There is ongoing interest for evaluating the potential of renewable base stocks, such as vegetable oils, to replace petroleum oils as metal quenchants. Perhaps the most critical part of this process is characterizing and comparing the cooling and heat transfer performance of potential quenchant candidates. In this work, cooling curves of two vegetable oils, palm oil and canola oil, were obtained along with a commercially available conventional and an accelerated petroleum quenchant using the so-called Tensi multiple thermocouple probe, with emphasis on the center probe emulating a small probe concept. The lumped-parameter approach was implemented in the MATLAB environment (Mathworks …

Understory Community Assembly Following Wildfire In Boreal Forests: Shift From Stochasticity To Competitive Exclusion And Environmental Filtering, Bo Liu, Han Y. H. Chen, Jian Yang
Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications
Understory vegetation accounts for the majority of plant species diversity and serves as a driver of overstory succession and nutrient cycling in boreal forest ecosystems. However, investigations of the underlying assembly processes of understory vegetation associated with stand development following a wildfire disturbance are rare, particularly in Eurasian boreal forests. In this study, we measured the phylogenetic and functional diversity and trait dispersions of understory communities and tested how these patterns changed with stand age in the Great Xing'an Mountains of Northeastern China. Contrary to our expectation, we found that understory functional traits were phylogenetically convergent. We found that random …

Metabolic Dependencies In Pancreatic Cancer., Ali Vaziri-Gohar, Mahsa Zarei, Jonathan R. Brody, Jordan M. Winter
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is a highly lethal cancer with a long-term survival rate under 10%. Available cytotoxic chemotherapies have significant side effects, and only marginal therapeutic efficacy. FDA approved drugs currently used against PDA target DNA metabolism and DNA integrity. However, alternative metabolic targets beyond DNA may prove to be much more effective. PDA cells are forced to live within a particularly severe microenvironment characterized by relative hypovascularity, hypoxia, and nutrient deprivation. Thus, PDA cells must possess biochemical flexibility in order to adapt to austere conditions. A better understanding of the metabolic dependencies required by PDA to survive and …
An Evaluation Of Extended Producer Responsibility (Epr) As A Policy Option For Compostable Plastics In California, Amy Franz
Master's Projects and Capstones
This research project evaluates Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in California as a viable option to address the end-of-life management challenges identified for compostable plastics. The evaluation is done in three ways (1) review the main challenges identified for managing compostable plastics against the existing California EPR laws for mercury thermostats, agricultural pesticide containers, carpet, paint and mattresses to look for overlap in issues EPR has been used to address, (2) review compostable plastics in the context of the Product Selection Criteria used by California, (3) Look at the California Framework for setting up an EPR program to lay out what …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
1. Species interactions are integral to ecological community function, and the structure of species interactions has repercussions for the consequences of species extinctions. Few studies have examined the role of environmental factors in controlling species interaction networks across time.
2. We examined variation in plant–grasshopper network structural properties in response to three major grassland drivers: periodic fire, ungulate grazing and climate.
3. We sequenced a plant barcoding gene from extracted grasshopper gut contents to characterize diets of 26 grasshopper species. Resulting grasshopper species’ diets were combined with long‐term plant and grasshopper surveys to assemble plant–grasshopper networks across 13–19 years for …

What is the limit of animal speed and what mechanisms produce the fastest movements? More than natural history trivia, the answer provides key insight into the form-function relationship of musculoskeletal movement and can determine the outcome of predator-prey interactions. The fastest known animal movements belong to arthropods, including trap-jaw ants, mantis shrimp and froghoppers, that have incorporated latches and springs into their appendage systems to overcome the limits of muscle power. In contrast to these examples of power amplification, where separate structures act as latch and spring to accelerate an appendage, some animals use a 'snap-jaw' mechanism that incorporates the …

Lower Limb Joint Angle Variability And Dimensionality Are Different In Stairmill Climbing And Treadmill Walking, Peter C. Raffalt, Srikant Vallabhajosula, Jessica Renz, Mukul Mukherjee, Nicholas Stergiou
Journal Articles
The present study tested if the quadratic relationship which exists between stepping frequency and gait dynamics in walking can be generalized to stairmill climbing. To accomplish this, we investigated the joint angle dynamics and variability during continuous stairmill climbing at stepping frequencies both above and below the preferred stepping frequency (PSF). Nine subjects performed stairmill climbing at 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120% PSF and treadmill walking at preferred walking speed during which sagittal hip, knee and ankle angles were extracted. Joint angle dynamics were quantified by the largest Lyapunov exponent (LyE) and correlation dimension (CoD). Joint angle variability was …
Whither The Functional Parent? Revisiting Equitable Parenthood Doctrines In Light Of Same-Sex Parents’ Increased Access To Obtaining Formal Legal Parent Status, Jessica Feinberg
Whither The Functional Parent? Revisiting Equitable Parenthood Doctrines In Light Of Same-Sex Parents’ Increased Access To Obtaining Formal Legal Parent Status, Jessica Feinberg
Brooklyn Law Review
Equitable parenthood doctrines generally provide rights relating to visitation or custody to an individual who has functioned as a child’s parent, but who is not recognized as a formal parent under existing law. These doctrines have played an essential role in protecting non-biological parents raising children within same-sex relationships, a group which historically has been excluded from the traditional avenues to establishing formal legal parent status based upon biology, marriage, and adoption. Over the past thirty years, a number of jurisdictions have adopted equitable parenthood doctrines to avoid the significant harm to children and unfairness that result from treating non-biological …

