The Lives Of Things On Pulau Ujir; Aru’S Engagement With Commercial Expansion, Joss R. Whittaker
The Lives Of Things On Pulau Ujir; Aru’S Engagement With Commercial Expansion, Joss R. Whittaker
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In places with limited access to manufactured goods, people must develop creative strategies to make the most of available materials, both those produced by humans and those taken from the natural world. Although Pulau Ujir, in the Aru Islands, has a long history of engagement with global trade networks, until recently the community’s access to manufactured goods was limited and infrequent. As a result, in the past objects there tended to take on new lives, and still do today: they are modified, re-purposed, and recycled in ingenious ways. This article explores the relationship between people and things in Ujir from …

Rasp 4: Ancestral State Reconstruction Tool For Multiple Genes And Characters, Yan Yu, Christopher Blair, Xingjin He
Publications and Research
With the continual progress of sequencing techniques, genome-scale data are increasingly used in phylogenetic studies. With more data from throughout the genome, the relationship between genes and different kinds of characters is receiving more attention. Here, we present version 4 of RASP, a software to reconstruct ancestral states through phylogenetic trees. RASP can apply generalized statistical ancestral reconstruction methods to phylogenies, explore the phylogenetic signal of characters to particular trees, calculate distances between trees, and cluster trees into groups. RASP 4 has an improved graphic user interface and is freely available from http://mnh.scu.edu.cn/soft/blog/RASP (program) and https://github.com/sculab/RASP (source code).

Transforming Tradition In The Dance Drama Realizing Rama, 1997–2004: Documenting The Process Of “Inter-Creation” In An Asean Production, Nicanor G. Tiongson
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This article seeks to illumine two aspects of the pioneering production Realizing Rama (1997-2004), a collaboration among artists from the ASEAN. First, it will describe and critique the process of inter-creation among traditional and modern artists that gave birth to a production style that was palpably Southeast Asian in tonality, movement, and visuality without being stereotyped as “ethnic.” Second, it will explicate and evaluate the participation of ASEAN artists in the production and the changes they underwent in the process of creating and performing the work. This study will show that the creation of Realizing Rama paralleled the initial realization …

Human Foraging Responses To Climate Change; Here Sorot Entapa Rockshelter On Kisar Island, Hendri A. F. Kaharudin, Mahirta Mahirta, Shimona Kealy, Stuart Hawkins, Clara Boulanger, Sue O’Connor
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This study explores prehistoric human subsistence adaptations within the context of changing marine and terrestrial environments on the tiny Island of Kisar, beginning during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition around 15,000 years ago (ka). We use zooarchaeological data on faunal remains (vertebrates and invertebrates) recovered from Here Sorot Entapa rockshelter (HSE) in temporal relationship to climate data from Flores to document prehistoric human responses to regional sea-level, temperature, and associated habitat changes that occurred after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Human settlement intensity peaked during the colder drier conditions of the Bølling-Allerød period at 14.4-13 ka, and the site was abandoned during …

Sound is one of the types of waves that can be felt by the sense of hearing (ears). In physics, the definition of sound is something that is produced from objects that vibrate. Objects that produce sound are called sound sources. The sound source that vibrates will vibrate the molecules into the air around it. Sound is mechanical compression or longitudinal waves that propagate through the medium. This medium or intermediate agent can be liquid, solid, gas. So, sound waves can propagate for example in water, coal, or air. Most sounds are a combination of various vibratory signals composed of …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Intensive efforts are being made to eliminate the raccoon variant of rabies virus (RABV) from the eastern United States and Canada. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Services National Rabies Management Program has implemented enhanced rabies surveillance (ERS) to improve case detection across the extent of the raccoon oral rabies vaccination (ORV) management area. We evaluated ERS and public health surveillance data from 2006 to 2017 in three northeastern USA states using a dynamic occupancy modeling approach. Our objectives were to examine potential risk corridors for RABV incursion from the U.S. into Canada, evaluate the effectiveness of ORV …

