In the title compound, [Fe(C25H24O2P)(C18H15P)(CO)2]PF6, the Fe atom adopts a square-based pyramidal coordination geometry with the carbonyl groups and the two C=C bonds of the diene defining the basal sites and the phosphane ligand the apical position. The diene ligand has an E,E geometry, with the phosphonium fragment pointed away from the Fe atom. The crystal structure displays C—H⋯F and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonding. The PF6− anion is rotationally disordered over four orientations.

Recent Progress In The Synthesis Of Six-Membered Aminocyclitols (2008-2017), William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Aminocyclitols are of interest as glucosidase inhibitors, as probes for the study of pseudoglycosyltransferases, and as potential therapeutics for the treatment of Gaucher’s disease. The synthesis of these targets was reviewed in early 2008, and the aim of this review is to cover material relevant to the synthesis of aminocyclitols since that time. While not a focus of this review, biological evaluation of compounds will be presented where it is recorded in the literature.

Mazanet's 1693 "Report To The Viceroy:" The Role Of Alterity, Bare Life, And Agency In The Attitude Of A Spanish Friar Against Texas Amerindians, Pedro Cebollero Jan 2018

Mazanet's 1693 "Report To The Viceroy:" The Role Of Alterity, Bare Life, And Agency In The Attitude Of A Spanish Friar Against Texas Amerindians, Pedro Cebollero

The Coastal Review

This study evaluates Spanish missionary Damián Mazanet’s beliefs and attitudes about the Texas Indians expressed in a 1693 letter. In order to control the Amerindians, Mazanet represents them as beings with bare life, which gives him permission to implement biopolitical tactics such as the reorganization of Indian populations around the mission, their removal from their own lands, and their conversion by force. In spite of this, the examination of textual silences in the letter shows such Amerindians as agents who actually refuse to be subjected by the Spanish friars and soldiers.

La Instantánea De Un Desastre "Histórico:" El Reclamo Por La Justicia Y La Reválida De La Identidad En "Cabo Trafalgar" De Arturo-Pérez Reverte, Agustín Martínez-Samos

The Coastal Review

In Cabo Trafalgar (2004) by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, I examine the turbulent historical fabric of the Battle of Trafalgar as a “harmful organic entity,” capable of altering the distinct circumstances of the peripheral subject. I observe how the narrative voice denotes social anxiety and loneliness on those whose meaning in the geopolitical context of that era is a mere anecdote, while presenting the emerging tensions between individual identity and collective uncertainty. I present how the actions of professional seamen and pressmen create a rectifier methodology that challenges the historical oblivion experienced by the participants in this tragic battle. Finally, I note …

Memory, Metatheater, And Intertextuality In "La Madrugada" By Juan Tovar, Brian T. Chandler Jan 2018

Memory, Metatheater, And Intertextuality In "La Madrugada" By Juan Tovar, Brian T. Chandler

The Coastal Review

This work explores the concepts of temporality, memory and history in the play La madrugada by Juan Tovar presented through the use of metatheatricality and intertextuality with works such as Pedro Páramo and various historical corridos. The processes through which official history is constructed are shown in contrast with collective memory that endures in the corrido, the “authentic” voice of the people, suggesting that the only possibility for redemption is found in memory, a space where one can learn from history to rectify the mistakes of the past whose impact in politics and society is felt to this …

To Frame Or Not To Frame: Improving Goal Setting, Alexander J. Dontre Jan 2018

To Frame Or Not To Frame: Improving Goal Setting, Alexander J. Dontre

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Goal setting is a fundamental mechanism used to enhance performance and to promote individual and organizational achievement. Accordingly, developing ways to improve goal effectiveness can be a valuable endeavor. This project proposes that the way in which goals are framed should be positively correlated with success rates. New Year's resolutions were determined to be framed either positively or negatively, and then compared to the self-reported success rates. The study results confirmed that goals with positive framing resulted in higher success rates than did goals with negative framing.

That Seems Made Up: Deep Learning Classifiers For Fiction & Non Fiction Book Reviews, Clement Manger Jan 2018

That Seems Made Up: Deep Learning Classifiers For Fiction & Non Fiction Book Reviews, Clement Manger

Dissertations

The thesis aims to take the first step towards automated extraction of the information found in book reviews, by using machine learning tools to assign a label of fiction or non fiction to the text. The thesis makes use of neural networks and performs experiments around architecture, hyper-parameters and text processing from which an optimized model is produced. The thesis enjoys certain successes; it was possible to match the state of the art achieved by (Kim, 2014) and computation was sped up considerably from the default to the optimized model by 13.8 seconds per 50 steps. Further it is confirmed …

Short-Term Load Forecasting Of Natural Gas With Deep Neural Network Regression, Gregory Merkel, Richard J. Povinelli, Ronald H. Brown

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Deep neural networks are proposed for short-term natural gas load forecasting. Deep learning has proven to be a powerful tool for many classification problems seeing significant use in machine learning fields such as image recognition and speech processing. We provide an overview of natural gas forecasting. Next, the deep learning method, contrastive divergence is explained. We compare our proposed deep neural network method to a linear regression model and a traditional artificial neural network on 62 operating areas, each of which has at least 10 years of data. The proposed deep network outperforms traditional artificial neural networks by 9.83% weighted …

