Student Perception Of Professors’ Teaching Attributes In Post-Secondary Hospitality Management Degree Programs, Oren Hertz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study describes how undergraduate students in their junior and senior year seeking a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management at a regionally accredited university perceive their professors’ instructional attributes and behaviors. This examination concentrated on two critical zones of discernment concerning professors’ instructional practices. Participants were asked what teaching attributes contributed to their academic success, and teaching attributes did not contribute to their academic success. The study also sought to identify any obstacles faced by the participating undergraduate students and their faculty as indicators of how to mitigate such obstacles. This study included a review of an extensive collection of …

Supportive Programs In Synergistic Middle And High Schools To Increase Engagement And Prevent Students From Dropping Out, Washington B. Collado
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study examined how two high schools have successfully increased graduation rates while serving minority-majority and impoverished communities. Data collected for this qualitative, multi-site, case study employed publicly-available archival materials, interviews, focus groups, and observations in leadership meetings to help narrate a story that takes into account the complexities of human relations, specifically those in school settings in an urban school district. Thirty-four participants were selected by the principals at the participating schools and included members of their leadership teams, such as literacy coaches, assistant principals, magnet coordinators, students, parents, security specialists, and guidance counselors. The conceptual framework of the …
The Coordination Dynamics Of Multiple Agents, Mengsen Zhang
The Coordination Dynamics Of Multiple Agents, Mengsen Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A fundamental question in Complexity Science is how numerous dynamic processes coordinate with each other on multiple levels of description to form a complex whole - a multiscale coordinative structure (e.g. a community of interacting people, organs, cells, molecules etc.). This dissertation includes a series of empirical, theoretical and methodological studies of rhythmic coordination between multiple agents to uncover dynamic principles underlying multiscale coordinative structures. First, a new experimental paradigm was developed for studying coordination at multiple levels of description in intermediate-sized (N = 8) ensembles of humans. Based on this paradigm, coordination dynamics in 15 ensembles was examined experimentally, …
The Effects Of The Ready For Success Classroom Guidance Program On The Social-Emotional Skills And Competence, Reading Proficiency, And Promotion Rate Of Third-Grade Students, Ellen K. Chanc
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of the current outcome study was to determine the effects of the Ready for Success (RFS) classroom guidance program (Brigman & Webb, 2012) on the social-emotional skills and competence, reading proficiency, and promotion between third-grade students who received the RFS intervention (treatment group; n = 104), and third-grade students who did not receive the intervention (comparison group; n=91). Following training in the manualized RFS curriculum, certified school counselors in the treatment group implemented five, weekly, 30-minute lessons followed by three monthly booster lessons. This study followed a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent group design. The study employed a teacher report measure …
The Non-Random Selection Of Medicinal Plants Theory: A Case Study Of A Kichwa Community In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Arias Daniela M Robles
The Non-Random Selection Of Medicinal Plants Theory: A Case Study Of A Kichwa Community In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Arias Daniela M Robles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The non-random selection of medicinal plants theory, which states that phylogeny affects the selection of medicinal plants, was proposed by Daniel Moerman to indirectly prove that traditional medicinal systems are rational and based in part by the therapeutic efficacy of plants. The logic of this theory is that because members of a taxonomical group share similar characteristics, some groups will be more medicinal and will be over-used in pharmacopoeias, while other groups bereft of secondary metabolites and therapeutic potential will be under-used medicinally. To test this theory, Moerman linearly regressed the total number of medicinal plants per family against the …

