Even President Obama Makes Mistakes: Why Expansion Of The Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument Was Improper, Leila Javanshir
Even President Obama Makes Mistakes: Why Expansion Of The Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument Was Improper, Leila Javanshir
Seattle University Law Review
In 2000, President Clinton created the Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument to protect the Klamath and Siskiyou ecoregions that are home to a variety of rare and endemic plant and animal species. Later, on January 12, 2017, President Obama expanded the Cascade–Siskiyou National Monument, but timber industry representatives and Oregon counties have challenged this expansion because approximately forty thousand of the additional acres were previously reserved for permanent forest production under the Oregon and California Lands Act of 1937. This Note discusses the creation and expansion of this Monument, elaborating on its history and the purposes behind it, and sets forth the …

A mucosal infectious disease episode can render the host either more or less susceptible to recurrent infection, but the specific mechanisms that tip the balance remain unclear. We investigated this question in a mouse model of recurrent urinary tract infection and found that a prior bladder infection resulted in an earlier onset of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFɑ)-mediated bladder inflammation upon subsequent bacterial challenge, relative to age-matched naive mice. However, the duration of TNFɑ signaling activation differed according to whether the first infection was chronic (Sensitized) or self-limiting (Resolved). TNFɑ depletion studies revealed that transient early-phase TNFɑ signaling in Resolved mice …

Exploring The Implementation Of Lesson-Level Udl Principles Through An Observation Protocol, Joanne M. Van Boxtel, Trisha Sugita
Exploring The Implementation Of Lesson-Level Udl Principles Through An Observation Protocol, Joanne M. Van Boxtel, Trisha Sugita
Education Faculty Articles and Research
The researchers piloted an observational protocol to examine the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and checkpoint strategies used during daily instruction with a small sample of general and special education teachers. Observational research on UDL has been recommended within the literature. Researchers used the high-leverage practice of explicit instruction as the anchor for the design of the observation protocol. Findings indicate there is alignment between observed UDL principles and strategies employed at the lesson level and teachers’ self-reports of the UDL principles and strategies employed. Findings also suggest that teachers are using several UDL principles within their daily instruction …
The Influence Of A Growing Urban Tree Canopy On Municipalities And Urban Stormwater: A Cost Analysis, Lisa Rain
The Influence Of A Growing Urban Tree Canopy On Municipalities And Urban Stormwater: A Cost Analysis, Lisa Rain
Theses
As many cities and local municipalities face the increasing problems associated with climate change, many are turning to trees to rebuild the natural environment and ecosystems within their urban cores. Many are choosing to increase their tree canopies in order to conserve energy, remove carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air, provide habitat for animals, and much more. While urban tree canopies have countless benefits, and should be protected and expanded, they also have costs. These costs are often direct dollar values that fall onto the responsibility of the local municipalities. Costs include maintenance, debris cleanup, irrigation, infrastructure repair, …
Prospects For The Sustainable Management Of Public Oyster Resources, Thomas M. Soniat, Nathan A. Cooper, Eric N. Powell
Prospects For The Sustainable Management Of Public Oyster Resources, Thomas M. Soniat, Nathan A. Cooper, Eric N. Powell
Faculty Publications
Common-pool resources such as public oyster grounds are especially vulnerable to overexploitation and habitat loss. Like those elsewhere, oyster populations and habitat of Louisiana public grounds are in decline. To maintain reef habitat and increase oyster abundance, a sustainable harvest model is applied, which allows harvest above that required to maintain reef cultch stasis. The model is restrained to promote shell gain by limiting fishing by area, type (sack versus seed), effort, and season. Harvest quotas and cultch removal rates derived from shell-budget–based modeling are a foundation for sustainable management of public oyster resources.

This pathbreaking collection, which contains 19 essays from scholars in a variety of fields, illuminates the work of two centuries of American women nature writers. Some discuss traditional nature writers such as Susan Fenimore Cooper, Mary Austin, Gene Stratton Porter, and Annie Dillard. Others examine the work of Zora Neale Hurston, Gloria Anzaldua, and Leslie Marmon Silko, writers not often associated with this genre. Essays on germinal texts such as Marjory Stoneman Douglas's The Everglades: River of Grass stand alongside examinations of market bulletins and women's gardens, showing how the rich diversity of women's nature writing has shaped and expanded …

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation is implicated in coronary heart disease (CHD), but current evidence is based on small, cross-sectional studies. We examined blood DNA methylation in relation to incident CHD across multiple prospective cohorts.
METHODS: Nine population-based cohorts from the United States and Europe profiled epigenome-wide blood leukocyte DNA methylation using the Illumina Infinium 450k microarray, and prospectively ascertained CHD events including coronary insufficiency/unstable angina, recognized myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, and coronary death. Cohorts conducted race-specific analyses adjusted for age, sex, smoking, education, body mass index, blood cell type proportions, and technical variables. We conducted fixed-effect meta-analyses across cohorts.
RESULTS: Among …

