Edible Quality Changes And The Correlation Of Yak Rumen Smooth Muscle During Different Age Stages, Li Shengsheng, Li Ruizhe, Zhang Qianglong
Food and Machinery
In order to investigate the edible quality change and correlation of yak rumen smooth muscle under different age. Water content, water holding capacity, cooking loss, shear force, and texture of yak rumen smooth muscle from 1~6 years-old yaks were measured. The results showed that with the increase of age, water content, water holding capacity, cohesiveness, springiness, and gumminess of yak rumen smooth muscle significantly decreased (P<0.05); cooking loss, shear force, hardness, and chewiness of yak rumen smooth muscle also significantly increased (P<0.05). Correlation analysis indicated that there were significantly correlation of yak age with water content, water holding capacity, cooking …

Simultaneous Determination Of Traditional And New Types Of “Lean Meat Powder” In Pork By Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Liu Di, Han Li, Huang Kun, Wang Bin, Wang Heng, Yu Tingting, Wang Huixia
Food and Machinery
An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of new and traditional "lean meat powder"(Clenbuterol, Salbutamol, Ractopamine, Terbutaline, Isoprophane, Chlorpheniramine, Simmatrol, Fenoterol and Olaquindox and its metabolites) in pork by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was established. Pork samples were extracted with 2% formic acid-acetonitrile solution. The extracts were purified by neutral alumina column. After being dried and concentrated by nitrogen, the hexane was degreased and determined by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and quantified by internal standard method. Waters HSS C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, particle size 1.8 μm) was used. The mobile phase was separated by …

Rural Space (Re)Produced: Alternative Representations, Practices And Imagination Of Post-Soviet Rural Women In Estonia, Kerli Kirch Schneider
Rural Space (Re)Produced: Alternative Representations, Practices And Imagination Of Post-Soviet Rural Women In Estonia, Kerli Kirch Schneider
Open Access Dissertations
The dominant discourses of Eastern European rural regions portray them as passive, homogeneous places and “the greatest ‘losers’ of the post-socialist transition” (Saar, 2008, 140). This dissertation explores the (re)production of post-Soviet rural space from the perspective of Estonian rural women. It utilizes a multi-perspectival approach that tackles the production of space from three interrelated angles: representational, material, and symbolic (Lefebvre, 1991; Halfacree, 2007). It asks what kind of (counter)hegemonic versions of post-socialist rurality and rural femininities emerge in connection with the representations, spatial practices and lived experiences of Estonian rural women, and which coherences and contradictions surface from the …

The murine genus Rhynchomys includes the large-bodied Philippine "shrew-rats," highly specialized members of the vermivorous clade of Philippine murids. Four species are recognized, all of which are endemic to Luzon Island: R. soricoides from mountains within the Central Cordillera, R. isarogensis from Mt. Isarog on the Bicol Peninsula, R. banahao from Mt. Banahaw in south-central Luzon, and R. tapulao from Mt. Tapulao in the Zambales Mountains. Field surveys in 2006 and 2008 revealed two additional populations of Rhynchomys, one from Mt. Labo (1,544 m), a dormant stratovolcano at the base of the Bicol Peninsula, the other from Mt. Mingan (1,901 …

Using Object-Oriented Classification For Coastal Management In The East Central Coast Of Florida: A Quantitative Comparison Between Uav, Satellite, And Aerial Data, Bo Yang, Timothy L. Hawthorne, Hannah Torres, Michael Feinman
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
High resolution mapping of coastal habitats is invaluable for resource inventory, change detection, and inventory of aquaculture applications. However, coastal areas, especially the interior of mangroves, are often difficult to access. An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), equipped with a multispectral sensor, affords an opportunity to improve upon satellite imagery for coastal management because of the very high spatial resolution, multispectral capability, and opportunity to collect real-time observations. Despite the recent and rapid development of UAV mapping applications, few articles have quantitatively compared how much improvement there is of UAV multispectral mapping methods compared to more conventional remote sensing data such …

Background
Early life experiences have persisting influence on brain function throughout life. Maternal signals constitute a primary source of early life experiences, and their quantity and quality during sensitive developmental periods exert enduring effects on cognitive function and emotional and social behaviors. Here we examined if, in addition to established qualitative dimensions of maternal behavior during her interactions with her infant and child, patterns of maternal signals may contribute to the maturation of children's executive functions. We focused primarily on effortful control, a potent predictor of mental health outcomes later in life.