The Manteño Of The Cloud Forest: Settlement Patterns And Spatial Analysis Of Manteño Stone Architecture In The Las Tusas River Valley In Manabí, Ecuador, Andrés E. Garzón-Oechsle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The present study identifies settlement patterns of the Manteño culture within the cloud forest of southern Manabí by surveying, recording and analyzing the stone architecture found within the drainage basin of the Las Tusas River, Ecuador. The statistical methods used were: Triangulated Irregular Networks or TIN (for topography interpretations), K-means (to determine natural groups for structures based on their dimensions, shape, and wall thickness), Ripley’s K (to determine spatial nature of these groups) and Kernel Density (to visualize their spatial organization). The cloud forest ecotone of southern Manabí was an anthropogenic landscape during the late Integration period. The alluvial valleys …
The Role Of Bdnf In The Survival And Morphological Development Of Adult-Born Olfactory Neurons, Brittnee Mcdole
The Role Of Bdnf In The Survival And Morphological Development Of Adult-Born Olfactory Neurons, Brittnee Mcdole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Olfactory Granule cells (GCs) are a population of inhibitory interneurons responsible for maintaining normal olfactory bulb (OB) function and circuitry. Through dendrodendritic synapses with the OBs projection neurons, the GCs regulate information sent to the olfactory cortices. Throughout adulthood, GCs continue to integrate into the OB and contribute to olfactory circuitry. However, only ~50% will integrate and survive longterm. Factors aiding in the survival and morphological development of these neurons are still being explored. The neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) aids in the survival and dendritic spine maturation/maintenance in several populations of CNS neurons. Investigators show that increasing BDNF in …
User Behavior Modeling In Online Display Advertising, Nice Kara Van
User Behavior Modeling In Online Display Advertising, Nice Kara Van
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Online display advertising intends to find the best match between advertise- ment (ad) campaigns and online users, conditioned by user specific contexts such as geographic locations, and hobbies etc. During this matching process, user behavior plays a crucial role in determining whether and when the user, who has been served the ad, will result in a conversion event. Advertisers seek to understand how users behave if they are continuously served impressions from the same campaign, as well as any noticeable patterns between campaign categorization and user behavior. This thesis carries out data analytics to investigate correlation between user behavior and …
Two Essays On Media Connections And Corporate Finance Policies, Md Miran Hossain
Two Essays On Media Connections And Corporate Finance Policies, Md Miran Hossain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The study examines the effects of executives’ media connection on corporate policies. Extant literature in finance, economics and journalism provide inconclusive evidence in determining whether media works as watchdog to the financial market or whether media facilitates bias through manipulation of corporate news events. I introduce two competing hypotheses that may explain the research question. Information Efficiency Hypothesis predicts that media connected firms mitigate information asymmetry among its investors, enjoy better governance, and are less likely to manipulate information on corporate policy choices. Manipulation Hypothesis, in contrary, suggests that firms may strategically utilize media connections to alter the information flow …
Vibration Of Nonlocal Carbon Nanotubes And Graphene Nanoplates, Florian Hache
Vibration Of Nonlocal Carbon Nanotubes And Graphene Nanoplates, Florian Hache
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis deals with the analytical study of vibration of carbon nanotubes and graphene plates. First, a brief overview of the traditional Bresse-Timoshenko models for thick beams and Uflyand-Mindlin models for thick plates will be conducted. It has been shown in the literature that the conventionally utilized mechanical models overcorrect the shear effect and that of rotary inertia. To improve the situation, two alternative versions of theories of beams and plates are proposed. The first one is derived through the use of equilibrium equations and leads to a truncated governing differential equation in displacement. It is shown, by considering a …

“Everybody knew the McAllen police were a bunch of tough hombres, especially the Boys on C shift,” reported the Dallas Morning News on March 29, 1981. “Working the midnight-to-8 a.m. shift along the border is like being at war, the cops said. You have to be tough. The Boys on C shift worked at being tough.” Many of the “Boys” wore black T-shirts with gold letters bearing “the legend, ‘C Shift Animals.’ They even had their own slogan: ‘Kick…and Ask Questions Later.’ ” Only days earlier, the public had become aware of their misdeeds, revealed in six years of booking …