Deep Convolutional Particle Filter With Adaptive Correlation Maps For Visual Tracking, Reza Jilil Mozhdehi, Yevgeniy Vladimirovich Reznichenko, Abubakar Siddique, Henry P. Medeiros Jan 2018

Deep Convolutional Particle Filter With Adaptive Correlation Maps For Visual Tracking, Reza Jilil Mozhdehi, Yevgeniy Vladimirovich Reznichenko, Abubakar Siddique, Henry P. Medeiros

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The robustness of the visual trackers based on the correlation maps generated from convolutional neural networks can be substantially improved if these maps are used to employed in conjunction with a particle filter. In this article, we present a particle filter that estimates the target size as well as the target position and that utilizes a new adaptive correlation filter to account for potential errors in the model generation. Thus, instead of generating one model which is highly dependent on the estimated target position and size, we generate a variable number of target models based on high likelihood particles, which …

Detection And Quantification Of Multi-Analyte Mixtures Using A Single Sensor And Multi-Stage Data-Weighted Rlse, Karthick Sothivelr, Florian Bender, Fabien Josse, Edwin E. Yaz, Antonio J. Ricco

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This work reports the development and experimental verification of a sensor signal processing technique for online identification and quantification of aqueous mixtures of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX) and 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene (TMB) at ppb concentrations using time-dependent frequency responses from a single polymer-coated shear-horizontal surface acoustic wave sensor. Signal processing based on multi-stage exponentially weighted recursive leastsquares estimation (EW-RLSE) is utilized for estimating the concentrations of the analytes in the mixture that are most likely to have produced a given sensor response. The initial stages of EW-RLSE are used to eliminate analyte(s) that are erroneously identified as present in …

Stochastic Search Methods For Mobile Manipulators, Amoako-Frimpong Samuel Yaw, Matthew Messina, Henry P. Medeiros, Jeremy Marvel, Roger Bostelman Jan 2018

Stochastic Search Methods For Mobile Manipulators, Amoako-Frimpong Samuel Yaw, Matthew Messina, Henry P. Medeiros, Jeremy Marvel, Roger Bostelman

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Mobile manipulators are a potential solution to the increasing need for additional flexibility and mobility in industrial applications. However, they tend to lack the accuracy and precision achieved by fixed manipulators, especially in scenarios where both the manipulator and the autonomous vehicle move simultaneously. This paper analyzes the problem of dynamically evaluating the positioning error of mobile manipulators. In particular, it investigates the use of Bayesian methods to predict the position of the end-effector in the presence of uncertainty propagated from the mobile platform. The precision of the mobile manipulator is evaluated through its ability to intercept retroreflective markers using …

Prelude To Genocide: Arusha, Rwanda, And The Failure Of Diplomacy, David Rawson Jan 2018

Prelude To Genocide: Arusha, Rwanda, And The Failure Of Diplomacy, David Rawson

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

As the initial US observer, David Rawson participated in the 1993 Rwandan peace talks at Arusha, Tanzania. Later, he served as US ambassador to Rwanda during the last months of the doomed effort to make them hold. Despite the intervention of concerned states in establishing a peace process and the presence of an international mission, UNAMIR, the promise of the Arusha Peace Accords could not be realized. Instead, the downing of Rwandan president Habyarimana’s plane in April 1994 rekindled the civil war and opened the door to genocide.

In Prelude to Genocide, Rawson draws on declassified documents and his own …

Connecting Continents: Archaeology And History In The Indian Ocean World, Krish Seetah Jan 2018

Connecting Continents: Archaeology And History In The Indian Ocean World, Krish Seetah

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In recent decades, the vast and culturally diverse Indian Ocean region has increasingly attracted the attention of anthropologists, historians, political scientists, sociologists, and other researchers. Largely missing from this growing body of scholarship, however, are significant contributions by archaeologists and consciously interdisciplinary approaches to studying the region’s past and present.

Connecting Continents addresses two important issues: how best to promote collaborative research on the Indian Ocean world, and how to shape the research agenda for a region that has only recently begun to attract serious interest from historical archaeologists. The archaeologists, historians, and other scholars who have contributed to this …

Foreign Intervention In Africa After The Cold War: Sovereignty, Responsibility, And The War On Terror, Elizabeth Schmidt Jan 2018

Foreign Intervention In Africa After The Cold War: Sovereignty, Responsibility, And The War On Terror, Elizabeth Schmidt

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In Foreign Intervention in Africa after the Cold War—interdisciplinary in approach and intended for nonspecialists—Elizabeth Schmidt provides a new framework for thinking about foreign political and military intervention in Africa, its purposes, and its consequences. She focuses on the quarter century following the Cold War (1991–2017), when neighboring states and subregional, regional, and global organizations and networks joined extracontinental powers in support of diverse forces in the war-making and peace-building processes. During this period, two rationales were used to justify intervention: a response to instability, with the corollary of responsibility to protect, and the war on terror.