Low-Carbohydrate Diets For Gestational Diabetes, Sarah S Farabi, Teri L Hernandez
Open Access Publications
Nutrition therapy provides the foundation for treatment of gestational diabetes (GDM), and has historically been based on restricting carbohydrate (CHO) intake. In this paper, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are reviewed to assess the effects of both low- and higher CHO nutrition approaches in GDM. The prevailing pattern across the evidence underscores that although CHO restriction improves glycemia at least in the short-term, similar outcomes could be achievable using less restrictive approaches that may not exacerbate IR. The quality of existing studies is limited, in part due to dietary non-adherence and confounding effects of treatment with insulin or oral medication. Recent …

On The Downside Of Heroism: Grey Zone Limitations On The Value Of Social And Physical Risk Heroism, James K. Beggan
Heroism Science
Implicit lay views of heroes are overwhelmingly positive and do not focus on the potential problems that may result from heroic behavior. Similarly, a rarely challenged assumption of heroism research is that heroic behavior represents a social good that should be rewarded, encouraged, and even taught. Yet it is not difficult to demonstrate empirically that heroic behavior, regardless of how well intended, can backfire and hurt, rather than help, the would-be helper, the target of helping, and third parties in the background. By extension, training programs that promote heroism can be of questionable value to the extent that they encourage …

Children from low-income homes are at risk for an academic achievement gap that spans the domains of language, math, and science. Latino Dual Language Learning (DLL) children are disproportionately more likely to come from low-income homes than their peers, making them more likely to face additional risks to their academic achievement. Science has recently been recognized on a national level as an area of importance for early childhood education. Science is a key content area for DLL children because it provides opportunities to learn vocabulary through hands-on activities, develop social-emotional skills, engage in critical-thinking, and problem-solving. High quality early science …

Care Ethics: Morality With No Responsibility, Haley Mathis

Most of us assume we have free will and that we make free decisions all of the time. Yet, philosophers and scientists have provided significant worries about making this assumption. What I want to know, in this project, is how these debates (and the uncertainty and contentious nature of these debates) bear on normative moral theories about what makes an action right or wrong. I will argue that we should still be able to understand morality, regardless of whether it turns out we have free will or not. The challenges facing the free will debate just shouldn’t be a challenge …

Billfish Behavior And Habitat Use In The Presence Of Environmental Forcing And Commercial Exploitation, Bruce Gibbs Pohlot
Open Access Dissertations
The Pacific Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans) are vital resources to Central American economies along the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean through recreational catch-and-release fisheries and as retainable bycatch in commercial fisheries. Because of observed stock declines and a lack of a formal stock assessment research, there exists an immediate need to understand sailfish and blue marlin population dynamic characteristics to design fishery regulations to protect both species and fisheries. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to understand the sailfish and blue marlin behavior and dynamic habitat use in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) in support of …

Reproductive Ecology And Movement Of Pallid Sturgeon In The Upper Missouri River, Montana, Luke M. Holmquist, Christopher S. Guy, Anne Tews, David J. Trimpe, Molly A.H. Webb
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Successful recruitment of endangered pallid sturgeon has not been documented in the upper Missouri River basin for decades, and research on the reproductive ecology of pallid sturgeon has been hindered by low sample size. A conservation propagation program was initiated in the 1990s, and the oldest age class of hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon are becoming sexually mature increasing the number of reproductively‐ active fish in the system. However, it is currently unknown how the reproductive ecology of hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon relates to the few remaining wild fish. Following spring reproductive assessments, weekly relocations were recorded for each individual from late‐May to …
Torture And The Corrida, Andrew Brei
Torture And The Corrida, Andrew Brei
Between the Species
In recent years the debate over the moral status of bullfighting has been focused on whether or not it should be characterized as a form of torture. Francis Wolff has argued that it should not be, and Gabriel Andrade has claimed that it should be. But in my view neither author adequately defines bullfighting or torture. In this essay I have three goals. The first is to provide an adequate account of bullfighting, including its structure and meaning. The second is to define the necessary conditions for torture. And the third is to show that bullfighting meets those conditions. Thus, …
