The ability of NSAIDs to delay bone healing has been long known, although the extent and exact mechanism remains elusive. The present study evaluates the effect of short duration NSAID on bone healing in dogs following experimental tibial osteotomy. Carprofen was administered twice daily for either 0, 2, or 8 weeks following surgery. Bone healing was evaluated radiographically using RUST scoring at 4 and 8 weeks postop. Postmortem, quantitative CT of for bone mineral density analysis, histologic cartilage:callus ratio of the fracture, and biomechanical testing were performed. Biomechanically, stiffness and maximum stress were higher in dogs that received no carprofen …

Purification And Preliminary Characterization Of Zinc(Ii) Dependent Transcription Factor Adcr, Asm Saem Aug 2019

Purification And Preliminary Characterization Of Zinc(Ii) Dependent Transcription Factor Adcr, Asm Saem

Theses and Dissertations

Transition metals are essential micronutrients for organisms. Excess zinc can be lethal to bacterial survival. Zinc homeostasis is crucial and is regulated by zinc uptake and efflux system. Streptococcus pneumoniae AdcR (Adhesin competence regulator) transcription factor is the member of MarR (multiple antibiotic resistance regulator) family proteins that suppress the zinc upregulation transporter. In the absence of zinc, AdcR has less affinity to bind DNA and uptake genes are expressed in order to transport zinc inside the cell. Streptococcus pneumoniae is a gram-positive human pathogen that is capable of colonizing in the human nasopharynx, especially in young children and leads …

Optimal Portfolio Design To Manage Oyster Resources, Frederick Nyanzu Aug 2019

Optimal Portfolio Design To Manage Oyster Resources, Frederick Nyanzu

Theses and Dissertations

The State of Mississippi wants to manage its oyster resource to increase production, quality, ecological, and economic benefits. In this study, we employ modern portfolio theory (MPT) to test if there are potential gains to hold multiple oyster resources for multiple benefits to aid the state's effort in achieving its goal. Using a Delphi approach, we elicit complete sets of data on ecosystem services (on oxygen, nutrients, sedimentation, and salinity) across multiple oyster resources (traditional plantings, off-bottom farms, and restored reefs). A benefit transfer method is used later to assigned money-metric value to each service estimate. The multiple service values …

Discovery Of Antifungal Metabolites In Maize Cob Via Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Jeremy Ray Winders Aug 2019

Discovery Of Antifungal Metabolites In Maize Cob Via Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Jeremy Ray Winders

Theses and Dissertations

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a global food staple and is at risk from infection by the pathogenic fungus Aspergillus flavus L. The ubiquitous, soil-borne fungus causes ear rot of maize and produces the carcinogenic secondary metabolite known as aflatoxin. Aflatoxin B1 is the most potent carcinogenic mycotoxin known, causing hepatocellular carcinoma, along with many other serious health problems such as immunosuppression. Previous studies have shown that maize cob tissue plays an essential role in both facilitating and limiting the spread of the fungal pathogen A. flavus, however, little attention in the literature has been given to the cob. To …

Foraging Ecology And Depredation Impact Of Scaup On Commercial Baitfish And Sportfish Farms In Eastern Arkansas, Stephen Clements

Theses and Dissertations

Scaup (Aythya spp.) are suspected of consuming substantial quantities of fish from Arkansas commercial baitfish and sportfish farms. We investigated the foraging ecology and depredation impact of scaup on farms by surveying ponds and collecting scaup during two autumn-winters (2016-2018) in Arkansas. Scaup abundance and fish they consumed were highly variable between winters. More scaup were present and they ate more fish during the second winter (2017-2018) than the previous winter. In the second year, there were an estimated 874,941 scaup use-days and 18% of Lesser Scaup diet was fish. We found that scaup use of ponds was more likely …

Identification Of Protein Biomarkers For Differentiating Listeria Monocytogenes Genetic Lineage Iii, Basant Gomaa Aug 2019

