Transcriptome Profiling Of Brain Myeloid Cells Revealed Activation Of Itgal, Trem1, And Spp1 In Western Diet-Induced Obesity., Hongtian Yang, Leah C. Graham, Alaina M Reagan, Weronika Grabowska, William H. Schott, Gareth R Howell

Faculty Research 2019

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors are critical in the development of age-related cognitive decline and dementia. A western diet (WD) can cause nutrient deficiency and inflammation that could impact cognition directly. It is increasingly recognized that innate immune responses by brain myeloid cells, such as resident microglia, and infiltrating peripheral monocytes/macrophages may represent an essential link between a WD, cognitive decline, and dementia. Our previous data demonstrated that chronic consumption of a WD induced inflammation through brain myeloid cells in aging mice and a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the subtypes of myeloid cells that contribute to the WD-induced inflammation …

Visualizing The Fate And Distribution Of Pahs In Spartina And Avicennia Tissues From Barataria Basin, La, Kristina Jeannette Sebastian

LSU Master's Theses

During crude oil spill events, vegetation in marsh environments sequester polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the crude oil by partitioning from the air phase through the waxy cuticle on the leaf surface. Recent studies from Macondo oil-impacted marshes have demonstrated that cycling of low molecular weight petrogenic PAHs occurs through the cuticle and other leaf tissue. At present, our understanding of how PAHs travel through the cuticle is coarse and limited by grab samples across the entire leaf, which preventing a full understanding the dynamics of PAH cycling in this environment. Multiphoton (MP) confocal microscopy visualizes the distribution of PAHs …

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system with prominent neurodegenerative components. The triggering and progression of MS is associated with transcriptional and epigenetic alterations in several tissues, including peripheral blood. The combined influence of transcriptional and epigenetic changes associated with MS has not been assessed in the same individuals. Here we generated paired transcriptomic (RNA-seq) and DNA methylation (Illumina 450 K array) profiles of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells (CD4, CD8), using clinically accessible blood from healthy donors and MS patients in the initial relapsing-remitting and subsequent secondary-progressive stage. By integrating the output of a …

Lactonic Sophorolipid Increases Surface Wettability Of Poly- L -Lactic Acid Electrospun Fibers, Alexis M. Ziemba, Keith P. Lane, Bailey Balouch, Anthony R. D'Amato, Filbert Totsingan, Richard A. Gross, Ryan J. Gilbert Aug 2019

Lactonic Sophorolipid Increases Surface Wettability Of Poly- L -Lactic Acid Electrospun Fibers, Alexis M. Ziemba, Keith P. Lane, Bailey Balouch, Anthony R. D'Amato, Filbert Totsingan, Richard A. Gross, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The hydrophobicity of electro spun poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) fibers hinders their integration with surrounding tissue for a variety of applications. In this study, we increased PLLA fiber hydrophilicity by incorporating the natural surfactant, lactonic sophorolipid (LSL). PLLA+LSL fibers had similar fiber morphology but significantly greater surface wettability, which suggested LSL accumulation on the fiber surface. Differential scanning calorimetry results also suggested that LSL was phase separated from PLLA. Despite the altered surface wettability of these fibers, there was no change in fibroblast adhesion. Future studies may explore the use of this natural surfactant to deliver bioactive factors to enhance fibroblast …

Not On My News Feed: Predicting The Support Of Gay Content Censorship On Social Media, Stephen D. Berry Aug 2019

Not On My News Feed: Predicting The Support Of Gay Content Censorship On Social Media, Stephen D. Berry

Student Theses and Dissertations

Media has served as a platform for individuals and groups to express themselves and represent their identities. Such practices have consistently been regulated throughout time; governments and intermediaries have engaged in acts of censorship to prohibit content deemed controversial. Whether for legal and moral purposes (e.g., governmental censorship) or for economic and publicity purposes by a private entity (e.g., censorship by proxy), media has continually been vetted and judged. This has resulted in the intentional and unintentional censorship of gay content. In contrast to previous exploratory research that investigated psychological variables that contribute to the support of gay content censorship …

Human Polyomavirus Jcpyv And Its Role In Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy And Oncogenesis, Luis Del Valle, Sergio Piña-Oviedo

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The human neurotropic virus JCPyV, a member of the family, is the opportunistic infectious agent of Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a fatal disease seen in severe immunosuppressive conditions and, during the last decade, in patients undergoing immunotherapy. JCPyV is a ubiquitous pathogen with up to 85% of the adult population word-wide exhibiting antibodies against it. Early experiments demonstrated that direct inoculation of JCPyV into the brain of different species resulted in the development of brain tumors and other neuroectodermal-derived neoplasias. Later, several reports showed the detection of viral sequences in medulloblastomas and glial tumors, as well as expression of the …

