The squat is a functional, compound and multi-joint exercise that targets several muscles of the lower body and is widely used in both athletics and many exercise programs. This exercise has been the subject of many studies, comparing different squat variations and examining how external gear, such as squat suits and knee wraps impact the exercise. This critical interpretive study explores the relationship between public policy and visual culture. Drawing from five areas of research literature on (1) policy feedback theory, (2) the spectacle, (3) art and visual culture, (4) Black feminist theory, (5) and critical philosophies of resistance, images of contemporary antiracist activism are conceptualized as a form of policy feedback. School librarians occupy a unique position to offer supports for first year teachers to build resilience, reduce burnout, and ensure retention. The researcher used the psychology theory of resilience to develop the Continuum of Care model which initiates in mentoring and moves toward a collaborative partnership. Fifteen school librarians in one urban district recruited 26 new teachers in their schools to form the treatment group. All new teachers in the district were surveyed to establish their initial level of resilience and collect demographics. The derivative hedging research has looked at why firms and how firms hedge and if it increases value for their shareholders. In this dissertation we investigate the relation between CEO risk preferences and ability and whether if affects their hedging decisions and firm value.

Pragmatism And Pluralism: A Moral Foundation For Stakeholder Theory In The 21st Century, Paul C. Godfrey, Ben William Lewis

Donaldson and Preston (1995) defined the three pillars of stakeholder as descriptive, instrumental, and normative. Because of their close alignment between the instrumental and normative pillars and the moral philosophies of utilitarianism and deontology, the latter became the default moral foundations of stakeholder theory. In this chapter, we argue that the moral foundation of the descriptive pillar, pragmatism, provides a moral foundation for twenty-first century stakeholder theory. As we show, pragmatism and its close cousin pluralism fits a stakeholder theory concerned with the descriptive questions that characterize current work in stakeholder theory. Background: Benefits of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine programs have been linked to the vaccine’s ability to disrupt nasopharyngeal carriage and transmission. The 10-valent pneumococcal vaccine (PCV10) was included in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in Sindh, Pakistan in February 2013. This study was carried out immediately before PCV10 introduction to establish baseline pneumococcal carriage and prevalent serotypes in young children and to determine if carriage differed in urban and rural communities.

BACKGROUND: Access to endovascular therapy (ET) in cases of acute ischemic stroke may be limited, and rapid transfer of eligible patients to hospitals with endovascular capability is needed.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal timing of diagnostic CT angiography to confirm large vessel occlusion (LVO).

METHODS: Of 57 emergency department transfers to Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) for possible ET from January 2015 through March 2016, 39 (68%) underwent ET, among whom 22 (56%) had CT angiography before transfer and 17 (44%) had CT angiography on arrival. BACKGROUND: Outcomes after stroke in those with diabetes are not well characterized, especially by sex and age. We sought to calculate the sex- and age-specific risk of cardiovascular outcomes after ischemic stroke among those with diabetes.

METHODS: Using population-based demographic and administrative health-care databases in Ontario, Canada, all patients with diabetes hospitalized with index ischemic stroke between April 1, 2002, and March 31, 2012, were followed for death, stroke, and myocardial infarction (MI). The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Fine-Gray competing risk models estimated hazards of outcomes by sex and age, unadjusted and adjusted for demographics and vascular risk factors.

Polyneuropathy with immunoglobulin M (IgM) monoclonal gammopathy is the most common paraproteinemic neuropathy, comprising a clinicopathologically and immunologically distinct entity. The clinical spectrum spans from distal paresthesias and mild gait imbalance to more severe sensory ataxia, with falls and a varying degree of distal sensorimotor deficits. In approximately 75% of patients, the monoclonal IgM immunoreacts with myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) and sulfoglucuronyl glycosphingolipid (SGPG), or other peripheral nerve glycolipids that serve as antigens. These antibodies are considered pathogenic because IgM and complement are deposited on the myelin sheath, splitting the myelin lamellae, while adoptive transfer of patients' IgM into susceptible host …

A popular theme among patriots is to celebrate America’s special virtues, which distinguish it radically from European models. Ganesh Sitaraman tells us that political constitutions have generally been designed to prevent socially destabilizing class warfare between the rich, who seek greater domination, and the poor, who would like to redistribute the former’s wealth. America’s Constitution is distinctive because it was consciously designed for a society in which the middle class is large enough to preserve social stability. That is why Sitaraman calls it a “middle-class constitution.”

