An Application Of Deep-Learning To Understand Human Perception Of Art, Sanjana Kapisthalam
Theses
Eye movement patterns are known to differ when looking at stimuli given a different task, but less is known about how these patterns change as a function of expertise. When a particular visual pattern is viewed, a particular sequence of eye movements are executed and this sequence is defined as scanpath. In this work we made an attempt to answer the question, “Do art novices and experts look at paintings differently?” If they do, we should be able to discriminate between the two groups using machine learning applied to their scanpaths. This can be done using algorithms for Multi-Fixation Pattern …
Development And Characterization Of Novel Iii-V Materials For High Efficiency Photovoltaics, Zachary Shible Bittner
Development And Characterization Of Novel Iii-V Materials For High Efficiency Photovoltaics, Zachary Shible Bittner
Theses
Photovoltaics (PV) are an enabling technology in the field of aerospace, allowing satellites to operate far beyond the technological limitations of chemical batteries by providing a constant power source. However, launch costs and payload volume constraints result in a demand for the highest possible mass and volume specific power generation capability, a proxy for which is device power conversion efficiency. Enhancing the efficiency of III-V PV devices beyond the single-junction Shockley Queisser (SQ) limit has been a driving goal in PV development. Two competing loss mechanisms are thermalization, where photon energy in excess of the absorbing material’s bandgap is lost …

Rheumatoid Meningitis Sine Arthritis., Cathy Lee-Ching, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Matthew Berk, Chantel Park
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Rheumatoid meningitis is a rare and very serious extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis. We present a case of a 7()year-old female with no history of arthritis who developed stroke-like symptoms, seizures, psychosis and compulsive behavior. Serial brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) over four months demonstrated progressive interhemispheric meningeal thickening. She had mild lymphocytic pleocytosis on the cerebrospinal fluid analysis and serum anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies resulted positive in high titers. She underwent a brain biopsy showing necrotizing granulomas consistent with rheumatoid meningitis. Her symptoms resolved with treatment with glucocorticoids and cyclophosphamide. She has not been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis even …

Optimizing A Method For Dna Recovery While Preserving Latent Prints On Paper, Niti Dalal
Student Theses
Paper evidence is commonly encountered in cases of kidnapping, threatening letters, extortion, and bank robbery, and the optimal workflow between latent print processing and DNA collection is of interest to the forensic community. The overall aim of this project was to achieve optimal amounts of DNA for typing without destroying the fingerprint. The first study compared two collection techniques—tape-lifting by Scotch Removable Poster Tape and dry swabbing with FLOQSwabs— using prints deposited in defined locations. Samples were processed for DNA and developed with 1,2-indanedione. The second aim was to determine if visualizing print locations with fingerprint powder prior to DNA …

The 9/11 attacks in 2001 thrust American Muslims into the spotlight, where they were bombarded with suspicion. Their lives, habits, and religion were intensely scrutinized by the government and their fellow Americans. Yet, they were also portrayed in the media in a simplistic and stereotyped manner. Millennial Muslim Americans – who came of age after the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent rise of Islamophobia in the U.S – have known no other America.

Dosage compensation of the mammalian X chromosome (X) was proposed by Susumu Ohno as a mechanism wherein the inactivation of one X in females would lead to doubling the expression of the other. This would resolve the dosage imbalance between eutherian females (XX) versus male (XY) and between a single active X versus autosome pairs (A). Expression ratio of X- and A-linked genes has been relatively well studied in humans and mice, despite controversial results over the existence of upregulation of X-linked genes. Here we report the first comprehensive test of Ohno’s hypothesis in bovine preattachment embryos, germline, and somatic …

