Evaluating The Evidence Base For Evidence-Based Instructional Practices In Chemistry Through Meta-Analysis, Md Tawabur Rahman Oct 2019

Evaluating The Evidence Base For Evidence-Based Instructional Practices In Chemistry Through Meta-Analysis, Md Tawabur Rahman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Investigating the effectiveness of instructional practices provides an evidence base to inform instructional decisions. Synthesizing research studies on instructional effectiveness provides an estimate of the generalizability of effectiveness across settings, along with an exploration of factors that may moderate the impact, which cannot be achieved within individual studies. This study sought to provide a synthesis of evidence- based instructional practices (EBIPs) particular to chemistry through meta-analysis. 99 studies were analyzed comprising a broader view of chemistry specific studies than past meta-analyses. The results showed that EBIPs feature a demonstrably positive impact on students’ academic performance in chemistry, although assessment topic …

Chemolithotrophic Denitrification Of Nitrate Contaminated Groundwater Using Sulfur-Bearing Minerals, John Sutton Oct 2019

Chemolithotrophic Denitrification Of Nitrate Contaminated Groundwater Using Sulfur-Bearing Minerals, John Sutton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nitrate contamination in groundwater resources poses a serious threat, not only to the health of those who would drink it, but also as a potential nutrient for eutrophication. Current methods of nitrate removal can efficiently remove nitrate below 10 mg/L as nitrogen, but may require resources unavailable to small community water systems (SCWS). Sulfur-oxidizing biological denitrification is a promising alternative that may be more suitable for SCWS. Sulfur-oxidizing denitrification has previously been shown to have a high nitrate removal efficiency; however, it produces water high in sulfate. Utilization of sulfide-bearing minerals, rather than elemental sulfur as an electron donor, may …

Life History Through The Eyes Of A Hogfish: Evidence Of Trophic Growth And Differential Juvenile Habitat Use, Meaghan E. Faletti Oct 2019

Life History Through The Eyes Of A Hogfish: Evidence Of Trophic Growth And Differential Juvenile Habitat Use, Meaghan E. Faletti

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding ontogenetic linkages among fish habitats is critical for conservation of fish populations and the ecosystems on which they rely. Natural tags such as stable isotopes are an effective tool commonly used to investigate ecological questions regarding fish movement and habitat use. Here, I analyzed stable isotopes from the sequentially deposited laminae of Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) eye lenses from the eastern Gulf of Mexico (eGOM) to investigate trophic and geographic changes across individual life histories. I documented evidence of entire-life scale trophic growth through increases in δ15N. I also observed depth separation at the juvenile stage, evidenced by variation in …

Evaluating The Effect Of Temperature On A Human Parasite And Its Intermediate Snail Host: Implications For A Changing Climate, Karena H. Nguyen Oct 2019

Evaluating The Effect Of Temperature On A Human Parasite And Its Intermediate Snail Host: Implications For A Changing Climate, Karena H. Nguyen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Global climate change is impacting the emergence, re-emergence, prevalence, and incidence of infectious diseases worldwide, including parasitic diseases of humans (Blum and Hotez 2018). Neglected tropical diseases, defined as a group of parasitic diseases affecting developing countries in the tropics (Hotez et al. 2007), are of particular concern because these diseases occur in areas that are also expected to experience rapid population growth and agricultural development in the coming decades. As human population and food demand increase, the greater the likelihood of humans encountering intermediate hosts that either inhabit agricultural areas or are impacted by agricultural development, which will influence …

Isis And Futurist Terrorism Versus Cyberpunk, Thorsten Botz-Bornstei Oct 2019

Isis And Futurist Terrorism Versus Cyberpunk, Thorsten Botz-Bornstei

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

The origin of science fiction is twentieth-century Futurism. For the largest part of the twentieth century, science fiction maintained an optimistic attitude towards the future. At the end of the 1970s, the modern, optimistic, and futurist vision of the future, typical for avant-garde movements of the 1930s, took a negative turn and became dark, pessimistic, and cynical, in a postmodern sense; it became what would be called, in a word, ‘cyberpunk.’ In this article, I want to show that the terrorist organization generally known as ISIS (Islamic State) intends, or rather intended, to go back to futurism and modernism by …