Identification Of Protein Biomarkers For Differentiating Listeria Monocytogenes Genetic Lineage Iii, Basant Gomaa

Theses and Dissertations

Listeriamonocytogenes causes listeriosis and is one of the most virulent foodborne pathogens. Different subtyping techniques classified L. monocytogenes into four genetic lineages(I, II,III and IV)and seventeen serotypes. Most outbreaks of listeriosis are caused by lineage I. Lineage II is mostly associated with sporadic listeriosis, while Lineage III strains are typically lower risk for causing listeriosis. Listeriosis mainly affectselderly, immunosuppressed, children, andpregnant women causing fetal death, miscarriage, meningitis, encephalitis, and septicemia. Therefore, it is important to differentiate high-risk strains from low-risk strains, which will permit early and appropriate interventions. Our main goal in this current work is to detect candidate biomarkers unique …

Common Beasts: A Collection & Other Poems consists of a three part diachronic sequence of poems, tracing the history of a small stone. The stone is first discovered by a teenage girl in the aftermath of her mother's burning at the stake for witchcraft; she believes it to be her dead mother's eye, which carries protective power. In the second section of the collection, the stone has been procured by a white male poetry professor who uses the stone as a crutch to support his fragile sense of self; a young female student of his comes to live with him, …

Alternative Therapeutic Mechanisms Of Novel Phenoxyalkyl Pyridinium Oximes To Treat Organophosphorus Compounds, Royce Harrison Nichols Aug 2019

Alternative Therapeutic Mechanisms Of Novel Phenoxyalkyl Pyridinium Oximes To Treat Organophosphorus Compounds, Royce Harrison Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

Organophosphates (OPs), such as nerve agents and insecticides, potently inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Oximes, such as the currently FDA approved oxime 2-PAM, remove the OP from the inhibited enzyme. 2-PAM is effective against select OPs and cannot effectively pass the blood-brain barrier to attenuate OP induced CNS damage. Our laboratory has synthesized a series of substituted phenoxyalkyl pyridinium oximes (Patent number: 9,227,937) that have demonstrated increased survival rates compared to 2-PAM. This research investigated 1) in vitro oxime reactivation of rat, human, and guinea pig serum BChE after inhibition by nerve agent and insecticidal OPs; 2) in vitro determination of reactivation …

Estimating Recreational Value Of Water Quality In Mississippi Lakes When Water Quality Data Are Scarce, Caroline Kelsoe Aug 2019

Estimating Recreational Value Of Water Quality In Mississippi Lakes When Water Quality Data Are Scarce, Caroline Kelsoe

Theses and Dissertations

In its 2012 National Lakes Assessment, the EPA determined that nutrients are the most widespread stressor of US Lakes, with one-third of US lakes containing excess nitrogen and/or phosphorus. In response, states are developing numeric nutrient criteria to regulate the allowable amount of nutrients in surface waterbodies. In this study, we estimate the recreational value of improved water quality as a result of reduced nutrients in Mississippi lakes using a travel cost model. A major challenge, however, is the lack of water quality data for many Mississippi lakes. We introduce a water quality prediction model to impute water quality measures …

A Geoarchaeological Analysis Of The 2017 Excavations At The Hester Site (22mo569), James Lewis Strawn Aug 2019

A Geoarchaeological Analysis Of The 2017 Excavations At The Hester Site (22mo569), James Lewis Strawn

Theses and Dissertations

The small number and diffuse distribution of sites with intact Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene occupations in the Southeastern United States consequently makes examining Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene settlement patterning in the region difficult (Goodyear 1999). The Hester Site (22MO569), located in northeastern Mississippi, contains intact Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene deposits that can potentially afford archaeologists with a better understanding of late Pleistocene/early Holocene settlement in the region (Brookes 1979; Goodyear 1999:463-465). Investigations at Hester by Brookes (1979) revealed a stratified site containing artifacts that represented the late Paleoindian through Woodland periods in the Southeastern United States. Burris (2006) developed an alternative typology by …

