Comparison Of Different Functions To Describe Growth From Weaning To Maturity In Crossbred Beef Cattle, Madeline J. Zimmermann, Larry A. Kuehn, Matthew L. Spangler, R. Mark Thallman, Warren M. Snelling, Ronald M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Cow mature weight (MWT) has increased in the past 30 yr. Larger cows cost more to maintain, but their efficiency—and thus profitability— depends on the production environment. Incorporating MWT effectively into selection and mating decisions requires understanding of growth to maturity. The objective of this study was to describe growth to maturity in crossbred beef cattle using Brody, spline, and quadratic functions. Parameter estimates utilized data on crossbred cows from cycle VII and continuous sampling phases of the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. The MWT were estimated at 6 yr from the fitted parameters obtained …

The Maryland Trust Act: The Fate Of The Unknowledgeable Beneficiary, Fred Franke, Deb Howe Jan 2019

The Maryland Trust Act: The Fate Of The Unknowledgeable Beneficiary, Fred Franke, Deb Howe

University of Baltimore Law Forum

When adopting its version of the Uniform Trust Code (the "UTC"), Maryland

made two modifications to the UTC that potentially reduced the ability of trust

beneficiaries to enforce their rights. First, the Maryland Trust Act ("MTA")

did not include the UTC requirement that a trustee shall keep beneficiaries

reasonably informed about the administration of the trust and of material facts

necessary to protect their interests regardless of whether the beneficiary

requests such information. Second, Maryland added to the “virtual

representation” provisions of the MTA that a settlor can designate a

representative regardless of the beneficiary's age or capacity to receive …

Photochemical Efficiencies In Reef-Dwelling Anthozoans: Insights From "Survivor" Species, Natasha Mendez-Ferrer, Pamela Hallock Jan 2019

Photochemical Efficiencies In Reef-Dwelling Anthozoans: Insights From "Survivor" Species, Natasha Mendez-Ferrer, Pamela Hallock

Marine Science Faculty Publications

In recent decades, populations of many coral species have declined dramatically on reefs worldwide. A major factor in coral mortality has been photo-oxidative stress associated with both solar irradiance and elevated temperatures. While many studies have focused on species that have declined, fewer efforts have focused on the “survivor” species, those that have maintained relatively stable populations or even increased in abundance. The objective of this study was to assess temporal variability in photochemical efficiencies (Fv/Fm) as an indicator of potential photo-oxidative stress in the dinoflagellate symbionts in three species, the scleractinians Siderastrea siderea and Montastraea cavernosa, and the …

Population Dynamics Of Pinfish In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico (1998-2016), Meaghan E. Faletti, Dinorah H. Chacin, Jonathan A. Peake, Timothy C. Macdonald, Christopher D. Stallings

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Forage fishes play an important role in marine ecosystems by transferring energy and nutrients through the food web. The population dynamics of forage species can therefore have cascading effects across multiple trophic levels. Here, we analyzed a 19-year dataset on Pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) across four eastern Gulf of Mexico estuaries to investigate population dynamics, inter- and intra-annual synchrony, metapopulation portfolio effects, growth, and habitat effects. Young-of-year growth rates did not differ among estuaries. The population dynamics of these four systems were stable in the long-term, but highly dynamic inter-annually. Intra-annual dynamics were stable and predictable despite variation in long-term means. …

Effects Of Shoal Margin Collapses On The Morphodynamics Of A Sandy Estuary, M. R. Hiatt Jan 2019

Effects Of Shoal Margin Collapses On The Morphodynamics Of A Sandy Estuary, M. R. Hiatt

Faculty Publications

Shoal margin collapses of several million cubic meters have occurred in the Western Scheldt estuary, the Netherlands, on average five times a year over the last decades. While these collapses involve significant volumes of material, their effect on the channel-shoal morphology is unknown. We hypothesize that collapses dynamicize the channel-shoal interactions, which could impact the ecological functioning, flood safety, and navigation in the estuary. The objective is to investigate how locations, probability, type, and volume of shoal margin collapse affect the channel-shoal dynamics. We implemented an empirically validated parameterization for shoal margin collapses and tested its effect on simulated estuary …

Net Land Gain Or Loss For Two Mississippi River Diversions: Caernarvon And Davis Pond, R. Eugene Turner, M Layne, Y Mo, E M. Swenson Jan 2019

Net Land Gain Or Loss For Two Mississippi River Diversions: Caernarvon And Davis Pond, R. Eugene Turner, M Layne, Y Mo, E M. Swenson

Faculty Publications

Coastal wetland restoration can be complex and expensive, so knowing long-term consequences makes it important to inform decisions about if, when, and where to conduct restoration. We determined temporal changes in land gain and loss in receiving basins and adjacent reference areas for two diversions of the Mississippi River in south Louisiana (Davis Pond and Caernarvon initiated in 1991 and 2002, respectively). Water from both diversions went into receiving basins with vegetated areas as did the adjoining reference areas. The results from two different types of satellite imagery analyses demonstrate a net land loss after diversions began. The results were …

The Trump administration has proposed replacing the Clean Water Rule, a 2015 regulation that defined the statutory term waters of the United States to clarify the geographic jurisdiction of the Clean Water Act. Since its promulgation, the Clean Water Rule has been subjected to numerous judicial challenges. We submitted an amici curiae brief to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, explaining why the Clean Water Rule, and its definition of waters of the United States, is scientifically sound. The definition of waters of the United States is a legal determination informed by science. The best available …