Heterotrophic protists play pivotal roles in aquatic ecosystems by transferring matter and energy, including lipids, from primary producers to higher trophic predators. Using Oxyrrhis marina as a model organism, changes to the non-saponifiable protist lipids were investigated under satiation and starvation conditions. During active feeding on the alga Cryptomonas sp., the O. marina hexane soluble non-saponifiable fraction lipid profile reflected its food source with the observed presence of long chain mono-unsaturated fatty alcohols up to C25:1. Evidence of trophic upgrading in O. marina was observed with long chain mono-unsaturated fatty alcohol accumulation of up to C35:1. To the best of …

Avian Dispersal Networks, Metacommunity Structure, And Bryophyte Community Assemblages, Matthew Wojciech Chmielewski Aug 2019

Avian Dispersal Networks, Metacommunity Structure, And Bryophyte Community Assemblages, Matthew Wojciech Chmielewski

Dissertations and Theses

Spatial processes have a profound influence on the structure and function of community assemblages. The dispersal of organisms from their place of origin to the location in which they live out their reproductive life is particularly important for plant communities, which generally cannot adjust their location post-germination. Connection between communities at a landscape scale can also influence species persistence, local and regional diversity, and functional turnover at the metacommunity scale. Animals have been shown to disproportionately deposit propagules in particular microsites in many plant species, facilitating the arrival of plants to appropriate niche-space. Birds are particularly notable seed dispersers, given …

Contract Law And The Liberalism Of Fear, Nathan B. Oman Aug 2019

Contract Law And The Liberalism Of Fear, Nathan B. Oman

Faculty Publications

Liberalism’s concern with human freedom seems related to contractual freedom and thus contract law. There are, however, many strands of liberal thought and which of them best justifies contract is a difficult question. In The Choice Theory of Contracts, Hanoch Dagan and Michael Heller offer a vision of contract based on autonomy. Drawing on the work of Joseph Raz, they argue that extending autonomy should be the law’s primary concern, which requires that we extend the range of contractual choices available. While there is much to admire in their work, I argue that autonomy as conceived by Dagan and Heller …

Assessment Of The Biocompatibilty, Stability, And Suitability Of Natural And Synthetic Polymers And Drugs In The Fda Approval Process, Phuong Anh Hoang Nguyen

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Regulation of the development, production, marketing, and sales of medical pharmaceuticals and devices in the United States fall under the regulatory functions of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The current FDA approval process takes an average of 10 years from start to completion, and costs over $100 million. As a result, companies use many different methods to find additional use of their drugs through marketing directly to the physician, or recycling of previously approved drug moieties. In this work, an evaluation of the in vitro and ex vivo biocompatibility of polymers and drugs in different phases of FDA approval …

Modeling Vertical Migration Of Cyanobacteria And Zooplankton, Corina Christina Mae Overman Aug 2019

Modeling Vertical Migration Of Cyanobacteria And Zooplankton, Corina Christina Mae Overman

Dissertations and Theses

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, often cause harmful algal blooms and release toxic substances that can harm humans and other animals. Accurately modeling these phytoplankton is a step towards predicting, preventing, and controlling such blooms. Cyanobacteria and zooplankton species are known to migrate vertically in the water column on a daily cycle. Capturing this behavior is one aspect of correctly modeling their dynamics. Here, several models of cyanobacteria vertical movement were tested in proof-of-concept models before being applied to data from field studies. These models included both continuum and particle-tracking frameworks. Four continuum-framework models of cyanobacteria vertical migration were …

Todays, maintaining atmospheric health is one of the most important prerequisites for sustainable global economic development, and the international community has no choice but to switch to renewable energies, including solar energy. The goal of the study was to provide a temperature of 60 ° C for drying summer fruits such as apricots therefore we investigated the effect of temperature control systems on the solar-electrical collector performance. Three LM35 temperature sensors were placed at 3 points of the collector (before the air inlet to the collector, after the air outlet from the collector and after heating elements) that were linked …

Alaska Native Studies Unit For Fourth Grade Using Place-Based Education, Project-Based Learning, Cooperative Learning And Indigenous Knowledge, Katy Celeste Thompson Aug 2019

Alaska Native Studies Unit For Fourth Grade Using Place-Based Education, Project-Based Learning, Cooperative Learning And Indigenous Knowledge, Katy Celeste Thompson

Education

As a fourth-grade educator who was responsible for teaching social studies, specifically meeting the Alaska Standards that focus on Alaska’s history of Indigenous peoples it is incredibly important that I teach accurately and genuinely. This has been a weak area of mine, since I am not from the state of Alaska. Therefore, it is an area that I wanted to further develop in my teaching practices. I developed an integrated social studies quarter long (nine weeks) unit for fourth grade that focuses on the history of Alaska from the Indigenous viewpoint. There are countless atrocities that occurred to the Indigenous …

