© 2019 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. All rights reserved. Understanding the role of biotic interactions in shaping natural communities is a long-standing challenge in ecology. It is particularly pertinent to parasite communities sharing the same host communities and individuals, as the interactions among parasites—both competition and facilitation—may have far-reaching implications for parasite transmission and evolution. Aggregated parasite burdens may suggest that infected host individuals are either more prone to infection, or that infection by a parasite species facilitates another, leading to a positive parasite–parasite interaction. However, parasite species may also compete for host resources, leading to the …

Using Traditional Ecological Knowledge To Understand And Adapt To Climate And Biodiversity Change On The Pacific Coast Of North America, V. R. De Echeverria, Thomas F. Thornton
Faculty, Staff, and Students
We investigate the perceptions and impacts of climate change on 11 Indigenous communities in Northern British Columbia and Southeast Alaska. This coastal region constitutes an extremely dynamic and resilient social-ecological system where Indigenous Peoples have been adjusting to changing climate and biodiversity for millennia. The region is a bellwether for biodiversity changes in coastal, forest, and montane environments that link the arctic to more southerly latitudes on the Pacific coast. Ninety-six Elders and resource users were interviewed to record Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and observations regarding weather, landscape, and resource changes, especially as concerns what we term Cultural Keystone Indicator …

C. Elegans Synmuv B Proteins Regulate Spatial And Temporal Chromatin Compaction During Development, Meghan Elizabeth Costello, Lisa N. Petrella
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Tissue-specific establishment of repressive chromatin through creation of compact chromatin domains during development is necessary to ensure proper gene expression and cell fate. Caenorhabditis elegans synMuv B proteins are important for the soma/germline fate decision and mutants demonstrate ectopic germline gene expression in somatic tissue, especially at high temperature. We show that C. elegans synMuv B proteins regulate developmental chromatin compaction and that the timing of chromatin compaction is temperature sensitive in both wild type and synMuv B mutants. Chromatin compaction in mutants is delayed into developmental time periods when zygotic gene expression is upregulated and demonstrates an anterior-to-posterior pattern. …

A Current Update On Human Papillomavirus-Associated Head And Neck Cancers., Ebenezer Tumban
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the cause of a growing percentage of head and neck cancers (HNC); primarily, a subset of oral squamous cell carcinoma, oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. The majority of HPV-associated head and neck cancers (HPV + HNC) are caused by HPV16; additionally, co-factors such as smoking and immunosuppression contribute to the progression of HPV + HNC by interfering with tumor suppressor miRNA and impairing mediators of the immune system. This review summarizes current studies on HPV + HNC, ranging from potential modes of oral transmission of HPV (sexual, self-inoculation, vertical and horizontal …

Postbreeding Habitat Use By Golden-Cheeked Warblers (Setophaga Chrysoparia), Melanie R. Colón, Mark R. Hutchinson, Ashley M. Long, Gary Voelker, Michael L. Morrison
Western North American Naturalist
The period following breeding but prior to migration is an important, though understudied, component of the avian annual life cycle. We quantified habitat use by endangered Golden-cheeked Warblers (Setophaga chrysoparia) during the postbreeding period in Golden-cheeked Warbler breeding habitat (i.e., oak-juniper [Quercus-Juniperus] woodlands) predominated by Texas oak (Quercus buckleyi) or post oak (Q. stellata), as well as in immediately adjacent oak woodland, oak savanna, and riparian vegetation not usually associated with breeding activity for this species. Most (87%) of the Golden-cheeked Warblers we detected were in oak-juniper woodlands, especially in Texas oak …

