Introduction To The Protection Of Non-Traditional Trademarks: Critical Perspectives, Irene Calboli
Faculty Scholarship
During the past decades, the domain of trademark law and the scope of trademark protection have been expanded significantly. The flexible application of prerequisites for registration has paved the way for the recognition of a wide variety of signs as subject matter eligible for trademark protection. This includes single colors, shapes, sounds, smells, video clips, holograms, and even gestures. However, this expansion of the scope of trademark protection has been accompanied only by a partial expansion of the grounds for refusal relating to these registrations and the creation of defenses that permit unauthorized use in the interest of freedom of …

TAR-DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) proteinopathy is a common brain pathology in elderly persons, but much remains to be learned about this high-morbidity condition. Published stage-based systems for operationalizing disease severity rely on the involvement (presence/absence) of pathology in specific anatomic regions. To examine the comorbidities associated with TDP-43 pathology in aged individuals, we studied data from the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center (NACC) Neuropathology Data Set. Data were analyzed from 929 included subjects with available TDP-43 pathology information, sourced from 27 different American Alzheimer’s Disease Centers (ADCs). Cases with relatively unusual diseases including autopsy-proven frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD-TDP or FTLD-tau) …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Amyloidosis is a disorder characterised by the extracellular deposition of amyloid, a fibrillary protein, in various organs such as the lungs. Pulmonary nodular amyloidosis can mimic other lung conditions that present with pulmonary nodules, such as metastasis, sarcoidosis and hyalinising granuloma. We report a 60-year-old man who presented to the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2017 with a history of shortness of breath upon exertion, orthopnoea and bilateral lower limb swelling. A chest X-ray showed bilateral nodular opacities. Enhanced chest computed tomography revealed bilateral pulmonary nodules with a predominantly perilymphatic and subpleural distribution, giving the impression of a neoplastic nodule. …

Noninvasive Ventilation And High-Flow Nasal Cannulae Therapy For Children With Acute Respiratory Failure: An Overview, Khaloud S. Al-Mukhaini, Najwa M. Al-Rahbi
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) refers to the use of techniques to deliver artificial respiration to the lungs without the need for endotracheal intubation. As NIV has proven beneficial in comparison to invasive mechanical ventilation, it has become the optimal modality for initial respiratory support among children in respiratory distress. High-flow nasal cannulae (HFNC) therapy is a relatively new NIV modality and is used for similar indications. This review discusses the usefulness and applications of conventional NIV in comparison to HFNC.