Indigenous-Crown Relations In Canada And The Yukon: The Peel Watershed Case, 2017, Lauren Alexandra Baranik Aug 2019

Indigenous-Crown Relations In Canada And The Yukon: The Peel Watershed Case, 2017, Lauren Alexandra Baranik

Arctic and Northern Studies

The history of Indigenous-Crown relations in Canada has varied regionally and temporally. With the Constitution Act of 1982, however, Canada entered a new era. Section 35 of the Constitution recognized Indigenous treaty and land rights, and the Supreme Court of Canada has consistently interpreted this section liberally in favor of Canada's Indigenous Peoples. The Court has upheld the honour of the Crown in emphasizing the national and subnational governments' duty to consult diligently when engaging in development on the traditional territories of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit. The "citizens-plus" model of asserting and protecting Indigenous rights, first coined in the …

Risk Analysis Of Cordova's Microgrid From A Complex Systems Viewpoint, Anna Lipetzky Bowker Aug 2019

Risk Analysis Of Cordova's Microgrid From A Complex Systems Viewpoint, Anna Lipetzky Bowker

Physics

Cordova is a town of approximately 2,000 people located on the southern coast of Alaska. A power grid for a town this size, with a large seasonal fishing economy, is considered a moderate to large sized microgrid in terms of power produced. Understanding the vulnerabilities and risks of failures in such a grid is important for planning and operations and investigating these characteristics in the context of complex system dynamics is novel. The analysis of Cordova's microgrid is a case study relevant to a large class of microgrid communities that could benefit from this work. Our analysis of this grid …

Mechanisms Regulating The Circannual Rhythm Of Hibernation, Carla Frare Aug 2019

Mechanisms Regulating The Circannual Rhythm Of Hibernation, Carla Frare

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Hibernation is a unique adaptation to conserve energy entering a hypometabolic (low metabolic rate) and hypothermic (low body temperature) state called torpor. Torpor is characterized by a drop in metabolism to 1-2% of basal metabolic rate and a decrease in body temperature to one to two degrees above ambient temperature. Metabolic rate is restored to basal metabolic rate and body temperature increases from 2-3⁰C to 36⁰C during the regularly timed arousal. The adenosine A1 receptor agonists promote the onset of hibernation and torpor in different species, through a yet undefined neuronal circuit. In the Arctic ground squirrel, CHA, an adenosine …

Odds Of Acute Kidney Injury In Patients Receiving Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4 Inhibitors: A National Cohort Study Within The Department Of Veterans Affairs, Shawn Scott Sutton, Joseph Maggnoli, Tammy H. Cummings, James W. Hardin

Faculty Publications

Preclinical and clinical data of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP‐4) inhibitors have demonstrated discordant data regarding acute kidney injury (AKI). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between DPP‐4 use and AKI. This cohort study utilized data from the Department of Veterans Affairs evaluating patients diagnosed with type 2 (T2) diabetes with a DPP‐4 inhibitor and compared with nondiabetic and diabetic patients. The primary end point is the development of AKI, and statistical analyses were performed to examine the association. DPP‐4 use is associated with a lower odds of AKI compared with diabetics (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.39; 95% confidence …

The Taming Of The Stew: Humans, Reindeer, Caribou And Food Systems On The Southwestern Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Odin Tarka Miller Aug 2019

The Taming Of The Stew: Humans, Reindeer, Caribou And Food Systems On The Southwestern Seward Peninsula, Alaska, Odin Tarka Miller

Anthropology

This thesis addresses the question, what is the role of reindeer within communities of Alaska's southwestern Seward Peninsula, particularly as a food source? Employing a mixed-method approach, I conducted several months' fieldwork in the Seward Peninsula communities of Nome and Teller between 2016 and 2018, using methods that included participant observation, ethnographic interviews and a household survey designed to describe and quantify use of reindeer as food. As two varieties of the same species, Rangifer tarandus, reindeer and caribou are very similar in appearance. When caribou herds migrate nearby, reindeer tend to join them and become feral. Given the important …

Learning From The Local Scale: Identifying And Addressing Local Blind Spots In Arctic Environmental Governance, Tracie Curry Aug 2019

Learning From The Local Scale: Identifying And Addressing Local Blind Spots In Arctic Environmental Governance, Tracie Curry

Natural Resources

Environmental governance in the context of climate change adaptation brings together diverse actors and stakeholders to develop and enact policies across a broad range of scales. However, local needs and priorities are often mismatched with those pursued by entities at different levels of decision-making. This mismatch is perpetuated, in part, by the dominating influence of the Western worldview in knowledge processes involving the creation, sharing, and use of environmental knowledge. Persistent biases that favor Western science and technical information while marginalizing other important sources like local and Indigenous knowledge create blind spots that may adversely affect adaptation outcomes. In this …

The Effect Of Rate, Frequency, And Form Of Migration On Host Parasite Population Dynamics, Geneva Mottet Aug 2019