Genetically-Encoded Sensors To Detect Fatty Acid Production And Trafficking, Emilio P. Mottillo
Genetically-Encoded Sensors To Detect Fatty Acid Production And Trafficking, Emilio P. Mottillo
Hypertension and Vascular Research Articles
Objective: Fatty acids are important for biological function; however, in excess, they can cause metabolic dysregulation. Methods to image and detect fatty acids in real time are lacking. Therefore, the current study examined the dynamics of fatty acid trafficking and signaling utilizing novel fluorescent and luminescent approaches.
Methods: We generated fluorescent and luminescent-based genetically-encoded sensors based upon the ligand-dependent interaction between PPARα and SRC-1 to image and detect cellular dynamics of fatty acid trafficking.
Results: The use of a fluorescent sensor demonstrates that fatty acids traffic rapidly from lipid droplets to the nucleus. Both major lipases ATGL and HSL contribute …

The Influence Of Neighborhood Landscape Characteristics On Native Bird Communities: Implications For Increasing Biodiversity In Our Yards, Michael E. Vermeulen
The Influence Of Neighborhood Landscape Characteristics On Native Bird Communities: Implications For Increasing Biodiversity In Our Yards, Michael E. Vermeulen
Dissertations and Theses
Avian communities, because of their potential high diversity, are ideal for studying the response to potential quantity of resources provided by local and regional habitat. Urban neighborhoods vary in types and magnitudes of anthropogenic stressors they experience, resulting in a continuum of anthropogenic disturbance, often referred to as a gradient of urbanization. The aim of this study was to investigate anthropogenic drivers of urban bird communities in three Portland, OR neighborhoods (Hillsdale, Lents, and Pearl). The three major questions of this study were: 1) What are the significant landscape traits that characterize the neighborhoods? 2) Is there evidence that the …

Ecological Effectiveness Of Protected Areas In Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem, Northern Tanzania, Francesca Spruiell
Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research
Protected areas in Tanzania, while plentiful, are not routinely monitored. So, little insight into the areas? successes or failures in the meeting of their goals for animal population maintenance is produced. This study assessed the conservation efforts of protected areas in the Tarangire-Manyara ecosystem through the monitoring of population densities of five species: elephant (Loxodonta africana), giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi), zebra (Equus quagga), wildebeest (Connochaetes), impala (Aepyceros melampus). We drove terrestrial line transects seasonally- dry, long rains, and short rains- from 2011 to 2018 in four conservation areas of varying protection levels: Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park, Manyara …

Pet Policies And Rental Prices: How Do Pet Restrictions Affect Rental Prices?, Brian Smith
Creative Collaborations: Annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research
This research examines the relationship between pet restrictions and condominium sales prices. It will focus on sales of condominiums in the Downtown San Diego area. There is expected to be a premium in sales prices of condominiums without pet restrictions due to the theory that potential buyers with pets will be less sensitive to price increases.

Heterotrophic protists play pivotal roles in aquatic ecosystems by transferring matter and energy, including lipids, from primary producers to higher trophic predators. Using Oxyrrhis marina as a model organism, changes to the non-saponifiable protist lipids were investigated under satiation and starvation conditions. During active feeding on the alga Cryptomonas sp., the O. marina hexane soluble non-saponifiable fraction lipid profile reflected its food source with the observed presence of long chain mono-unsaturated fatty alcohols up to C25:1. Evidence of trophic upgrading in O. marina was observed with long chain mono-unsaturated fatty alcohol accumulation of up to C35:1. To the best of …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Bos indicus females have more surface antral follicles than Bos taurus females; however, histological studies demonstrated no difference in total number of primordial follicles between these two biological types of cattle. Primordial follicle density in the ovary was less in Nelore ovaries compared to Angus ovaries, but no studies have examined the primordial follicle density in Bos indicus cross-bred females. It, therefore, was hypothesized that primordial follicle density in the ovary would decrease as percentage Bos indicus increased. Ovaries were collected from cross-bred Angus (n=32, no Bos indicus influence), Brangus (n=15), or Brahman (n=9) …

Evaluating Urban Odor With Field Olfactometry In Camden, Nj, Jennifer L. Kitson, Monica Leiva, Zachary Christman, Pamela Dalton
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
Odor annoyance negatively impacts residents of communities adjacent to persistent nuisance industries. These residents, often with a high percentage of minority or otherwise marginalized residents, experience subjective and objective impacts on health and well-being; yet, reliable methods for quantifying and categorizing odors have been elusive. Field olfactometry is integral to the study of odor annoyance experienced by communities as it includes both qualitative (human perception) and quantitative (intensity measurement) dimensions of human odor experience and has been employed by municipalities in the U.S. to evaluate odor pollution levels. Cartographic visualization of odor data recorded using a field olfactometer offers further …
