In/Visible Identities: Illusion, Abstraction, Politics, And The Phenomenology Of Stateless Being, Abeer Obaido
In/Visible Identities: Illusion, Abstraction, Politics, And The Phenomenology Of Stateless Being, Abeer Obaido
Theses & ETDs
Illusion with abstraction can be understood as a paradox discerned in painting practices, where the development of space is interrupted by a pictorial theater conditioned to the conventions of the medium. This dynamic interplay is associated with phenomenological aspects that function as a backdrop to the series of paintings entitled, Blank. The only presupposition that this series brings is that any appearance which may otherwise go unnoticed does appear. This series and accompanying paper—through referring to The Visible and the Invisible aesthetic theory of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Hannah Arendt’s phenomenological description of the non-person mentality—attempts to show how the stateless …
Measuring Coastal Erosion At Fort Clinch State Park, Florida., Patricia Viney
Measuring Coastal Erosion At Fort Clinch State Park, Florida., Patricia Viney
Theses & ETDs
Of the 825 mi. of eroded coastal and inlet areas in Florida, there are 421 mi. of critically eroding beaches. Fort Clinch State Park is located on Florida’s northernmost barrier island, Amelia Island. In the park alone, the entire 2 mi. stretch of the inlet as well as the Atlantic beach portion (0.7 mi.) is listed as critically eroded. The subject of this thesis was to measure the Atlantic beach portion of Fort Clinch State Park at five different monument markers. These monument markers have been designated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as R09, R10, R11, R12 and …
Understanding The Real Dionysus: A Modern Translation Of Euripides’ Bacchae, Jakob Hedin
Understanding The Real Dionysus: A Modern Translation Of Euripides’ Bacchae, Jakob Hedin
Theses & ETDs
In my thesis I went about accomplishing two major tasks: To translate this age old text into the modern era while remaining authentic to the original, and to bridge the gap of understanding between old and new and give modern readers a method to understand the great works of the past in their own way. My thesis outlines many key pieces of context which allow for a more informed read of the Bacchae. I explain who Euripides is and how he influences the underlying myth in his work. I explain the mythological components so that we can understand the characters …
Exploring Effects Of Imagination On The Robotic Hand Illusion, Cannzana Stockwil
Exploring Effects Of Imagination On The Robotic Hand Illusion, Cannzana Stockwil
Theses & ETDs
Body ownership illusions provide novel insights into what the brain can process as one’s body. Since the classic Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI), much research has been done on developing similar hand illusions and exploring what factors are needed to induce them. In the Robotic Hand Illusion (RoHI), participants wear a glove on one of their hands, allowing them to control the movements of a robotic hand (when they move a finger, the robotic hand moves its corresponding finger). Then the participant rests their real hand (wearing the glove) under a table while they view the robotic hand on top of …
Enemy At The Gates: The Rise And Fall Of The Chanka Confederation, Cesar Augusto Chavez Lecca
Enemy At The Gates: The Rise And Fall Of The Chanka Confederation, Cesar Augusto Chavez Lecca
Theses & ETDs
The Late Intermediate Period of Peruvian history [ca 1000-1400 C.E.] saw the rise of prominent kingdoms that quickly expanded beyond their borders in the span of a century or so. Most archaeological research has been focused on the Inca Empire and the Kingdom of Chimú. The focus on these two cultures, however, has eclipsed the complexity of Andean geo-politics during the Late Intermediate Period as different groups of people fought for supremacy, control of vital trade networks, resources, and to honor their ancestors. This research paper will explore the Chanka culture [1000 to 1450 C.E.]. This was one of the …
Cultivating The Cultural Object: An Ecocritical Examination Of Gothic Forests From Radcliffe And Brown To Le Fanu And Stoker, C. J. Schaffer Vignati
Cultivating The Cultural Object: An Ecocritical Examination Of Gothic Forests From Radcliffe And Brown To Le Fanu And Stoker, C. J. Schaffer Vignati
Theses & ETDs
Gothic literature often relies on space as abstraction, projected “psychic landscapes” in which the intentions of the characters resonate with a setting that responds to their intimate desires and fears. In doing so, the Gothic created cultural touchstones that are still effective today. This thesis examines the forests within four Gothic novels, arguing that when a non-human space is figured as supernatural, or as an “other”, it engenders conflict around the false assumption that humans are discrete subjects. The forest becomes villainous; it may serve a master; it may threaten us; it may surround us and encroach upon us; it …
Personality And Mental Illness: Do Emotional Stability And Emotional Well-Being Predict Psychopathology?, Sage Robert
Personality And Mental Illness: Do Emotional Stability And Emotional Well-Being Predict Psychopathology?, Sage Robert
Theses & ETDs
The present research tested the hypothesis that individuals who score high in emotional stability and high in emotional well-being (EWB) will have a lower probability of having a mental illness. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) was used to collect 129 participants who completed a three-part survey measuring personality, emotional well-being, and psychopathology. Part 1 of the survey included the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) which asked questions pertaining to the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience). In part 2, participants completed the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) to measure emotional well-being. In part 3, participants completed …
