Correlation Between Music And Preliteracy Skills In Preschool Age Children, Katherine G. Swierk
Correlation Between Music And Preliteracy Skills In Preschool Age Children, Katherine G. Swierk
Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)
Is there a relationship between music and knowledge? If there is evidence that music is influential for processing complex cognitive information, it is reasonable to consider that if children are exposed to music early, it will help them develop literary skills. In the last decade, researchers have paid more attention to possible relationships between musical-rhythmical skills and reading acquisition. Our study chose to focus on the relationship between music and literacy development in preschool children. We hypothesized that since both music and reading involve the sequential processing of units of information, there must be a positive correlation between musical-rhythmical skills …
Efficaciousness Of Mindfulness Interventions For Trauma Using Psychophysiological Measures: A Review, Sherief Y. Eldeeb
Efficaciousness Of Mindfulness Interventions For Trauma Using Psychophysiological Measures: A Review, Sherief Y. Eldeeb
Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)
In recent decades the efficaciousness of mindfulness has been proven in a wide variety of contexts, but some crucial populations remain understudied. This review critically examines the literature on mindfulness in individuals with trauma using psychophysiological measures. Psychophysiological measures offer critical insight into this intersection of mindfulness and trauma due to the known somatic components in each, as well as serving as an objective response. Mindfulness-based treatments seem to show great promise in treating trauma, however there are significant limitations in the literature. Future studies should standardize the minimum length of treatment, utilize gender-balanced and ethnically diverse samples, and introduce …

A Holistic Decision Support Tool For Façade Design, Sinem Kultur, Nil Turkeri, Ulrich Knaack
International Building Physics Conference 2018
The aim of this paper is to present a tool which will support decision-makers of façade design process while giving decisions on façade parameters to consider their interactions with functional performance issues. The tool is believed to contribute the holistic design of facades which is lacking in existing literature. The functional performance aspects included in the tool are structural, fire, water related, air permeability related, thermal, moisture related, daylighting, and acoustic performances. Façade parameters that are taken as the main decision subjects within the tool are orientation, transparency ratio, façade type, window type, glazing, framing, solar control, wall configuration, finishing, …

Condensation-Free Radiant Cooling Using Infrared-Transparent Enclosures Of Chilled Panels, Eric Teitelbaum, Adam Rysanek, Jovan Pantelic, Dorit Aviv, Simon Obelz, Alexander Buff, Yongqiang Luo, Forrest Meggers
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Radiant cooling power in the humid climates is inherently limited by condensation. This research investigates a type of radiant cooling methodology whereby the cold temperature source is convectively and conductively isolated from the environment with a membrane transparent to visible radiation to allow supply temperatures to be decreased for radiant cooling systems in humid climates. We conduct an FTIR analysis on three candidate membrane materials and fabricate a prototype experimental test panel that allows for thermal performance evaluation at different panel orientation and depths. Our study shows that for a 5 °C chilled panel temperature, the exterior membrane surface temperature …

The Effect Of The Position And Temperature Difference Of Local Radiant Asymmetry On Thermal Comfort: An Experimental Investigation, Stijn Van Craenendonck, Leen Lauriks, Cedric Vuye, Jarl Kampen
International Building Physics Conference 2018
In cold and moderate climates, poorly designed construction joints can lead to local low surface temperatures, which entails local radiant asymmetry. An experiment was set up to test the hypothesis that overall and local thermal sensation is influenced by temperature difference, and position and distance of local radiant asymmetry. In the experiment, 18 subjects participated where they were introduced in a room at 21°C and 45% relative humidity. The subjects were exposed to local radiant asymmetry created by a cooling plate. This plate was positioned at three different heights, and controlled for temperatures at 3, 6 or 10°C below room …

