Faculty Research 2019

Neuropathic pain (NeuP) arises due to injury of the somatosensory nervous system and is both common and disabling, rendering an urgent need for non-addictive, effective new therapies. Given the high evolutionary conservation of pain, investigative approaches from Drosophila mutagenesis to human Mendelian genetics have aided our understanding of the maladaptive plasticity underlying NeuP. Successes include the identification of ion channel variants causing hyper-excitability and the importance of neuro-immune signaling. Recent developments encompass improved sensory phenotyping in animal models and patients, brain imaging, and electrophysiology-based pain biomarkers, the collection of large well-phenotyped population cohorts, neurons derived from patient stem cells, and …

An Updated Review Of Atmospheric Mercury, Seth N. Lyman, Irene Cheng, Lynne E. Gratz, Peter Weiss-Penzias, Leiming Zhang

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The atmosphere is a key component of the biogeochemical cycle of mercury, acting as a reservoir, transport mechanism, and facilitator of chemical reactions. The chemical and physical behavior of atmospheric mercury determines how, when, and where emitted mercury pollution impacts ecosystems. In this review, we provide current information about what is known and what remains uncertain regarding mercury in the atmosphere. We discuss new ambient, laboratory, and theoretical information about the chemistry of mercury in various atmospheric media. We review what is known about mercury in and on solid- and liquid-phase aerosols. We present recent findings related to wet and …

Exploring The World Around You: A Guide To Learning About The Natural World, Jordyn Kuemerle

Honors Projects

This paper discusses the research, methodology, and purpose of my Honors Project. My project is a workbook for children to complete with their parents or guardians all about exploring nature. Language and literacy development is the overall focus of my workbook, but children who complete it also learn about shapes, colors, and comparing sizes in nature. The original inspiration for this workbook came from reading Molly Bang’s 2016 book, Picture This: How Pictures Work, and I originally wanted to make a children’s book in nature. After further research I found out that many educators and education professionals agree that children …

The Punch-Drunk Boxer And The Battered Wife: Gender And Brain Injury Research., Stephen T Casper, Kelly O'Donnell Nov 2019

The Punch-Drunk Boxer And The Battered Wife: Gender And Brain Injury Research., Stephen T Casper, Kelly O'Donnell

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

This essay uses gender as a category of historical and sociological analysis to situate two populations-boxers and victims of domestic violence-in context and explain the temporal and ontological discrepancies between them as potential brain injury patients. In boxing, the question of brain injury and its sequelae were analyzed from 1928 on, often on profoundly somatic grounds. With domestic violence, in contrast, the question of brain injury and its sequelae appear to have been first examined only after 1990. Symptoms prior to that period were often cast as functional in specific psychiatric and psychological nomenclatures. We examine this chronological and epistemological …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The non-genomic mechanisms by which glucocorticoids modulate β2 agonist-induced-bronchodilation remain elusive. Our studies aimed to elucidate mechanisms mediating the beneficial effects of glucocorticoids on agonist-induced bronchodilation. Utilizing human precision cut lung slices (hPCLS), we measured bronchodilation to formoterol, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), cholera toxin (CTX) or forskolin in the presence and absence of budesonide. Using cultured human airway smooth muscle (HASM), intracellular cAMP was measured in live cells following exposure to formoterol, PGE2, or forskolin in the presence or absence of budesonide. We showed that simultaneous budesonide administration amplified formoterol-induced bronchodilation and attenuated agonist-induced phosphorylation …

Peritumoral Administration Of Dribbles-Pulsed Antigen-Presenting Cells Enhances The Antitumor Efficacy Of Anti-Gitr And Anti-Pd-1 Antibodies Via An Antigen Presenting Independent Mechanism., Jaina M Patel, Zhihua Cui, Zhi-Fa Wen, Catherine T Dinh, Hong-Ming Hu Nov 2019

Peritumoral Administration Of Dribbles-Pulsed Antigen-Presenting Cells Enhances The Antitumor Efficacy Of Anti-Gitr And Anti-Pd-1 Antibodies Via An Antigen Presenting Independent Mechanism., Jaina M Patel, Zhihua Cui, Zhi-Fa Wen, Catherine T Dinh, Hong-Ming Hu

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: TNF receptor family agonists and checkpoint blockade combination therapies lead to minimal tumor clearance of poorly immunogenic tumors. Therefore, a need to enhance the efficacy of this combination therapy arises. Antigen-presenting cells (APCs) present antigen to T cells and steer the immune response through chemokine and cytokine secretion. DRibbles (DR) are tumor-derived autophagosomes containing tumor antigens and innate inflammatory adjuvants.

