Taxonomy And Systematics Of Dragon Millipedes Genus Desmoxytes Chamberlin, 1923 In Thailand, Ruttapon Srisonchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Taxonomy and systematics of the dragon millipede genus Desmoxytes sensu Golovatch & Enghoff (1994) (= Desmoxytes s.l.) of the family Paradoxosomatidae has been analyzed and implemented based on an integrative approach by morphological revision and molecular phylogeny from three partial genes (COI, 16S rRNA and 28S rRNA). The specimens were collected mainly from Thailand and neighboring countries in mainland Southeast Asia, and were compared with available type material. Taxonomic revision resulted in the subdivision of Desmoxytes s.l. into five genera, viz., Desmoxytes s.s., Hylomus stat. rev., Nagaxytes gen. nov., Gigaxytes gen. nov. and Spinaxytes gen. nov. All five genera showed …

Roles Of Sting In A Lupus Mouse Model Of Fcgr2b-Deficient Mice, Arthid Thim-Uam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease causing the immunological abnormalities leads to the production of autoantibodies, immune complex deposition and inflammatory cytokines that affect multiple organs. Type I interferon has been shown as one of the most crucial cytokines involving in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases such as SLE. Activation via nucleic acid sensors can induce the production of type I interferon from dendritic cells and promote SLE severity. Stimulator of interferon genes (Sting) is a cytoplasmic DNA sensor that signals downstream to enhance type I interferon production after its activation. Recently, it was shown that a …

Fluorescent Probes For Detection Of Aldehyde Compounds, Piyanan Pranee
Fluorescent Probes For Detection Of Aldehyde Compounds, Piyanan Pranee
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Long-chain aldehyde compounds such as hexanal, heptanal, octanal and nonanal are regarded as potential biomarkers of many lung cancer disease and served as the important quality indicators of fat and oil products. As advantage of the hydrophobic tails of hydrocarbon chain and hydrophilic head of aldehyde, we expected that long-chained aldehydes might act as the induced-fit surfactants to form the completely self-assembling organized nanomicelle. In this research, the nanomicellar probes for specific long-chain aldehyde compounds have been achieved in the challenge concept such that among aldehydes especially long-chain aldehyde compounds, would react with Naph-NH2 to form complete micelle-like particles via …
Styryl-Bodipy Fluorescent Sensors For Reactive Oxygen Species Detection In Cells, Suthikorn Jantra
Styryl-Bodipy Fluorescent Sensors For Reactive Oxygen Species Detection In Cells, Suthikorn Jantra
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Fluorescent probes are great tools for visualization and imaging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in living cells. Although several probes perform well with green emission, however, to maximize light penetration for tissue imaging and minimize interference from auto-fluorescence, a probe with longer wavelength is desirable. In this study, three new boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based fluorescent probes SB1, SB2 and SB4 have been developed for detection of ROS. Each probe has two styryl groups anchored to the BODIPY pyrrole rings to extend the emission wavelength into the red region (634–662 nm). Among them, we found that SB2 containing electron-rich p-hydroxyl styryl groups …

Oxidized Carbon Particles From Styrene, Titiporn Sansureerungsikul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
It has been reported the spherical shape of oxidized carbon nanoparticulates shows higher ability to penetrate phospholipid bilayer membrane than tubular and sheet shapes. However, the effect of the particle size on this membrane penetration ability have never been investigated. In this work, we synthesized various sizes of oxidized carbon spheres through a four steps process. Firstly, we adjusted the surfactants and styrene concentrations to prepare polystyrene of various sizes. Then, the polystyrene particles of selected sizes were hypercrosslinked via Frieldel-Craft alkylation reaction. After that, hypercrosslinked polystyreneparticles were pyrolyzed under N2 atmosphere to obtain carbon nanospheres of various sizes. The …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) involves the repeated administration of allergen products in order to induce clinical and immunologic tolerance to the offending allergen. The generation and maintenance of functional allergen-specific regulatory T (Treg) cells and regulatory B (Breg) cells are known in bee venom immunotherapy. However, in aeroallergen, house dust mite has not to be studied. The aim of the study is to identify the possible roles of Der p 1-specific active Treg (FOXP3+Helios+CD25+CD127-CD4+), ineffective Treg (ILT3-CD25+CD4+) and Breg (IL-10+IL-1RA+CD73-CD25+CD71+) cells changes during AIT and its correlation to treatment outcomes. We studied 25 allergic patients (20 responders and 5 non-responders) undergoing …

