Optimization Of Useful Hard X-Ray Photochemistry, David Lewis Goldberger Dec 2018

Optimization Of Useful Hard X-Ray Photochemistry, David Lewis Goldberger

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

X-ray induced damage is generally considered a nuisance, but in the field of Useful Hard X-ray Photochemistry we harness the highly ionizing and penetrating properties of hard X-rays (> 7 keV) to initiate novel photochemical decomposition and synthesis at ambient and extreme conditions. Preliminary experiments suggest that the energy of irradiating photons and the sample pressure play roles in determining the nature of X-ray induced damage. Here, we present the X-ray energy dependence of damage induced in strontium oxalate, strontium nitrate, and barium nitrate, as well as the pressure dependence of X-ray induced damage of strontium oxalate. Our results indicate …

Disastrous Voting, Moritz Peter Rissmann Dec 2018

Disastrous Voting, Moritz Peter Rissmann

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The central question of this study is ’Is there an observable general trend of electorates punishing incumbents for natural disasters across countries and elections?’ Many scholars have argued for the existence of such behavior, yet the empirical evidence rests mostly on single-country and even single-election studies. I look for a generalizable trend in two original data sets with country-election and country-constituency-election as the unit of analysis respectively. I test the punishment hypothesis by correlating the occurrence of natural disasters to the performance of incumbent parties in national lower house elections. Furthermore, I propose that the effect of natural disasters on …

A Qualitative Multiple Case Study Of The Transition Experiences Of Parents And Service Providers Of Individuals With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (Idd) In A Postsecondary Educational Program, Rebecca S. Rogers Dec 2018

A Qualitative Multiple Case Study Of The Transition Experiences Of Parents And Service Providers Of Individuals With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (Idd) In A Postsecondary Educational Program, Rebecca S. Rogers

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the transition experiences of parents of young adults with IDD who are currently enrolled in a postsecondary educational

program in the Southwest part of the United States. This qualitative multiple-case study used Schlossberg’s transition theory to frame the cases for this report. Schlossberg’s transition theory examines the way in which adults move through various transitions in their lives and what strategies they use to cope with the transitions. The theory identifies three different types of transitions: anticipated transitions, unanticipated transitions, and nonevent transitions. In addition, the theory identifies four coping …

Accurate Vehicle Detection Using Multi-Camera Data Fusion And Machine Learning, Hao Wu Dec 2018

Accurate Vehicle Detection Using Multi-Camera Data Fusion And Machine Learning, Hao Wu

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Computer-vision methods have recently been extensively used in intelligent transportation systems for vehicle detection. However, the detection of severely occluded or partially observed vehicles due to the limited camera fields of view remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a multi-camera vehicle detection system that significantly improves the detection performance under occlusion conditions. The key elements of the proposed method include a novel multi-view region proposal network that localizes the candidate vehicles on the ground plane. We also infer the vehicle occupancies by leveraging multi-view cross-camera context. Experiments are conducted on a dataset captured from a roadway in Richardson, TX, …

Coordination Operation Of Natural Gas And Electricity Network With Line-Pack, Junyang Mi

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the coordinated operation of electricity and natural gas networks considering the line-pack flexibility in the natural gas pipelines. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem. The objective is to minimize the operation cost of the electricity and natural gas networks considering the price of the natural gas supply. Benders decomposition is used to solve the formulated problem. The master problem minimizes the startup and shutdown costs as well as the operation cost of the thermal units other than gas-fired generation units in the electricity network. The first subproblem validates the feasibility of the …

Video-Based Diabetes Education For A Culturally Diverse Population, Heather Harris Dec 2018

Video-Based Diabetes Education For A Culturally Diverse Population, Heather Harris

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Immigrants and refugees represent an underserved population in need of quality, accessible, and culturally appropriate healthcare and education. Diabetes is a chronic condition frequently seen in this population. The author utilized the Wagner Chronic Care Model (CCM) as a theoretical framework for planning diabetes education delivery in this diverse population. Studies report significant health disparities in diabetes care and subsequent poor diabetes quality indicators in refugees and immigrants. Research has found that culturally sensitive diabetes education can improve diabetes outcomes in ethnically diverse populations. The author implemented a translational project to develop and evaluate a video-based diabetes health education intervention …

Conducting Synchronous Assessment Through Web Videoconference To Improve Online Learning: Case Outcomes With Nonparametric Analysis, Leping Liu, Li-Ting Chen

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Online assessment has always been a challenge to online teaching. Educators have been exploring a variety of methods to perform online assessment. However, it appears that there is not enough work in the field focusing on online synchronous assessment. This paper presents two cases that demonstrate the design and implementation of using web videoconference for synchronous assessment in an educational research methods online course and an instructional video production online course. The purpose of the two cases was to explore whether or with what methods student online learning could be improved through synchronous assessment. Case outcomes were analyzed with nonparametric …

The Evolution Of Computational Propaganda: Trends, Threats, And Implications Now And In The Future, Holly Schnader Dec 2018

The Evolution Of Computational Propaganda: Trends, Threats, And Implications Now And In The Future, Holly Schnader

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Computational propaganda involves the use of selected narratives, social networks, and complex algorithms in order to develop and conduct influence operations (Woolley and Howard, 2017). In recent years the use of computational propaganda as an arm of cyberwarfare has increased in frequency. I aim to explore this topic to further understand the underlying forces behind the implementation of this tactic and then conduct a futures analysis to best determine how this topic will change over time. Additionally, I hope to gain insights on the implications of the current and potential future trends that computational propaganda has.