This dissertation investigates what makes Community Development Projects successful.
This dissertation implemented a comprehensive quantitative analysis using data collected from over one hundred community development projects obtained from The World Bank database. These projects took place in developing nations around the …
Limitless Discretion In The Wars On Drugs And Terror, Wadie E. Said
Limitless Discretion In The Wars On Drugs And Terror, Wadie E. Said
University of Colorado Law Review
The wars on terror and drugs have been defined, largely, by what they lack: a readily identifiable opponent, a clear end goal, a timeline, and geographical boundaries. Based on that understanding, this Article discusses the increasingly expansive discretion of American authorities to prosecute individuals where the wars on terror and drugs intersect. Through laws such as the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act, the ban on providing material support to foreign terrorist organizations, and the narco-terrorism statute, the United States exercises a kind of universal jurisdiction to pursue anyone, anywhere it believes its laws are being violated. Wielding the power of …

Truth, Lies, And The Confrontation Clause, Emily Spottswood
University of Colorado Law Review
This Article examines and critiques the recent revival of the Sixth Amendment's Confrontation Clause as a means of improving the quality of criminal trials. The Clause is best interpreted as a tool that aims to reduce the likelihood of wrongful convictions by limiting the ability of prosecutors and witnesses to concoct believable but false stories without fear of their deception being uncovered through crossexamination. Unfortunately, modern doctrine has come unmoored from this foundation. Requiring confrontation of available prosecution fact witnesses serves a useful (if narrow) evidentiary function in that it provides a check against an unethical prosecutor who might otherwise …

Semantic Hygiene For The Law Of Regulatory Takings, Due Process, And Unconstitutional Conditions -- Making Use Of A Muddy Supreme Court Exactions Case, Zygmunt J.B. Plater, Michael O'Loughlin
Semantic Hygiene For The Law Of Regulatory Takings, Due Process, And Unconstitutional Conditions -- Making Use Of A Muddy Supreme Court Exactions Case, Zygmunt J.B. Plater, Michael O'Loughlin
University of Colorado Law Review
An unfortunate amount of semantic confusion currently burdens the constitutional process of balancing private property rights and governmental public welfare protections. The Fifth Amendment contains both a general requirement of "due process," and a corollary protection against unconstitutional "taking" of property. These are two separate protections, not just one. More than a century after the Takings Clause was drafted, an enigmatic decision, Pennsylvania Coal, expanded the clause to say that government regulations could cause such a diminution of private property value that they could unconstitutionally take that property, even with no physical appropriation (which is how the Framers had understood …
Identity Harm, Sarah Dadush
Identity Harm, Sarah Dadush
University of Colorado Law Review
In September 2015, the world learned that Volkswagen had rigged millions of its "clean diesel" vehicles with illegal software designed to cheat emissions tests. Contrary to what had been advertised, the vehicles are anything but clean. When affected owners learned that their cars were toxic, what were they most upset about? Was it that their cars were now worth fewer dollars? Or that they had been deceived into being hyperpolluting drivers, when they thought they were being green? Coverage of the emissions scandal strongly suggests that affected car owners experienced both kinds of disappointment, economic and noneconomic, and in heavy …
Compact Compliance As A Beneficial Use: Increasing The Viability Of An Interstate Water Bank Program In The Colorado River Basin, Emily Halvorsen
Compact Compliance As A Beneficial Use: Increasing The Viability Of An Interstate Water Bank Program In The Colorado River Basin, Emily Halvorsen
University of Colorado Law Review
There is a looming problem facing the Colorado River Basin: an increasing likelihood of a compact call on the Upper Basin due to projected climate change and population growth stresses on the Colorado River. To address this problem, water resource managers and natural resource management organizations throughout the Upper Basin have proposed a leading approach of an interstate water bank program. There are three main shortfalls to this though, which do not make the program a viable approach in addressing the problem: (1) legal uncertainty regarding individual water rights; (2) concerns regarding speculation; and (3) lack of incentives for state …
