Oedipus And The Stars, Kurt Fosso
Oedipus And The Stars, Kurt Fosso
New England Classical Journal
At OT 795 Oedipus’ recollection of measuring his fugitive course by the stars presents a double crux, concerning both the textual tradition’s dueling terms for that measurement and scholars’ related, opposed renderings of the phrase as literal or figurative. I argue Oedipus’ words can be taken literally to signify the techne of ancient celestial navigation, a metric of human knowhow versus the forces of fate and the divine.
A Most Amazing Conversation: The Social Contexts Of Wonder-Telling And The Development Of Paradoxography, Robin Greene
A Most Amazing Conversation: The Social Contexts Of Wonder-Telling And The Development Of Paradoxography, Robin Greene
New England Classical Journal
Wonder-telling thrived as an abiding element in Greek and Roman convivial gatherings. The burgeoning book culture of the Hellenistic period witnessed the emergence of paradoxographical works—compilations of reports on “marvels”—that offered another medium through which to experience wonder. This study surveys evidence that situates wonder-telling in the social sphere and suggests that the new genre adapted one of the joys of sympotic discourse in order to delight the solitary reader.

Stress Reduction After Visiting Cats In A Cat Café, Nicole L. Beasley
Stress Reduction After Visiting Cats In A Cat Café, Nicole L. Beasley
Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium
Research has attempted to induce stress and has been unsuccessful at demonstrating the efficacy of stress reduction. This may indicate that animal interaction is more beneficial when reducing longer-term stress rather than short-term stress, like what has been studied in the past. Additionally, animals may be more effective at reducing life stress as opposed to artificially produced stress.
Past research has limited the time participants may spend interacting with the study animals. The current study will allow participants to spend as much time as necessary with the café cats.
The present study will record a physiological marker of stress and …

Behavioral Analyses Of Zalophus Californianus And Eumetopias Jubatus At Bonneville Dam As Tools To Understand Salmonid Take And Inform Regulation Changes, Coral A. Bailey
University Honors Theses
Both Zalophus californianus and Eumetopias jubatus are species known to travel upriver into the Columbia River, reaching as far as the Bonneville Lock and Dam. Bonneville Dam works with federal agencies to hatch and protect salmonids within the Columbia River. Pinnipeds at the dam have been studied since the 1980's in an effort to understand their behaviors and feeding patterns on endangered salmon species. Since 2006, the hazing of Z. californianus and E. jubatus has gone on, showing little effectiveness in lowering the sea lion's consumption rates (ranging from 0.4-5.8% annually). Behavioral analyses conducted during the spring salmon run of …

Hydrocortisone Improves Oxygenation Index And Systolic Blood Pressure In Term Infants With Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension., Mahdi Alsaleem, Aysha Malik, Satyan Lakshminrusimha, Vasantha Hs Kumar
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is an essential cause for hypoxic respiratory failure with significant morbidity and mortality in term and near-term neonates. Hydrocortisone has been shown to decrease oxygen dependency and pulmonary hypertension in neonates with meconium aspiration syndrome and animal studies, respectively. We hypothesize that hydrocortisone will improve oxygenation in term and near-term infants with pulmonary hypertension. We performed a retrospective chart review of all infant with PPHN who received intravenous hydrocortisone therapy as a rescue for severe PPHN. Clinical response was objectively measured using, oxygenation index (OI), PaO2/FiO2 ratio, and inotrope score before, during, and …

Philosophical Vagabonds: Pedestrianism, Politics, And Improvement On The Scottish Tour, Nigel Leask
Studies in Scottish Literature
Discusses John Bristed's "facetious, digressive" memoir, Anthroplanomenos (1803), about a walking tour through the Highlands of lScotland in 1801 by two young students "disguised as American sailors, with little money and no identity papers,” describing their adventures and misadventures as they encountered suspicion, hostility and sometimes surprising kindness; brings out the two travellers’ often-self-contradictory responses to what they saw and experienced; and shows how the tour contributed to their changing political perspective, mirroring the turn away from 1790s radicalism in better-known writers in the same years. An edited version of the 2017 Marilyn Butler Lecture, for the British Association for …

Monkey Mind: Everyday Observations Of Mental Illness, Mikhayla Dunaj
Monkey Mind: Everyday Observations Of Mental Illness, Mikhayla Dunaj
Honors Theses
When I first was able to identify that I dealt with anxiety, I was 18 years old. At the time, I didn’t know how to explain it, and assumed it was only because I was in an unhealthy relationship, after already having been in an abusive one. At the end of my third year at Western Michigan University, I suffered a mental breakdown and started counseling.
The process of counseling was difficult, because as I opened up more, I realized that I had spent a majority of my life stuffing down things that were actually anxiety symptoms, assuming that it …

