The American way of war is characterized by the use of overwhelming force and a search for technological advantage.t This appears to be a logical approach, given a political need to limit the duration of a conflict and minimize casualties. This style of warfare, however, is not applicable to every type of con flict. Although technology has certainly enhanced the conduct of war in many ways, it remains only a tool, useful in certain applications. Luce and Alfred Thayer Mahan wrote within the pages of the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings that a place was needed in which naval officers could study the higher aspects of their profession. The need for such study was being driven by the increasingly complex nature of naval warfare as the service embraced such technologies as steam power, long-range weapons, and wireless communications. Luce and Mahan advocated the establishment of a "college of naval war," and in 1884 their dream was realized when our institution first opened its doors on the shores of Narragansett Bay.

A Black Girl’S Song Misogynoir, Love, And Beyoncé’S Lemonade, Zeffie Gaines

Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education

This article examines Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade in the context of black feminist theory, misogynoir, and issues of black self-love. After a brief overview of the initial response to Beyoncé’s album, this essay explores the deeper, metaphorical implication of Lemonade. This essay demonstrates that while Lemonade is ostensibly about marital infidelity, the trope of unfaithfulness is used to make a more profound commentary on the ontological crisis around blackness and black womanhood in American culture. Through close readings of several important scenes and tracks in Lemonade, this essay demonstrates that this album constitutes a masterwork by Beyoncé and should be …

Women In Combat: Russian Women In Wwii, Hayley Noble

2018 Graduate Student Showcase

Integration of women into combat roles within the U.S. military was announced in December 2015. Criticisms continue to arise questioning the capabilities of women, discussing training standards, performance results, and combat effectiveness. My project seeks to persuade those opposed to the decision that women can succeed on the battlefield by using examples from World War II. Russia utilized up to a million women, fully demonstrating their potential. Their experiences prove women can perform comparable to men. These examples are relevant, both in politics and society, when debating gender, deeply entrenched cultural norms, governmental policies, and the direction military is headed.

This project is an examination of correlations between imperial enterprises of the Second German Empire and the Nazi Reich through the lenses of global and imperial critiques. The three primary case studies are German Southwest Africa, the Ober Ost, and Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, particularly the General Government. This research draws heavily on certain themes and theories developed by leading historians of modern German and Eastern European history, including Timothy Snyder, Ben Kiernan, Shelley Baranowski, Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, and Christopher Browning. This paper explores themes of duality, subversion and humanity through a critical analysis of the first season of HBO’s Carnivàle. Production elements like costuming and lighting serve as key points of examination, as does the show’s writing through representation of various religious beliefs and faith in mystical, mythological forces, inspired by real-world ideologies yet unique to the world of Carnivàle. The three categories of costuming, lighting and religion demonstrate Carnivàle’s obsession with visual storytelling, apt for story told in a visual medium.

Thirty-five years ago, right after World War II, the Naval Wat College went through one of those soul searching examinations, the kind that people and institutions go through after cataclysmic events. Before World War II the War College's purpose was to teach naval warfare to senior naval officers. Evidently it succeeded in its task. When considering graduates, names like Nimitz, Halsey, King, Spruance, and Fletcher come to mind. One of its greatest contributions to naval warfare was the wargaming strategy taught to the students in 1922.

Observers of military affairs will have noted a changed naval lexicon over the past several years. To those accustomed to phrases such as"sea power," "command" of the seas," "commerce warfare," and "amphibious warfare," the new terms "strategic deterrence," "sea control," and "presence" may seem to be just new jargon. Not so. Since 1970 there has been a redefinition of traditional U.S. naval roles and missions. The primary purpose of this redefinition is to force the navy to think in terms of output rather than input.

Navy recruitment posters from World War II are an important piece of American culture. The iconic signage can be seen in antique stores and textbooks alike. However, these posters provide more than just bold imagery and vintage decor. By analyzing recruitment posters as if they were advertisements and placing them in the context of the time period, many facets of American identity can be understood, especially regarding race, gender, and patriotism. Water entry has been studied for over a century, but few studies have focused on multiple droplets impacting on a liquid bath sequentially. We connect multi-droplet streams, jets and solid objects with physical-based scaling arguments that emphasize the intrinsically similar cavities. In particular, the cavities created by the initial impact of both droplet streams and jets on an initially quiescent liquid pool exhibit the same types of cavity seal as hydrophobic spheres at low Bond number, some of which were previously unseen for jets and droplet streams. Low-frequency droplet streams exhibit an additional three new cavity seal types unseen for …

This volume addresses the history of saints and sainthood in the Middle Ages in the Baltic Region with a special focus on the cult of saints in Russia, Prussia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, and Latvia (more commonly referred to in the Middle Ages as Livonia).