Disability Crossover: Is There A Hispanic Immigrant Health Advantage That Reverses From Working To Old Age?, Mara Getz Sheftel, Frank W. Heiland
Publications and Research
BACKGROUND Hispanic immigrants have been found to be more likely to have a disability than US-born populations. Studies have primarily focused on populations aged 60 and older; little is known about immigrant disability at younger ages.
OBJECTIVE Taking a broader perspective, we investigate whether Hispanic immigrants have lower disability rates in midlife; if so, at what ages this health advantage reverses; and the correlates of this pattern.
METHODS Using American Community Survey 2010–2014 data, we estimate age-specific disability prevalence rates by gender, nativity, education, and migration age from age 40 to 80. We also present estimates by six types of …

We present a general Bayesian hierarchical framework for conducting nonstationary frequency analysis of multiple hydrologic variables. In this, annual maxima from each variable are assumed to follow a generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution in which the location parameter is allowed to vary in time. A Gaussian elliptical copula is used to model the joint distribution of all variables. We demonstrate the utility of this framework with a joint frequency analysis model of annual peak snow water equivalent (SWE), annual peak flow, and annual peak reservoir elevation at Taylor Park dam in Colorado, USA. Indices of largescale climate drivers—El Ni~no Southern …

The aim of this experiment was to document the role of multiple internal clock mechanisms and external sources of temporal feedback on reducing timing variability when two fingers tap instead of one (a phenomenon known as the bimanual advantage). Previous research documents a reduction in timed interval variability when two effectors time instead of one. In addition, interval variability decreases with multiple sources of feedback. To date, however, no research has explored the separate roles of feedback and internal timing on the bimanual advantage. We evaluated the bimanual advantage in a task that does not utilise an internal clock (circle …

Geography
Predicting the seasonal dynamics of ecosystem carbon fluxes is challenging in broadleaved evergreen forests because of their moderate climates and subtle changes in canopy phenology. We assessed the climatic and biotic drivers of the seasonality of net ecosystem-atmosphere CO2 exchange (NEE) of a eucalyptus-dominated forest near Sydney, Australia, using the eddy covariance method. The climate is characterised by a mean annual precipitation of 800mm and a mean annual temperature of 18°C, hot summers and mild winters, with highly variable precipitation. In the 4-year study, the ecosystem was a sink each year (-225gCm-2yr-1 on average, with a standard deviation of 108gCm-2yr-1); …

Evaluating Wildlife Vulnerability To Mercury Pollution From Artisanal And Small-Scale Gold Mining In Madre De Dios, Peru, K. E. Markham, Florencia Sangermano
Geography
Illegal, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) often occurs in remote highly biodiverse areas, such as the Madre de Dios region of Peru. Mercury used in gold mining bioaccumulates in the environment and poses developmental, hormonal, and neurological threats to wildlife. The impact of ASGM on biodiversity remains largely unknown. We used geographic information science to create a spatial model of pollution risk from mining sites, in order to predict locations and species assemblages at risk. Multicriteria evaluation was used to determine how flow accumulation, distance from mining areas, total suspended sediment load, and soil porosity influenced the vulnerability of …

An Examination Of The Moderating Role Of Hormones On The Relationship Between Sleep Patterns And Mood Regulation, Claire A. Guderjahn
An Examination Of The Moderating Role Of Hormones On The Relationship Between Sleep Patterns And Mood Regulation, Claire A. Guderjahn
Honors Program Theses
A large body of research focuses on the relationship between sleep and mental health. Poor emotional regulation is costly to the individual’s physical and mental health as well as the wellbeing of the community and economy. To further understand emotional regulation, the current study examines the potential interaction of sleep patterns and hormones. The goal of the current study was to isolate the potentially moderating role of hormones, specifically epinephrine and norepinephrine, as moderators in the relationship of sleep patterns and emotional regulation. The hypotheses were that (1) there would be a strong positive relationship between sleep patterns and emotional …
