Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl Jan 2019

Beaded Aprons Of The Coastal Peoples Of The Guianas, Michael Oehrl

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Although many beaded aprons from the coastal area of the Guianas are among the oldest preserved collected objects of the South American lowlands, there is still no general consensus as to who the manufacturers of these aprons were. The glass beads used differ from those typically employed at the end of the 19th century and can be dated between 1750 and 1850. In the literature and museums, these aprons are not frequently described in detail, and the author is not aware of any early object for which a collector has provided more detailed information. This article is intended to give …

The Cost Of Forest Preservation In The Brazilian Amazon: The “Arc Of Deforestation”, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard Perrin Jan 2019

The Cost Of Forest Preservation In The Brazilian Amazon: The “Arc Of Deforestation”, Felipe De Figueiredo Silva, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

We estimate the trade-off between agricultural production and forest preservation for the municipalities in Brazil’s agricultural frontier, the so-called “arc of deforestation,” using census and deforestation data for 2006. We use a nonparametric directional output distance function that allows us to identify the gradients of the production possibility frontier, which are the trade-offs of interest. We found that, on average, $979 is forgone in annual livestock, timber, and grain revenues to conserve 1 hectare of forest. This translates, ceteris paribus, to an average present value of costs to permanently sequester CO2 of $16.36/t, higher than most previous estimates.

Wildlife Viewing: The Impact Of Money-Back Guarantees, Takahiro Kubo, Taro Mieno, Koichi Kuriyama Jan 2019

Wildlife Viewing: The Impact Of Money-Back Guarantees, Takahiro Kubo, Taro Mieno, Koichi Kuriyama

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Wildlife sightings are not always guaranteed. To address this risk, tour operators often offer a money-back guarantee as a refund mechanism. However, studies have overlooked the influences of such refund mechanisms on tourists' tour participation decisions and tourism revenue. We conducted choice experiments to examine the impact of such mechanisms using a case of Amami rabbit tourism in Japan. We found that the guarantee significantly influences the tourists’ decision-making and tour revenue. In particular, we found that the expected tourist participation rate and tour guide revenue vary drastically depending on the probability of the rabbit encounter. The maximum expected revenue …

The Mismatch In Distributions Of Vertebrates And The Plants That They Disperse, Jacob W. Dittel, Christopher M. Moore, Stephen B. Vander Wall Jan 2019

The Mismatch In Distributions Of Vertebrates And The Plants That They Disperse, Jacob W. Dittel, Christopher M. Moore, Stephen B. Vander Wall

Biology

Little is known about how mutualistic interactions affect the distribution of species richness on broad geographic scales. Because mutualism positively affects the fitness of all species involved in the interaction, one hypothesis is that the richness of species involved should be positively correlated across their range, especially for obligate relationships. Alternatively, if mutualisms involve multiple mutualistic partners, the distribution of mutualists should not necessarily be related, and patterns in species distributions might be more strongly correlated with environmental factors. In this study, we compared the distributions of plants and vertebrate animals involved in seeddispersal mutualisms across the United States and …

Mentorship Through Storytelling Program, Debra Marie Perry Jan 2019

Mentorship Through Storytelling Program, Debra Marie Perry

Theses and Graduate Projects

The Mentorship Through Storytelling Program began in response to an urgent need to reduce registered nurse (RN) turnover rates and improve nurses’ satisfaction on a medical surgical unit in a Midwestern Hospital. The unit was challenged to hire, integrate, and retain a multigenerational team of RNs. Guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, the Mentorship Through Storytelling Program was initiated in the fall of 2018 after doing a broad literature review and adapting the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses’ Mentorship Program to include the concepts of storytelling, mentoring, and caring. Digital recordings of five expert nurses’ oral histories (stories) …

The Heart Of Atrial Fibrillation: Integrating Yoga For Holistic Care, Jessica Lee Mcalpine Jan 2019

The Heart Of Atrial Fibrillation: Integrating Yoga For Holistic Care, Jessica Lee Mcalpine

Theses and Graduate Projects

Atrial fibrillation (afib) is a chronic disease with no reliable cure that is caused by a chaotic heart rhythm. The heart has both metaphysical and physical meaning as the place where the spirit resides, a symbol of love, and as an organ that provides life. Yoga can be integrated as a holistic modality that has both physical and metaphysical benefits. Literature demonstrates that yoga can reduce self-assessed symptoms of afib, secondary outcomes, and objective episodes of afib. Negative emotional states can increase afib frequency. Yoga has been found to improve emotional states, ability to cope with chronic disease, perceived wellness, …

Sensitivity Of Single Organ Versus Multiorgan Point-Of-Care Ultrasound Compared To Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography In Detecting Pulmonary Embolism In Adult Patients, Jessica Stangenes Jan 2019

Sensitivity Of Single Organ Versus Multiorgan Point-Of-Care Ultrasound Compared To Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography In Detecting Pulmonary Embolism In Adult Patients, Jessica Stangenes

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of venous thromboembolism and its diagnosis remains a challenge. The current gold standard to confirm diagnosis of PE is multi-row computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) but has limitations and alternative imaging modalities are being investigated. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been applied in the diagnostic process in PE but whether it can safely replace the gold standard is of question.

Methods: A literature review was conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of single versus multiorgan point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) compared to CTPA in detecting PE in adult patients.

