Exploring The Association Between Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting And Hiv, Evidence To End Fgm/C Programme Consortium Aug 2018

Exploring The Association Between Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting And Hiv, Evidence To End Fgm/C Programme Consortium

Reproductive Health

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) threatens the health and well-being of girls in a variety of ways. Some experts have suggested that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be among the practice’s adverse health outcomes. They theorize that because women with FGM/C risk genital trauma and bleeding during intercourse, their chances of acquiring HIV from an infected male partner are increased. While evidence that FGM/C increases susceptibility to HIV could bolster FGM/C eradication efforts, this connection has received limited research attention. This brief highlights the Evidence to End FGM/C program’s findings on the current state of evidence on the association between FGM/C …

Dynamics Of Coupled Particles In A Time-Dependent, Double-Gyre Flow, Manuel Albrizzio Aug 2018

Dynamics Of Coupled Particles In A Time-Dependent, Double-Gyre Flow, Manuel Albrizzio

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

We consider a time-dependent, wind-driven, stochastic double-gyre flow, and investigate the interaction between the flow and coupled particles operating within the flow. It is known that noise can cause individual particles to escape from one gyre to another gyre. By computing the Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) of the system, one can determine low and high probability regions of particle escape. We adjust the coupling between two particles, and study the effect on particle escape for a variety of initial conditions and noise intensities.

Understanding The Flow Structure Of Low Reynolds Number Flows, Albert Jarvis

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Ocean flows and the mechanisms by which their contents are organized has been a longstanding area of interest in applied mathematics. In recent years, a new theory has been developed to identify the structures responsible for the organization of fluid particles within complex geophysical flows. This theory is known as the theory of Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) and details which structures are responsible for the organization of the flow and how to identify them. Being able to identify these LCS in real time has far reaching implications ranging from developing strategies for search and rescue missions to identifying the best …

Adult Attachment In Close Relationships And Trait Emotional Intelligence: The Moderating Role Of Mindfulness, Laura Kimberly Chang Aug 2018

Adult Attachment In Close Relationships And Trait Emotional Intelligence: The Moderating Role Of Mindfulness, Laura Kimberly Chang

Dissertations

The moderating role of mindfulness on the relationships between trait emotional intelligence (TEI) and both attachment-related anxiety and avoidance among college students (N = 510) was explored in the present study. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlations aligned with the extant body of literature, suggesting strong relationships between attachment-related anxiety, avoidance, and TEI. As expected, results suggested a strong relationship between levels of mindfulness and TEI. In the interest of assessing the degree to which mindfulness explained variance in participants’ TEI levels (while accounting for attachment levels), a hierarchical multiple regression was conducted. Data analysis indicated that the variables college classification …

Evaluation Of Blight Resistance In Chestnut F2 Half-Sibling And Full-Sibling Families Via Small Stem Assay, Kevin Gentner

Honors Theses

In 1904, Cryphonectria parasitica, the causal agent for chestnut blight, was imported into North America on chestnut nursery stock from China. Fifty-five years later, nearly all full-grown wild American chestnut trees (Castanea dentata) were dead. A century of work has been put into restoring the American chestnut to its rightful place among the forest canopy. Since the 1980s, The American Chestnut Foundation has pursued backcross breeding to introgress blight resistance into C. dentata from the resistant Chinese species (C. mollissima), and has used progeny testing to make predictions about parental resistance in B3F2 chestnuts. We performed a small stem assay …

The research in this paper seeks to analyze the rhetoric surrounding issues of American foreign policy using the Iran Deal as a case study. The main question this research intends to answer is: Are suggested soft power policy solutions, such as that of the Iran Deal, characterized as either feminine or masculine? I seek to answer this question through a discourse analysis of the rhetoric in newspaper articles from The New York Times and The Washington Post about the Iran Deal from the year 2015. I identify common themes and phrases among these articles and draw my own conclusions about …

Culture, Food, And Racism: The Effects On African American Health, Kalah Elantra Vance Aug 2018

Culture, Food, And Racism: The Effects On African American Health, Kalah Elantra Vance

Honors Theses

Cultures can be influenced by a number of different factors, one of the most notable being food. Cultural food staples have often traveled from their country of origin of to be integrated into the cuisine of another. African slaves for example, used their knowledge of their West African heritage to forage soul food, a well know cuisine in the American South. The adaptations made to food practices during slavery decreased the nutritional value of the previously healthy West African dishes. After creating a relatively unhealthy food culture through slavery, African Americans continued to face persecution at the hands of the …

First Principles-Based Microkinetic Modeling Of Ethanol From Syngas On Bimetallic Co-Pd Catalysts, Anuradha Gundamaraju Aug 2018

First Principles-Based Microkinetic Modeling Of Ethanol From Syngas On Bimetallic Co-Pd Catalysts, Anuradha Gundamaraju

All Dissertations

In the future, the availability of reliable alternative fuels will be crucial for any country to become energy independent. One such alternative is ethanol as it can be used both as a fuel and as a fuel additive. Most of the ethanol produced in the world today is derived from biomass. The biomass feedstocks and fermentation broths used in ethanol production both contain high amounts of water and therefore, the energy efficiency of the process is lessened by product separation processes (azeotropic separation of water and ethanol) that are non-trivial and highly inefficient (due to the evaporation of water). An …

Saudi Nurse Knowledge, Cultural Perspective, And Intent Regarding Cervical Cancer Prevention, Alaa Mujallad Aug 2018

Saudi Nurse Knowledge, Cultural Perspective, And Intent Regarding Cervical Cancer Prevention, Alaa Mujallad

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cervical cancer can be controlled by providing screening and vaccination. Although rates for this female cancer are decreasing in developed countries, these low rates are not observed in the other countries. In Saudi Arabia, cervical cancer cases are increasing dramatically (from only 152 cases in 2014, to 241 cases in 2017). Lack of knowledge about cervical cancer prevention presumably contributes to the morbidity and mortality rate among Saudi women, as do religio-cultural beliefs about modesty, sexuality, and premarital virginity. Therefore, this study sought to describe how Saudi nurses’ knowledge and religio-cultural beliefs effected their intentions to promote cervical cancer prevention. …

Simvastatin Does Not Sensitize Ibc3 Her2+ Inflammatory Breast Cancer Brain Metastases To Whole Brain Irradiation In An Immunocompromised Mouse Model, Swaminathan Kumar Aug 2018

Simvastatin Does Not Sensitize Ibc3 Her2+ Inflammatory Breast Cancer Brain Metastases To Whole Brain Irradiation In An Immunocompromised Mouse Model, Swaminathan Kumar

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Retrospective data analysis suggests that inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) patients who take statins have better locoregional control after radiotherapy than those who do not [23]. Our lab has previously demonstrated that simvastatin radiosensitizes IBC cells in vitro [23], and brain metastases have strong expression of cholesterol-regulation genes compared to lung metastases in vivo [unpublished]. Delaying whole-brain irradiation (WBI) beyond 21 days is insufficient to reduce the incidence of brain metastases (developed by injecting IBC3 cells through the tail vein) in our mouse model because even high rates of cell killing leave substantial cell volume in established metastases [unpublished].

With the …
