Chemical Analysis Of Precipitation And Stormwater Runoff From A Large Green Roof, Kimberly Fitzgerald, Alexander Johnson, Cliff I. Davidson
International Building Physics Conference 2018
The growth medium of a green roof is likely to affect the chemistry of the rainwater passing through it, which may impact the receiving waters. Currently only limited data exist on the changes in rain chemistry caused by green roofs. The objectives of this project are to determine the differences in concentration of several contaminants in rain and in runoff from a green roof in downtown Syracuse, NY, and to explore reasons for the observed differences. A few samples were collected in 2014 and 2016, but most of the data are from 2017. Collection of precipitation uses funnels, while collection …

Long Term Measurements And Ham Modelling Of An Interior Insulation Solution For An Office Building In Cold Climate, Paul Klõšeiko, Targo Kalamees
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Excessive mould damage was detected in an office building in Northern Europe and thus a renovation need was established. This paper studies a renovation solution using measurements and heat, air & moisture (HAM) modelling. Polyurethane (PUR) foam was used to fill the air gap in masonry while capillary active calcium silicate (CaSi) insulation was used on the interior surface at thermal bridges. During renovation works temperature and relative humidity (t&RH) and heat flux sensors were installed throughout the wall. Nearly 3 years of measurements are presented. Average thermal transmittance (U) of the wall was reduced around 3 times. While the …

Understanding Swelling Of Wood Through Multiscale Modeling, Dominique Derome, Chi Zhang, Mingyang Chen, Jan Carmeliet
Understanding Swelling Of Wood Through Multiscale Modeling, Dominique Derome, Chi Zhang, Mingyang Chen, Jan Carmeliet
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Wood is a well-used building material where the capacity of wood to absorb water leads to swelling and reduced mechanical properties, and also to questions of durability. The origin of the hygroscopic behavior of wood lies at the nanoscale material that composes its cell walls. Using atomistic modeling, we study the hygromechanical behavior of the different polymeric components of wood, separately and in aggregate configurations. We report the coupled effects of water sorption on the hygric and mechanical properties of the S2 cell wall layer and we upscale the findings using a poromechanical framework.

Movements Of Translocated And Nontranslocated Canada Geese In Georgia Estimated Using Band Recoveries, Morgan S. Donaldson, Gregory D. Balkcom, Michael J. Chamberlain
Georgia Journal of Science
Overabundant populations of resident Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are an increasing source of human-wildlife complaints throughout the species’ range. Many resident geese exploit urban areas, and translocation is one method of reducing nuisance problems associated with resident Canada geese. Translocated geese have similar harvest rates but lower survival rates than nontranslocated geese. To examine relationships between distance moved and the age, sex, and status of geese, we evaluated distances from banding sites to recovery sites for resident geese banded in Georgia, USA, during 2001–2015. We assessed potential differences in movements between rural and urban, and nontranslocated and translocated geese, …

The Green Roof on the Onondaga County Convention Center in Syracuse, NY is planted with several varieties of sedum over an area of 0.56 hectares. The roof was constructed in 2011, and has been instrumented with sensors to enable research and education over an extended period. The purpose of the current work on this roof is to quantify its performance with respect to water storage and energy transfer, and to identify chemical constituents in the runoff that might be contributed by the growth medium. The scope of the project also includes a number of measurements on traditional roofs in the …
Comparing Exterior Wall Finishes Using Life-Cycle Assessment, Brandi Dodge, Rui Liu
Comparing Exterior Wall Finishes Using Life-Cycle Assessment, Brandi Dodge, Rui Liu
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Selecting products that are environmentally friendly can help reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with the built environment. However, the process can be difficult. Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is an approach used to measure the environmental performance of a product or service by considering all stages of a product’s life-cycle from extraction of raw materials to its end of life. Many products that claim to be environmentally friendly are based on a single life-cycle stage or environmental impact. These claims are often misleading as they do not consider other life-cycle stages or other environmental impacts associated with the products. This study …

Experimental Study On The Stomatal Resistance Of Green Roof Vegetation Of Semiarid Climates For Building Energy Simulations, Ursula Steinfort, Rocío Arriola-Cepeda, Sergio Vera, Francisco Albornoz
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Current modelling approaches for energy simulations in green roofs use a range of values for parameters such as stomatal resistance (rs) of the vegetation. rs reflects the capability of a plant to transpire, thus it has a direct relation to the cooling potential of green roofs in buildings. Therefore, rs values need to be revised based on differences among species and contrasting environmental conditions, considering anatomical and physiological characteristics among species and their changes throughout the day. In order to provide real data on species commonly used for green roofs in semiarid climates, this paper aims to evaluate the stomatal …

Mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from bone marrow (BM) to peripheral blood (PB) by cytokine granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) or the chemical antagonist of CXCR4, AMD3100, is important in the treatment of blood diseases. Due to clinical conditions of each application, there is a need for continued improvement of HSC mobilization regimens. Previous studies have shown that genetic ablation of the Rho GTPase Cdc42 in HSCs results in their mobilization without affecting survival. Here we rationally identified a Cdc42 activity-specific inhibitor (CASIN) that can bind to Cdc42 with submicromolar affinity and competitively interfere with guanine nucleotide exchange activity. CASIN …