“Step Easily Into The Dreamer’S Tale”: Healing Trauma Through The Magical In The Works Of Gabriel García Márquez And Toni Morrison, Shelby Meyers
“Step Easily Into The Dreamer’S Tale”: Healing Trauma Through The Magical In The Works Of Gabriel García Márquez And Toni Morrison, Shelby Meyers
Theses & ETDs
García Márquez and Toni Morrison, both Nobel Prize winners, write powerfully about characters seeking freedom from trauma caused by colonialism and slavery. Characters’ efforts often involve what the dominant western culture would call the supernatural, such as divination, witchcraft, and flight. Each writer focuses primarily with families and community. Although men play a strong role in these works, women characters in particular possess a unique relationship with the supernatural and aid other characters in understanding, predicting, and overcoming fate. In the introduction, I deal with trauma theory in terms of the psychological and historical, concerning non-western, postcolonial, and minority people. …
Video Games And Gender Representation: Time For A Change?, Rebecca Phillips
Video Games And Gender Representation: Time For A Change?, Rebecca Phillips
Theses & ETDs
Women are often portrayed as objects and catalysts in video games for the historically male protagonist. We explored the appeal of video games with nonsexualized female game characters versus the stereotypical white, male protagonist. Participants of different genders saw a video game trailer with a male protagonist or a female protagonist and then rated how likely they would be to interact with the video game in various ways (purchasing for themselves or others, playing the game, etc.). Preference for games that had male and female protagonists did not vary by participant gender. Surprisingly, male participants reported that their gender was …
Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns
Critiquing Environmental Rhetoric: An Exploration Of Ecocriticism And Its Value To Activism, Tristen Johns
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the field of ecocriticism, tracing its conceptualization as a subgenre of literary critique and discussing its implications for the community of scholars and environmental activists. I explore commonly cited definitions of the field and examine ecocritics’ works. I also discuss the importance of the ecocritical approach and its value to the field of environmental study and activism. I advocate for the importance of the humanities to work in environmental studies, a perspective often missing in my experience from research related to the ecological crisis. Ecocritics do far more than contribute critiques of specific pieces of literature, but …
Electronic Music Diwhy Music Programming Languages In Theory And Practice, Sullivan Boyd
Electronic Music Diwhy Music Programming Languages In Theory And Practice, Sullivan Boyd
Theses & ETDs
In electronic music academia, there are programming languages that can be used to generate music or to describe signal chains for sound that's rendered in realtime, as the program is being written; they can be "live coded." These programming environments, used exclusively for sound and music, belong in the category of domain- specific programming languages, although in the course of this thesis they are referred to using their specific domain: music programming languages. While they receive special attention in the course of an electronic music pedagogy in academia (they're taught in electronic music classes), they remain largely a curiosity to …
The Influence Of Gain And Loss Framed Messages On Dog Owners’ Behavioral Intentions, Attitudes, And Support For Initiatives Related To Microchipping, Charlotte Redman
The Influence Of Gain And Loss Framed Messages On Dog Owners’ Behavioral Intentions, Attitudes, And Support For Initiatives Related To Microchipping, Charlotte Redman
Theses & ETDs
Dogs are one of the most popular types of pets in the United States. Unfortunately, one of the risks associated with owning a dog is that it can go missing. This is why it is important for dog owners to provide their dogs with some form of identification, such as a collar with tags. However, collars are not always a foolproof solution. Fortunately, dog owners also have the option to microchip their dogs. Microchipping is a permanent, implantable form of identification that uses radiofrequency identification technology to store information. This means that if a dog becomes lost, then their owner’s …
The Yucatec Maya Milpa: Integrating Livelihood, Environment, And Culture, Allegra Nolan
The Yucatec Maya Milpa: Integrating Livelihood, Environment, And Culture, Allegra Nolan
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the milpa agricultural system utilized by the indigenous Maya of the Yucatán Peninsula. Informed by both personal fieldwork and anthropological texts, the first two chapters describe the technical and cultural practices within the system. Through this description, I demonstrate the multi-faceted character of the milpa, a framework for food production, environmental management, and cultural expression. This traditional system is not confined to a period of history, but rather continuously adapts to changes in environmental conditions, human needs, and market influences. However, the productive capacity of the milpa field has declined under the pressures of increasingly intense change, …