Adam Winkler makes an important contribution to the great body of academic work on corporations in American life. He concentrates on a small corner of the larger topic. He traces only the development of corporate “rights,” and he describes, but does not critique, what he uncovers. There is much to learn from this fine book. I want to applaud Winkler’s primary revelation—namely, that corporate rights are a creation of the courts, especially the Supreme Court.1 Then I want to flag what Winkler (I think) would readily acknowledge: corporate rights are not the whole of the corporate story.

The obliteration of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean and collision of the microplates along the northern part of Turkey led to the development of the İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone (IAESZ). After the collision of Pontides with the Central-Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC) in the Paleocene, a new phase of extension and volcanism concomitantly developed along the northern (Almus; Pontides) and southern (Yıldızeli; CACC) sides and along the IAESZ during the Middle Eocene time interval. The first products of the Middle Eocene volcanism in these areas are represented by calc-alkaline to alkaline (basic-intermediate) volcanic and volcanoclastic units together with late-stage trachytic dikes, plugs, and stocks. …

Oligo-Miocene clay outcrops on the European side (west and northwest part) of İstanbul were analysed. Formerly, a landfill and sanitary landfill were built on the clay. The Aksu Basin in southern Turkey is dominantly represented by an alluvial fan and five fan deltas (FDs) developed along the tectonically controlled margins of the basin during the Miocene. Four alternating compressional and tensional tectonic phases have influenced the basin since its formation. Strong tectonic movements caused high sedimentation rates and progradation of large debris-flow and mass-flow dominated FDs. Here we describe two FDs (the Karadağ and Kargı FDs) in detail. The study aims to reconstruct the crystalline parent rock assemblages of the Eocene Strihovce Formation (Krynica Unit) and Mrazovce Member (Raca Unit) deposits, based on the heavy mineral suites, their corrosive features, geochemistry of garnet and tourmaline, zircon cathodoluminescence (CL) images, and exotic pebble composition. Both units are an integral part of the Magura Nappe belonging to the Flysch Belt (Outer Western Carpathians). Corrosion signs observable on heavy minerals point to different burial conditions and/or diverse sources. The Eastern Pontides were located at the southern active margin of Laurasia during Mesozoic time. Jurassic volcaniclastic sediments and volcanic rocks of the Pontides represent products of the arc magmatism above a north-dipping subduction zone. Despite the wide distribution of the Jurassic volcaniclastic/volcanic succession, the precise age of the Jurassic volcaniclastic sequence and that of the synsedimentary magmatism are poorly constrained. Here we present U-Pb detrital zircon ages from two Jurassic sandstones belonging to the Şenköy Formation of the Eastern Pontides. The East Anatolian Fault (EAF) is a morphologically distinct and seismically active left-lateral strike-slip fault that extends for ~400 km and forms the Arabian/Anatolian plate boundary in southeastern Turkey. The EAF together with its conjugate fault, the North Anatolian Fault, help accommodate the westward escape of the Anatolian plate from the Arabian/Eurasian collision zone. The mollusc faunas from Pliocene deposits of the Hatay-İskenderun region were investigated at nine localities and complemented with three localities from earlier studies. The Pliocene units were deposited in three adjacent subbasins, Hatay-Samandağ (HS), Altınözü-Babatorun (AB), and İskenderun-Arsuz (İA); the first two are also known as the Hatay Graben. Basin configurations and shape, environmental evolution, and faunal compositions were affected by differential tectonic histories since the Late Miocene. Quartz cements of the quartz arenitic sandstones from the Chalky Nasara and Ora sections of the (Devonian-Carboniferous) Ora Formation in northern Iraq have been studied. A combination of