Comparative Assessment Of Human Observation In Virtual And Physical Reality, Oumaima Larif Aug 2019

Comparative Assessment Of Human Observation In Virtual And Physical Reality, Oumaima Larif

Theses and Dissertations

Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of an environment that can be interacted with a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment. VR techniques have the potential to reduce design cycle times and reduce or eliminate physical prototyping costs if the human performance in VR is truly comparable to physical reality. In this research, human oversight of an assembly process in virtual reality (VR) and physical reality is compared for the ability to detect deviations (errors) in parts. This is relevant to verifying the use of VR to assess the vulnerability of cyber-physical systems …

Development Of Recombinant Staphylococcal Cytotoxins And Superantigens As Vaccine Candidates Against Bovine Mastitis Caused By Staphylococcus Aureus, Sunghyun Yoon Aug 2019

Development Of Recombinant Staphylococcal Cytotoxins And Superantigens As Vaccine Candidates Against Bovine Mastitis Caused By Staphylococcus Aureus, Sunghyun Yoon

Theses and Dissertations

Bovine mastitis is a significant disease affecting the dairy industry worldwide. The most frequently causative agent of contagious bovine mastitis is Staphylococcus aureus that produces numerous virulence factors contributing to its pathogenesis. However, it is not clearly defined which virulence factors play a critical role in bovine mastitis due to the heterogeneous virulence factor profiles in S. aureus isolated from different hosts and disease types. Among many virulence factors, it has long been postulated that staphylococcal cytotoxins and superantigens (SAgs) play an important role in the pathogenesis of S. aureus in bovine mastitis due to their potent toxicity toward host …

Effect Of Occidiofungin On Morphogenic Transformation Of Candida Albicans, Rabina Kumpakha Aug 2019

Effect Of Occidiofungin On Morphogenic Transformation Of Candida Albicans, Rabina Kumpakha

Theses and Dissertations

Candida albicans is a polymorphic fungus that can grow as yeast (Y) and hypha (H). The Y-H morphological switching is controlled through the MAPK, Cek1p. With the prior work showing that occidiofungin prevents C. albicans from forming hypha when added at the time of Y-H switching, we aim to identify the impact of occidiofungin on signaling events associated with morphological switching specifically looking at Cek1 MAPK cascade. Results from this work have demonstrated that Cek1 MAPK is not required for occidiofungin bioactivity. Further, we report that morphologically switching cells are more sensitive to occidiofungin than their non-switching counterparts. Moreover, later …

Effects Of Various Concentrations Of Soybean Hull Supplementation On Performance, Digestion And Serum Chemistry Of Weaned Beef Cattle Fed Ryegrass Baleage, Paige N. Tipton

Theses and Dissertations

Graded concentrations of soybean hull pellets (SHP) fed to calves consuming annual ryegrass baleage was evaluated in two experiments. Experiment one evaluated performance and serum glucose of animals fed three treatments. Treatments were: 0.0% (TRT 0), 0.5% (TRT 0.5), 1.0% (TRT 1) body weight (BW) of SHP fed daily while calves had ad libitum access to baleage. Average daily gain and BW increased for calves receiving TRT 1 (P < 0.05). Experiment two evaluated passage rate of treatments using ytterbium chloride as a marker. Passage rate of diet decreased for TRT 1 compared to TRT 0 (10.9 h vs. 16.72 h TRT 1 and TRT 0 respectively, P < 0.05). Calves receiving TRT 0.5 had greater ADG than calves fed TRT 0 (0.54 kg/d and 0.30 kg/d respectively; P < 0.05). Diet passage rate decreased as supplement amount increased (P < 0.05). Serum glucose concentrations were not affected.