Often overlooked …

Civil War Congress And The Creation Of Modern America: A Revolution On The Home Front, Paul Finkelman, Donald R. Kennon Jan 2018

Civil War Congress And The Creation Of Modern America: A Revolution On The Home Front, Paul Finkelman, Donald R. Kennon

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Most literature on the Civil War focuses on soldiers, battles, and politics. But for every soldier in the United States Army, there were nine civilians at home. The war affected those left on the home front in many ways. Westward expansion and land ownership increased. The draft disrupted families while a shortage of male workers created opportunities for women that were previously unknown.

The war also enlarged the national government in ways unimagined before 1861. The Homestead Act, the Land Grant College Act, civil rights legislation, the use of paper currency, and creation of the Internal Revenue Service to collect …

Pursuing Justice In Africa: Competing Imaginaries And Contested Practices, Jessica Johnson, George Hamandishe Karekwaivanane

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Pursuing Justice in Africa focuses on the many actors pursuing many visions of justice across the African continent—their aspirations, divergent practices, and articulations of international and vernacular idioms of justice. The essays selected by editors Jessica Johnson and George Hamandishe Karekwaivanane engage with topics at the cutting edge of contemporary scholarship across a wide range of disciplines. These include activism, land tenure, international legal institutions, and postconflict reconciliation.

Building on recent work in sociolegal studies that foregrounds justice over and above concepts such as human rights and legal pluralism, the contributors grapple with alternative approaches to the concept of justice …

Alternative Models Of Sports Development In America: Solutions To A Crisis In Education And Public Health, B. David Ridpath Jan 2018

Alternative Models Of Sports Development In America: Solutions To A Crisis In Education And Public Health, B. David Ridpath

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In the United States, the entanglement of sports and education has persisted for over a century. Multimillion-dollar high school football stadiums, college coaches whose salaries are many times those of their institutions’ presidents, psychological and educational tolls on student-athletes, and high-profile academic scandals are just symptoms of a system that has come under increasing fire. Institutions large and small face persistent quandaries: which do they value more, academic integrity or athletic success? Which takes precedence: prioritizing elite teams and athletes, or making it possible for all students to participate in sports? How do we create opportunities for academic—not just athletic—development …

The Determinant Of Selfless Misuse Intention And The Role Of System Resilience Under The Context Of Disasters, Insu Park, Dheyaaldin Alsalman Jan 2018

The Determinant Of Selfless Misuse Intention And The Role Of System Resilience Under The Context Of Disasters, Insu Park, Dheyaaldin Alsalman

Research & Publications

The extant literature has investigated how individuals engage in inappropriate behaviors based on the rational choice theory (RCT), and the neutralization theory under normal situations, however it has given little consideration to how individuals engage in inappropriate behaviors under the context of disasters. To fill this research gap, we propose a selfless misuse model, which offers a theoretical explanation for the impact of the concept of bounded rationality on individuals’ selfless misuse intention under the context of disasters. In addition, to reduce this misuse behavior, we aim to investigate the role of system resilience in assisting employees to make better …

Classifying Facts And Opinions In Twitter Messages: A Deep Learning-Basedapproach, Ronghua Shan, Swayambhu P. Chatterjee, Shuyuan Deng, Jun Liu, Wu Jiao Jan 2018

Classifying Facts And Opinions In Twitter Messages: A Deep Learning-Basedapproach, Ronghua Shan, Swayambhu P. Chatterjee, Shuyuan Deng, Jun Liu, Wu Jiao

Research & Publications

Massive social media data present businesses with an immense opportunity to extract useful insights. However, social media messages typically consist of both facts and opinions, posing a challenge to analytics applications that focus more on either facts and opinions. Distinguishing facts and opinions may significantly improve subsequent analytics tasks. In this study, we propose a deep learning-based algorithm that automatically separates facts from opinions in Twitter messages. The algorithm outperformed multiple popular baselines in an experiment we conducted. We further applied the proposed algorithm to track customer complaints and found that it indeed benefits subsequent analytics applications.

Toward Understanding Customer Preference Factors In Agile - A Research Plan, David Bishop, Pam Rowland

Research & Publications

Our research plan is designed to discover factors that influence, positively or negatively, customer’s preference for agile software development. We will employ qualitative research techniques, specifically grounded theory, as our research method. Customers are an essential component of the agile approach and merit additional study on their preference for software projects developed using agile techniques. The results of our research will present emergent constructs that influence customer preference for agile development. These constructs can then be analyzed using quantitative techniques to assess their validity and understand their relationships.

How Ecs Improve Creative Use Of Employees’ Knowledge?, Vetrivadivel Vel, Insu Park

Research & Publications

Recently, organizations are using crowdsourcing systems (CSs) to collect innovative ideas from their employees harnessing their insights of companies’ products, processes, customers, and competitors. While crowd workers in third-party CSs are a diverse and multifaceted population with a range of motives and experience, and yet few researchers have grappled with the facilitators of the employees’ behavior comprising the creative application of their knowledge using enterprise CSs. This study develops a theoretical framework to identify enterprise CSs role and to provide the way how CSs are related to creative behavior via knowledge sharing. In this research, we used a survey to …
