"To Associate Ourselves With The Men Of Ulster:" A Gendered History Of Ulster's Solemn League And Covenant And The Ulster Women's Declaration, 1910-1920, Turner Jacobs

This paper explores the gendered constitution of Ulster's Solemn League and Covenant and the Ulster Women's Declaration, two documents that were instrumental in the Ulster unionist campaign against Irish Home Rule. Composed and circulated in 1912, these documents elucidated the Unionist platform while exposing the differences in gender roles inherent in Ulster's political and social spheres. Additionally, the two documents provided the basis for a Unionist militia that included both men and women, albeit in distinctive capacities. By examining the Covenant and Declaration, a more comprehensive understanding of the anti-Home Rule campaign can be fully realized.

From May to October 1853, the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, battled a terrifying epidemic of yellow fever. This paper examines the spread of the disease, the death toll as the epidemic continued, and the political, medical, and social effects of this particular epidemic. Several thousand individuals succumbed to yellow fever between May 28 and October 8, 1853, and over 8,000 of these died. The medical, political, and social views on yellow fever varied by region, but all held that it was a mysterious and terrifying disease that carried off an excessive number of individuals. This paper aims to show the inner workings of one of the most prolific foreign espionage agencies of the Cold War. From 1953 to 1990, the German Democratic Republic sat on the front lines of modern espionage. East Germany separated the Soviet Union from the West. The man in charge of maintaining order was Markus Wolf. His most impactful agent was Günter Guillaume who was in the office of West German Chancellor Willy Brandt. This paper explores the considerable military and technological developments which took place within the French army during the opening stages of this engagement at the regimental level. The research suggests that these developments were a part of the global evolution of infantry tactics in general. Using the 153e Régiment d’Infanterie as a case study, the author will display how even during the first three months of the confrontation, there were significant doctrinal and organizational changes which affected the lowest levels of the French Army. My research project focuses on the Free Thai movement that emerged in America. Based on an analysis of a variety of primary sources, particularly declassified wartime documents and memoirs of Free Thai members, it seeks to explain the nature of this movement: what determined its course as well as outcome? Because the Free Thai was a liberation movement, one generally assumes that it was an organization of a military nature. While that is somewhat true, my research shows that the Free Thai movement was fundamentally characterized by political elements. There are two factors which have already been established in Free …

This paper examines how loans transpired in early 16th century Italy, taking a look at a specific transaction involving Lodovico Capponi of Florence and the Vatican in Rome. The study breaks down into three separate themes: lenders, collateral, and interest. The paper takes a look at what sorts of people were lending money to whom, the importance of collateral and the kind of objects that were deemed acceptable for it, and the delicate application and retrieval of usurious interest on a loan. Waging a highly irregular war — an insurgency — in Northeast Nigeria since September 2010, Boko Haram over the years has escalated as a threat form. By 2014, this threat extended beyond Nigeria’s borders; and by 2017, thousands of people had become casualties of the conflict; with millions displaced in Northeast Nigeria. Boko Haram however did not necessarily achieve this threat escalation by fighting and defeating the Nigerian military on the battlefield. A large part of Boko Haram’s calculations, rather, have been focused on its covert front and on war avoidance altogether. Indeed, covert tactics have been the main vehicle …