Assessment Of Topsoil Salvage And Seed Augmentation In The Restoration Of Coastal Sage Scrub On Santa Catalina Island, California, Peter J. Dixon
Assessment Of Topsoil Salvage And Seed Augmentation In The Restoration Of Coastal Sage Scrub On Santa Catalina Island, California, Peter J. Dixon
Western North American Naturalist
The Catalina Island Conservancy manages over 22,000 acres of coastal (California) sage scrub (CSS) habitat off the coast of Southern California, including much of the infrastructure, roads, and recreation associated with habitat disturbance. Restoration trials were initiated to establish best management practices for roadside and disturbed site revegetation under local site conditions. Site treatments compared excavated native subsoil and surface soil (±20 cm) reapplication practices with and without seed augmentation. Evaluation of native and nonnative germinants indicated that salvaged surface soil alone may not be sufficient to restore native cover. Seeding improved native cover and reduced establishment of nonnative species …

Biogeographic Patterns Among Seed-Bearing And Spore-Bearing Plants Across The California Channel Islands, Benjamin E. Carter, C. Matt Guilliams
Western North American Naturalist
Spore-bearing and seed-bearing plants differ in their ability to colonize islands from mainland sources. To assess the importance of these differences, we investigated patterns of species richness and species composition for the native bryophyte, fern, and seed plant floras of the California Channel Islands. Native richness was regressed against island area, maximum elevation, distance to mainland, distance to nearest propagule source along prevailing wind trajectories, and latitude for the 3 plant groups. Ordinations, Mantel tests, randomization tests, and an analysis partitioning beta diversity into turnover and nestedness components were used to identify similarities and differences in species composition across the …

α-Hydroxyisovaleric acid (Ac-Hiv) and α-acetyloxyisovaleric acid (Ac-Hiv) have been successfully synthesized through a diazotisation of amino acid using sodium nitrite with the catalyst of sulfuric acid and acetic acid, respectively. In the synthesis of Hiv, Zubia et al. (2005) mentioned that 3 equivalents of sodium nitrite for the reaction gave the hydroxy acid with a good yield. However, Cohen-Arazi et al. (2008) described that 6 equivalents of sodium nitrite resulted the highest yield. In present study, a variation of equivalents of sodium nitrite (3, 4, 5, 6 eq.) were trialed for the same method of synthesis. Through several experiments, we …

Bacterial and eukaryotic nuclear RNA polymerases (RNAPs) cap RNA with the oxidized and reduced forms of the metabolic effector nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, NAD+ and NADH, using NAD+ and NADH as non-canonical initiating nucleotides for transcription initiation. Here, we show that mitochondrial RNAPs (mtRNAPs) cap RNA with NAD+ and NADH, and do so more efficiently than nuclear RNAPs. Direct quantitation of NAD+- and NADH-capped RNA demonstrates remarkably high levels of capping in vivo: up to ~60% NAD+ and NADH capping of yeast mitochondrial transcripts, and up to ~15% NAD+ capping of human mitochondrial transcripts. The capping efficiency is determined by promoter …

Weak Iron Oxidation By Sulfobacillus Thermosulfidooxidans Maintains A Favorable Redox Potential For Chalcopyrite Bioleaching, S Christel, M Herold, S Bellenberg, A Buetti-Dinh, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Bioleaching is an emerging technology, describing the microbially assisted dissolution of sulfidic ores that provides a more environmentally friendly alternative to many traditional metal extraction methods, such as roasting or smelting. Industrial interest is steadily increasing and today, circa 15–20% of the world’s copper production can be traced back to this method. However, bioleaching of the world’s most abundant copper mineral chalcopyrite suffers from low dissolution rates, often attributed to passivating layers, which need to be overcome to use this technology to its full potential. To prevent these passivating layers from forming, leaching needs to occur at a low oxidation/reduction …

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development
This article specifically addresses the country of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the very important issues pertaining to LGB individuals in Iran and their migration process. LGB individuals suffer from human rights violations and are denied the basic freedom of being who they are due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Faced with official intransigence many LGB are compelled to escape persecution in their countries of origin and seek refuge in countries that provide them greater protection. Their sexual orientation becomes an issue when seeking asylum. This article explores the relationship between gender and the migration process. The …
Accurate Economics To Protect Endangered Species And Their Critical Habitats, Jacob P. Byl
Accurate Economics To Protect Endangered Species And Their Critical Habitats, Jacob P. Byl
Pace Environmental Law Review
Federal agencies currently use a methodology that finds negligible benefits of protecting critical habitat for endangered species, despite the prime real estate that is often involved. The Endangered Species Act already calls for economic analysis, but agencies currently treat it as a meaningless hoop to jump through. Agencies justify this hollow exercise by pointing to the difficulty in quantifying the increment of added protection that comes with critical habitat designation. However, the increment of added protection for critical habitat can be measured using methods already employed by agencies in other environmental analyses. Although the central benefits of critical habitat are …
Bringing The European Eel Back From The Brink: The Need For A New Agreement Under The Convention On Migratory Species, Chris Wold
Pace Environmental Law Review
The European eel is considered “Critically Endangered.” Its population has been declining due to overutilization, barriers to migration such as dams, pollution, and climate change. The international community has responded by including the European eel in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (“CITES”) to regulate international trade and Appendix II of the Convention on Migratory Species (“CMS”) to help improve the species conservation status. The EU has taken regional action to prohibit imports into and exports from EU Member States, although intra-EU trade is permissible. Despite these actions, the eel’s conservation status might not be …
