Side-Attack Explosive Hazard Detection In Voxel-Space Radar Using Signal Processing And Convolutional Neural Networks, Blake Brockner Aug 2019

Side-Attack Explosive Hazard Detection In Voxel-Space Radar Using Signal Processing And Convolutional Neural Networks, Blake Brockner

Theses and Dissertations

The development of a computer vision algorithm for use with 3D voxel space radar imagery is observed in this thesis. The goal is to detect explosive hazards present in 3D synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image data. The algorithm consists of three primary stages; a precreener to find areas of interest, clustering for labeling distinct areas, and a classifier. The performance between multiple prescreener methods are compared when using a heuristic classifier. Finally, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is used as a classifier stage and a comparison between a deep network, a shallow network, and human experts is conducted.

Synthesis Paper: Targeted Livestock Grazing: Prescription For Healthy Rangelands, Derek W. Bailey, Jeffrey C. Mosley, Richard E. Estell, Andres F. Cibils, Marc Horney, John R. Hendrickson, John W. Walker, Karen L. Launchbaugh, Elizabeth A. Burritt

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Targeted livestock grazing is a proven tool for manipulating rangeland vegetation, and current knowledge about targeted livestock grazing is extensive and expanding rapidly. Targeted grazing prescriptions optimize the timing, frequency, intensity, and selectivity of grazing (or browsing) in combinations that purposely exert grazing/browsing pressure on specific plant species or portions of the landscape. Targeted grazing differs from traditional grazing management in that the goal of targeted grazing is to apply defoliation or trampling to achieve specific vegetation management objectives, whereas the goal of traditional livestock grazing management is generally the production of livestock commodities. A shared aim of targeted livestock …

Social Interactions Do Not Drive Territory Aggregation In A Grassland Songbird, S.K. Winnicki, S.M. Munguia, E.J. Williams, W.A. Boyle Aug 2019

Social Interactions Do Not Drive Territory Aggregation In A Grassland Songbird, S.K. Winnicki, S.M. Munguia, E.J. Williams, W.A. Boyle

United States National Park Service: Publications

Understanding the drivers of animal distributions is a fundamental goal of ecology and informs habitat management. The costs and benefits of colonial aggregations in animals are well established, but the factors leading to aggregation in territorial animals remain unclear. Territorial animals might aggregate to facilitate social behavior such as (1) group defense from predators and/or parasites, (2) cooperative care of offspring, (3) extra-pair mating, and/or (4) mitigating costs of extra-pair mating through kin selection. Using experimental and observational methods, we tested predictions of all four hypotheses in a tallgrass prairie in northeast Kansas, United States. Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) males …

Nuclear Organization And The Epigenetic Landscape Of The Mus Musculus X-Chromosome, Alicia Liu Aug 2019

Nuclear Organization And The Epigenetic Landscape Of The Mus Musculus X-Chromosome, Alicia Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

X-linked imprinted genes have been hypothesized to contribute parent-of-origin influences on social cognition. A cluster of imprinted genes Xlr3b, Xlr4b, and Xlr4c, implicated in cognitive defects, are maternally expressed and paternally silent in the murine brain. These genes defy classic mechanisms of autosomal imprinting, suggesting a novel method of imprinted gene regulation. Using Xlr3b and Xlr4c as bait, this study uses 4C-Seq on neonatal whole brain of a 39,XO mouse model, to provide the first in-depth analysis of chromatin dynamics surrounding an imprinted locus on the X-chromosome. Significant differences in long-range contacts exist between XM and X …

Investigation Of Antimicrobial Activity And Metabolic Genes In Bacterial Symbionts Associated With The Female Reproductive System Of The Hawaiian Bobtail Squid, Euprymna Scolopes, Andrea Suria

Doctoral Dissertations

The Hawaiian bobtail squid, Euprymna scolopes, maintains a diverse bacterial consortium in epithelium lined tubules in a female reproductive organ, the accessory nidamental gland (ANG). During egg laying, bacteria from the ANG are deposited into a jelly coat (JC) that surrounds the yolk sac. The ANG/JC communities are composed of Alphaproteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Flavobacteriia, and Gammaproteobacteria. Removing or altering the JC bacterial community leaves eggs vulnerable to biofouling and infections. To understand the metabolism of this community and look for potential mechanisms of egg defense, the antimicrobial activity of ANG/JC symbionts was tested, 4 ANG metagenomes …

