The statewide Colorado Healthy Heart Solutions (CHHS) program provides cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor screening and education to the medically underserved and has been shown to improve CVD risk profiles. We aimed to enhance its effectiveness through addition of a mobile health (mHealth) intervention using SMS messaging (termed Cardio SMS). We conducted a prospective, non-randomized controlled pilot trial of this intervention implemented at 5 rural program sites (number of participants N = 204) compared with a contemporaneous propensity-score matched control group from 14 CHHS sites not receiving the intervention (N = 408) between 2012 and 2014. All participants were …

Pledges Of Faith: The Development Of Ancient Roman Business Law And Contemporary Applications, Devon Guanci
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
It is no secret that the legacy of both the Roman Republic and Empire continue to influence Western culture and lifestyle today. In this thesis, I will specifically consider the development of Roman commercial and contract law. As Rome experienced continued expansion into the imperial age, commerce, use of contracts, and global trade worked to establish a robust economy in the empire. Thus, the established system of commercial law created a stable backbone that was necessary for the longevity of ancient Rome. While the modern United States is unlike Rome in many ways, many of the laws, as well as …
The Independent Reign Of Queen Victoria, Emilee Serwan
The Independent Reign Of Queen Victoria, Emilee Serwan
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Queen Victoria is one often most well know monarchs in both English and global history due to the extent of her empire, her personal achievements and for being the second longest reigning monarch in England. However, many have questioned if this reign was hers or if she was actually a figurehead, instead, controlled by the men in her life. In analyzing Victoria’s life and studying her diaries and letters, as well as, the writings of people surrounding her, it is evident that that her reign was ultimately led out of her own control and independently. Victoria did not see her …

Soldiers’ Motivations To Fight In World War Ii: The United States Army And The German Wehrmacht In The European Theatre, Anthony E. Hart
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
The European theatre of the Second World War has often been perceived as an ideological conflict driven by nationalism and patriotism. Ideology, patriotism, and nationalism may have been the motivations of leaders and citizens on the home front in Germany and the United States, but what about the men in the American and German armies fighting on the front lines? They may have been similarly motivated prior to their deployment, but what motivated soldiers in the U.S. Army and the Wehrmacht to continue fighting as the war dragged on and as they endured the horrors of combat? Were the motivational …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Educators in the 21st century are continuously discovering more engaging teaching tools to facilitate language learners. In today's increasingly developing visual world, film stands out from other traditional materials for its unique features, such as the visuality and authenticity. With appropriately designed activities, film could be a valuable resource in teaching English as a second language (TESOL) setting, and also a perfect tool for inspiring cross-cultural communication and promoting critical thinking skills.
However, research has shown that ESL teachers feel reluctant to use film as a significant component in their classrooms even though they have recognized and affirmed the benefit …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
A force sensor concept is presented where fluorescence signal is converted into force information via single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET). The basic design of the sensor is a ~100 base pair (bp) long double stranded DNA (dsDNA) that is restricted to a looped conformation by a nucleic acid secondary structure (NAS) that bridges its ends. The looped dsDNA generates a tension across the NAS and unfolds it when the tension is high enough. The FRET efficiency between donor and acceptor (D&A) fluorophores placed across the NAS reports on its folding state. Three dsDNA constructs with different lengths were bridged …

Elevated Temperature Progressive Damage And Failure Of Duplex Stainless Steel, Darren P. Luke
Elevated Temperature Progressive Damage And Failure Of Duplex Stainless Steel, Darren P. Luke
Civil Engineering ETDs
Ductile failure of metals has been the focus of research efforts within academia and industry for many years since it is tremendously important for understanding the failure of structures under extreme loading conditions. However, limited research has been dedicated to elevated temperature ductile failure, which is critical for evaluating catastrophic events such as industrial, structural or shipping vessel fires. A detailed investigation was conducted on the structural response of Duplex Stainless Steel at elevated temperatures. The temperature dependence of elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, and ductility was measured up to 1000°C and a continuum damage plasticity model was developed. …
Chemically Modified Monolayer Surfaces Influence Valvular Interstitial Cell Attachment And Differentiation For Heart Valve Tissue Engineering, Matthew N. Rush
Chemically Modified Monolayer Surfaces Influence Valvular Interstitial Cell Attachment And Differentiation For Heart Valve Tissue Engineering, Matthew N. Rush
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
As a cell mediated-process, valvular heart disease (VHD) results in significant morbidity and mortality world-wide. In the US alone, valvular heart disease VHD is estimated to affect 2.5% of the population with a disproportionate impact on an increasing elderly populous. It is well understood that the primary driver for valvular calcification is the differentiation of valvular interstitial cells (VICs) into an osteoblastic-like phenotype. However, the factors leading to the onset of osteoblastic-like VICs (obVICs) and resulting calcification are not fully understood and a more complete characterization of VIC differentiation and phenotypic change is required before treatment of valve disease or …