Dismantling Bodies: The War On Terror, And The Wound Aesthetic Of Csi: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015), Christopher J. Davies Oct 2019

Dismantling Bodies: The War On Terror, And The Wound Aesthetic Of Csi: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015), Christopher J. Davies

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This paper interrogates the aesthetic signature of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015). Utilizing a selection of representative episodes airing during George W. Bush’s first term, I analyze how CSI mobilizes a particular aesthetic of wounding in which wound sites, bodily and geographic, may be understood to serve as vulnerable apertures through which underlying threads of critical engagement with the direction of the 9/11 discourse may be aspirated from within the body of the text. Specifically, I approach the wound sites of CSI as sources of war-on-terror critique that serve political double-duty. On the one hand, CSI’s injury-centric narratives and …

Letters On The Aesthetic Deformation Of Man, Katya Mandoki Oct 2019

Letters On The Aesthetic Deformation Of Man, Katya Mandoki

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Friedrich Schiller wrote Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man hoping to elevate human potential through the arts for the development of free citizens of the Republic, and also in reaction to the decline of the French Revolution into a Reign of Terror. Nowadays, with the prominent role social networks have acquired in human relations, aesthetics is an invaluable tool for capturing attention in marketing and political propaganda, no less than in recruitment and indoctrination by terrorist organizations. Adopting a pragmatics approach, we will examine Schiller’s relevance today regarding uses and abuses of aesthetics related to terrorism, focusing on the …

Reflections On The Aesthetics Of Violence, Arnold Berleant Oct 2019

Reflections On The Aesthetics Of Violence, Arnold Berleant

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Violence has long been a factor in human life and has been widely depicted in the arts. This essay explores how the artistic and appreciative responses to violence have been practiced, understood, and valued. It emphasizes the difference between the aesthetics of distant, disinterested appreciation and the engaged appreciative experience of violence in the arts, and insists on the relevance of their behavioral and ethical implications.

Practical Planning For Successful Winter Grazing, Jim Gerrish Oct 2019

Practical Planning For Successful Winter Grazing, Jim Gerrish

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Most farmers and ranchers consider feeding hay to their stock to be a fairly simple task. You go to the bale yard, pick up some hay, drive out to the stock, and feed them some hay. Simple, but very expensive. Like almost everything else in life, convenience comes at a price. It is up to you to determine what the true cost of each alternative strategy might be and then decide if you’re willing and able to pay the price for the option you choose.

Winter grazing can be as simple and as convenient as feeding hay, but much less …

Applying Kentucky Dairy Forage Research For Beef Producers, S. Ray Smith Oct 2019

Applying Kentucky Dairy Forage Research For Beef Producers, S. Ray Smith

Kentucky Grazing Conference

In 2015 the University of Kentucky and the University of Tennessee was awarded a USDA-NIFA grant that we refer to as the Southeast Organic Dairy Project. The goal of this project was to develop science-based recommendations to efficiently manage forages, herd health, and overall farm productivity on organic dairies in the Southeastern US. There are only about 40 organic dairies in Kentucky, but the over 35,000 beef cattle operations in the state will also benefit from this research. We are learning the best forage combinations for Kentucky and Tennessee soils and growing conditions. We are learning how to maximize forage …

How Good Is Our Kentucky Haylage? A Summary Of 2017-18 Farm Results, Jimmy C. Henning Oct 2019

How Good Is Our Kentucky Haylage? A Summary Of 2017-18 Farm Results, Jimmy C. Henning

Kentucky Grazing Conference

The ability to harvest moist forage as hay gives Kentucky producers many advantages, including timely harvest, higher forage quality, and less weathering loss over hay systems. The baleage system allows producers to utilize commonly available forage equipment (mowers, rakes, balers) rather than requiring choppers and silo structures or bags. Making high quality baleage requires timely access to bale wrappers.