Discussion: Several prospective observational …

Antibiotic Resistance Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae In The United States And Latin American Countries: Contributing Factors And Potential Solutions, Brian Sherman Jan 2019

Antibiotic Resistance Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae In The United States And Latin American Countries: Contributing Factors And Potential Solutions, Brian Sherman

Theses and Graduate Projects

Antibiotics have been heralded as one of the greatest contributions to modern medicine.

While antibiotics have been documented throughout many parts of the world, it was the discovery of penicillin in 1928 that marked the modern era of medicine.1 An antibiotic is a natural, semi-synthetic, or synthetic compound that interferes with the growth of, or results in the death of a microorganism, specifically bacteria.2 These medications are used to treat or prevent infection of humans or animals. With the advent of antibiotics, many infections that would cause significant morbidity and mortality were greatly reduced. The 1930s-1960s is regarded as the …

The Right Vasopressor At The Right Time Does Early Use Of Vasopressors Decrease Morbidity And Mortality In Septic Shock, Michael Kittok Jan 2019

The Right Vasopressor At The Right Time Does Early Use Of Vasopressors Decrease Morbidity And Mortality In Septic Shock, Michael Kittok

Theses and Graduate Projects

Sepsis and septic shock is a disease process that carries a high mortality rate and is responsible for a large portion of healthcare expenditures in the United States. The Surviving Sepsis Campaign has been working to decrease the mortality of sepsis since 2001. Their mission is two-fold; providing evidence based guidelines to help direct treatment, and raising awareness to healthcare providers and patients about sepsis. A main goal in treating sepsis is to reverse the hypoperfused state by giving crystalloid fluids and administering vasopressors, specifically norepinephrine, after patients have received adequate fluids. Would modifying this treatment by giving a combination …

Climate Change And Dengue Fever: Are They Connected?, Chelsey Rilatos Jan 2019

Climate Change And Dengue Fever: Are They Connected?, Chelsey Rilatos

Theses and Graduate Projects

Dengue virus is the most common mosquito born disease worldwide and is an endemic infection in many tropical and subtropical habitats, especially areas where poor public health infrastructure makes it difficult to control. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the dengue virus is a leading cause of febrile illness among travelers returning from Latin America. The dengue virus is a member of the family Flaviviridae and is transmitted to humans by the vector Aedes mosquitos, most frequently the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and secondarily by Aedes albopictus. Dengue infection results in a spectrum of clinical disease, ranging …

Engineering Of Gold Nanoparticles For Drug Delivery, Fangchao Liu Jan 2019

Engineering Of Gold Nanoparticles For Drug Delivery, Fangchao Liu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Due to their ease of synthesis, versatile surface chemistry, ease of imaging, and biocompatibility, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are employed as drug delivery devices in the treatment of respiratory problems associated with spinal cord injury (SCI). We have developed a method for the synthesis of a tripartite nanoconjugate comprised of an AuNP drug carrier chemically conjugated to a transporter protein (wheat germ agglutinin coupled to horseradish peroxidase or WGA-HRP) and to potent SCI drugs. The therapeutic efficacy and biodistribution were studied in a validated animal model. Our results show that a single administration of the nanoconjugate improved diaphragmatic activity at a …

Use Of Intraarticular Injections Of Platelet-Rich Plasma In The Treatment Of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Review Article, Naveed Baloch, Obada Hasan, Zain Baig, Umme-E-Hani Abdullah, Mohammad Atif, Hiroshi Ohuchi Jan 2019

Use Of Intraarticular Injections Of Platelet-Rich Plasma In The Treatment Of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Review Article, Naveed Baloch, Obada Hasan, Zain Baig, Umme-E-Hani Abdullah, Mohammad Atif, Hiroshi Ohuchi

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common degenerative conditions affecting knee joint. As our understanding in the disease pathogenesis is evolving, so do the treatment modalities. One of the postulated mechanisms suggests the production of inflammatory cytokines secondary to repeated micro trauma than in turn lead to cartilage damage overtime. Cartilage being avascular structure has limited potential for repair. Based on this, recent studies have been focusing on stimulating cartilage-healing process by growth factors. This is where platelet-rich plasma comes in to light. Literature is showing promising results of platelet-rich plasma in treating knee osteoarthritis. In this review we have …

Maternal Inflammation At 0.7 Gestation In Ewes Leads To Intrauterine Growth Restriction And Impaired Glucose Metabolism In Offspring At 30 D Of Age, Robert J. Posont, Caitlin N. Cadaret, Kristin A. Beede, Joslyn K. Beard, Rebecca M. Swanson, Rachel L. Gibbs, Jessica L. Petersen, Dustin T. Yates

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Fetal programming associated with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) leads to lifelong deficits in growth and metabolic function (Hales and Barker, 2013). IUGR arises when fetuses respond to poor in utero conditions by developing adaptations that repartition nutrients to critical tissues and away from skeletal muscle (Yates et al., 2012, 2018). This fetal programming is beneficial in utero but leads to persistent reductions in muscle mass and glucose homeostasis in offspring (DeFronzo et al., 1981). Recent studies by our laboratory in sheep and rats demonstrate that maternal inflammation during gestation induces fetal inflammatory adaptations that impair growth and disrupt muscle glucose …
