Extracellular Interactions Between Fibulins And Transforming Growth Factor (Tgf)-Β In Physiological And Pathological Conditions., Takeshi Tsuda
Extracellular Interactions Between Fibulins And Transforming Growth Factor (Tgf)-Β In Physiological And Pathological Conditions., Takeshi Tsuda
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is a multifunctional peptide growth factor that has a vital role in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, inflammation, and repair in a variety of tissues, and its dysregulation mediates a number of pathological conditions including fibrotic disorders, chronic inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer progression. Regulation of TGF-β signaling is multifold, but one critical site of regulation is via interaction with certain extracellular matrix (ECM) microenvironments, as TGF-β is primarily secreted as a biologically inactive form sequestrated into ECM. Several ECM proteins are known to modulate TGF-β signaling via cell⁻matrix interactions, including thrombospondins, SPARC (Secreted Protein …

Cysteine As An Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor, Hany A. Elazab Dr
Chemical Engineering
In this paper, the aim was finding the most efficient corrosion inhibitor for mild steel placed in a 0.5M Sulfuric acid. The comparison was implemented between Cysteine (an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor) and 4 different Ions-Cysteine Inhibitors (Copper- Cysteine, Nickel-Cysteine, Iron-Cysteine, and Cobalt-Cysteine). The solutions were prepared and evaluated while placed with a working electrode of mild steel with a copper rod attached to its end. To determine the best eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors two experiments were implemented: Electrochemical Impedance Spectra, and Linear Polarization. By the end of the experiment it was found that Copper- Cysteine was the most efficient eco-friendly corrosion …
Heritability And Genetic Associations Of Triglyceride And Hdl-C Levels Using Pedigree-Based And Empirical Kinships, Nicholas B. Blackburn, Arthur Porto, Juan M. Peralta, John Blangero
Heritability And Genetic Associations Of Triglyceride And Hdl-C Levels Using Pedigree-Based And Empirical Kinships, Nicholas B. Blackburn, Arthur Porto, Juan M. Peralta, John Blangero
School of Medicine Publications
The heritability of a phenotype is an estimation of the percent of variance in that phenotype that is attributable to additive genetic factors. Heritability is optimally estimated in family-based sample populations. Traditionally, this involves use of a pedigree-based kinship coefficient generated from the collected genealogical relationships between family members. An alternative, when dense genotype data are available, is to directly measure the empirical kinship between samples. This study compares the use of pedigree and empirical kinships in the GAW20 data set. Two phenotypes were assessed: triglyceride levels and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels pre- and postintervention with the cholesterol-reducing drug …

Sequencing Complete Genome Of Cutthroat Trout Subspecies For Purposes Of Improving Classification Of Cutthroat Trout Species, Emily Brown, Dr. Dennis Shiozawa
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Since the 1800s, biologists have studied cutthroat trout native to Western North America. Their early work and classification were based on the standards of the day: meristics, the observation and counting of physical features, and morphology. Further improvements came through later studies that added geographic distribution to their phylogenetic classification. Without the foresight of DNA genotyping methods, “traditional taxonomic assessments often failed to accurately capture phylogenetic diversity.” Many discrepancies have since arisen as genetic methods shed new light on cutthroat trout subspecies phylogenies. Current mtDNA work has identified errors in historical classifications of several of these subspecies in the Colorado, …
An Efficient Method For Generating Conditional Cell Lines For Cellular And Molecular Research, Mark Roth, Dr. Jonathan Alder
An Efficient Method For Generating Conditional Cell Lines For Cellular And Molecular Research, Mark Roth, Dr. Jonathan Alder
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Conditional cell lines are widely used throughout biochemical research. The basic concept is that you can delete a gene you are studying upon the addition of a drug, to cells in culture, and then use the knockout cells to study the genes effects. This process has been facilitated by the advent of the CRISPR/Cas9 system that allows a broad range of genome editing in living cells. Cas9 introduces a double strand break in DNA at a site specified by the CRISPR (guide RNA), and by changing the CRISPR sequence researchers can introduce these double strand breaks almost wherever they want. …

With the daily release of data from whole genome sequencing projects, tools to facilitate comparative studies are hard-pressed to keep pace. Graphical software solutions can readily recognize synteny by measuring similarities between sequences. Nevertheless, regions of dissimilarity can prove to be equally informative; these regions may harbor genes acquired via lateral gene transfer (LGT), signify gene loss or gain, or include coding regions under strong selection. Previously, we developed the software S-plot. This tool employed an alignment-free approach for comparing bacterial genomes and generated a heatmap representing the genomes’ similarities and dissimilarities in nucleotide usage. In prior studies, this tool …

Background
Longitudinal data and repeated measurements in epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) provide a rich resource for understanding epigenetics. We summarize 7 analytical approaches to the GAW20 data sets that addressed challenges and potential applications of phenotypic and epigenetic data. All contributions used the GAW20 real data set and employed either linear mixed effect (LME) models or marginal models through generalized estimating equations (GEE). These contributions were subdivided into 3 categories: (a) quality control (QC) methods for DNA methylation data; (b) heritability estimates pretreatment and posttreatment with fenofibrate; and (c) impact of drug response pretreatment and posttreatment with fenofibrate on DNA …

Precipitation regimes are changing in response to climate change, yet understanding of how forest ecosystems respond to extreme droughts and pluvials remains incomplete. As future precipitation extremes will likely fall outside the range of historical variability, precipitation manipulation experiments (PMEs) are critical to advancing knowledge about potential ecosystem responses. However, few PMEs have been conducted in forests compared to short-statured ecosystems, and forest PMEs have unique design requirements and constraints. Moreover, past forest PMEs have lacked coordination, limiting cross-site comparisons. Here, we review and synthesize approaches, challenges, and opportunities for conducting PMEs in forests, with the goal of guiding design …

Assessment Of Macroinvertebrate Communities And Food Availability For The Larval Eastern Hellbender Salamander (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis) In Northern Georgia, Sierra Belle Kincaid, Thomas Floyd, Shem Unger
Georgia Journal of Science
Macroinvertebrates are indicators of stream health and environmental change, and form complex communities in aquatic ecosystems. In addition to their role as indicators of stream health, they also provide a valuable food source for many juvenile salamanders, including the Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), a species of special conservation concern in Georgia. Therefore, macroinvertebrate diversity is not only an essential indicator of stream health, but also provides additional information on food availability for larval hellbender salamanders, a largely unknown life history stage for the species. We sampled during July of 2016, and report on the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera …
