Eulogy For The Republic: Virgil's Anti-Augustan Longing For The Roman Republic In The Aeneid, Dylan Mcauley

For centuries many scholars have identified the Aeneid as a piece of propaganda designed to help legitimize the regime of Augustus Caesar. However, this analysis finds that there is an important subtext in the piece through which Virgil criticizes the Emperor. By analyzing the direct and indirect references to Augustus and potential commentary behind those references, it becomes clear the Virgil opposed many of Augustus' actions, longing for a return to the principles and governance of the Roman Republic and seeking to remind the readers of the glory of the Republic through his commentary in the piece.

Evolutions Of The Soldier Hero: Eastwood’S American Sniper And The Iraq War, Justin Gillingham

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper (2014) tells the story of Chris Kyle. However, it also participates in an extensive cinematic traditional by making use of the soldier-hero archetype. The soldier-hero is a cinematic historical figure representing a member of the armed services whose characteristics reflect the war in which they participate. Beginning with World War I, and then moving through World War II, Vietnam, and Iraq, the soldier-hero archetype develops in an iterative manner with each respective war. Eastwood’s film, taking place in the Iraq War film genre, both fulfills and breaks away from conventions traditionally ascribed to Iraq War films. …

Framed by critical medical anthropology, this applied study utilizes political economic theory and ethnographic methods to contextualize and evaluate the implementation of a global health initiative at the local level, as well as critically evaluates the response of state and international health agencies to the Zika epidemic in Costa Rica. The prevalence of arboviruses including Zika and the potential for epidemics and future population-level health consequences are examined by a multiaxial approach that incorporates themes of culture, socioeconomic context, issues of power and control, and human impact on the natural environment. Over forty years ago, Joseph Stalin outlined to his senior naval officers his ideas for a new and powerful Soviet fleet. Among the ships he suggested for that fleer was the aircraft carrier, whose dominance in naval warfare had yet to be established-and, in fan, was not clearly demonstrated until the Battle of Midway. Stalin never lived to see his hopes fulfilled bur, if Navy testimony and intelligence reports prove accurate, the Soviet fleet will unveil its first large, fixed-wing aircraft carrier some time near the end of this decade.

Although considerable attention has been given to "tactical" nuclear warfare by some people in the U.S. Navy in the last 2 years, the Navy remains woefully deficient in this increasingly important area of operations. To be sure, the Chief of Naval Operations has directed the service to improve itself in this direction. He has established an office in Opnav, Op-65, that is directly responsible for nuclear warfare at seat for appropriate weapons development. and for the employment of those weapons. Additionally, he has established a new program manager, PM-23, in the Naval Material Command, also responsible for nuclear war­fare considerations.

Background & Purpose:Low back pain is the second leading cause of disability in the United States, affecting 17% of Americans. Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is particularly debilitating among professions such as active duty military personnel (ADMP) who are required to maintain military readiness without the assistance of opioids. This scenario can result in individuals enduring untreated pain or resigning from participation in their unit. The purpose of this project is to determine the effect of providing a nonpharmacological pain management kit (NPMK) on pain and functional ability among ADMP who report CLBP.

In this article I describe my pedagogical approach to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish texts. I contend that by studying the cultural output of a remote historical period, modern students can examine mechanisms of exclusion without feeling compelled to defend their own identity or group. Racial dynamics are significantly different in the early modern period, when structural inequalities targeted religious minorities—the ‘conversos’ who were descendants of Jewish and Muslim inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula. That dimension is the electromagnetic spectrum. The two concepts rnay, at first glance appear to have little in common with each other but, in fact, they are closely related. The battle for the electromagnetic spectrum is, in many respects, a battle for time.