Feedback Of Coastal Marshes To Climate Change: Long-Term Phenological Shifts, Y Mo, M S. Kearney, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Coastal marshes are important carbon sinks facing serious threats from climatic stressors. Current research reveals that the growth of individual marsh plants is susceptible to a changing climate, but the responses of different marsh systems at a landscape scale are less clear. Here, we document the multi-decadal changes in the phenology and the area of the extensive coastal marshes in Louisiana, USA, a representative of coastal ecosystems around the world that currently experiencing sea-level rise, temperature warming, and atmospheric CO2 increase. The phenological records are constructed using the longest continuous satellite-based record of the Earth's ecosystems, the Landsat data, and …

Depictions Of Genetic Research In Film Across Film Genres, Jennifer Lund Jan 2019

Depictions Of Genetic Research In Film Across Film Genres, Jennifer Lund

Undergraduate Honors Theses

When people do not have personal experience to draw on, the experiences of characters in film can serve in the mind as a substitute. This research sought to determine what kind of impression films depicting genetics research leave on the audience. These genres were romance (Code 46, 2004), horror (Splice, 2009), thriller (Children of Men, 2006), and drama (Gattaca, 1997). Scenes from the films were analyzed to determine their likely effect on the audience perception of genetics. The researcher hypothesized that the drama and romance films would portray genetics research as neutral, but the science …

Effects Of Temperature And Salinity On Body Fluid Dynamics And Metabolism In The Estuarine Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin), Amanda Southwood Williard, Leigh Anne Harden, T. Todd Jones, Stephen R. Midway Jan 2019

Effects Of Temperature And Salinity On Body Fluid Dynamics And Metabolism In The Estuarine Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys Terrapin), Amanda Southwood Williard, Leigh Anne Harden, T. Todd Jones, Stephen R. Midway

Faculty Publications

The diamondback terrapin is the only temperate turtle species that exclusively inhabits estuarine environments. Morphological, behavioral and physiological features contribute to the terrapin’s ability to regulate body fluid osmotic pressure in a euryhaline environment. Low integument permeability combined with aquatic–terrestrial shuttling behavior limits passive exchange of water and salts with the environment, and terrapins regulate active uptake of salts via alterations in drinking and feeding behavior. The lachrymal salt gland facilitates excretion of excess sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) ions through active transport mechanisms. We investigated body fluid dynamics, oxygen consumption (V O2) and osmotic status …

Development Of Luminescent Tools For Use In The Study Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Krista A. Moore Jan 2019

Development Of Luminescent Tools For Use In The Study Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Krista A. Moore

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis, is a growing problem worldwide due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant and extensively-drug resistant strains of the bacteria. A key to combatting the spread of these strains lies in the understanding of gene expression occurring in Mtb. This study focuses on the development and optimization of a luciferase-based bioluminescent transcriptional reporter that can be used to monitor gene expression in Mtb. The luminescent signal emitted from the reporter can be measured and correlated with the level of transcription of certain genes. This study focuses specifically on a gene called whiB7 which …

How The Body Moves The Mind: Exploring The Effects Of Perspective Of Physical Sensation On Embodied States And Perception, Kathryn G. Satoski Jan 2019

How The Body Moves The Mind: Exploring The Effects Of Perspective Of Physical Sensation On Embodied States And Perception, Kathryn G. Satoski

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how surface engagement through touch affects perception of stimuli and mood. Researchers have found psychological, physiological and cognitive benefits associated with exposure to and interaction with nature. Stress Reduction Theory with Psychoevolutionary framework, and Attention Restoration Theory are often used to explain and interpret results. However, studies that focus on individuals with negative perspectives of nature find a positive affective response to nature is not universal. Rather, individuals respond differently based on their own experience with nature. Childhood exposure and culture have been found to influence attitudes towards nature. Theories of embodied …

The Hyperaccumulation Of Zinc In Sunflowers And Its Effect On Disease Resistance, Rayner J. Seavey Jan 2019

The Hyperaccumulation Of Zinc In Sunflowers And Its Effect On Disease Resistance, Rayner J. Seavey

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Sunflowers are considered to be a part of a group of plants known as hyperaccumulators that share the ability to accumulate high amounts of heavy metals in the above ground organs, far in excess of the levels found in other species, often without suffering any phytotoxic effects. Quantifying the effects of zinc accumulation through the lens of the elemental defense hypothesis is essential for uncovering if there is a means to increase herbivore resistance in agricultural settings without the use of external interventions such as pesticides. A greenhouse study was conducted on four widely grown commercial cultivars of sunflower. Each …

The Effects Of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 On Cx3cl1 Shedding And Axon Retraction, Lauren A. Dobrie

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often leads to irreversible damage, and permanent paralysis inferior to the injury is common (Leibinger et al., 2013). Injury to the spinal cord occurs in two phases. In the first phase, components of the spinal cord are subject to mechanical trauma causing direct damage. In the second phase, damage spreads from the area of injury through molecular processes. Several studies have linked M1 "pro-inflammatory" macrophages to exacerbation of damage by inducing dieback of dystrophic axons, but not healthy axons, through direct cellular contact. Several studies have identified the presence of macrophage subtypes at specific time. A …