Evaluation Of The Physical Interpretability Of Calibrated Building Model Parameters, Sarah Juricic, Simon Rouchier, Aurélie Foucquier, Gilles Fraisse
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Identifying building envelope thermal properties from the calibration of a lumped model raises identifiability issues. Not only needs the simplified model to be structurally identifiable, i.e. deliver unique estimates after calibration, but also the data used might not be informative enough to result in either or both accurate estimates and physically interpretable values. This could particularly be the case when data is extracted from non intrusive in situ measurements, in the sense not disturbing potential occupancy. In this frame, this paper develops a method to investigate the physical interpretation of the parameters of lumped models through a numerical tests procedure. …
How Auditory And Visual Working Memory Tasks Affect Misophonic Response Levels, Erin Ansusinha, Melette Devore, Dr. Daniel Corts
How Auditory And Visual Working Memory Tasks Affect Misophonic Response Levels, Erin Ansusinha, Melette Devore, Dr. Daniel Corts
Celebration of Learning
Misophonia is characterized by an extreme aversion towards auditory triggers, such as chewing, tapping, and other repetitive sounds, making ignoring or directing attention away from the sounds nearly impossible. It is not classified as a psychological disorder, but it is associated with significant, reflexive emotional disturbances. Studies have shown that the anterior insular cortex (AIC), an area involved in detecting irregularities or errors, functions differently in people with misophonia, which translates to difficulty in controlling emotional reactions. The present study examines how misophonic reactions might interact with cognition with particular attention to how cognitive demands may exacerbate the emotional response. …

Revisions To The Classification, Nomenclature, And Diversity Of Eukaryotes, Christopher E. Lane, Et Al
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
This revision of the classification of eukaryotes follows that of Adl et al., 2012 [J. Euk. Microbiol. 59(5)] and retains an emphasis on protists. Changes since have improved the resolution of many nodes in phylogenetic analyses. For some clades even families are being clearly resolved. As we had predicted, environmental sampling in the intervening years has massively increased the genetic information at hand. Consequently, we have discovered novel clades, exciting new genera and uncovered a massive species level diversity beyond the morphological species descriptions. Several clades known from environmental samples only have now found their home. Sampling soils, …

Using Abrasive Grit For Weed Management In Field Crops, Michael Carlson, Frank Forcella, Sam Wortman, Sharon A. Clay
Using Abrasive Grit For Weed Management In Field Crops, Michael Carlson, Frank Forcella, Sam Wortman, Sharon A. Clay
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Abrasive grit, applied at high pressure and directed at plant base, can control weeds and increase yield. We evaluated fertilizer [pelletized turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) litter] and non-fertilizer [walnut (Juglans regia) shell] grits for maize and soybean in-row (IR) weed management. Grits were applied at V1 and V5 of maize, and V1 and V3 of soybean. Between-row weed cultivation was done alone (BR), or in combination with grit (I/B), after grit application. Small weeds (<4 >cm) were controlled after grit treatment, but, larger broadleaf weeds, grass weeds (treated when growing points were below ground), and later emerging …4>

Single-Use And Sustainability: Continued Studies Using Lca Tools, William Whitford
Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements
The issue of plastic materials in our environment has been of recent interest. The biotechnology community has responded by examining the effects of single-use systems employed in biomanufacturing. It is natural to emphasize a particular set of environmental concerns over others, and especially the more visible ones. But, in supporting truly sustainable manufacturing systems, it is important to consider all relevant types of pollution or environmental stress. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a science-based approach for evaluating the environmental impacts, benefits, trade-offs, and burden shifts of a process in an objective format. It considers production process’ materials, equipment and …
The Emerging Role Of Neurodiagnostic Informatics In Integrated Neurological And Mental Health Care, William Bosl
The Emerging Role Of Neurodiagnostic Informatics In Integrated Neurological And Mental Health Care, William Bosl
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
Mental, neurological, and neurodevelopmental (MNN) disorders impose an enormous burden of disease globally. Many MNN disorders follow a developmental trajectory. Thus, defining symptoms of MNN disorders may be conceived as the end product of a long developmental process. Many pharmaceutical therapies are aimed at the end symptoms, essentially attempting to reverse pathological brain function that has developed over a long time. A new paradigm is needed to leverage the developmental trajectory of MNN disorders, based on measuring brain function through the life span. Electroencephalography (EEG) is ideally suited for this task. New developments in several fields, including consumer EEG hardware, …

Section of Neurosurgery
Background: Worldwide, traumatic brain injury (TBI) kills or hospitalises over 10 million people each year. Early intracranial bleeding is common after TBI, increasing the risk of death and disability. Tranexamic acid reduces blood loss in surgery and death due to bleeding in trauma patients with extra-cranial injury. Early administration of tranexamic acid in TBI patients might limit intracranial bleeding, reducing death and disability. The CRASH-3 trial aims to provide evidence on the effect of tranexamic acid on death and disability in TBI patients. We will randomly allocate about 13,000 TBI patients (approximately 10,000 within 3 hours of injury) to an …

