While many white individuals in America are antiracist in their attitudes, many are not. This makes conversations with whites around race a delicate space: addressing an imbalance of privilege with those who benefit from it. Additionally, to not alienate whites from antiracist causes by associating them with a historical identity seeped in racism calls for its own nuance. The project described in this thesis looks to address these concerns by providing whites with a roadmap for personal growth consisting of various identities for addressing bias, discrimination, and oppression in honest and proactive ways. In the midst of my freshman year of college in 2013, I was abducted and sexually assaulted while attending a party in my dorm building. I was taken away from my home under the influence of a date rape intoxicant, vanished from all consciousness and whisked into the darkness of that cold October night in Portland, Oregon. Fortunately, with the help from various doctors and two years of specialized rehabilitation, I have renewed my strength in mental stability, professionalism and verbal confidence to tell my story and establish a sense of closure for my own victimization.

After a period of stability, the transatlantic community is facing considerable challenges in maintaining European security. Russia’s efforts to destabilize Europe, terrorism, climate change, energy insecurity, migration, fracturing European identity, and the reemergence of nationalist populism challenge the ability of European institutions to perform their central functions. Different visions for Europe’s future and the lack of a shared threat perception add to these dilemmas.

The U.S. military can help to shape these “friendly force dilemmas” by influencing European actors and institutions, promoting positive change through the U.S. interagency, and providing capabilities to tackle the theater-specific challenges.

This project looks at the career of St. Catherine of Siena and argues that without the relationships she had with her closest followers, who provided social connections and knowledge of the operation of political power, she would not have been able to pursue as active or wide-ranging a career. The examination of Catherine’s relationships, the careers of her followers, and the ways she made use of this network of support, relies mainly on Catherine's extant letters. In 1914 the brilliant and remarkably versatile English engineer, Frederick William Lanchester, published a series of articles which he later consolidated into a book entitled, Aircraft in Warfare: The Dawn of the Fourth Arm. The best-remembered result of his intellectual excursion into military theory is a simple mathematical expression of the principle of concentration, called the "n-square Law," that defines what Lanchester called the relative "fighting strengths" of military forces in terms of their "numerical strengths" and the "fighting values," of the individual units.
