Women's Perceptions On Feminism, Karina Ruiz Dec 2018

Women's Perceptions On Feminism, Karina Ruiz

Culture, Society, and Praxis

Throughout the progression of feminist waves, women have both united in solidarity and fractured in ideologies. A primary problem in today's feminist movement is the negative connotation that was left by the second wave which has alienated both women and men. The result is a feminism that is associated with extremism, negating the original intention of promoting equality. In this qualitative case study, I work with feminist and post-feminist theory to note how women perceive feminist in present day. Through survey questions and responses, I document the complexities of today's women who identify controversies on policing within the community and …

Cosmopolitanism In Silicon Valley: An Analysis Of Identity And Community, Gabriela Joseph Dec 2018

Cosmopolitanism In Silicon Valley: An Analysis Of Identity And Community, Gabriela Joseph

Culture, Society, and Praxis

The classic form of the nation-state is quickly disintegrating in favor of more fluid forms of cultural identity. Much of this is attributed to the impact of globalization. And in the wake of a hyper-connected global order, there is little doubt that cosmopolitanism is one the most relevant discourses of the coming century.

But how is this abstract notion grounded and operationalized? Who are the cosmopolitans? And what does cosmopolitanism look like?

This paper hopes to examine cosmopolitanism within the context of Silicon Valley by redefining what it means to be cosmopolitan, presenting the narratives of three individuals, and addressing …

The Relative Influence Of Instructor Training On Student Perceptions Of Online Courses And Instruction, Mary Bowne, Melissa Wuellner, Lisa Madsen, Jessica R. Meendering, John Howard

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Online learning opportunities have greatly increased in past years. Various studies have examined online courses and instructor practices but have not examined students’ perceptions of their online courses and online instructors who were offered a voluntary online certification program. Students who took online courses at a Midwestern university completed a survey related to their perceptions of their individual online course and instructor. Results showed that instructors who were certified received higher, positive ratings than instructors who were not certified. The certification program utilizes a “faculty as student’ model, where faculty take courses from a student learner perspective, to provide experiential …

Classrooms On The Frontier: Integrating Original Research Into Lectures, Matthew D. Meng, Lucas Rentschler Dec 2018

Classrooms On The Frontier: Integrating Original Research Into Lectures, Matthew D. Meng, Lucas Rentschler

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

The role of an academic is often spread across two main areas: researching and teaching. Although some argue that the scarcity of time, energy, and commitment precludes the ability to do both well, and are therefore substitutes, we argue that these roles can be complementary. That is, by incorporating original research into the classroom, several benefits can be gleaned by both faculty and students. We feel that if done correctly, a professor’s research and teaching can mutually benefit, as well. To illustrate and support this argument, we have included two specific examples of using original research to teach relevant concepts …

Educators, Question Your Level Of Cultural Responsiveness, China M. Jenkins

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Institutions of higher education are becoming increasingly diverse, while faculty of these institutions generally lack the diversity of the student population they teach. This imbalance necessitates educators implement culturally responsive teaching within their classrooms. The intent of this article is to guide educators in determining whether they practice and implement culturally responsive teaching within their classrooms. To make this examination, I present questions that educators should ask themselves to determine their level of cultural responsiveness. In response, educators should look to investigate their level of cultural competency, analyze social constructions that reflects growth in cultural responsiveness, and verify their transformation …

The Propagation Of Active-Passive Interfaces In Bacterial Swarms, Alison E. Patteson, Arvind Gopinath, Paulo E. Arratia Dec 2018

The Propagation Of Active-Passive Interfaces In Bacterial Swarms, Alison E. Patteson, Arvind Gopinath, Paulo E. Arratia

Physics - All Scholarship

Propagating interfaces are ubiquitous in nature, underlying instabilities and pattern formation in biology and material science. Physical principles governing interface growth are well understood in passive settings; however, our understanding of interfaces in active systems is still in its infancy. Here, we study the evolution of an active-passive interface using a model active matter system, bacterial swarms. We use ultra-violet light exposure to create compact domains of passive bacteria within Serratia marcescens swarms, thereby creating interfaces separating motile and immotile cells. Post-exposure, the boundary re-shapes and erodes due to self-emergent collective flows. We demonstrate that the active-passive boundary acts as …

University of Nebraska entomology professor Brett Ratcliffe, who also curates the Nebraska State Museum's beetle collection, shows elephant beetles, a member of the scarab beetle family, in his office in Nebraska Hall.

Unlike their namesakes, three species of scarab beetles newly described by University of Nebraska-Lincoln entomologist Brett Ratcliffe do not breathe fire. Or, at least, entomologists and field researchers haven't observed them doing so.

Nor do the scarabs have the thick, reptilian scales and leathery wings like the trio of …

Making Photographs Speak, Cameron T. Sauers, Benjamin M. Roy, James T. Goodman

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

It has often been said that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Making that picture spit out those mythical thousand words, as we can all attest, is no easy task. Over the course of the first half of the fall semester, the three of us were tasked with developing brief interpretive captions for two Civil War photographs each, with the end goal to display our work at the Civil War Institute’s 2019 Summer Conference. What initially appeared as a simple project quickly revealed itself to be a difficult, yet rewarding, challenge that taught us all important lessons concerning …

The American Dream As A Cultural Movement, Thomas W. Raskay Dec 2018

The American Dream As A Cultural Movement, Thomas W. Raskay

English Department: Traveling American Modernism (ENG 366, Fall 2018)

This piece investigates the relationship between the American Dream and automobility through a generational lens, assessing cultural change in each renewal of the American Dream. Comparing generations of Americans exploring and reforming cultural space reveals evidence of the American Dream as a tendency for generations to expand to new frontiers balanced by a duty to reform current social space. Automobility multiplies Americans’ options for exploration and explodes the rate at which modern generations engage with different spaces. Now that automobility is routine, Millenials have expanded to the new social space frontier in cyberspace, but a limitless frontier may disrupt the …

Preface: Earth Observation For Integrated Water And Basin Management: Challenges For Adaptation To A Changing Environment, María J. Polo, Maria P. González-Dugo, Christopher M.U. Neale

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Integrated river basin management involves a sound knowledge of water and land interactions, and impacts from and feedbacks to human activity. Remote sensing has been an efficient and increasingly promising means of gathering direct information of the Earth surface, as well as information on water and energy fluxes. The recent generation of high-resolution sensors offers a huge potential for monitoring, assessing, and modelling our changing environment in a context of uncertainty about how future climate conditions will affect the current water resource and basin management framework. Moreover, large amounts of data are now available posing a challenging opportunity to the …
