Lithostratigraphy And Palaeontology Of The ‘Black Shale’ Facies Of The Semanggol Formation (Chert Unit) At Bukit Merah (Perak, Peninsular Malaysia), Joannemarie Estelle Liew, José Antonio Gámez Vintaned
Platform: A Journal of Engineering (PAJE)
In the Semanggol formation cropping out in Northern Perak, a ‘black shale’ facies was identified at the lowermost level of the chert unit at Bukit Merah, containing trace and body fossils. Despite some recent contributions made in Northern Perak outcrops, some questions about the origin of the ‘black shale’ facies remain open, particularly its depositional palaeoenvironment, palaeo-oxygenation history and biochronological age. Moreover, the presence of trace and body fossils in the facies contradicts ‘classical’ views of the ‘black shales’ of the Semanggol formation. Therefore, this study aims to describe the lithostratigraphic and palaeontological contents of the facies, as well as …

NRF2 is a redox-sensitive transcription factor that depending on the duration or magnitude of the stress, either translocates to the nucleus (beneficial) or is degraded in the cytosol (harmful). However, the role of NRF2-based mechanism(s) under ethanol (E)-induced developmental toxicity in the placental context remains unknown. Here, we used a rat prenatal model of maternal alcohol stress consisting of intermittent ethanol vapor (IEV) daily from GD11 to GD20 with a 6 h ON/18 h OFF in a vapor chamber and in vitro placental model consisting of HTR-8 trophoblasts exposed to 86 mM of E for either 24 h or 48 …

Integrated Role Of Intramuscular Inflammation, Dietary Protein, And Testosterone Supplementation In The Regulation Of Skeletal Muscle Mass During Muscle Wasting Conditions, Emily E. Howard
Doctoral Dissertations
Skeletal muscle atrophy occurs with disuse after musculoskeletal injury, and during periods of sustained energy deficit. Manipulating dietary protein intake or supplementing with testosterone under muscle wasting conditions may protect muscle mass and/or function by increasing muscle protein synthesis, attenuating muscle protein breakdown, and enhancing myogenesis either directly or via upstream modulation of inflammatory signaling. The protective effect of dietary protein was evaluated in Study 1. Vastus lateralis muscle collected perioperatively from anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction patients assigned to an optimal (OP: 2.0 g·kg-1·d-1, n =3) or adequate (AP: 1.0 g·kg-1·d-1, …
Consequences Of Self-Interested Behavior: Pedagogical Questions And Dilemmas Relating To Cases Of A Closed Adoption And A Regional Landfill Proposal, J Forbes Farmer
Consequences Of Self-Interested Behavior: Pedagogical Questions And Dilemmas Relating To Cases Of A Closed Adoption And A Regional Landfill Proposal, J Forbes Farmer
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Abstract
The motive of self-interest is the driving factor behind many situations faced by those who have chosen the human services profession. In this article, the author provides two of his own fact-based human service cases (one involving case work and the psychological needs related to a closed adoption and one about community organization and advocacy related to a proposed regional landfill) that can be studied and debated in social work classes. The cases reflect the double identity of contemporary social work. The questions after each case require the students to reflect on and talk about the ramifications of self-interested …

Fewer Wetlands More Connectivity: Implications Of Land Use-Land Cover Change In An Agricultural Landscape, Stephanie Lawlor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
St. Lucie County (SLC) is a 1,782 km2 area in east-central Florida that drains to the Nationally Significant Indian River Lagoon (IRL). It is low lying and nearly level, with widespread non-floodplain wetlands (NFWs) and few natural channels. NFWs comprise the vast majority of SLC wetlands, both in terms of numbers and area. Since the early 20th century, SLC has undergone extensive land use-land cover (LULC) change and is now characterized by citrus farming in the interior and municipalities on its eastern coast on the Atlantic Ocean. This LULC change has been made possible by the construction of an extensive …

Social Proximity In Dairy Calves Is Affected By Differences In Pessimism, B Lecorps, S Kappel, Dm Weary, Mag Von Keyserlingk
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Negative social interactions have been extensively studied in dairy cattle, but little is known about the establishment of positive (preferential) relationships. Adult dairy cows are known to spend more time at close proximity to specific social partners, indicating that they establish stronger bonds with these animals, but few studies have explored what happens in socially housed calves. In this study, we explored whether calves that spent their entire life in the same social group established social preferences (i.e. pairs of individuals that interact more) that are stable over time (two 48-h periods, separated by three days), across two types of …

A Private Enforcement Remedy For Information Misuse, Peter Ormerod
Faculty Publications
Misuse of users’ personally identifiable information is persistent and pervasive. This Article addresses two questions: why is information misuse so common and so severe and how could domestic law change to make it less so? I use a simple model to illustrate that companies externalize information misuse costs onto users, which has two related but distinct effects: chronic underinvest- ment in information security and excessive retention of user data. I then seize on this observation to propose a specific legal vehicle at the heart of this Article—a private enforcement remedy. This private enforcement remedy has four essential features. First, the …

The nucleus pulposus (NP) cells adapt to their physiologically hyperosmotic microenvironment through Tonicity-responsive enhancer binding protein (TonEBP/nuclear factor of activated T-cell5 [NFAT5])-mediated osmoregulation. Primary cilia in different organs serve diverse roles including osmosensing, but its contribution to NP cell osmoadaptive response is unknown. A high percentage of cultured primary NP cells possessed primary cilia that changed length in response to osmotic stimuli. Stable silencing of Intraflagellar Transport 88 (Ift88) or Kinesin Family Member 3 A (Kif3a) to inhibit the formation of primary cilia did not affect hyperosmotic upregulation of TonEBP. While ShKif3a blocked hyperosmotic increase of TonEBP-Transactivation Domain (TAD) activity, …

Oxytocin (OXT) is an important neuromodulator of social behaviors via activation of both oxytocin receptors (OXTR) and vasopressin (AVP) 1a receptors (AVPR1a). Marmosets are neotropical primates with a modified OXT ligand (Pro8-OXT), and this ligand shows significant coevolution with traits including social monogamy and litter size. Pro8-OXT produces more potent and efficacious responses at primate OXTR and stronger behavioral effects than the consensus mammalian OXT ligand (Leu8-OXT). Here, we tested whether OXT/AVP ligands show differential levels of crosstalk at primate AVPR1a. We measured binding affinities and Ca2+ signaling responses of AVP, Pro8-OXT and Leu8-OXT at human, macaque, and marmoset AVPR1a. …