Variation In Host Home Range Size Decreases Rabies Vaccination Effectiveness By Increasing The Spatial Spread Of Rabies Virus, Katherine M. Mcclure, Amy T. Gilbert, Richard B. Chipman, Erin E. Rees, Kim M. Pepin
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
- Animal movement influences the spatial spread of directly transmitted wildlife disease through host-host contact structure. Wildlife disease hosts vary in home range- associated foraging and social behaviours, which may increase the spread and intensity of disease outbreaks. The consequences of variation in host home range movement and space use on wildlife disease dynamics are poorly understood, but could help to predict disease spread and determine more effective disease management strategies.
- We developed a spatially explicit individual-based model to examine the effect of spatiotemporal variation in host home range size on the spatial spread rate, persistence and incidence of rabies virus …
The Death Of Physical Media: The Dangers Of Streaming And The End Of The Home Library, Amelia Eichler
The Death Of Physical Media: The Dangers Of Streaming And The End Of The Home Library, Amelia Eichler
University Honors Theses
This thesis aims to provide an extensive look at the history of collecting film within the home, starting from pre-cinematic optical toys to today's use of streaming platforms. There is an extensive knowledge gap in the history of film collecting. Much of the information is anecdotal and providing an extensive background will close this gap. Contrasting the different technologies in the home allows for people to see how film collecting practices have evolved. Streaming is currently a new phenomena that has taken over the industry and changed the structure of the home library. Rather than aid the home library, this …

The Role Of Nipsnap1 In Oxidative Stress, Maha Attar
The Role Of Nipsnap1 In Oxidative Stress, Maha Attar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
NIPSNAP1 (4-nitrophenyl phosphatase domain and non-neuronal SNAP25-like protein homolog1) is an evolutionarily conserved mitochondrial protein that interacts with the cytoplasmic domain of the Alzheimer's Disease (AD) amyloid precursor protein (APP). NIPSNAP1 interaction with APP may contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and possibly to neurodegeneration associated with AD. To investigate the molecular and cellular role of NIPSNAP1, we created a NIPSNAP1 knockdown cell line using shRNA lentiviral strategy. Immunoblot analysis showed that one shRNA construct reduced NIPSNAP1 protein levels by approximately 85%. Reduction of NIPSNAP1 protein required at least 10 days after shRNA lentiviral transduction, suggesting that NIPSNAP1 protein is highly stable …

Activity Patterns Of The Eastern Woodrat (Neotoma Floridana Illinoensis) In Western Tennessee, Jessica Davin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Activity patterns of the eastern woodrat (Neotoma floridana illinoensis) in southwestern Tennessee (Shelby Co.) were investigated at the Edward J. Meeman Biological Station. Patterns were captured using inrared, motion-triggered cameras at bait stations at 3 sites over seasons during 2013-2016. Photographs were examined to determine periods of activity and to observe different feeding strategies (solitary, aggressive, and non-aggressive). Analyses of data indicated that eastern woodrats were primarily nocturnal. The eastern woodrats showed greatest seasonal activity during the fall and approximately equal activity during summer, spring, and winter months. Analyses of data indicated they were solitary and agonistic towards conspecifics and …

Visitor Characteristics, Attitudes, And Management Preferences Of The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, Samuel J. Rhodes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex (BMWC) encompasses 3 federal wilderness areas and spans over 1.5 million acres of iconic mountains and valleys in northwestern Montana. Here visitors can find a plethora of recreation opportunity that give access to some of the most rugged country that can be found in the lower 48 states. However, managing wilderness areas comes with the challenge of both preserving the natural resources found within their borders and enabling opportunities for recreational experiences. Wilderness social scientists always have striven to determine the type of visitors coming to wilderness, and see what sorts of experiences they pursue. …

Understanding The Telematic Apparatus, Patrick Muller, Benjamin Burger, Joel De Giovanni, Matthias Ziegler
Understanding The Telematic Apparatus, Patrick Muller, Benjamin Burger, Joel De Giovanni, Matthias Ziegler
Journal of Network Music and Arts
Under the conditions of its geographic distribution, the “telematic performance” can be regarded as a remediation of traditional concert, theater or dance formats. Conversely, and as this paper argues, the telematic performance can also be understood as an artistic format of its own right, one which then can serve as a trope for social interaction under the conditions of critical posthumanism. To gain a wider perspective, this paper analyzes Alan Turing’s “Imitation Game” from his seminal article Computing Machinery and Intelligence, 1950, proposing it as an early conceptualization of a telematic performance. This against-the-grain reading of Turing’s text reveals certain …

Tipping The Balance Towards 21st Century Skills Through Peer-To-Peer Learning: A Cross-Disciplinary Pilot Of Peer Review Software, John Mccormick, Lisa Spitz, Liv Cummins
Staff Scholarship
There is growing recognition that many college students enter the workplace lacking “21st Century Skills” such as critical thinking, collaboration and communication. Peer-to-peer feedback provides a large number of benefits, including these “lifelong learning” skills valued by industry. Peer review, however, poses many challenges: for instructors; these include management of the process and poor quality of peer feedback; and for students, socioemotional barriers. Key socioemotional challenges are learners’ lack of trust in the process, in their peers, and in themselves as reviewers. This paper describes a pilot of a web-based peer review software called “Peergrade”, which was found highly effective …