Polymer Interfaces And Biopharmaceuticals: Chemistry, Designs And Challenges, David W. Grainger
Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements
The complex interactions between biological components and polymer materials has an extensive technical history. Virtually every surface property has been invoked as being important to biological interfacial response: texture, roughness, topology, porosity, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, polar, apolar, (non)-wettable, non-fouling brushes, surface mobility, rigidity, flexibility, crystalline versus amorphous, aspect ratio. Few surface properties alone, however, provide consistent, global technical solutions to vexing biomedical technology problems, particularly with cell culture, blood, plasma, microbial milieu, and protein solutions. Bio-interface materials performance must therefore be tailored specifically to each application. Short-term contact use (minutes/hours) has different materials interface requirements than long-term (days) use; globular proteins …

Multiple Puf Proteins Regulate The Stability Of Ribosome Biogenesis Transcripts, Anthony Fischer, Wendy Olivas
Biology Department Faculty Works
Cells must make careful use of the resources available to them. A key area of cellular regulation involves the biogenesis of ribosomes. Transcriptional regulation of ribosome biogenesis factor genes through alterations in histone acetylation has been well studied. This work identifies a post-transcriptional mechanism of ribosome biogenesis regulation by Puf protein control of mRNA stability. Puf proteins are eukaryotic mRNA binding proteins that play regulatory roles in mRNA degradation and translation via association with specific conserved elements in the 3ʹ untranslated region (UTR) of target mRNAs and with degradation and translation factors. We demonstrate that several ribosome biogenesis factor mRNAs …

Publications and Research
We introduce ABLE (Approximate Blockwise Likelihood Estimation), a novel simulation-based composite likelihood method that uses the blockwise site frequency spectrum to jointly infer past demography and recombination. ABLE is explicitly designed for a wide variety of data from unphased diploid genomes to genome-wide multi-locus data (for example, RADSeq) and can also accommodate arbitrarily large samples. We use simulations to demonstrate the accuracy of this method to infer complex histories of divergence and gene flow and reanalyze whole genome data from two species of orangutan. ABLE is available for download at https://github.com/champost/ABLE.

Lung cancer has several genetic associations identified within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC); although the basis for these associations remains elusive. Here, we analyze MHC genetic variation among 26,044 lung cancer patients and 20,836 controls densely genotyped across the MHC, using the Illumina Illumina OncoArray or Illumina 660W SNP microarray. We impute sequence variation in classical HLA genes, fine-map MHC associations for lung cancer risk with major histologies and compare results between ethnicities. Independent and novel associations within HLA genes are identified in Europeans including amino acids in the HLA-B*0801 peptide binding groove and an independent HLA-DQB1*06 loci group. In …

Background: Tissue regeneration is widely distributed across the tree of life. Among vertebrates, salamanders possess an exceptional ability to regenerate amputated limbs and other complex structures. Thus far, molecular insights about limb regeneration have come from a relatively limited number of species from two closely related salamander families. To gain a broader perspective on the molecular basis of limb regeneration and enhance the molecular toolkit of an emerging plethodontid salamander (Bolitoglossa ramosi), we used RNA-Seq to generate a de novo reference transcriptome and identify differentially expressed genes during limb regeneration.

Automated Foam Control In Single-Use Bioreactors Using The Single Use Foam Probe, Jordan Cobia, Ben Madsen, Emilee Madsen, Alex Hodge
Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements
Headspace foam in bioreactors can cause significant issues to a biological process among which are unfavorable metabolic conditions for cells, increased shear from bursting bubbles, cell death/entrainment, mass transfer interference and potential fouling of exhaust filters which can allow a point of entry for contamination or lead to pressure build-up and possible failure of the bioprocess container. This study investigates the efficacy of using a single use foam probe coupled with an automated response of an antifoam addition with an integrated DeltaV controller. Two 50L S.U.B.s run in parallel clearly illustrate differences; the first employing foam control using the foam …

Copyright © 2018 American Chemical Society. Mobilization of iron from bacterioferritin (BfrB) requires specific interactions with a [2Fe-2S] ferredoxin (Bfd). Blocking the BfrB:Bfd interaction results in irreversible iron accumulation in BfrB and iron deficiency in the cytosol [Eshelman, K., et al. (2017) Metallomics 9, 646-659]. The only known Bfd structure, which was obtained in complex with BfrB (Protein Data Bank entry 4E6K), indicated a new fold and suggested that the stability of Bfd is aided by an anion binding site consisting of R26, R29, and K46. We investigated the Bfd fold using site-directed mutagenesis, X-ray crystallography, and biochemistry in solution. …

Changing climate will impact species’ ranges only when environmental variability directly impacts the demography of local populations. However, measurement of demographic responses to climate change has largely been limited to single species and locations. Here we show that amphibian communities are responsive to climatic variability, using > 500,000 time-series observations for 81 species across 86 North American study areas. The effect of climate on local colonization and persistence probabilities varies among eco-regions and depends on local climate, species life-histories, and taxonomic classification. We found that local species richness is most sensitive to changes in water availability during breeding and changes in …
