Radiocarbon Evidence For Initial Early Formative Period Occupation In Coastal Oaxaca, Mexico, Guy David Hepp
Radiocarbon Evidence For Initial Early Formative Period Occupation In Coastal Oaxaca, Mexico, Guy David Hepp
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Seven AMS radiocarbon dates (1950–1525 cal BC) from controlled contexts demonstrate Early Formative period occupation in coastal Oaxaca, Mexico. These dated elements from the site of La Consentida include hearths, occupational surfaces, carbon adhering to pottery from a midden, and human bone collagen processed with XAD purification. They were excavated from primary contexts and do not represent redeposited materials. An eighth sample, dated to the Middle Formative period, is considered postoccupational. The diversity of dated deposits and features, their distribution, and their overlapping calibrated ranges indicate settlement by an initial Early Formative period village.

Gender Equity In The Farmed Animal Movement, Lewis Bollard
Gender Equity In The Farmed Animal Movement, Lewis Bollard
General – Farm Animal Issues
As a result of several scandals involving inappropriate behavior by male farmed animal advocates, many people in the farmed animal movement are now asking: where are we on gender diversity, equity, and inclusion? And how can we help ensure that all genders have an equal ability to succeed in the movement? Fifteen US-based and ten international farmed animal groups met the selection criterion of spending more than $1 million on farmed animal advocacy. For example, 46.7% of the Boards of these groups had at least 50% female membership while 20% had less than 20%. Several approaches to address gender inequities …
Impact Investing For Farm Animals, Lewis Bollard
Impact Investing For Farm Animals, Lewis Bollard
General – Farm Animal Issues
The Promise of Impact Investing
Some of the most exciting developments for farm animals are happening in the private sector. Over 100 companies are selling ever better plant-based meat and dairy to an expanding market, while another two dozen are racing to sell the first animal products grown directly from cells. These companies’ products could one day eliminate farm animal suffering entirely. This exciting trend has prompted another one: impact investing to support these startups. The premise is simple: instead of investing your money in amoral (and at times immoral) corporations, invest it in startups working to end factory farming. …
Will Companies Make Good On Cage-Free Pledges, Lewis Bollard
Will Companies Make Good On Cage-Free Pledges, Lewis Bollard
General – Farm Animal Issues
From 2015-17, advocates secured pledges from over 300 US food companies to eliminate battery cages for the more than 240M egg-laying hens in their supply chains, mostly by 2025. (Advocates also secured another 800+ pledges from non-US food companies — the subject of a future newsletter.) This was a big win for the farm animal movement. Fewer than 50 full-time advocates pushed the $9B US egg industry to commit to eliminate its core business practice — confining hens in tiny cages — at a cost to the industry of $7B-$9.5B. A 2016 Washington Post front-page story declared a “victory for …
10 Years Of Progress For Farm Animals, Lewis Bollard
10 Years Of Progress For Farm Animals, Lewis Bollard
General – Farm Animal Issues
It’s hard to be a farm animal advocate. Most of the world’s problems — poverty, war, disease — are getting smaller, if always too slowly. But factory farming is getting bigger: the number of animals suffering in factory farms globally has more than doubled in the last two decades alone. Worse, it often feels like we’re not making progress. After decades of veg advocacy, just 5% of Americans self-identify as vegetarian, while 86% say they “actively try to include” chicken in their diet — two numbers that have barely changed in two decades of Gallup polls. A 2019 Eurogroup poll …

MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Given the pace of change in technology, guiding principles in technology design of health care solutions have been largely supported by increasing wireless data transmission bandwidth and growing computational power. These principles have introduced a new medium to approach surgery. The fast pace of innovation in surgical technology coupled with the projected shortage of up to 120,000 surgeons by 2030, create a fertile ground for the implementation of telementoring into the surgical arena to learn and transfer new surgical skills in surgical laparoscopy procedures. (Ponsky, 2014). The present study aims to review the development of surgical telementoring (ST) as a …
The Structural Basis For Brain Health, Barbara Khalibinzwa Marebwa
The Structural Basis For Brain Health, Barbara Khalibinzwa Marebwa
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality in the United States. Stroke and dementia are the leading causes of adult disability worldwide, and the 5th and 6th leading causes of mortality respectively in the United States. Furthermore, CVD annually accounts for approximately $330 billion in direct and indirect costs in the United States: approximately one in seven health care dollars is spent on CVD. While these diseases have different etiologies, and present with different clinical manifestations and prognosis, converging evidence increasingly supports the idea of CVD as a common pathophysiological origin of cerebrovascular disease, potentially indicating a complex …
Enhancing Aldehyde Detoxification As A Novel Therapy For Liver Fibrosis And Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury, Hereward John Wimborne
Enhancing Aldehyde Detoxification As A Novel Therapy For Liver Fibrosis And Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury, Hereward John Wimborne
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress is a common component and important mediator in the pathogenesis of many liver injuries and of liver fibrosis. Although reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known to have effects on many important biological macromolecules and cell organelles, such as mitochondria, how oxidative stress causes liver injury/fibrosis has not been fully elucidated. ROS oxidize membrane lipids to form lipid radicals which undergo ß-scission to form aldehydes, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). These aldehydes are highly reactive and readily form adducts with proteins and nucleic acids. Relatively little is known about the role of aldehydes in the pathogenesis of …
Social Learning Through Associative Processes: A Computational Theory, Johan Lind, Stefano Ghirlanda, Magnus Enquist
Social Learning Through Associative Processes: A Computational Theory, Johan Lind, Stefano Ghirlanda, Magnus Enquist
Publications and Research
Social transmission of information is a key phenomenon in the evolution of behaviour and in the establishment of traditions and culture. The diversity of social learning phenomena has engendered a diverse terminology and numerous ideas about underlying learning mechanisms, at the same time that some researchers have called for a unitary analysis of social learning in terms of associative processes. Leveraging previous attempts and a recent computational formulation of associative learning, we analyse the following learning scenarios in some generality: learning responses to social stimuli, including learning to imitate; learning responses to non-social stimuli; learning sequences of actions; learning to …

Purpose: Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, often remains undetected until irreversible vision loss has occurred. Treatments focus on lowering intraocular pressure (IOP), the only modifiable and readily measurable risk factor. However, IOP can vary and does not always predict disease progression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are promising biomarkers. They are abundant and stable in biological fluids, including plasma and aqueous humor (AqH). We aimed to identify differentially expressed miRNAs in AqH and plasma from glaucoma, exfoliation syndrome (XFS), and control subjects. Methods: Plasma and AqH from two ethnic cohorts were harvested from glaucoma or XFS (often associated with glaucoma, n …
Role Of The Rostromedial Tegmental Nucleus (Rmtg) In Aversive Processing, Hao Li
Role Of The Rostromedial Tegmental Nucleus (Rmtg) In Aversive Processing, Hao Li
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Reward learning is increasingly well understood to involve a major role of dopamine (DA) in reward-seeking and reinforcement, but reward-seeking behavior almost always incurs some costs or punishment, which are less well understood, especially in addictive disorders involving a marked failure to inhibit reward-seeking in the face of high costs or punishment. The rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg), a GABAergic afferent to midbrain DA neurons, has been hypothesized to encode punishment-related signals and inhibit DA responses to them. However, existing studies have only tested RMTg responses to a few aversive stimuli and generalizability of RMTg encoding of aversive stimuli has not …
Sparc Produced By Bone-Marrow Derived Cells Contributes To Myocardial Fibrosis, Hannah Jeanne Riley
Sparc Produced By Bone-Marrow Derived Cells Contributes To Myocardial Fibrosis, Hannah Jeanne Riley
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is commonly associated with individuals with hypertension. Increases in myocardial hemodynamic load are recapitulated in murine models of pressure overload (PO) induced by trans-aortic constriction (TAC). In both human and TAC hearts, increases in fibrosis are demonstrated and align with increases in myocardial stiffness, a hallmark of diastolic dysfunction in HFpEF. Previous studies indicated that the matricellular protein secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) was essential for the development of cardiac fibrosis in TAC hearts, however the …
Viral Sovereignty, Intellectual Property, And The Changing Global System For Sharing Pathogens For Infectious Disease Research, Sam F. Halabi
Viral Sovereignty, Intellectual Property, And The Changing Global System For Sharing Pathogens For Infectious Disease Research, Sam F. Halabi
Faculty Publications
This article analyzes the substantial changes under way in the global system for infectious disease research demonstrated by the changing practices in negotiating MTAs. Instead of the open system of sharing bacterial and viral human pathogens that characterized the research system for much of the 20th Century, notions of "viral sovereignty," access contingent upon provisions like sharing research benefits, and acrimonious negotiations, are far more common. The increasing barriers to the flow of research material and related data like genetic sequencing information are posing threats to public health responses and the potential use of such resources in diagnostic, therapeutic, and …
Dung Beetle Functional Traits Related To Restoration Management Practices In Tallgrass Prairie, Sheryl C. Hosler
Dung Beetle Functional Traits Related To Restoration Management Practices In Tallgrass Prairie, Sheryl C. Hosler
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The restoration of degraded ecosystems often focuses on reestablishing species richness and diversity of native organisms, especially plants. However, functional trait descriptions of communities are emerging as a more comprehensive approach to evaluating restorations, including consumer communities. I examined the species composition and functional traits of dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabeidae) communities across a chronosequence of restored tallgrass prairie in Illinois, in which sites varied in the presence of bison and the application of prescribed fire during the study. Data were collected on behavioral guild and body measurements, and functional diversity metrics (functional richness, evenness, divergence, and dispersion) were analyzed using …

