God’S Beautiful Mission: Missional Church And Leadership In The Light Of Theological Aesthetics, M. Scott Boren Apr 2018

God’S Beautiful Mission: Missional Church And Leadership In The Light Of Theological Aesthetics, M. Scott Boren

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This project seeks to ascertain how pastoral leaders who have been trained in missional theology have led in a way that has been influenced by theological aesthetics. The view of missional leadership here is built upon a re-imagination of missio Dei and missional church that is informed by theological aesthetics. This theology of beauty is based upon the work of Gregory A. Boyd, Jonathan Edwards, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. This proposal seeks to advance the views of the missional church rooted in the work of Lesslie Newbigin and advanced by Craig Van Gelder, Alan Roxburgh, and Pat …

War Lust And Unshaven, Unkempt Individuals Examining The Csb|Sju Campus, Catholicism, And The Anti-Vietnam War Movement From 1965-1968, Stephanie Haeg Apr 2018

War Lust And Unshaven, Unkempt Individuals Examining The Csb|Sju Campus, Catholicism, And The Anti-Vietnam War Movement From 1965-1968, Stephanie Haeg

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Two important elements of the anti-Vietnam war movement were the student protests and religious pacifism, but the overlap of the two areas is rarely examined. What were college students nationwide doing during that time, and how did the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University differ from both secular and other Catholic colleges? How did Catholicism affect the CSB|SJU anti-war movement from 1965-1968? I examine student newspapers from this time to see how the language and rhetoric used in student’s letters to the editor and opinion pieces reflected Catholic sentiments and theological arguments worldwide. I then reflect on how …

Cuando La Vida Era Tranquila: Land Use And Livelihood Changes Following The Construction Of The Chan 75 Dam In Nance Del Risco, Bocas Del Toro, Patrick Mckenzie

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Ngobe are Panama’s most populous indigenous group. While the Ngobe that live in the comarca have land and resource rights, those that live immediately outside of it do not. This issue has been exacerbated by the creation of Palo Seco Forest Reserve which has removed all land rights from the Ngobe living within it. In order to meet its growing demand for energy, Panama is expanding its hydroelectric sector. One such hydroelectric dam built by AES is Chan 75. However, Chan 75 has had a controversial history, especially regarding its treatment of the Ngobe people of the corregimiento Nance …

The Revolution Conundrum In Cameroon: A Study Of Relative Peace Under President Biya's Rule, Marianna Babboni Apr 2018

The Revolution Conundrum In Cameroon: A Study Of Relative Peace Under President Biya's Rule, Marianna Babboni

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper attempts to answer the question: What are the factors that have contributed to relative peace in Cameroon under the rule of President Paul Biya up until the civil uprisings in the Anglophone regions in 2016? Cameroon has witnessed consistent civil unrest in the forms of protests and strikes and yet the political structure remains strong against all opposition. Within the limitations of the research, the study finds three main explanations: state terror tactics and divide and rule strategies have quelled opposition, the survival culture of the population has resulted in creative economic alternatives that subsidize civil disorder, and …

Emotional Intelligence And Leader Development: Measuring Trait Emotional Intelligence Scores Of Mid- Career Commissioned U.S. Army Officers, Stephan Lorentz Walters Apr 2018

Emotional Intelligence And Leader Development: Measuring Trait Emotional Intelligence Scores Of Mid- Career Commissioned U.S. Army Officers, Stephan Lorentz Walters

Dissertations

The United States Army is preparing for the ambiguous and consistently changing realities of the modern world by developing leaders who are adaptive, mentally agile, and open to change. However, without instruments or tools that purposefully measure adaptability within each individual leader, it is challenging to determine the U.S. Army’s effectiveness at the strategic goal to develop adaptive and self-aware leaders.

The dependent variables of interest are the trait emotional intelligence scores of commissioned U.S. Army leaders who have at least 10 years of military experience. This quantitative survey based study samples (N = 28) mid-career U.S. Army Majors using …

Dipl 6181 Statecraft: Designing Foreign Policy, Ann Marie Murphy Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course will introduce students to the study of statecraft: the design of strategies to achieve foreign policy goals; the choice of policy instruments within these strategies; and an assessment of their relative utility in achieving national objectives. This class begins by exploring key theoretical underpinnings of statecraft such as bargaining, power, threats, promises and cost/benefit analysis. It then examines different tools of statecraft, including strategic bombing, economic sanctions, foreign aid and trade, targeted killings, and propaganda. The course analyzes the objectives typically associated with each policy tool, the conditions under which they are most likely to be effective in …

Maiden Voyage (A Novel), Kyra Bauske

English

Maiden Voyage is an adventure story. It didn’t start out that way, but that’s what it has become. The story follows a young woman who stumbles onto her father’s secrets. Alexandra feels trapped in an 18th century English settlement on Nassau. Under her father’s protection, Alexandra is expected to marry and remain on the island. When she discovers a letter in her father’s office naming her as an “asset” she finds herself asking who her father really is. Who is the business associate who comes every month? Why does he really want her married to Lord Dewhurst? When her best …

Space Privatization, Colonization, And Militarization: A New Frontier For International Law, Juan A. Ortiz Salazar Apr 2018

Space Privatization, Colonization, And Militarization: A New Frontier For International Law, Juan A. Ortiz Salazar

Paideia

Early into the 21st century, technological developments made unparalleled advances in the field of space. The realm of outer space has seen a change from exploration to technology-driven, ambitious goals more aligned with national interests and security. In this paper I ask the following research question: How can international organizations and law address the rapid advances in space exploration? To answer the research question, I conducted three case studies: 1) space privatization, 2) space colonization, and 3) space militarization. According to my research, existing international law cannot inhibit conflict in the 21st century characterized by intense competition to obtain space …

Heirs To The Frontier: James Fenimore Cooper’S Influence On Tolstoy, Christian Gum Apr 2018

Heirs To The Frontier: James Fenimore Cooper’S Influence On Tolstoy, Christian Gum

Inquiry Journal 2018

In the early nineteenth century, American author James Fenimore Cooper wrote a series of frontier novels called The Leatherstocking Tales (1823-1841), the most famous of which was The Last of the Mohicans (1826). Forty years after Cooper published his earliest work, a young Leo Tolstoy marched south into the Caucasus after enlisting in the Russian Imperial Army. Tolstoy, best known as the author of War and Peace (1865) and Anna Karenina (1873), began his literary career by writing about his experiences in the Caucasus, the frontier of the Russian Empire. With the knowledge that Tolstoy read Cooper’s work, I used …

The History Of The Future: A Creative 26th Century Article On The 2016 Presidential Election, Spencer J. Chowning

Honors Theses

As technology has grown in recent decades, many fields of study have been affected. This thesis will consider how technology might continue to impact the field of the historian and what historical research and writing might look like in the distant future. This project will attempt to demonstrate the potential sources of a future historian, how those sources might have been stored, how historians might interpret those sources, and what historical writing itself might look like. This thesis will demonstrate these aspects in a creative manner in the form of a future historical scholarly article from the 26th century …
