Lawyer As Soothsayer: Exploring The Important Role Of Outcome Prediction In The Practice Of Law, Mark K. Osbeck
Lawyer As Soothsayer: Exploring The Important Role Of Outcome Prediction In The Practice Of Law, Mark K. Osbeck
Articles
Outcome prediction has always been an important part of practicing law. Clients rely heavily on their attorneys to provide accurate assessments of the potential legal consequences they face when making important decisions (such as whether to accept a plea bargain, or risk a conviction on a much more serious offense at trial). And yet, notwithstanding its enormous importance to the practice of law (and notwithstanding the handsome legal fees it commands), outcome prediction in the law remains a very imprecise endeavor. The reason for this inaccuracy is that the three principal tools lawyers have traditionally relied on to facilitate outcome …
Nonlocal Symmetries For Time-Dependent Order Differential Equations, Andrei Ludu
Nonlocal Symmetries For Time-Dependent Order Differential Equations, Andrei Ludu
Publications
A new type of ordinary differential equation is introduced and discussed: time-dependent order ordinary differential equations. These equations are solved via fractional calculus by transforming them into Volterra integral equations of second kind with singular integrable kernel. The solutions of the time-dependent order differential equation represent deformations of the solutions of the classical (integer order) differential equations, mapping them into one-another as limiting cases. This equation can also move, remove or generate singularities without involving variable coefficients. An interesting symmetry of the solution in relation to the Riemann zeta function and Harmonic numbers is observed.

Review Of Double Taxation And The League Of Nations, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah
Reviews
Should we continue adapting the OECD Model to address tax challenges arising from digitalization of the economy or has the time come for radical reform? Sunita Jogarajan asked that question in her last study of the League of Nations' work on double taxation in the 1920s. The historical analysis provided in her book seems to suggest that the international tax regime will continue to inevitably evolve and the OECD Model can adapt. Her extensive archival research, conducted at the League of Nations Archives, the United Kingdom National Archives (London) and the Seligman Archives, Columbia University (New York), clearly demonstrates that …

2008 - Managing An Uncertain Future - Climate Change Adaptation Strategies For California's Water
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
This report recommends a number of adaptation strategies for California and local water managers to improve their capacity to handle change. Many of the strategies will also help adapt California's water resources to accommodate non-climate demands including a growing population, ecosystem restoration and greater flood protection. Several of the recommendations in this report are ready for immediate adoption, while others need additional public deliberation and development. Some can be implemented using existing resources and authority, while the majority will require new resources, sustained financial investment and significant collaborative effort.

The surgical management of paediatric patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis, mandibular retrognathia and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is challenging. We report a nine-year-old boy who presented to the Department of Oral Health, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2016 with complaints of limited mouth opening, loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. He was diagnosed with TMJ ankylosis, mandibular retrognathia and severe OSA. The patient initially underwent mandibular distraction and, subsequently, release of the TMJ ankylosis and rib graft reconstruction. The overall patient outcome was successful, with improvement in OSA-related symptoms, good facial symmetry and adequate mouth opening.

Primary gastric yolk tumours are extremely rare. We report a 52-year-old male who presented to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2017 after having undergone a gastrectomy abroad due to a suspected poorly-differentiated adenocarcinoma. The patient subsequently returned to Oman to receive chemotherapy. However, while undergoing chemotherapy, an abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a lobulated mesenteric mass. Microscopic examination of the resected lesion confirmed a diagnosis of a yolk sac tumour. The mass was diffusely positive for α-fetoprotein (AFP) and a gastric carcinoma stain was negative. Gastrectomy slides from the patient’s previous surgery were examined retrospectively. The morphology …

Foraging insect parasitoids use specific chemical cues to discriminate between host and non-host species. Several compounds have been identified in "host location and acceptance." However, nothing is known about the molecular variations in these compounds that could account for host-range differences between parasitoid species. In a previous study, it was shown that during the host-finding process, contact between the braconid Cotesia flavipes and its host is crucial, and that α-amylase of oral secretions from the host plays a key role for host acceptance and oviposition by the parasitoid. The present study sought to establish whether the variations in this enzyme …

