Thresholds And Drivers Of Coral Calcification Responses To Climate Change, Niklas Kornder, Bernhard Riegl, Joana Figueiredo

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Increased temperature and CO2 levels are considered key drivers of coral reef degradation. However, individual assessments of ecological responses (calcification) to these stressors are often contradicting. To detect underlying drivers of heterogeneity in coral calcification responses, we developed a procedure for the inclusion of stress–effect relationships in ecological meta‐analyses. We applied this technique to a dataset of 294 empirical observations from 62 peer‐reviewed publications testing individual and combined effects of elevated temperature and pCO2 on coral calcification. Our results show an additive interaction between warming and acidification, which reduces coral calcification by 20% when pCO2 levels exceed …

Glucagon receptor (GCGR) agonists cause hyperglycemia but also weight loss. However, GLP1R/GCGR mixed agonists do not exhibit the diabetogenic effects often attributed to GCGR activity. Thus, we sought to investigate the effect of glucagon agonism on insulin action and glucose homeostasis. Acute GCGR agonism induced immediate hyperglycemia, followed by improved glucose tolerance and enhanced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. Moreover, acute GCGR agonism improved insulin tolerance in a dose-dependent manner in both lean and obese mice. Improved insulin tolerance was independent of GLP1R, FGF21, and hepatic glycogenolysis. Moreover, we observed increased glucose infusion rate, disposal, uptake, and suppressed endogenous glucose production during …

Ubiquitin Regulation: The Histone Modifying Enzyme's Story, Jianlin Wang, Zhaoping Qiu, Yadi Wu Aug 2018

Ubiquitin Regulation: The Histone Modifying Enzyme's Story, Jianlin Wang, Zhaoping Qiu, Yadi Wu

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Histone post-translational modifications influence many fundamental cellular events by regulating chromatin structure and gene transcriptional activity. These modifications are highly dynamic and tightly controlled, with many enzymes devoted to the addition and removal of these modifications. Interestingly, these modifying enzymes are themselves fine-tuned and precisely regulated at the level of protein turnover by ubiquitin-proteasomal processing. Here, we focus on recent progress centered on the mechanisms regulating ubiquitination of histone modifying enzymes, including ubiquitin proteasomal degradation and the reverse process of deubiquitination. We will also discuss the potential pathophysiological significance of these processes.

Compressive Sampling For Phenotype Classification, Eric L. Brooks Aug 2018

Compressive Sampling For Phenotype Classification, Eric L. Brooks

Theses and Dissertations

Phenotype classification has become an increasingly important genomic research method for disease identification and treatment. Phenotype classification is the investigation into the genetic information concerned with locating biomarkers (features) in order to identify an observed effect. The primary challenge associated with phenotype classification is with analyzing the data due to the inherent high-dimensionality of DNA data. As a result, phenotype classification faces challenges with feature selection, and consequently, classification accuracy. This research developed a methodology to alleviate these challenges while improving classification performance. The methodology leverages concepts of compressive sampling, to arrive at a process that identifies features most relevant …

Let’S Never Forget: Extinction Is Forever, Aldemaro Romero Jr. Aug 2018

Let’S Never Forget: Extinction Is Forever, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

For many, the conservation of nature is seen as an essential component of human wellbeing. Its value is oftentimes referred to in relation to the four “Es”: economic, environmental, esthetic and ethical values.

From an economic viewpoint, we know that the entire pharmaceutical industry is built upon known natural substances we find in plants and animals, as are the varieties of many domesticated animals we use for food. On the environmental front, we know how essential it is for human health to have an abundant availability of clean water and air.

Esthetically speaking, natural areas represent one of the major …

Influences Of Egyptian Lotus Symbolism And Ritualistic Practices On Sacral Tree Worship In The Fertile Crescent From 1500 Bce To 200 Ce, J. Andrew Mcdonald Aug 2018

Influences Of Egyptian Lotus Symbolism And Ritualistic Practices On Sacral Tree Worship In The Fertile Crescent From 1500 Bce To 200 Ce, J. Andrew Mcdonald