2003 - Deep Aquifer Investigation - Hydrogeologic Data Inventory, Review, Interpretation And Implications
Miscellaneous Monterey and San Luis Obispo County Documents and Reports
The “deep aquifer” designation derives from the history of water resource development in Monterey County. Advancing seawater intrusion, first, in the 180-foot aquifer, and subsequently in the 400-foot aquifer, forced ground water users to progressively driller deeper to find fresh water. The first deep aquifer water well was drilled in 1976. In order to develop an improved understanding of the regional ground water resource, this technical memorandum attempts to integrate all available data on the aquifer systems underlying the 180- and 400-foot aquifers of the Salinas Valley. The available data set for the deep aquifer is scanty. These data are …

Measuring Job-Fit And Career Paths Of Distance Learning Lirbrarians, Jennifer J. Rundels, Anne M. Casey
Measuring Person-Job Fit and Career Paths of Distance Learning Librarians
While person-job fit has been used to determine satisfaction in many professions, no research has been done among distance learning (DL) librarians. This study explores that concept by investigating person-job fit among librarians with primary DL responsibility compared to librarians with partial DL responsibility and whether a common career path exists among the two groups. Responses appear to suggest that DL librarians perceive a strong compatibility between their needs and desires and their jobs while both groups indicate that career advancement has been the primary factor concerning career path decisions.
This collection hosts the data associated with the submission of …

Lactate Dehydrogenase And Β-Glucuronidase As Salivary Biochemical Markers Of Periodontitis Among Smokers And Non-Smokers, Syed A. Ali, Ravi L. Telgi, Amit Tantry, Irfan Q., Abdul Aleem
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: This study aimed to establish lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and β-glucuronidase as salivary biomarkers of periodontitis among smokers and non-smokers. Methods: This cross-sectional case-control study was conducted at the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India, between January and June 2017. A total of 200 participants were divided into four groups based on their periodontal and smoking statuses. Unstimulated mixed saliva samples were collected to estimate LDH and β-glucuronidase levels. In addition, total protein was estimated using Lowry’s method. Results: There was a significant increase in enzyme activity in the periodontitis groups compared to the non-periodontitis groups (P <0.001). However, significantly lower enzyme activity was observed among smokers, irrespective of periodontal status (P <0.001). Nevertheless, a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated the diagnostic potential of both enzymes to be fair-to-excellent. Conclusion: Although smoking was found to significantly alter enzyme activity, LDH and β-glucuronidase were reliable salivary biomarkers of periodontitis among both smokers and non-smokers.

Sources And Clinical Applications Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells: State-Of-The-Art Review, Roberto Berebichez-Fridman, Pablo R. Montero-Olvera
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
First discovered by Friedenstein in 1976, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells found throughout the body that share a fixed set of characteristics. Discovered initially in the bone marrow, this cell source is considered the gold standard for clinical research, although various other sources—including adipose tissue, dental pulp, mobilised peripheral blood and birth-derived tissues—have since been identified. Although similar, MSCs derived from different sources possess distinct characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, including their differentiation potential and proliferation capacity, which influence their applicability. Hence, they may be used for specific clinical applications in the fields of regenerative medicine and tissue …

Electron bifurcation plays a key role in anaerobic energy metabolism, but it is a relatively new discovery, and only limited mechanistic information is available on the diverse enzymes that employ it. Herein, we focused on the bifurcating electron transfer flavoprotein (ETF) from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrobaculum aerophilum. The EtfABCX enzyme complex couples NADH oxidation to the endergonic reduction of ferredoxin and exergonic reduction of menaquinone. We developed a model for the enzyme structure by using nondenaturing MS, cross-linking, and homology modeling in which EtfA, -B, and -C each contained FAD, whereas EtfX contained two [4Fe-4S] clusters. On the basis …

The literature on neighborhoods and child obesity links contextual conditions to risk, assuming that if place matters, it matters in a similar way for everyone in those places. We explore the extent to which distinctive neighborhood types give rise to social patterning that produces variation in the odds of child obesity. We leverage geocoded electronic medical records for a diverse sample of over 135,000 children aged 2 to 12 and latent profile modeling to characterize places into distinctive neighborhood contexts. Multilevel models with cross-level interactions between neighborhood type and family socioeconomic standing (SES) reveal that children with different SES, but …
