The Determinant Of Selfless Misuse Intention And The Role Of System Resilience Under The Context Of Disasters, Insu Park, Dheyaaldin Alsalman

Research & Publications

The extant literature has investigated how individuals engage in inappropriate behaviors based on the rational choice theory (RCT), and the neutralization theory under normal situations, however it has given little consideration to how individuals engage in inappropriate behaviors under the context of disasters. To fill this research gap, we propose a selfless misuse model, which offers a theoretical explanation for the impact of the concept of bounded rationality on individuals’ selfless misuse intention under the context of disasters. In addition, to reduce this misuse behavior, we aim to investigate the role of system resilience in assisting employees to make better …

Classifying Facts And Opinions In Twitter Messages: A Deep Learning-Basedapproach, Ronghua Shan, Swayambhu P. Chatterjee, Shuyuan Deng, Jun Liu, Wu Jiao

Research & Publications

Massive social media data present businesses with an immense opportunity to extract useful insights. However, social media messages typically consist of both facts and opinions, posing a challenge to analytics applications that focus more on either facts and opinions. Distinguishing facts and opinions may significantly improve subsequent analytics tasks. In this study, we propose a deep learning-based algorithm that automatically separates facts from opinions in Twitter messages. The algorithm outperformed multiple popular baselines in an experiment we conducted. We further applied the proposed algorithm to track customer complaints and found that it indeed benefits subsequent analytics applications.

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The shea caterpillar Cirina butyrospermi is an important insect, highly valued as a human food item in Burkina Faso. However, its appearance is seasonal due to its univoltine cycle. This study therefore investigated the possibilities of breaking the nymphal diapause by changing the environmental factors and through the hormonal treatment of prepupae and pupae using bovine insulin and 20-hydroxyecdysone. Changes in humidity and temperature did not result in emergence, suggesting a mandatory nature of the diapause in C. butyrospermi. Injection of 20-hydroxyecdysone between 20 and 40 ng on 20 C. butyrospermi pupae resulted in 15.24 and 47.5% emergence, respectively. The …

Endophytic Colonization Of Onions Induces Resistance Against Viruliferous Thrips And Virus Replication, Alexander Mutua Muvea, Sevgan Subramanian, Nguya Kalemba Maniania, Hans Michael Poehling, Sunday Ekesi, Rainer Meyhöfer

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In agricultural ecosystems, insect pests, pathogens, weather patterns, and reduced soil fertility pose major challenges to crop productivity and are responsible for significant yield losses worldwide. Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) vectored by Thrips tabaci Lindeman, is a major hindrance to onion production in eastern Africa. Control measures often rely on insecticides with deleterious effects. Endophytes are one key alternative as they can play important roles in mediating induced systemic resistance. Hence, we examined the potential effect of endophytic fungus Hypocrea lixii (F3ST1) on feeding and replication of IYSV on endophyte-colonized (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) onion plants. For more precise …

Influence Of Prolonged Dietary Experience During The Larval Stage On Novel Odour Preferences In Adults Of Noctuid Stem Borer Moths (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Christophe Petit, Peter Ahuya, Bruno Le Ru, Laure Kaiser-Arnauld, Myriam Harry, Paul André Calatayud

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In Lepidoptera, larval dietary experience of volatile cues can induce adult preference for these cues. However, such induction may require several generations, depending in part on the degree of specialization of the insects. In a previous study, using species of noctuid stem borers with different diet breadths, namely the polyphagous Sesamia nonagrioides, the oligophagous Busseola fusca and monophagous Busseola nairobica, it was shown that in S. nonagrioides, one generation was enough to induce a preference for vanillin in the resulting gravid females, whereas even two generations failed to induce a response in adults of Busseola spp. In this study, we …

New Bone Cell Type Identified As Driver Of Drug Resistance In Multiple Myeloma: The Bone Marrow Adipocyte, Carolyne Falank, Heather Fairfield, Mariah Farrell, Michaela Reagan Jan 2018

New Bone Cell Type Identified As Driver Of Drug Resistance In Multiple Myeloma: The Bone Marrow Adipocyte, Carolyne Falank, Heather Fairfield, Mariah Farrell, Michaela Reagan

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy that is characterized by clonal proliferation of transformed plasma cells within the bone marrow (BM) and severe bone disease. Although MM cells are initially sensitive to many therapies, patients eventually relapse with refractory disease. Because MM cells show a dependency on the BM microenvironment for survival and proliferation, and BM adipocytes (BMAs) demonstrate a unique, endocrine signaling capacity and lipid composition, it is likely that there is cross-talk between MM cells and BMAs that leads to tumor support. Unlike the influences of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, the effect of BMAs on MM cells is …

A simple, cost effective high temperature sensor (up to 1000 °C) based on a hollow core fiber (HCF) structure is reported. It is configured by fusion splicing a short section of HCF with a length of few millimeters between two standard single mode fibers (SMF-28). Due to multiple beam interference introduced by the cladding of the HCF, periodic transmission dips with high spectral extinction ratio and high quality (Q) factor are excited. However, theoretical analysis shows that minor variations of the HCF cladding diameter may result in a significant decrease in the Q factor. Experimental results demonstrate that the position …

Small lateral forces (lower than 0.1 N) cannot normally be measured with conventional single-mode fiber-based sensors because of the high value of their Young modulus (>70 GPa). Here we demonstrate the measurement of lateral forces in the range from 0.2 to 1.4 × 10−3 N with a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) in conventional single-mode fiber pushed against the surface tension (ST) of a bead of water. The measured transmission changes of individual cladding mode resonances of the TFBG corresponding to these force values are of the order of 29 dB. Separate measurements of the contact angle between the …

A platinum coated singlemode-multimode (SM) structure is investigated in this paper as an optical fibre sensor (OFS) to monitor the phase transition of a phase change material (PCM). Paraffin wax has been used as an example to demonstrate the sensor's performance and operation. Most materials have the same temperature but different thermal energy levels during the phase change process, therefore, sole dependency on temperature measurement may lead to an incorrect estimation of the stored energy in PCM. The output spectrum of the reflected light from the OFS is very sensitive to the bend introduced by the PCM where both liquid …