Hay Storage And Feeding: Avoiding Train Wrecks, Jeff Lehmkuhler Oct 2019

Hay Storage And Feeding: Avoiding Train Wrecks, Jeff Lehmkuhler

Kentucky Grazing Conference

When looking back at the Standardized Performance Analysis data collected from cow-calf operations, the data clearly illustrates that beyond the actual investment in the livestock, feed costs are the major expense in the cattle enterprise. In a report of 135 beef cow-calf operations with an average number of 80 cows/operation in the FINBIN data set, the cost of production was reported to be an average of $169.54/cwt or $847.70 for a 500 lb calf (Nordquist and Van Nurden, 2019). This includes all costs including land, labor, feed and so forth. The profit margin is narrow when all expenses are included …

Grazing Management 2020, Mark Harris

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Bill Gallagher Senior had the idea to use an electric shock to deter his horse Joe from rubbing on the families Essex car. After jury rigging a magneto to produce a shock, the experiment was successful enough for him to build a battery powered ticking fence unit for use on his pastoral dairy farm. Word got around and as a result Gallagher the animal management company was founded in 1938 in Hamilton New Zealand.

Selecting Cattle For Optimal Production In Pasture Settings, Gordon F. Jones Oct 2019

Selecting Cattle For Optimal Production In Pasture Settings, Gordon F. Jones

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Cattle are ruminants and capable of utilizing various forages to support body maintenance and production. However, the major question that needs to be answered “is it possible to select animals that allow for optimal production per acre of land without supplying purchased feedstuffs to supplement the pasture that is provided?” As I have pondered over this issue for many years, it has become quite clear that “environmental and forage adaptability trumps every other criterion that may be used in selection”. This does NOT mean that quantitative genetic values are not available to aid in the selection process, but it is …

Why You Should Be Out Of The Hay Business, Jim Gerrish Oct 2019

Why You Should Be Out Of The Hay Business, Jim Gerrish

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Winter feeding costs are typically the single greatest line-item cost in most cow-calf budgets. The irony of this is it doesn’t seem to matter whether you live in Minnesota, Missouri, or Mississippi, winter feed costs are still the highest cost. If you want to improve profitability in any resource-based production business, your first best strategy is to tackle your biggest cost items. The best way to manage a cost is to eliminate it. Shaving a little here and there does not make a big impact. Think elimination, not reduction.

Social Determinants Of Hiv Treatment Engagement Among Postpartum Black Women Living With Hiv (Wlwh), Emmanuela Nneamaka Ojukwu Oct 2019

Social Determinants Of Hiv Treatment Engagement Among Postpartum Black Women Living With Hiv (Wlwh), Emmanuela Nneamaka Ojukwu

Open Access Dissertations

Engagement in postpartum Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment is critical to decreasing maternal morbidity and mortality, and poor infant health outcomes. HIV-related maternal morbidity is one of the leading causes of death among women of reproductive age, with as many as 8,500 HIV-infected women giving birth annually in the US. The risk of HIV-related maternal morbidity is greater for Black women who are disproportionately affected by the disease with an infection rate of 59% compared to 20% for Whites, and 21% for other minorities. Black women also have the highest rates of unintended pregnancies, HIV-related mortality, and being lost to …

Knick V. Township Of Scott, Alizabeth A. Bronsdon

Public Land & Resources Law Review

The Supreme Court overruled a 34-year-old precedent and sparked a sharp dissent by holding that a landowner impacted by a local ordinance requiring public access to an unofficial cemetery on her property could bring a takings claim directly in federal court. The decision eliminated a Catch-22 state-litigation requirement that effectively barred local takings plaintiffs from federal court, but raised concerns about government land use and regulation, judicial federalism, and the role of stare decisis.