METHODS: Using preclinical murine lung and pancreatic cancer models, we assessed the triple combination therapy of GITR agonist and PD-1 blocking antibodies with peritumoral injections of DRibbles-pulsed-bone marrow cells (BMCs), which consisted mainly of APCs, or CD103+ cross-presenting dendritic …

The Impact Of Edwards V. Aguillard On Science Education In Louisiana Public Schools, Abigail Mcdonough Nov 2019

The Impact Of Edwards V. Aguillard On Science Education In Louisiana Public Schools, Abigail Mcdonough

Senior Honors Theses

The landmark Louisiana case Edwards v. Aguillard ushered in a new era of legislation in which certain ideas are discriminated against because of their religious basis. Due to the Court’s misinterpretation of evidence and employment of a faulty test for a secular purpose, the Court is responsible for disastrous and far-reaching implications. This thesis will examine how the 1987 Supreme Court case Aguillard shifted American science education away from the exploration of multiple competing theories of man’s origins in the classroom. Although America was founded on principles such as freedom of religion and thought which should be protected, the Aguillard …

emperatures (SST), salinity, carbonate chemistry, and acidity. Over the last half-century, some reef communities have been disappearing at an alarming pace. This study focuses on the Gulf of Mexico, where the majority of shallow coral reefs are reported to be in poor or fair condition. We analyze the RCP8.5 ensemble of the Community Earth System Model v1.2 to identify monthly-to-decadal trends in Gulf of Mexico SST. Secondly, we examine projected changes in ocean pH, carbonate saturation state, and salinity in the same coupled model simulations. We find that the joint impacts of predicted higher temperatures and changes in ocean acidification …

Seasonal Plasticity In GabaA Signaling Is Necessary For Restoring Phase Synchrony In The Master Circadian Clock Network, Kayla Rohr, Harshida Pancholi, Shabi Haider, Christopher Karow, David Modert, Nicholas J. Raddatz, Jennifer A. Evans Nov 2019

Seasonal Plasticity In GabaA Signaling Is Necessary For Restoring Phase Synchrony In The Master Circadian Clock Network, Kayla Rohr, Harshida Pancholi, Shabi Haider, Christopher Karow, David Modert, Nicholas J. Raddatz, Jennifer A. Evans

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Annual changes in the environment threaten survival, and numerous biological processes in mammals adjust to this challenge via seasonal encoding by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). To tune behavior according to day length, SCN neurons display unified rhythms with synchronous phasing when days are short, but will divide into two sub-clusters when days are long. The transition between SCN states is critical for maintaining behavioral responses to seasonal change, but the mechanisms regulating this form of neuroplasticity remain unclear. Here we identify that a switch in chloride transport and GABAA signaling is critical for maintaining state plasticity in the SCN …

Molecular Survey Of Helminths Infecting Ground Dwelling Birds In The Grouse Subfamily Tetraoninae, Briana M. Sesmundo Nov 2019

Molecular Survey Of Helminths Infecting Ground Dwelling Birds In The Grouse Subfamily Tetraoninae, Briana M. Sesmundo

Honors College Theses

Alaskan grouse and ptarmigan (Galliformes) are important avian game species in Alaska. Interestingly, gallids harbor a fairly diverse helminth fauna, particularly cestodes, which may make birds with high parasite loads more susceptible to predation. Unfortunately, there is limited information available on the helminth fauna of Alaskan gallids, and no molecular surveys. The present study aims to develop baseline data on diversity of intestinal and subcutaneous (filariid) helminth infections in galliforms using morphological and molecular (DNA) approaches. These data can then be used to better understand changes in helminth community structure given current environmental volatility. The intestines, cloaca, liver and kidneys …

Humpback Whale Movements And Behavior In Response To Whale-Watching Vessels In Juneau, Ak, Alicia Schuler, Sarah Piwetz, Jacopo Di Clemente, David Steckler, Franz Mueter, Heidi C. Pearson

Faculty, Staff, and Students

The whale-watching industry in Juneau, Alaska relies primarily on the presence of North Pacific humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). To meet demands from the rapidly growing tourism industry, the number of whale-watching vessels in this region has tripled over the last 18 years. As a result, increased vessel presence could have negative effects on humpback whales, ranging from short-term behavioral disturbance to long-term impacts. The current humpback whale viewing regulations are outdated and may not be as effective as they were 18 years ago, when both the whale-watching industry and humpback whale population were smaller. The present study assessed how humpback …

Let History Repeat Itself: Solving Originalism's History Problem In Interpreting The Establishment Clause, Neil Joseph Nov 2019

Let History Repeat Itself: Solving Originalism's History Problem In Interpreting The Establishment Clause, Neil Joseph

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

The Supreme Court's Establishment Clause jurisprudence is all over the place. The current justices have widely divergent views on the Establishment Clause's meaning, and the Lemon test has been widely panned by several justices. Originalist judges, however, have had a fairly consistent approach to interpreting the Establishment Clause. This largely stems from their reliance on history. This Note argues that their use of history in analyzing the Establishment Clause is flawed. Originalist Establishment Clause jurisprudence has been and is criticized for being unprincipled. And those criticisms are correct. Originalists encounter such criticism because the justices struggle to reconcile historical practice …

Territorial Landscapes: Incorporating Density-Dependence Into Wolf Habitat Selection Studies., Shawn T O'Neil, Dean E Beyer, Joseph K Bump