Northern Yellowstone Mule Deer Seasonal Movement, Habitat Selection, And Survival Patterns, Peter J. P. Gogan, Robert W. Klaver, Edward M. Olexa
Western North American Naturalist
We determined the movement patterns and survival rates of 85 radio-marked adult female Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) wintering on the Northern Yellowstone Winter Range (NYWR). We assessed seasonal movement and distribution patterns and individual fidelity to those patterns, along with seasonal habitat selection and survival rates. Twenty-three percent of the deer were nonmigratory, remaining on the winter range year-round, and 77% were migratory, moving 10–104 km from winter to summer ranges. No deer switched between migratory and nonmigratory status. All migratory deer that were monitored for ≥2 years exhibited traditional movement patterns and utilized …

Presumed Diffuse Unilateral Subacute Neuroretinitis: A Review Supported By A Unique Case, Kirsti K. Ramirez Od, Joseph Pizzimenti Od, Jeannette Wong-Powell Od, Jeffrey Rabin Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) is a rare, sight-threatening inflammatory condition caused by a nematode. It typically affects healthy children and young adults. Various nematodes have been implicated, including those that originate from dogs and raccoons. Late stage findings include optic nerve atrophy, retinal arterial attenuation, “retinitis pigmentosa-like” retinal pigmentary changes, and central and peripheral vision loss. We present a case study of long-standing DUSN. The combination of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual electrophysiology testing proved invaluable in establishing a presumptive diagnosis of this rare condition.

Anterior Subcapsular Cataract Secondary To Black Mold Exposure, Katherine B. Lynch Od, Bruce A. Teitelbaum Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
A case report of a 31-year-old woman who developed anterior subacapsular cataracts, and associated dermatological signs, after exposure to black mold. While atopic illness is commonly seen in childhood, a growing body of literature supports adult onset atopic dermatitis. Anterior subcapsular cataracts are pathognomonic for atopic illness, and can support a definitive and expedited dermatologic diagnosis of adult onset disease.

The Tail Wagging The Dog: Positive Attitude Towards Livestock Guarding Dogs Do Not Mitigate Pastoralists’ Opinions Of Wolves Or Grizzly Bears, Daniel Kinka, Julie K. Young
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
While the re-establishment of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) and wolves (Canis lupus) in the American West marks a success for conservation, it has been contentious among pastoralists. Coincidentally, livestock guarding dogs (LGDs; Canis familiaris) have been widely adopted by producers of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) in the United States to mitigate livestock depredation by wild carnivores. We surveyed pastoralists to measure how experience with and attitudes towards LGDs related to attitudes towards livestock predators, and found positive responses regarding LGDs and negative responses regarding wolves and grizzly bears. The more respondents agreed that …

G-quadruplexes (G4s) and i-motifs (iMs) are tetraplex DNA structures. Sequences capable of forming G4/iMs are abundant near the transcription start sites (TSS) of several genes. G4/iMs affect gene expression in vitro. Depending on the gene, the presence of G4/iMs can enhance or suppress expression, making it challenging to discern the underlying mechanism by which they operate. Factors affecting G4/iM structures can provide additional insight into their mechanism of regulation. One such factor is epigenetic modification. The 5-hydroxymethylated cytosines (5hmCs) are epigenetic modifications that occur abundantly in human embryonic stem cells (hESC). The 5hmCs, like G4/iMs, are known to participate in …
Three-Dimensional Daily Hindcast Of Oil Concentrations And Oil Mass Estimates From The Far-Field Modeling Of A Deepwater Oil Spill Scenario In The Cuban Continental Shelf, Using The Connectivity Modeling System On A Probabilistic Approach, Natalie Perlin
C-IMAGE data
The dataset contains the numerical results of probabilistic forecasts for possible oil spills in the Cuban Western Continental Shelf and two animation figures (*.gif) of model results. The origin of possible oil spills scenarios is deep wells proposed to operate in and around Cabo San Antonio. Oil dispersal and concentrations were simulated using the latest updated version of the oil application of the Connectivity Modeling System (CMS) or oil-CMS. In this version, the specified hydrocarbon pseudo-components are in the same droplet. The post-processing analysis yielded 4-D spatiotemporal data of the oil concentrations and oil mass on a regular horizontal and …