The Effect Of Rate, Frequency, And Form Of Migration On Host Parasite Population Dynamics, Geneva Mottet

Physics

What is the effect of migration on host-parasite population dynamics? Animals live in a landscape where they move between patches. They are also locked in host-parasite conflicts. Host-parasite interactions are modeled with consumer resource functions. I constructed models using two different consumer resource functions (the Lotka Volterra system and the Saturating Type II system). The first model was a conservative system. The second was dissipative and more biologically realistic. I examined the effect of rate of migration, time between migration events, and form of migration. I found that the time between migration events had the largest effect on the synchronization …

Faunal Analysis Of The Historic Component At Healy Lake Village Site, Interior Alaska, Hilary A. Hilmer Aug 2019

Faunal Analysis Of The Historic Component At Healy Lake Village Site, Interior Alaska, Hilary A. Hilmer

Anthropology

The historic period in Interior Alaska was a dynamic time that led to many cultural changes for Native Alaskan communities across the state. Starting in the early 1700s, Russian and Euroamerican explorers began interacting with Native Alaskan groups living on the coast and by the end of the 18th century - early 19th century, Interior Alaskan groups were being directly affected. Due to western influences, Native groups, such as the Upper Tanana Athabascans, began to rely on a cash economy, causing them to settle to year-round villages, trade with the Euroamericans for non-local goods (i.e., flour, guns, buttons, glass, and …

Indigenous Archaeological Approaches To Artifact And Household Analysis At Precolonial Yup'ik Village Temyiq Tuyuryaq (Old Togiak), Dougless I. Skinner Aug 2019

Indigenous Archaeological Approaches To Artifact And Household Analysis At Precolonial Yup'ik Village Temyiq Tuyuryaq (Old Togiak), Dougless I. Skinner

Anthropology

Upper Bristol Bay is home to a multitude of precolonial-and colonial-era villages dotting the coast, islands, and rivers. The bay's dynamic history remains relatively unexplored in archaeological literature. Current data situate people in the region for nearly 6000 years, living in complex, semi-permanent villages, subsisting on large land and sea mammals, fish and mollusks. One such village is Temyiq Tuyuryaq or Old Togiak (GDN-00203). The village is a mounded accumulation of household cycles, sand and organic materials atop an accreting sand spit in the Togiak Bay. Ancestral to Nutaraq Tuyuryaq [New Togiak], the village directly links precolonial and modern Yup'ik …

Evaluating The Effects Of Sanitizing Drinker Lines In Commercial Broiler Houses On The Water Quality And Microbial Content In Biofilm Layers, Kennedi Achilles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of water quality and its ability to cause major impacts, whether it is positive or negative, is often overlooked in the poultry industry. The microbial content of water is just one of many water characteristics that need to be monitored and regulated to ensure a flock is receiving good quality water. A field study was conducted to determine the effects of four different sanitizers under commercial broiler house conditions, with three replications over a three flock period. Each flock was grown for 56 days with a 2 week period between each flock. Four oxidative sanitizers were used and …

Paleobiology Of Ichthyosaurs: Using Osteohistology To Test Hypotheses Of Growth Rates And Metabolism In A Clade Of Secondarily Aquatic Marine Tetrapods, Katherine L. Anderson Aug 2019

Paleobiology Of Ichthyosaurs: Using Osteohistology To Test Hypotheses Of Growth Rates And Metabolism In A Clade Of Secondarily Aquatic Marine Tetrapods, Katherine L. Anderson

Geosciences

Ichthyosaurians (Ichthyosauria) are one of the most prominent groups of secondarily aquatic Mesozoic marine reptiles. Over their 160 million years of evolution, the clade evolved a streamlined body plan with paddle-like limbs, convergent with modern cetaceans. Despite the fact that ichthyosaurians have been studied by paleontologists for over a century, very little is known about aspects of their biology, including quantification of their age structure and growth rates. Multiple lines of evidence, including oxygen isotope, swimming modality, and body shape analyses suggest that ichthyosaurians experienced elevated growth rates and likely maintained an elevated body temperature relative to ambient sea water. …

“No Country For Old Men”: Huxley’S Brave New World And The Value Of Old Age, Maren Linett Aug 2019

“No Country For Old Men”: Huxley’S Brave New World And The Value Of Old Age, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

This article inserts Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932) into a bioethical conversation about the value of old age and old people. Exploring literary treatments of bioethical questions can supplement conversations within bioethics proper, helping to reveal our existing assumptions and clear the way for more considered views; indeed, as Peter Swirski has argued, literary texts can serve as thought experiments that illuminate the ramifications of philosophical ideas. This essay examines the novel's representation of a society without old people in conjunction with ideas about aging and life narratives put forward by philosophers and bioethicists such as Ezekiel Emanuel, Gilbert …