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Habitat selection is a process that spans space, time and individual life histories. Ecological analyses of animal distributions and preferences are most accurate when they account for inherent dynamics of the habitat selection process. Strong territoriality can constrain perception of habitat availability by individual animals or groups attempting to colonize or establish new territory. Because habitat selection is a function of habitat availability, broad-scale changes in habitat availability or occupancy can drive density-dependent habitat functional responses. We investigated density-dependent habitat selection over a 19-year period of grey wolf (

Doctrinal Evolution And The Right Against Self-Incrimination, Eliot T. Tracz Nov 2019

Doctrinal Evolution And The Right Against Self-Incrimination, Eliot T. Tracz

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

The Fifth Amendment’s right against self-incrimination is one of the most well-known constitutional protections as it is often referenced in movies, television shows, and in the news. Despite this wide-spread awareness of the right against self-incrimination, the Federal Circuit Courts remain split over whether the right attaches before or during trial. The specific point of contention is when a “criminal case” commences.

This article examines the history of the right against self-incrimination beginning with its common-law origins in Great Britain. The evolution of the right against self-incrimination is explored up to the present-day circuit split, and the cases involved in …

First In Elections, First In Reforms: Can New Hampshire Be First In The Nation To Implement Changes To Campaign Finance?, Lisa M. Bianco

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

As Americans prepare for the 2020 presidential election, one thing is for certain—the candidates will make their way into your home. While they might not physically step foot into your living room, they will appear on your television, on your laptop, and on your phone. Why? Because in the United States, campaigns are won by candidates communicating with you, the voters. It is not feasible to physically shake hands with the entire population of the country. Instead, individuals running for office have to introduce themselves to voters some other way. Television advertisements, sponsored posts on social media, and robocalls are …

Prevention And Protection Interventions For Stateless Non-Refugee And Force Displaced Children, Tanya Herring Nov 2019

Prevention And Protection Interventions For Stateless Non-Refugee And Force Displaced Children, Tanya Herring

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article advances a general theory of law and justice that would expand the Palermo Trafficking and Smuggling Protocols to a wider application in human rights jurisprudence. The aim of the research reported here is to close the gaps in member-state policy and scholarship that addresses prevention measures and protection mechanisms for forcibly displaced children seeking self-determination in states that have not ratified the UN Convention on Refugees and the UN Conventions on Statelessness. The research is based on the premise that a stateless nonrefugee status constructs an extremely vulnerable state for children during forced migration and when they are …

Semantic Value-Driven 3d Upright Posture Figure Model Transformation, Yangfu Ren, Yuanyuan Pu, Xu Dan, Wenhua Qian Nov 2019

Semantic Value-Driven 3d Upright Posture Figure Model Transformation, Yangfu Ren, Yuanyuan Pu, Xu Dan, Wenhua Qian

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In medical equipment, clothing design, film production and computer games, 3D human body model is an indispensable element, but directly obtaining it by means of scanning the human body model does not directly apply in many environments, so we need to moderate deformation model according to the environment. The operation difficulty of the model of deformation is considered, and the deformation effect is achieved. For studying the 3D human body model deformation problem, the deformation of semantic driven model is introduced. Semantic values of height, leg length and shoulder height were obtained by measuring the position of joint points …

3d Mesh Editing Method For Virtual Double Eyelid Surgery, Guan Tong, Juntao Ye, Guanghui Ma, Xiaopeng Zhang Nov 2019

3d Mesh Editing Method For Virtual Double Eyelid Surgery, Guan Tong, Juntao Ye, Guanghui Ma, Xiaopeng Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A virtual cosmetic surgery system involves lots of human-computer interactions, and the achieved effects rely on the skills of the operator. Virtual double-fold eyelid surgery is a function that is either missing or implemented with less accuracy in commercial software. To solve these problems, we propose an algorithm that can automatically generate virtual double-fold eyelid path taking advantage of geodesic line. In terms of algorithms, this method adopts a self-adaptive subdivision strategy to avoid losing shapes of the deformation outcomes. Results of experiments show stability, high efficiency and usability of our method.

The Right To Self-Determination: Philosophical And Legal Perspectives, Michael Freeman Nov 2019

The Right To Self-Determination: Philosophical And Legal Perspectives, Michael Freeman

New England Journal of Public Policy

Why do we need to rethink self-determination? In this article I argue that self-determination is a necessary feature of the human condition and a human right but that it is in part illusory and is potentially dangerous. We need to rethink self-determination because our collective thinking has been very confused, and bad thinking about self-determination costs many lives.

The Right Of Peoples To Self-Determination In Article 1 Of The Human Rights Covenants As A Claimable Right, James Summers Nov 2019

The Right Of Peoples To Self-Determination In Article 1 Of The Human Rights Covenants As A Claimable Right, James Summers

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article looks at the potential for individual communications under common article 1 of the Human Rights Covenants, in particular, under the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. It first outlines the problems posed by the drafting of common article 1, in particular, the identity of peoples. It then considers how individuals might be able to claim peoples’ rights through representation and the collectivization of individual rights.
