Neonatal Safety Information Reported To The Fda During Drug Development Studies., Debbie Avant, Gerri Baer, Jason N. Moore, Panli Zheng, Alfred Sorbello, Ron Ariagno, Lynne Yao, Gilbert J. Burckart, Jian Wang

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Relatively few neonatal drug development studies have been conducted, but an increase is expected with the enactment of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA). Understanding the safety of drugs studied in neonates is complicated by the unique nature of the population and the level of illness. The objective of this study was to examine neonatal safety data submitted to the FDA in studies pursuant to the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA) and the Pediatric Research Equity Act (PREA) between 1998 and 2015.

METHODS: FDA databases were searched for BPCA and/or PREA studies that enrolled …

Reading Achievement Of Middle School Boys In Single-Gender And Coeducational School, Jean Hunter-Batty Jan 2018

Reading Achievement Of Middle School Boys In Single-Gender And Coeducational School, Jean Hunter-Batty

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed in the study was the lack of evidence on the efficacy of the single-gender educational model as compared to the coeducational model in increasing reading achievement for middle school boys in the local school district. Leaders in the district implemented the single-gender model to address the problem of an ongoing reading achievement gap among middle school boys and girls. The gap has also been noted nationally and leads to limited reading-dependent opportunities for boys. The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare the two educational models to determine whether the single-gender model offered advantages over the …

Gender, Anthropology, And Sexuality In New Testament Perspective: Implications For Transgenderism, Larry L. Lichtenwalter Jan 2018

Gender, Anthropology, And Sexuality In New Testament Perspective: Implications For Transgenderism, Larry L. Lichtenwalter

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

In April, 2017, the members of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Executive Committee voted to accept a “Statement on Transgenderism.”1 Reactions reported from the floor as well as published responses underscore the controversial and personal nature of the subject. 2 When we talk about transgenderism we are talking about people. When a face (person) is attached to the word “transgender,” it abruptly becomes something very personal, undeniably real, and extremely complex. The intensely personal realities of human internal crisis are highlighted in the rise of transgender issues to social and medical prominence in our changing culture.3 It can be …

Ellen White, Health, And The Third Angel’S Message: Part 3– Recognizing Environmental Hazards And Minimizing Their Impact, Warren A. Shipton Jan 2018

Ellen White, Health, And The Third Angel’S Message: Part 3– Recognizing Environmental Hazards And Minimizing Their Impact, Warren A. Shipton

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

Satan’s rebellion in heaven centered around his dissatisfaction with the principles and organization of the heavenly domain (Isa 14:12–14). In his first recorded interchange on earth after his expulsion from heaven, Satan inferred there was a moral defect in God’s character in the words “You will not surely die” (Gen 3:4) in response to Eve’s repetition of God’s advice that death would follow disobedience (v. 3). Eve was deceived by his persuasive reasoning. After Adam’s choice to follow Eve in rebellion, God’s portrait (image) commenced to be erased in humanity through disbelief and disobedience. This process has continued with the …

Treatment Outcomes Of Mohs Surgery Vs. Imiquimod In Basal Cell Carcinoma, Mir Saleem, Julianna Robinson

Biology Faculty Articles

Background: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is a type of skin cancer, and a growing number of cases are diagnosed each year. There are many treatment options available, however finding the best treatment that has the lowest recurrence rate and morbidity is a challenge. The treatment options vary from topical or systemic medications to special procedures to surgical interventions. Treatment’s effectiveness largely differs on the BCC sub-type and its individual features. Method: Data was collected from the charts of patients that were diagnosed with BCC. The selected patients were treated by either Mosh surgery or Imiquimod. Results: Majority …

Outer Limits Of Biotechnologies: A Jewish Perspective, John D. Loike, Alan H. Kadish Jan 2018

Outer Limits Of Biotechnologies: A Jewish Perspective, John D. Loike, Alan H. Kadish

Office of the President Publications and Research

A great deal of biomedical research focuses on new biotechnologies such as gene editing, stem cell biology and reproductive medicine, which have created a scientific revolution. While the potential medical benefits of this research may be far-reaching, ethical issues related to non-medical applications of these technologies are demanding. We analyze, from a Jewish legal perspective, some of the ethical conundrums that society faces in pushing the outer limits in researching these new biotechnologies.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (Ssri) Efficiency, And Comparison To Alternative Antidepressant Treatments, Angela Camilli, Mir Saleem Jan 2018