Taiwan Is Giving Buddhism Back To The Living: A Study Of The Four Great Mountains Of Buddhism In Taiwan With A Focus On Fo Guang Shan, Lorelei Domke
Theses & ETDs
The Buddhist reform movement navigated through the muddy past of political and social upheaval in China and Taiwan; ultimately leading to a beautiful lotus blossoming: Buddhist modernism. Buddhist modernism, as described by David McMahan, has established strong influential roots in Taiwan through Humanistic Buddhism and socially engaged Buddhism. Fo Guang Shan (FGS), Tzu Chi, Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM), and Chung Tai Shan are the “Four Great Mountains” that are at the forefront of modern Buddhism in Taiwan. Each has ties to the core mission of Humanistic and socially engaged Buddhism. FGS is a Humanistic Buddhist organization that will be the …
The Effects Of Altitude On Asthma And Investigation Of Traditional Andean Treatments, Ian Imants Pumpurs
The Effects Of Altitude On Asthma And Investigation Of Traditional Andean Treatments, Ian Imants Pumpurs
Theses & ETDs
Due to asthma’s high prevalence worldwide, it is important to understand how environmental factors such as elevation affect the expression of the disease in order to ultimately improve the quality of life of sufferers. This study reviews the biological basis of the disease and examines the impact that low and high altitude have on the expression and severity of asthmatic symptoms. This review was conducted by examining published articles assessing asthma in specific communities located at various elevations. There were notable differences in the severity of asthmatic symptoms among children and adult populations in these communities. It was determined that …

A Literary And Visual Analysis Of Extinction In The Anthropocene: Focus On Puma Concolor Coryi (Young And Goldman 1946) And Cyclargus Thomasi Bethunbakeri (W.P Comstock And Huntington 1943), Dani Patarroyo-Avila
Theses & ETDs
As growing evidence demonstrates the increased rates of biodiversity loss, methods and efforts for conservation are required to ameliorate flora and fauna devastation. My aim with this thesis is to review current biological and ecological barriers against the conservation of species, focusing on two recent case studies within Florida. Additionally, I consider the influence of visual conduits of conservation promotion for education and funding. I use previous literature on population loss to focus on the methods and results of new and ongoing conservation projects in regard to the Florida panther, Puma concolour coryi and the Miami blue butterfly, Cyclargus thomasi …
Real Life Or Fantasy? Queen’S “Bohemian Rhapsody” And Its Popularity, Sofia Eury
Real Life Or Fantasy? Queen’S “Bohemian Rhapsody” And Its Popularity, Sofia Eury
Theses & ETDs
This paper delves into the history of the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and its popularity since the time of its creation in 1975. Popularity is measured by the song’s relationship to the music industry and its continued public engagement through 2019. To better understand its popularity, I first discuss the history of the “Bohemian Rhapsody” within the context of the music industry, and songwriter and lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury, and the pertinence of his life to the song he created. In 1975, Queen had only existed as a band for a few years, and while they did …
Investigation Of The Effects Of Conservation Management Involving Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus Polyphemus) On The Scrublands Of The University Of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Campus, Cassandra B. Detrio-Darby
Investigation Of The Effects Of Conservation Management Involving Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus Polyphemus) On The Scrublands Of The University Of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Campus, Cassandra B. Detrio-Darby
Theses & ETDs
Gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) play a crucial role in the habitats they live in. As a keystone species, the burrows they dig provide shelter for over 300 other species. Through habitat loss, fragmentation, and exploitation, gopher tortoise populations have been declining. To study how certain conservation strategies affect smaller populations in fragmented areas, this study observed the changes to the gopher tortoise population at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee (USFSM) Campus, referencing a former New College thesis from 2004. The thesis also mentioned a co-occurring, currently endangered plant species, Tillandsia utriculata, so this was also included in this study. …

The Effect Of Moderate Alcohol Consumption On Sodium-Dependent Nutrient Co-Transport In Intestinal Epithelial Cells In Vitro And In Vivo, Molly Rae Butts
The Effect Of Moderate Alcohol Consumption On Sodium-Dependent Nutrient Co-Transport In Intestinal Epithelial Cells In Vitro And In Vivo, Molly Rae Butts
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Alcohol consumption leads to a variety of different health consequences including cardiovascular disease, cancer and malnutrition. This malnutrition is in part due to a sub-optimal diet but also due to the malabsorption of nutrients along the small intestine. Many studies have shown that ethanol directly decreases nutrient absorption along the small intestine; however, few studies have investigated the effect of a moderate dose of ethanol on the transmembrane nutrient co-transporters that line the brush border membrane of the small intestine. The primary fuel source for the small intestine, glutamine, as well as for the entire body, glucose, are …