Tangibility And Symbolism Along Historic Highway 66 In Albuquerque, Donatella Davanzo
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation is an interdisciplinary exploration of Highway 66 heritage in order to understand what makes the historic American route distinctive in the contemporary capitalist scenario. Although deterioration of the road is evident, it continues to epitomize an historic American infrastructure as well as a fascinating conceptualization of the United States in the American imagination and in the international consciousness. Historical evidence indicates that the formation of Highway 66 largely depended on a conjuncture of political, cultural, and socio-economic factors under capitalism and institutional forces and ideological principles of Manifest Destiny and American Exceptionalism. As an incarnation of these relationships …
Stability Of A Spinning Triangle Tethered Spacecraft System In A Circular Orbit, Matthew James Heitstuman
Stability Of A Spinning Triangle Tethered Spacecraft System In A Circular Orbit, Matthew James Heitstuman
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Equations of motion are derived for a spinning triangle tethered spacecraft system and are used to analyze the stability of such systems. Floquet theory is applied to the linearized, periodic coefficient, equations of motion to analyze spin stability as a function of triangle geometry and the average spin rate of the satellite relative to the angular velocity of the spacecraft orbiting around a central body. The results of the Floquet analysis show that spin stability is achievable for many combinations of spacecraft geometry and spin rate. Spacecraft engineers or operators for a triangle-shaped tethered spacecraft can use this information for …
An Analysis Of Mixed-Layer Clay Minerals And Major Element Geochemical Trends In Middle-Upper Pennsylvanian-Aged Paleosols As A Proxy For Characterizing Basin-Wide Diagenetic Patterns And The Paleoenvironment Of The Illinois Basin, U.S.A., Julia A. Mcintosh
Earth Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Pennsylvanian-aged paleosols from four Illinois Basin (IB) cores were sampled to characterize clay mineralogy, paleosol morphology, and major element geochemistry. This data combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data from two other stratigraphically equivalent cores were used to better understand basin-wide diagenetic patterns. Paleosols unimpacted by diagenesis are considered reliable proxies for continued geochemical analyses and paleoclimate interpretations of middle to late Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian-Missourian) low-latitude environments.
Reichweite Ordering, as determined from XRD analysis ofprofiles, indicates that diagenesis impacted the deep interior of the basin and the southern portion of the basin. Further investigation of illitization mechanisms derived …

Doing Business In America: A Jewish History, Purdue University Press
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
American and Jewish historians have long shied away from the topic of Jews and business. Avoidance patterns grew in part from old, often negative stereotypes that linked Jews with money, and the perceived ease and regularity with which they found success with money, condemning Jews for their desires for wealth and their proclivities for turning a profit. A new, dauntless generation of historians, however, realizes that Jewish business has had and continues to have a profound impact on American culture and development, and patterns of immigrant Jewish exploration of business opportunities reflect internal, communal, Jewish-cultural structures and their relationship to …

Stevia rebaudiana and its diterpene glycosides are one of the main focuses of food companies interested in developing novel zero calorie sugar substitutes since the recognition of steviol glycosides as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Rebaudioside A, one of the major steviol glycosides of the leaves is more than 200 times sweeter than sucrose. However, its lingering aftertaste makes it less attractive as a table-top sweetener, despite its human health benefits. Herein, we report the purification of two novel tetra-glucopyranosyl diterpene glycosides 1 and 3 (rebaudioside A isomers) from a commercial Stevia …

Brand Loyalty In The Cruise Sector: Age Cohorts, Gender, And Travel Attributes As Key Moderators For Relationship Marketing Theory, Stephen Wen-Hung Wang, Maxwell Kuo-Hsuan Hsu, Angeline Close Scheinbaum, Feng-Ming Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Testing established theory in relationship marketing, we examine the impact of customer relationship management on customer satisfaction and brand loyalty in the context of the cruise industry. Individual differences such as age cohort (e.g., millennials, Gen X, baby boomers), gender, and consumers’ desired travel attributes are examined as moderators. Cruise vacation consumers at an international cruise harbor were approached to complete an in-person survey (n = 226). Empirical findings support extant theory in relationship marketing in that consumers’ perception of relationship investment raises satisfaction and, in turn, brand loyalty. Notably, when customer relationship investment is degenerated into a second order …

A Simplified Two-Switching-Based Model-Free Predictive Current Controller For An Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive System, Cheng-Kai Lin, Jen-Te Yu, Jyun-Ting Wang, Yen-Shin Lai, Hsing-Cheng Yu, Hao-Qun Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a simplified two-switching-based modelfree predictive current control (STSB-MFPCC) method as well as its application to interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive systems. Unlike existing model predictive current controller (MPCC) that uses 7 basic voltage vectors, STSB-MFPCC employs 19 synthesized ones, with each of which consisting of two basic voltage vectors. The new method does not require any information about the load parameters, back electromotive force, nor the system model. Compared to modelbased controllers, the proposed one has a distinctive and appealing nature in that it is much less sensitive to system parameter variations. A digital signal …