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Many conventional features of world tree motifs in the ancient Near East—including stalked palmettes, aureoles of water lily palmettes connected by pliant stems, floral rosettes, winged disks and bud-and-blossom motifs—trace largely from Egyptian practices in lotus symbolism around 2500 BCE, more than a millennium before they appear, migrate and dominate plant symbolism across the Fertile Crescent from 1500 BCE to 200 CE. Several of these motifs were associated singularly or collectively with the Egyptian sema-taui and ankh signs to symbolize the eternal recurrence and everlasting lives of Nilotic lotus deities and deceased pharaohs. The widespread use of lotus imagery in …

Bayesian Variable Selection With Applications To Neuroimaging Data, Shariq Mohammed Aug 2018

Bayesian Variable Selection With Applications To Neuroimaging Data, Shariq Mohammed

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we discuss Bayesian modeling approaches for identifying brain regions that respond to certain stimulus and use them to classify subjects. We specifically deal with multi-subject electroencephalography (EEG) data where the responses are binary, and the covariates are matrices, with measurements taken for each subject at different locations across multiple time points. EEG data has a complex structure with both spatial and temporal attributes to it. We use a divide and conquer strategy to build multiple local models, that is, one model at each time point separately both, to avoid the curse of dimensionality and to achieve computational …

Bevacizumab: A Rare Cause Of Nonischemic Cardiomyopathy., Oreoluwa Oladiran, Salik Nazir

Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency

Left ventricular dysfunction is a rare side effect of bevacizumab occurring in 2-4% of cases. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department (ED) with sudden onset of shortness of breath, orthopnea, and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. She was tachypneic and in respiratory distress. Physical examination revealed jugular venous distention, diffuse expiratory wheeze, and bipedal edema. She had been started on bevacizumab for the treatment of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia 1 month prior to presentation. Laboratory tests revealed BNP of 1697 pg/ml with slightly elevated troponin 0.05 ng/ml. Chest X-ray showed interstitial edema with cardiomegaly, and …

Plasmonic-Ceria Nanoparticles As Fluorescence Intensity And Lifetime Quenching Optical Sensor, Nader Shehata, Effat Samir, Ishac Kandas Aug 2018

Plasmonic-Ceria Nanoparticles As Fluorescence Intensity And Lifetime Quenching Optical Sensor, Nader Shehata, Effat Samir, Ishac Kandas

Biology Faculty Publications

Ceria nanoparticles have been recently used as an optical fluorescent material with visible emission under ultraviolet excitation, due to the formation of trivalent cerium ions with corresponding oxygen vacancies. This paper introduces the enhancement of both fluorescence emission and lifetime through adding gold nanoparticles. The reason is due to possible coupling between the plasmonic resonance of gold nanoparticles and the fluorescence emission of ceria that has been achieved, along with enhanced formation of trivalent cerium ions. Both factors lead to higher fluorescence intensity peaks and shorter fluorescence lifetimes. As an application, gold-ceria nanoparticles have been used as an optical sensing …

A significant body of evidence has demonstrated that biodiversity stabilizes ecosystem functioning over time in grassland ecosystems. However, the relative importance of different facets of biodiversity underlying the diversity–stability relationship remains unclear. Here we used data from 39 biodiversity experiments and structural equation modeling to investigate the roles of species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and both the diversity and community-weighted mean of functional traits representing the ‘fast–slow’ leaf economics spectrum in driving the diversity–stability relationship. We found that high species richness and phylogenetic diversity stabilize biomass production via enhanced asynchrony. Contrary to our hypothesis, low phylogenetic diversity also enhances ecosystem stability …

Identification Of Three Required Positive Cis-Regulated Inputs Of The Sea Urchin Pigment Cell Gene Polyketide Synthase 1, Cristina Calestani, Preston Dean, Xiaoman Li

Georgia Journal of Science

Sea urchin pigment cells are single cells of mesodermal origin embedded in the aboral ectoderm. Strongylocentrotus purpuratus polyketide synthase 1 (Sp-PKS1) is required for the biosynthesis of the echinochrome pigment. Evidence suggests that pigment cells are immune cells. In order to reconstruct the gene regulatory network of pigment cells a bottom-up approach combined with comparative genomics has been used in this study. We compared the cis-regulatory regions of five pigment cell genes, Sp-Pks1, flavin monooxygenase 1, 2, and 3 (Sp-Fmo) and sulfotransferase (Sp-Sult), across three different species, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, Mesocentrotus franciscanus …