hot cathodoluminescence, LA-ICP-MS, and fluid inclusion microthermometry revealed three syntaxial quartz cement generations (Q1, Q2, and Q3). The early Q1 cementation has gray to slightly brown luminescences, postdated compaction, and reduced intergranular porosity associated with illite formed during eogenesis. Q2 is characterized by dark brown luminescence overgrowths and is more voluminous in the thinly bedded sandstones than in the thickly bedded sandstones filling most of the remaining pore space during mesogenesis. Al-rich spinels were rarely reported compared to Cr-spinels, which were mostly observed in ophiolitic rocks. Pleonaste [(Mg, Fe2+)Al2O4], which is an Al-rich spinel, was observed in the ophiolitic mafic-ultramafic rocks tectonically located in the Early Cretaceous accretionary complex, at the eastern part of the Armutlu peninsula, NW Turkey. The ophiolitic mafic-ultramafic rocks have cumulate character, and most of them are represented by peridotite and pyroxenite. Pleonaste was observed in pyroxenites and gabbros of the ophiolitic rocks. Pyroxenites consist mainly of clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + amphibole ± olivine + spinel. The time interval of the sedimentation in the southern Hellenic Thrace Basin (Lemnos Island, northeast Aegean Sea) was studied, based on the qualitative analysis of calcareous nannoplankton and quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminifera. The samples were collected from 4 different stratigraphic sections (Ifestia, Panagia, Kaspaka, and Kaminia). The biostratigraphic analyses on both calcareous nannoplankton and planktonic foraminifera reveal an age of Late Eocene-Early Oligocene (Priabonian-Rupelian). In particular, the Eocene-Oligocene boundary is recorded at the lower part of the turbiditic system, in the Ifestia section. The Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Dehsard mafic volcanic rocks crop out in the southeastern Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone (SSZ), composed primarily of basalts and basaltic andesite with subordinate dolerite. They are influenced to some degree by hydrothermal alteration under zeolite-greenschist facies. Using fairly immobile trace elements, the mafic volcanic rocks show subalkaline (tholeiitic) affinities. They commonly have similar designs with somewhat strong enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depletion in high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Ta, Ti) and nearly flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns. The Tavşanlı Zone (TZ) is a high-pressure/low-temperature metamorphic belt representing subduction and exhumation between the Sakarya Zone and the Afyon-Bolkardağ Zone in western Anatolia. This paper provides new and precise geological data including whole-rock and mineral chemistry, phengite 40Ar/39Ar ages, zircon laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb, and apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronological information for a region of the Sivrihisar metamorphic complex that has been less studied than other regions of the TZ. Medium- and high-K calc-alkaline magmatism of the Shurab (southeast Qom city) and Garmsar (northwest Garmsar city) areas occurred within the Lower Red Formation in the Central Basin behind the Urumieh-Dokthar Magmatic Arc. In terms of whole-rock geochemical analyses and in agreement with the petrographic features, all representative samples of the Shurab area are classified into three groups: group 1 with mainly intergranular texture comprises basalt/trachybasalt, while groups 2 and 3 with trachytic and porphyritic textures, respectively, have basaltic trachyandesite composition. The Bouguer gravity anomaly map of Turkey shows relatively high values around the Çumra region, Konya. This area has a flat topography and a thick cover of sediments despite being seated on a suture zone formed between Anatolide and Tauride Platforms after the Neo-Tethys Ocean closed. High Bouguer gravity anomalies indicate an anomalous mass excess buried under the flat topography. In the present study, the gravity anomaly is studied using several analysis and processing methods in order to understand and infer its possible sources.