My preliminary assessment shows …

Theorizing Development Of Parasocial Engagement, Riva Tukachinsky, Gayle S. Stever Dec 2018

Theorizing Development Of Parasocial Engagement, Riva Tukachinsky, Gayle S. Stever

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The article proposes a theoretical model of the development of parasocial relationships (PSRs) building on Knapp’s model of relationship development. Through synthesis of research across disciplines, the model conceptualizes the relational goals and parasocial interactions (PSIs) specific to the PSR. The model identifies variables that predict engagement at that level, describes the stage’s outcomes/effects, and considers the utility of existing measures to assess these stages. The conceptualization of PSRs as a dynamic process rather than intensity of a monolithic experience offers new directions worthy of empirical examination.

Parametric Design And Optimization Of A Pivoting S-Type Rudder For Containerships, Chen-Wei Chen, Tsung-Yueh Lin, Bo-Yen Chen, Jen-Shiang Kouh Dec 2018

Parametric Design And Optimization Of A Pivoting S-Type Rudder For Containerships, Chen-Wei Chen, Tsung-Yueh Lin, Bo-Yen Chen, Jen-Shiang Kouh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study proposes an energy-saving S-type rudder design to deal with the inhomogeneous inflow from a rotating propeller behind a containership. The S-type rudder was modelled parametrically using four-digit NACA foils as section profiles together with Non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) surface formulations. A three-stage optimization process is proposed to reduce the number of design iterations necessary to achieve an optimal design. The propulsion simulations were done via CFD software, which solves the hydrodynamics of viscous flow, as governed by the Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. Validations were performed with experimental model tests, including hull resistance, propeller open-water performance, and propulsion in …

Collision Avoidance Path Planning For Ships By Particle Swarm Optimization, Yu-Tao Kang, Wei-Jiong Chen, Da-Qi Zhu, Jin-Hui Wang, Qi-Miao Xie Dec 2018

Collision Avoidance Path Planning For Ships By Particle Swarm Optimization, Yu-Tao Kang, Wei-Jiong Chen, Da-Qi Zhu, Jin-Hui Wang, Qi-Miao Xie

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Ship collision avoidance is a key consideration in maritime systems. Collision avoidance maneuvers depend on navigators’ experience and skill levels. Because both maritime traffic densities and average ship speeds are increasing, the times available for decision-making are decreasing, which elevates the risk of human errors in the collision avoidance process. To reduce the effect of human factors and efficiently prevent collisions between ships navigating in open water with effective visibility, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm can be used to plan ship paths. An improved ship domain dynamic model can assess collision risks in close-range encounters. Several marine traffic scenarios …

Antibiofilm Activities Of Extracts Of The Macroalga Halimeda Sp. From The Red Sea, Alaa Aref Abdullah Gadhi, Mohsen M. O El-Sherbiny, Abdul Mohsin A Al-Sofyani, Mohammad Abdulaziz Ba-Akdah, Sathianeson Satheesh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Marine macroalgae generally keep their surface free from fouling organisms by their antifouling defence. Antifouling activity has been attributed to the production of secondary metabolites. In the present study, antifouling performance of the macroalga Halimeda sp., collected from the Red Sea coastal waters, was assessed using extracts prepared through various methods, including surface extraction, wet sample extraction and dried sample extraction. The solvents methanol and hexane were used to assess the effect of solvents on bioactivity. Results indicated that extracts of the macroalga inhibited growth and settlement of a biofilm-forming bacterial strain. Though the extracts prepared using different methods and …

A Pilot Study On Real-Time Monitoring Of Heart Rate And Movement Speed In Middle-Distance Race Of Physical Education Classes, Daqing Zhu, Xingui Zhang, Lanying Fu, Peiyong Wang, Shaohong Zhai

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

In Chinese universities, students need to participate in the middle-distance-race. Normally, female students are required to participate in the race of 800 meters, while male students are required to participate in the race of 1000 meters. However, it is difficult for teachers to grasp the real time information of students during the race. And there is a lack of timely communications between the teachers and students. Focusing on this issue, this study, with the use of POLAR heart rate sensor and other modern information technologies, expands the original function of the sensor to achieve a concurrent operation of detecting heart …
