Expect The Unexpected: A New Ant From A Backyard In Utah, John T. Longino, Douglas B. Booher Oct 2019

Expect The Unexpected: A New Ant From A Backyard In Utah, John T. Longino, Douglas B. Booher

Western North American Naturalist

Urban centers are not where one expects to find new species. Yet, we report here a newly recognized ant, Strumigenys ananeotes sp. nov., in an urban yard in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA. The genus Strumigenys is a major radiation of litter ants that are found primarily in the wet tropics and subtropics. They are extremely rare in western North America, known only from sites hundreds of kilometers south and west of Salt Lake City. The new species is related to species from southern Arizona and is presumed native. We propose that it is normally restricted to …

Deep Neural Network Based Iterative Self-Taught Learning On Text Mining, Xiangwen Liu

Theses and Dissertations

[Motivation] Machine learning and deep learning models is the main methodology for discovering hidden knowledge of data. Data plays a significant role in the training process. However, lack of data especially labeled data is precious due to accessibility and high cost. How to use the abundant unlabeled data to enhance the downstream learning process on labeled data is an urgent task in machine learning and pattern recognition. [Methods] An STL (Self-taught learning) model is proposed in this dissertation, which can successfully learn features from downloaded unlabeled text and enhance the downstream tasks on labeled text. In addition, DLI-IT (Drug labeling …

Diverse Cell Junctions With Unique Molecular Composition In Tissues Of A Sponge (Porifera), Jennyfer M. Mitchell, Scott A. Nichols Oct 2019

Diverse Cell Junctions With Unique Molecular Composition In Tissues Of A Sponge (Porifera), Jennyfer M. Mitchell, Scott A. Nichols

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The integrity and organization of animal tissues depend upon specialized protein complexes that mediate adhesion between cells with each other (cadherin-based adherens junctions), and with the extracellular matrix (integrin-based focal adhesions). Reconstructing how and when these cell junctions evolved is central to understanding early tissue evolution in animals. We examined focal adhesion protein homologs in tissues of the freshwater sponge, Ephydatia muelleri (phylum Porifera; class Demospongiae). Our principal findings are that (1) sponge focal adhesion homologs (integrin, talin, focal adhesion kinase, etc.) co-precipitate as a complex, separate from adherens junction proteins; (2) that actin-based structures resembling focal adhesions form at …

Magnetosome Gene Duplication As An Important Driver In The Evolution Of Magnetotaxis In The Alphaproteobacteria, Haijian Du, Wenyan Zhang, Wensi Zhang, Weijia Zhang, Hongmiao Pan, Yongxin Pan, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Long-Fei Wu, Tian Xiao, Wei Lin

Life Sciences Faculty Research

The evolution of microbial magnetoreception (or magnetotaxis) is of great interest in the fields of microbiology, evolutionary biology, biophysics, geomicrobiology, and geochemistry. Current genomic data from magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), the only prokaryotes known to be capable of sensing the Earth’s geomagnetic field, suggests an ancient origin of magnetotaxis in the domain Bacteria. Vertical inheritance, followed by multiple independent magnetosome gene cluster loss, is considered to be one of the major forces that drove the evolution of magnetotaxis at or above the class or phylum level, although the evolutionary trajectories at lower taxonomic ranks (e.g., within the class level) remain largely …

Dysregulation Of Mitochondrial Ca2+ Uptake And Sarcolemma Repair Underlie Muscle Weakness And Wasting In Patients And Mice Lacking Micu1, Valentina Debattisti, Adam Horn, Raghavendra Singh, Erin L. Seifert, Marshall W. Hogarth, Davi A. Mazala, Kai Ting Huang, Rita Horvath, Jyoti K. Jaiswal, György Hajnóczky

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Muscle function is regulated by Ca2+, which mediates excitation-contraction coupling, energy metabolism, adaptation to exercise, and sarcolemmal repair. Several of these actions rely on Ca2+ delivery to the mitochondrial matrix via the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter, the pore of which is formed by mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU). MCU's gatekeeping and cooperative activation are controlled by MICU1. Loss-of-protein mutation in MICU1 causes a neuromuscular disease. To determine the mechanisms underlying the muscle impairments, we used MICU1 patient cells and skeletal muscle-specific MICU1 knockout mice. Both these models show a lower threshold for MCU-mediated Ca2+ uptake. Lack of …

Sundaas Story: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Household Sanitation Provisioning In Urban Informal Housing In India, Sarita Vijay Panchang Oct 2019

Sundaas Story: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Household Sanitation Provisioning In Urban Informal Housing In India, Sarita Vijay Panchang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The aims of this research were to examine sanitation insecurity in urban informal housing through the lens of the built environment, social disparities, and health implications. While the Millennium Development Goals for halving the global proportion of people without access to safe drinking water were met ahead of schedule, progress fell short for sanitation, creating new objectives for the Sustainable Development Goals to be met in 2030. Much research in the Global South is dedicated to community-level sanitation promotion, but often presumes a rural rather than urban setting. Urban informal housing settings constitute a unique challenge due to the range …

A history of allergies doubles the risk of vulvodynia-a chronic pain condition of unknown etiology often accompanied by increases in numbers of vulvar mast cells. We previously established the biological plausibility of this relationship in mouse models where repeated exposures to the allergens oxazolone or dinitrofluorobenzene on the labiar skin or inside the vaginal canal of ND4 Swiss Webster outbred mice led to persistent tactile sensitivity and local increases in mast cells. In these models, depletion of mast cells alleviated pain. While exposure to cleaning chemicals has been connected to elevated vulvodynia risk, no single agent has been linked to …

Illuminating The Process Of Youth Development: The Mediating Effect Of Thriving On Youth Development Program Outcomes, Mary E. Arnold, Ryan J. Gagnon Oct 2019

Illuminating The Process Of Youth Development: The Mediating Effect Of Thriving On Youth Development Program Outcomes, Mary E. Arnold, Ryan J. Gagnon

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

This paper examines the relationship between the developmental contexts of youth programs and resultant developmental outcomes, and explores whether the developmental process of thriving mediates this relationship. Developmental context is proposed to consist of three elements: (1) youth sparks, (2) program quality, and (3) developmental relationships. Combined, these elements describe youth program context more precisely than in previous studies, allowing for a clearer understanding of effective program settings. Likewise, the process of youth thriving provides insight into the mechanism through which youth development occurs. Sufficient model fit, convergent validity, and discriminant validity of the 4-H Thriving scale were determined through …

United States National Park Service: Publications

Abstract Nonnative feral pigs (Sus scrofa) are recognized throughout the New World as a highly significant introduced species in terms of ecosystem alteration. Similarly, nonnative soil macroinvertebrates (e.g. earthworms, ground beetles) invade and alter the structure and function of native habitats globally. However, the relationship between feral pigs and soil macroinvertebrates remains largely unknown. This study analyzed relationships between these taxa using nine sites located inside and outside of feral pig management units representing a * 25 year chronosequence of removal in tropical montane wet forests in Hawai‘i. Soil macroinvertebrates were sampled from plots categorized as: actively trampled by feral …