Utilizing Inter-Seeding Techniques And Brachiaria Species As A Fall Cover Crop To Control Post-Harvest Amaranth, Justin Calhoun Aug 2019

Utilizing Inter-Seeding Techniques And Brachiaria Species As A Fall Cover Crop To Control Post-Harvest Amaranth, Justin Calhoun

Theses and Dissertations

Early planting soybean (Glycine max L.) strategies across the mid-southern United States has complicated weed management in the form of post-harvest weed control. Research has investigated the use of cover crops to aid in management of weed populations during winter months, but conventional cover crops provides minimal weed management benefit immediately following cash crop harvest. Inter-seeding cover crop into crop canopies has potential to promote earlier cover crop establishment, thus creating higher potential for post-harvest weed management. However, factors such as inter-seeding timing, herbicide residue, as well as harvest aid applications must be considered. Therefore, studies were conducted in Mississippi …

Displaced Consciousness And Historical Imprisonment In Pirandello’S Enrico Iv And Unamuno’S El Hermano Juan O El Mundo Es Teatro, Francesca Magario Wadlington Aug 2019

Displaced Consciousness And Historical Imprisonment In Pirandello’S Enrico Iv And Unamuno’S El Hermano Juan O El Mundo Es Teatro, Francesca Magario Wadlington

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work is to explore how Luigi Pirandello’s Enrico IV (1922) and Miguel de Unamuno’s El hermano Juan o el mundo es teatro (1929) utilize metatheatrical strategies to create plays that constantly question the juxtaposition, and yet the fluidity, of reality and fiction. Through a similar existential search, which is guided by a Sartrean psychoanalytic approach, the protagonists endure a transformation that reveals contrasting results: Enrico remains entrapped in his theatrical portrayal of Henry IV. Conversely, Don Juan frees himself from societal restraints that had portrayed him as a trickster through centuries of literary tradition. In these …

Analysis Of Defense Signaling Pathway Genes Associated With Fungal Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus And Aflatoxin Accumulation In Corn, Felicia Marie Parish

Theses and Dissertations

Aspergillus flavus exemplifies a pathogenic fungus that remains a significant contributor to the loss of corn (Zea mays) crops. The production of carcinogenic aflatoxins renders the crop hazardous for consumption and causes significant loss to farmers. Therefore, the prevention of A. flavus contamination continues to persist as a topic for research intervention. Host resistance to this pathogen provides a promising source of defense for the corn plant. Corn inbred line Mp313E was previously identified to exhibit significant resistance against the A. flavus fungal infection and aflatoxin contamination. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping has previously established four major QTL locations associated …

The Impacts Of Pregnancy Status, Abortion Risk, And Other Factors On Replacement Female Values In Mississippi Cattle Auctions, Tori Lee Marshall Aug 2019

The Impacts Of Pregnancy Status, Abortion Risk, And Other Factors On Replacement Female Values In Mississippi Cattle Auctions, Tori Lee Marshall

Theses and Dissertations

A replacement female's value is primarily determined by her reproductive potential and the expected value of calves produced. To improve sales revenues, sellers benefit from understanding the buyers' valuation of physical characteristics related to reproductive potential and calf values. The goal of this research is to identify the impact of physical characteristics on the valuation of individual replacement females through a hedonic pricing model. Results suggest all facets of pregnancy (i.e. pregnancy status, months pregnant, expected due-date, and cow-calf pairs) are crucial to the valuation. Particularly, pregnant replacement females are discounted relative to non-pregnant, ascending in value as months pregnant …

Human Behavioral Response To The Younger Dryas In North Alabama: An Analysis Of The Richard L. Kilborn Collection, Robert A. Barlow Aug 2019

Human Behavioral Response To The Younger Dryas In North Alabama: An Analysis Of The Richard L. Kilborn Collection, Robert A. Barlow

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a collections-based project that employs approximately 1,300 projectile points to investigate behavioral response to the Younger Dryas in north Alabama (12,900 to 11,700 BP). I apply a version of the marginal value theorem to determine how changing resource structures caused changes in projectile point technology. I argue that changes in technology during the Younger Dryas were not conditioned by access or availability of lithic raw material. Instead, variation in technology is likely a response to changes in return rates from hunting and foraging. Further, the changes in hunting return rates correlate with changes in north Alabama forest …