La Heroica Alcahueta Dormía La Siesta: La Celestina’S Presence In La Regenta, Leyla Rouhi, Julie A. Cassiday
Decimonónica
Our epigraph comes from the closing scene of the opening chapter of Leopoldo Alas’s La Regenta (1885). Here Vetusta’s resident erudite, Saturnino Bermúdez, shows the local cathedral to a provincial couple visiting “la heroica ciudad” (I: 135) while he clumsily flirts with Obdulia Fandiño, the town’s most scandalous citizen. This first chapter of La Regenta famously begins with all of Vetusta taking its daily siesta while it “descansaba oyendo entre sueños” (I: 136), as Fermín de Pas, canon theologian and vicar general, ascends the cathedral bell tower to survey his drowsing domain. The multiple symbolic functions of Vetusta’s geography have …
Ecos Y Desvaríos Espiritistas En El Donador De Almas De Amado Nervo, Tatiana Suárez Turriza
Ecos Y Desvaríos Espiritistas En El Donador De Almas De Amado Nervo, Tatiana Suárez Turriza
Representaciones De La Modernidad En Dos Cuadros De Costumbres, Francisco Solares-Larrave
Representaciones De La Modernidad En Dos Cuadros De Costumbres, Francisco Solares-Larrave

Progress At What Price?: Defenses Of Indigenous Peoples In Argentine Writing About Patagonia (1894-1904), Ashley Kerr
Decimonónica
Official history boasts that by the mid-1880s, the Argentine government had definitively brought Patagonia under national control, neutralizing the savagery associated with both the land and the indigenous people who lived there. The 1881 Tratado de Límites between Argentina and Chile and the 1884 Ley Orgánica de los Territorios Nacionales demarcated the limits of national sovereignty and organized the newly-formed provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego. General Lorenzo Vittner declared the successful end of the Conquista del desierto in 1885, ending military efforts to subdue indigenous populations in the south (Mases 59). At the …

Exploring Muslim Contexts
Analyses the links between gender and governance in contemporary Muslim majority countries and diaspora contexts.
Following a period of rapid political change, both globally and in relation to the Middle East and South Asia, this collection sets new terms of reference for an analysis of the intersections between global, state, non-state and popular actors and their contradictory effects on the politics of gender.
The volume charts the shifts in academic discourse and global development practice that shape our understanding of gender both as an object of policy and as a terrain for activism. Nine individual case studies systematically explore how …

Federal courts are currently split, even within particular districts, on the basic question of what a plaintiff must show to establish that a defendant’s conduct constitutes trademark dilution by blurring. Federal trademark law defines “dilution by blurring” as “association arising from the similarity between a mark or trade name and a famous mark that impairs the distinctiveness of the famous mark.” In construing this statutory language, a majority of courts have held that to establish blurring, a plaintiff need only show that consumers associate the defendant’s mark with the plaintiff’s famous mark. These courts appear to assume that to the …

Infection-related causes are second only to cardiovascular events for mortality among end-stage renal disease patients. This review will provide an overview of hemodialysis catheter-, graft-, and fistula-related infections with emphasis on diagnosis and management in specific settings. Use of catheters at the initiation of dialysis has remained unchanged at 80%. Of all access-related bloodstream infections (BSIs), 70% occur in patients with catheters. The risk factors for BSIs in tunneled, cuffed catheters include the duration of the catheter, past catheter-related bacteremia, left-sided internal jugular vein catheters, hypoalbuminemia, and immunosuppression. Surprisingly, human immunodeficiency virus infection has not been associated with a higher …

It’S Elementary: The Bayeux Tapestry As A Medieval Educational Tool, Sarah Bulger
OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal
The Bayeux Tapestry, a 230-foot-long, 950-year-old Anglo-Norman embroidery has baffled historians resulting in extensive (and diverse) scholarship since its rediscovery in the eighteenth century. The Bayeux Tapestry plays a preeminent role (outside of contemporaneous manuscripts and texts) in deciphering aspects of medieval life in England through its visual representation of the age of the Norman Conquest. Long-standing assumptions about the Bayeux Tapestry’s commission, production, and purpose have accumulated through the years based on a single inventory document from 1476 postulating its intended location and function as a religious ornament for Bayeux Cathedral. Modern academics have explored themes readily visible …