Excerpt: The experience of navigating deeply held cultural values in the process of composing a new piece was transformative. I realized not only that working with traditional musicians was a culturally sensitive process but that, in order to achieve true “confluence,” I must develop my own knowledge of their living tradition and cultural heritage. I also learned the value of developing strong relationships with the musicians. With their trust, I might inspire them to reach outside of their comfort zones to attempt something new and innovative. After establishing such mutual respect, I believe that the composer and performers can simultaneously …

Ginggala: The Tai Yai’S Divine Gift Through Music And Dance, Maria Christine Muyco, Khanithep Pitupumnak
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
In this article, the authors look at the present-day Tai Yai who live within the city of Chiang Mai but whose roots could be traced back to the Mae Hong Son Province. They practice a music and dance form called the ginggala inside the compound of the wat (temple), and in the streets during the end of the Buddhist Lent. By looking at each element of the ginggala—the people involved, the instruments used, the costumes, religious ceremonies, and parades of present-day street performances—the article traces the ginggala back to a mythic creature, half-bird and half-human, who welcomed Buddha in the …

A Survey Of Theater In Metro Manila: Selected Productions, January–December 2018, Arturo Hilado
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Excerpt: Theatre continued to flourish in Metro Manila over 2018. What is remarkable in the scene this past year is the prominence of outstanding full-length productions of original Filipino material. These have of course been in evidence in previous years as well, but seldom have they so dominated the roster of quality stage output. Just as notable was that the output went beyond the traditional purveyors of Pilipino-language theatre, such as PETA and CCP’s Tanghalang Pilipino. Eye-opening was the number of theatre companies almost totally dedicated to putting on English-language works, which broke mold to stage ambitious high-quality Filipino works …

Dialogue Between Islam And Environtmental Ethics Through The Seyyed Hossein Nasr Thought, Aulia Rahman Nugraha, Naupal Asnawi
International Review of Humanities Studies
Islam is often regarded as a religion that teaches anthropocentrism through the concept of the caliph in which humans occupy a central position on earth. However, the concept of the caliph itself is a complex concept where the special status of humans always implies a moral obligation. Through alternative explanatory methods and critical reflection, the authors try to clarify the concept of the caliph and show the teachings of Islam that are environmentally friendly through the thought of Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Philosophy and environmental ethics of Nasr have two major projects, namely the resacralization of nature and the clarification of …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: Exosomes transfer regulatory microRNAs (miRs) from donor cells to recipient cells. Exosomes and miRs originate from both endogenous synthesis and dietary sources such as milk. miR-200a-3p is a negative regulator of the proinflammatory chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 9 (CXCL9). Male Mdr1a−/− mice spontaneously develop clinical signs of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Objectives: We assessed whether dietary depletion of exosomes and miRs alters the severity of IBD in Mdr1a−/− mice owing to aberrant regulation of proinflammatory cytokines.
Methods: Starting at 5 wk of age, 16 male Mdr1a−/− mice were fed either milk exosome– and RNA-sufficient (ERS) or milk exosome– and …

Adaptations Of Ovid’S Metamorphoses In Late Medieval France: Material And Moral Recontextualization In The Tapestry Of Narcissus At The Fountain, Morgan J. Macey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As a result of Ovid’s prominence in Northern Europe from the twelfth through the sixteenth centuries, French adaptations of and commentaries on the Metamorphoses from the late medieval period abound. Here, I address the physical and moral transformation of the Narcissus myth in the tapestry of Narcissus at the Fountain. Specifically, I explore how the tapestry’s presentation of the youth transforms Ovid’s verse in a tantalizing yet moralizing image. To aid in this endeavour, I survey the intermediate sources which inspired said transformation. I argue the lavish clothing, lush garden, ornate fountain, and solemn reflection featured in the tapestry …

The Effects Of Social Media Advertising On Social Search In China: Evidence From Luxury Brand, Xing Gao, Sang Yong Kim, Da Yeon Kim, Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
This study examines the relationship between social media advertisement and customer interest in the context of luxury brands. Further, this study investigates the effective ways to utilize visual types (pictorial advertisement and video advertisement) and contents types (website link and hash-tag) in social media advertising by proposing a time-series model to estimate the long-term effect of social media advertising on social search. We find that the pictorial advertisements are more effective than video advertisements, which provides a different result from previous existing research. In addition, advertisements using hashtags are more effective than web links due to efficiency of the search …
