South Asian American visual culture is a diverse field of visual art, created by artists who are first-, second- and third-generation immigrants from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, among other diasporic locations (e.g., Kenya). South Asian American artists work in a range of media forms, including photography, sculpture, installation, video, painting, and drawing. Collectively, these artworks are frequently exhibited in museums and galleries as depictions of contemporary South Asian immigrant life. However, a close reading of individual works produces a more dynamic picture. The concept of resilience is currently making its way into the field of peace and conflict studies, but it is a concept with different meanings and implications. The argument advanced in this paper is that in order to make the most of resilience thinking, the field should not conceive of resilience merely as the ability to bounce back to an original state after a disturbance, a conceptualization usually referred to as “engineering resilience.” Instead, it should engage with “ecological resilience,” which refers to the amount of disturbance that a system can absorb before being pushed across a threshold from one …

Political activism attests to the sociopolitical development and agency of young people. Yet the literature sparingly engages the intersectional subjectivities that inform the sociopolitical development of young people, especially women of color. Important questions remain in the theorizing of sociopolitical development among youth engaged in political activism within higher education settings. Thus, we focus on the following question: What experiences informed or catalyzed the sociopolitical development of women of color student activists within a racialized neoliberal university in the United States? This doctoral study explores three American post-combat reintegration plays written and produced in 2010 and 2011 in the United States. Using script analysis and production research, the dissertation describes some of the major themes of reintegration and strengths of theatrical production as revealed by the critically alternative narratives in the scripts and performances of Time Stands Still by Donald Margulies, American Soldiers by Matt Morillo, and Oohrah! by Bekah Brunstetter.

In this article I attempt to locate productive foundations for a critical theological methodology through engaging with both the inherently critical nature of comparative theology alongside the sociological, self-reflexive analysis of Pierre Bourdieu. I turn, first, to comparative theology because it is a field with a heightened sensibility for how self-reflexive critique functions within a theological context, as it assumes that both sides in any conversation maintain the possibility of re-examining their own premises and foundations. Peacetime espionage is an incredibly important and common occurrence in modern international relations, yet its legal status is far from clear. This Comment explores the practice’s legal background, as well as the arguments for and against its legality. While there can be many benefits to peacetime espionage, and while few countries have “clean hands,” it seems unworkable to overcome the presupposition that most espionage is an “intervention” as defined by the ICJ in Nicaragua v. The main objective of the "Let it Grip" 2017-2018 NUWC Universal Undersea Gripper project was to design an effective and efficient individual gripper capable of securing a pay- load of various sizes, shapes, and orientations. This an important and relevant project being that the current way of securing payloads throughout the duration of a mission involves pre-installed molds that can only hold a payload of a specific size and shape. Though there were many ways to improve upon the current payload-carrying apparatus, the team decided to focus on finding the optimal shape and material of a potential universal gripper.

Shifts in culture and technology have changed the manifestation of celebrity in modern society, culminating in the practice of internet microcelebrity, where one views followers as fans, produces content consistent with a personal brand, and engages in strategic interaction with devotees. This thesis examines how those effects have also changed how terrorists present themselves and operationalize celebrity status. An original typology of terrorist celebrity is presented: traditional, martyr, and internet micro-celebrity. One of the most significant trends in modern political history is the reduced prevalence of traditional interstate wars and concurrent spike in the number and intensity of non-international armed conflicts (NIACs). In particular, NIACs based in a contestation of identity between the state and its constituent national communities pose an important question to academics and policymakers: how can top-down institutional reforms reconcile group differences in order to forge a stronger, more unified state identity and reduce the potential for violent conflict? Over the past few decades there have been very few breakthrough discoveries in the field of antibiotics. Designing an effective drug is not a simple task, and requires a long and grueling selection and optimization process. The analogue approach is a very effective method in drug design and was applied to the N-aryl-oxazolidinone moiety in an effort to explore the structure activity relationship among this series. Modern/colonial states and corporate interests perpetually engage in industrial practices that cause environmental violence ( NYSHN and WEA 2014 ), and th is is a continuation of the logics of modernity/coloniality that developed at the onset of settler colonialism in the Americas (Mignolo 2000; Quijano 1991). Decolonial art plays an integral role in the formation of responses to modernity/coloniality (Maldonado-Torres 2002) and environmental violence, which can be clearly seen within the #NODAPL movement (Martineau and Ritskes 2014). This thesis examines the relationship between biological reproduction and the future in three works of science and speculative fiction, Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men , Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga , and Octavia Butler’s Lilith’s Brood . Each work is shaped by an imaginative change to the operation of reproduction. Applying critical frameworks ranging from Lee Edelman’s No Future: Queer Theory and the Death Drive to bell hooks’ “Eating the Other: Desire and Resistance” I argue that these narratives reflect contemporary cultural anxieties about who, and what, should be reproduced from one generation to the next. The aim of this study was to interrogate the widely reported link between close relationships and the development of PTSD and to contribute to the overarching discussion of PTSD among combat veterans. Participation was limited strictly to combat veterans. Participants were recruited through private combat veteran groups on social media, vetted combat veteran support groups in the Sarasota FL. area, and through the Sarasota VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 3233, (n=65). Participants completed the Modified ECR, a 20 question survey based on the Experiences in Close relationship scale and answered questions regarding PTSD diagnosis and symptoms. During the nineteenth century, exponential growth in sheep pastoralism in Australia and New Zealand, and in less predictable locales such as the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and Rapanui (Easter Island), fueled the alienation of Indigenous peoples from their lands. The sheep and their wool, at the heart of these ‘grass wars,’ fed a global industry that supported another kind of war – the mass, cold climate warfare characterizing the century between the Crimean and Korean wars.