Stabilized, Hybrid Solid-State Photocatalysts For Water Purification: Preparation, Properties And Performance Under Visible Light Irradiation, Karpagavalli Ramji
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Stabilized heterogeneous photocatalysts that use only solar light and air have been prepared and successfully employed to decontaminate water from organic pollutants. Organic dye pollutants present, for example in textile effluents, are one of the major sources of water pollution owing to their limited biodegradability, toxicity and potential carcinogenic risks. Before certifying water for public consumption, reuse in industries or for discharge in surface water the organic pollutants must be degraded, an effort that is energy intensive and currently requires complex methodologies. We report solid-state photocatalysts that use only visible light and air to treat wastewater. Perfluoroalkyl perfluoro-substituted zinc phthalocyanine …
Modeling Of Cantú Syndrome In Zebrafish, Soma Sekhara Singareddy
Modeling Of Cantú Syndrome In Zebrafish, Soma Sekhara Singareddy
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Although rare, Cantú syndrome (CS) is a debilitating syndrome without any specific therapy, caused by gain-of-function (GOF) mutations in KCNJ8 and ABCC9 genes that encode ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels. To better understand the link between molecular dysfunction and the complex pathophysiology, animal models that can rigorously mirror human CS are essential. Using ABCC9-mutated zebrafish, which can provide significant advantages over mice as an appropriate vertebrate model, GOF has been demonstrated at a cellular level in the ventricular cardiomyocytes. This also marks the first-known characterization of KATP currents in teleost hearts. In addition, sulfonylurea sensitivities of the channels have been …

Shenzhen’S Urban Villages: Dialogic Cultural Landscapes And Resilient Rituals, Z Latham, R Brown
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Rapid urbanisation is drastically reshaping our environment, destabilising traditional connections to place and notions of community, and with these the relationship between place and identity. In this context, how do we make sense of such change and how do we orient ourselves when prior notions of place and iden- tity are disrupted or lost? To address such questions this paper will draw upon Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of di- alogism, and through themes of mutuality, simultaneity, malleability and mobility examine concepts of cultural landscape, nature and ritual. To pursue our study of this condition we have sited ourselves in the dramatically …

Physicochemical And Ecotoxicological Assessment Of Biochar For Environmental Application, Maria Guillermina Cantou
Physicochemical And Ecotoxicological Assessment Of Biochar For Environmental Application, Maria Guillermina Cantou
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Multiple benefits of biochar conversion and utilization, including soil carbon sequestration and environmental remediation, have been proposed by researchers. Biochar may be produced from a wide array of feedstocks and pyrolytic process conditions. This influences the final biochar composition, which includes the presence of potential pollutants that could ultimately result in detrimental environmental impacts. The major purpose of this research was to improve our understanding of potential unintended effects of biochar addition to the environment either as a potential source of toxicity towards organisms or as a material influencing availabilities of other soil contaminants. Biochars were produced from ten different …

Providing Contextual Information For Multi-Party Chats, Sammy El Ghazzal, Sandro Feuz
Defensive Publications Series
It can be difficult for the individual group members of a multi-party chat to determine the relationships that connect the different members. Owing to this unfamiliarity, individuals can feel unsure and hesitant to express themselves freely in the multi-party chat. Such restraint can limit the topics and style of chat messages. On the other hand, a lack of restraint can be deemed as inappropriate or offensive. This disclosure describes mechanisms that provide contextual information about connections among the members of an ad-hoc multi-party chat group. With permission of the group members, the techniques of this disclosure are applied to determine …

Patient Deception In Health Care: Physical Therapy Education, Beliefs, And Attitudes, Drew A. Curtis, Han-Hung Huang, Kendra L. Nicks
International Journal of Health Sciences Education
A good professional-patient relationship is important to clinical practice, which may be compromised by deception. Deception research in physical therapy is scant. The current study investigated how the topic of patient deception is addressed in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) educational curriculum, explore DPT students’ beliefs about deception and attitudes toward patient deception, and examine the effects of a pedagogical intervention on DPT students’ beliefs about deception and attitudes toward patient deception. The first objective was pursued by a descriptive survey sent to 217 DPT programs in the US. The second and third objectives were achieved by one-group pretest-posttest design …