Conservation, Acquisition, And Maturation Of Gut And Bladder Symbioses In Hirudo Verbana, Emily Ann Mcclure

Doctoral Dissertations

The medicinal leech is a developing experimental model of gut symbioses. Aeromonas veronii and Mucinivorans hirudinis are core members of the gut microbial community in Hirudo verbana and may aid the leech in digesting the blood meal, preserving the blood meal, and keeping invading bacteria from colonizing the gut. The bladders of H. verbana contain an entirely different microbial consortium. The scientific interest in this symbiosis is currently due to its simple nature and the extreme dietary habits of the leech. In order to increase the usefulness of this model, a more sophisticated understanding of processes by which the microbiome …

Nature And The Poet: A Comparision Of The Poetry Of Joseph Freiherr Von Eichendorff And Kobayashi Issa, Jane Cox Aug 2019

Nature And The Poet: A Comparision Of The Poetry Of Joseph Freiherr Von Eichendorff And Kobayashi Issa, Jane Cox

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the bearing that metaphysical philosophy about nature has on two late 18th century and early 19th century poets. Although living in different hemispheres and cultures, the works of Romantic poet Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff and haikai Kobayashi Issa both used interactions with nature to illustrate their own personal experiences. However, their differing metaphysical beliefs concerning nature impacted their presentation of their experiences as well as their experiences themselves. Eichendorff viewed nature as a medium through which the divine can choose to communicate. Nature’s purpose is to act as a vehicle for the divine. His descriptions …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Long-Acting Rilpivirine Prodrugs, James R. Hilaire

Theses & Dissertations

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) requires lifelong daily dosing to suppress viral replication, restore or maintain immune function and improve quality of life. As an alternative, long-acting (LA) antiretrovirals (ARVs) aim to deliver therapeutic drug concentrations over an extended period, ultimately requiring monthly or even more extended dosing intervals. Specifically, the success of recent clinical trials examining LA cabotegravir and rilpivirine (CAB and RPV LA) highlight the advent of these novel HIV-1 therapeutics. Further optimization of LA dosage forms are required and rests upon improving dosing frequency, injection volumes and tissue distribution to viral compartments. To this end, we report the synthesis …

Low-Power High-Resolution Image Detection, Caleb Merchant Aug 2019

Low-Power High-Resolution Image Detection, Caleb Merchant

Theses and Dissertations

Many image processing algorithms exist that can accurately detect humans and other objects such as vehicles and animals. Many of these algorithms require large amounts of processing often requiring hardware acceleration with powerful central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), etc. Implementing an algorithm that can detect objects such as humans at longer ranges makes these hardware requirements even more strenuous as the numbers of pixels necessary to detect objects at both close ranges and long ranges is greatly increased. Comparing the performance of different low-power implementations can be used to determine a trade-off …

A Machine Learning Approach To Genome Assessment, Charles Adam Thrash Aug 2019

A Machine Learning Approach To Genome Assessment, Charles Adam Thrash

Theses and Dissertations

A key use of high throughput sequencing technology is the sequencing and assembly of full genome sequences. These genome assemblies are commonly assessed using statistics relating to contiguity of the assembly. Measures of contiguity are not strongly correlated with information about the biological completion or correctness of the assembly, and a commonly reported metric, N50, can be misleading. Over the past ten years, multiple research groups have rejected the overuse of N50 and sought to develop more informative metrics. This research seeks to create a ranking method that includes biologically relevant information about the genome, such as completeness and correctness …

The Eye Of The Larval Firefly Photuris: A Structural And Functional Description, Fred Murphy Aug 2019

The Eye Of The Larval Firefly Photuris: A Structural And Functional Description, Fred Murphy

Doctoral Dissertations

Fireflies are bioluminescent beetles and members of the holometabolous clade. As holometabola, fireflies interact with their environment during two stages: larva and adult. I studied firefly stemmata, Photuris genus, with the aim of understanding their ecological utility by identifying structural and functional features of the eye. As a first step toward this goal, I used microscopy to characterize the architecture of firefly stemmata. I concluded that Photuris eyes were a type of fusion-stemmata, evidenced by a bi-lobed organization. Each eye contained 88 photoreceptors that contributed dense interlocking-microvilli forming a fused-rhabdom. In the next section, I tested whether stemmata regulated photo-dependent …
