging The Gaps In Elementary Life Science Lessons, Kaitlin Cook
Bridging The Gaps In Elementary Life Science Lessons, Kaitlin Cook
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The United States is experiencing a rise in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers while facing a shortage of STEM workers. This could partly be due to a decline in the amount of time allowed for science in elementary schools or possibly because many life science lessons in elementary school lack originality and may not stimulate an interest in science. Lack of captivating STEM education prior to college may be contributing to the decline of students graduating with STEM based degrees. My thesis focuses on getting out of the routine of using monotonous life science lesson plans. I identify …
"Between Two Fires": Gender And American Socialism In The Progressive Era, Elisia Harder
"Between Two Fires": Gender And American Socialism In The Progressive Era, Elisia Harder
Senior Theses
The Progressive Era (1890-1920) in the United States was a time of immense change in both the political and private spheres. Movements which sought to fundamentally upend the political status quo gained in popularity, including that of socialism. Socialism promised equality for workers regardless of gender, something that appealed to many American women at the time. A myriad of upper/middle-class and working-class women were thus initially drawn to the socialist movement. These women, however, would not find the salvation they were promised. Instead, they would confront the very same misogyny they experienced in mainstream political parties, as their struggle was …

Gender Roles In The United States, Robert Bush
Gender Roles In The United States, Robert Bush
Student Works
Can men and women be separate but equal? In our modern society, equality of the sexes is generally accepted as a fact. However, according to Separate Spheres Ideology, women and men have different spaces in society where they fit best. This ideology traditionally says that women belong in the home and in situations involving child care, while men are better suited for the workplace (Miller & Borgida, 2016). Can men and women be expected to fulfill separate roles in society and still be treated as equals? What positive or negative effects do gender roles have on individuals and organizations? Are …

Reattachment Of The Multifidus Tendon In Lumbar Surgery To Decrease Postoperative Back Pain: A Technical Note., Neil Klinger, Emre Yilmaz, Dia R Halalmeh, R Shane Tubbs, Marc D Moisi
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
The posterior midline approach to the lumbar spine requires significant manipulation of the paraspinal muscles. Muscle detachment and retraction results in iatrogenic damage such as crush injury, devascularization, and denervation, all of which have been associated with postoperative pain. The muscle most directly affected by the posterior approach is the lumbar multifidus (LM), the largest and most medial of the deep lumbar paraspinal muscles. The effects of the posterior approach on the integrity of the LM is concerning, as multiple studies have demonstrated that intraoperative injuries sustained by the LM lead to postoperative muscle atrophy and potentially worsening low back …

Note To Self, Chloe Renee Hayes
Note To Self, Chloe Renee Hayes
Theses
“note to self” is a 2D animated film completed as the thesis project for my MFA degree. This film uses experimental imagery and often abstract visual metaphor to tell a narrative story that discusses suicide, self-harm, depression, trauma, mental health, and the complicated issues surrounding these subjects.
“note to self” tells the story of a teenage girl fighting through her struggles and uncertainties in the metaphysical space of her own mind. Sienna, the protagonist, has resolved to kill herself and is working through her conflicted feelings to rationally explain why. Posed as a conversation with a part of her own …

TREC Webinar Series
The "Fast Track" project at the University of Oregon focuses on a mode of transportation that is sometimes left out of vehicle-to-infrastructure, or V2I, conversations: Bicycling. NITC researchers developed an app based on a new technology being integrated into modern cars: GLOSA, or Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory. GLOSA allows motorists to set their speed along corridors to maximize their chances of catching a "green wave" so they won't have to stop at red lights.
This project demonstrates how GLOSA can be used by bicyclists in the same way it is used by motorists, with a test site on a …

The Mechanical Development For An Autonomous Forest Service Robot, James P. Walker
The Mechanical Development For An Autonomous Forest Service Robot, James P. Walker
Honors College Theses
Georgia’s forests are under threat from numerous invasive species of plant, both herbaceous and woody. A primary factor in the invasive potential of any given non-native plant is the lack of natural predators and rapid reseed and regrowth cycles. To combat invasive plants, this thesis proposes an artificial, robotic predator to provide a means of controlling invasive species. Although autonomous robots are currently being developed for similar agricultural purposes, none have emerged for forestry related tasks, such as proposed in this work. The chassis, inspired by rocker bogie and similar suspension systems, has been redesigned to have eight wheels, to …

From Field To Film: Mosquito Surveillance And Survey Of Us Adults' Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Arthropod-Borne Disease Vectors, Justine Laviolette
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mosquito-borne disease is a public health challenge that warrants an active surveillance program for the identification of mosquito populations and the education of the public for prevention and protection against disease-transmitting arthropods. The communication of science to the public is necessary to prevent disease, change behavior, and promote a dialog between scientists and the public.
People are accustomed to high quality entertainment, which begs the question, “If we made science more entertaining, would the public be more interested?”
To address these issues, the objectives of this study are: 1) identify mosquito species and abundance at the US Meat Animal Research …

Peninsula Medical School
Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) and Pituitary Adenylyl Cyclase Activating Peptide (PACAP) are regeneration-associated neuropeptides, which are up-regulated by neurons following peripheral nerve injury. So far, they have only been studied for their roles as autocrine signals for both neuronal survival and axon outgrowth during peripheral nerve regeneration. In this report, we examined VIP and PACAP’s paracrine effects on Schwann cells and macrophages in the distal nerve stump during peripheral nerve regeneration. We show that VPAC1, VPAC2, and PAC1 are all up-regulated in the mouse distal nerve following peripheral nerve injury and are highly expressed in Schwann cells and macrophages within …

“Tell Me, Bambi Or Yogi Ever Hunt You Back?” The Windigo Myth: A Metaphor For Imperialism And Mental Illness, Christine Carlough
Senior Capstone Theses
The Canadian indigenous myth of the windigo, originating from Algonquian-speaking tribes of the subarctic Northeast like Ojibwe and Cree, is a manifestation for a multitude of fears. This myth originated hundreds of years ago in order to explain the horror and lack of understanding of a mental illness, which would later be known as Windigo Psychosis. Windigo Psychosis is a culture-bound syndrome for an insatiable desire to consume human flesh. A culture-bound syndrome is recognizable and unique only within a specific society or culture, so in other words, Windigo Psychosis is specific to this area in Canada due to a …