Resiliency And Adolescent Motherhood In The Context Of Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Brad Forenxa, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews
Social Work Faculty Publications
The purpose of the current study was to explore how adolescent mothers experienced pregnancy and parenthood within the context of residential foster care. Adolescent mothers in foster care are a vulnerable population although little research has explored their experiences, particularly from a resiliency framework. The present study begins to fill this gap by conducting focus group interviews with 39 adolescent mothers living in residential foster care. Using thematic analytic methodology, we uncovered themes that highlighted not only the mothers’ struggles, but also their capacities for resilience. Specifically, the mothers experienced societal stigma, parenting judgment, and challenging relationships with their child(ren)’s …

Nanoparticles As Multimodal Photon Transducers Of Ionizing Radiation, Edwin C. Pratt, Travis M. Shaffer, Qize Zhang, Charles Michael Drain, Jan Grimm
Publications and Research
In biomedical imaging, nanoparticles combined with radionuclides that generate Cerenkov luminescence are used in diagnostic imaging, photon-induced therapies, and as activatable probes. In these applications, the nanoparticle is often viewed as a carrier inert to ionizing radiation from the radionuclide. However, certain phenomena such as enhanced nanoparticle luminescence and generation of reactive oxygen species cannot be explained by only Cerenkov luminescence interactions with nanoparticles. Herein, we report methods to examine the mechanisms of nanoparticle excitation by radionuclides, including interactions with Cerenkov luminescence, β particles, and γ radiation. We demonstrate that β scintillation contributes appreciably to excitation and reactivity in certain …

Habitat Preferences Of Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans) And Black Marlin (Istiompax Indica) In The Eastern Pacific Ocean, Nima Farchadi, Michael G. Hinton, Andrew R. Thompson, Zhi-Yong Yin
Theses
Overexploitation and climate change can reduce the abundance and shift the spatial distribution of marine species. Determining the habitat suitability of a mobile pelagic species, such as Makaira nigricans (BUM) and Istiompax indica (BLM), can help describe their spatiotemporal distribution patterns over a broad spatial scale, which is a crucial need for fisheries management. Using 14 years (1997-2010) of Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) catch data from purse-seine vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO), we modeled the dynamic habitat suitability of BUM and BLM in response to environmental variables within the EPO using a species distribution model (MaxEnt) with …

Endotoxin is a bioaerosol component that is known to cause respiratory effects in exposed populations. To date, most research focused on occupational exposure, whilst much less is known about the impact of emissions from industrial operations on downwind endotoxin concentrations. A review of the literature was undertaken, identifying studies that reported endotoxin concentrations in both ambient environments and around sources with high endotoxin emissions. Ambient endotoxin concentrations in both rural and urban areas are generally below 10 endotoxin units (EU) m−3; however, around significant sources such as compost facilities, farms, and wastewater treatment plants, endotoxin concentrations regularly exceeded 100 EU …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Comparative flame retardancy of micro wood fiber plastic composites (WPCs) with fire retardants (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane, metal hydroxides and nanoclay) was studied. The fire additives (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane as well as magnesium hydroxide) obviously enhanced the fire retarding properties of WPCs. Especially, 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane significantly reduced the total heat release as well as heat release rate. In addition, a synergistic effect of 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) and nanoclay was achieved for the enhanced fire retarding performance of WPCs.

Charleston Library Conference
The figure of the scholarly workflow is common in studies of scholarly communications. Accounts and images of the workflow, based on surveys, interviews, ethnography, and scholarly autobiography, have identified the sequence of steps in research. This paper explains what is common to such work, how configurations of information behavior differ in representing the newest technologies, and thus how the workflow is being freshly interpreted and made part of library practices. Altogether, the workflow, as it has been understood and as it is being remade, is a format for understanding how scholarly communications reflect the individual, disciplinary, and institutional conditions of …

How Difficult Can It Be? Creating An Integrated Network Among Library Stakeholders To Promote Electronic Access, Denise M. Branch, Anne-Marie H. Viola, Jamie Gieseck-Ashworth, Benjamin C. Johnson
Charleston Library Conference
Tracking electronic access is a major challenge for libraries that cannot be ignored. Vast quantities of electronic resources continue to be acquired, and libraries continue to seek a way to keep up with the evolving electronic resource ecosystem.
Libraries are immersed in monitoring electronic resources for access performance, features, functionality, completeness of content, and usage. Publishers, providers, and vendors are immersed in their innovative business models. Users are immersed in their research needs. With these immersion silos, there is a lack of communication between stakeholders that creates an unsustainable ecosystem.
Currently, stakeholders are creating piecemeal patches that partially address access …