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (Ssri) Efficiency, And Comparison To Alternative Antidepressant Treatments, Angela Camilli, Mir Saleem

Biology Faculty Articles

Depression is one of the most important causes of disability-adjusted life years. Currently, the majority of patients are treated with SSRIs. However, the effectiveness of SSRIs is questionable. Method: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the pharmacotherapy treatment selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in patients diagnosed with major depression. This was achieved by comparison to other methods of antidepressant treatment such as, selective serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and psychotherapy. Results: The majority of patients were taking SSRIs for treatment of depression alone or in combination with other antidepressant …

Patents, Property, And Prospectivity, Jonathan Masur, Adam Mortara Jan 2018

Patents, Property, And Prospectivity, Jonathan Masur, Adam Mortara

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

When judges change the legal rules governing patents, those changes are always retroactive. That is, they apply equally to patents that have already been granted and patents that do not yet exist. There are benefits to making a change in the law retroactive, particularly if the new legal rule is an improvement over what preceded it. But there are costs as well. Retroactive changes in the law upset reliance interests. This can be particularly harmful when those reliance interests involve rights or entitlements that form the basis for substantial financial investment, as is often the case with patents. What is …

Regulatory Bundling, Jennifer Nou, Edward H. Stiglitz Jan 2018

Regulatory Bundling, Jennifer Nou, Edward H. Stiglitz

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Regulatory bundling is the aggregation or disaggregation of legislative rules by administrative agencies. Agencies, in other words, can bundle what would otherwise be multiple rules into just one rulemaking. Conversely, they can split one rule into several. This observation parallels other recent work on how agencies can aggregate adjudications and enforcement actions but now focuses on legislative rules, the most consequential form of agency action. The topic is timely in light of a recent executive order directing agencies to repeal two regulations for every new one promulgated. Agencies now have a greater incentive to pack regulatory provisions together for every …

A Dynamic Life Cycle Economic And Environmental Assessment Of Green Infrastructures, Taler Bixler Jan 2018

A Dynamic Life Cycle Economic And Environmental Assessment Of Green Infrastructures, Taler Bixler

Master's Theses and Capstones

As stormwater and its embedded nutrients continue to impede our nation's waterways, green infrastructures (GIs) have been increasingly applied in urban and suburban communities as a sustainable alternative to the combined sewer systems. Although GIs have been widely studied for their life cycle impacts and benefits, most of these studies adopt a static approach which is not transferrable to other environments on a spatial or temporal scale. This research utilizes a dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate seven different GIs through both an economic and environmental perspective by integrating the conventional LCA with a system dynamics model simulating the …

Four Years Of Unmanned Aerial System Imagery Reveals Vegetation Change In A Sub-Arctic Mire Due To Permafrost Thaw, Jessica Delgreco Jan 2018

Four Years Of Unmanned Aerial System Imagery Reveals Vegetation Change In A Sub-Arctic Mire Due To Permafrost Thaw, Jessica Delgreco

Master's Theses and Capstones

Warming trends in sub-arctic regions have resulted in thawing of permafrost which in turn induces change in vegetation across peatlands both in areal extent and composition. Collapse of palsas (i.e. permafrost plateaus) has also been correlated with increases in methane (CH4) emission to the atmosphere. Vegetation change provides new microenvironments that promote CH4 production and emission, specifically through plant interactions and structure. By quantifying the changes in vegetation at the landscape scale, we will be able to scale the impact of thaw on CH4 emissions in these complex climate-sensitive northern ecosystems. We combine field-based measurements of vegetation composition and Unmanned …

Hunter Harvest Effect On The Breeding Bird Population Of Northern Pintail Anas Acuta In North America, Matthew Wang Jan 2018

Hunter Harvest Effect On The Breeding Bird Population Of Northern Pintail Anas Acuta In North America, Matthew Wang

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Hunter harvest and the effects that it can have on population dynamics is a relationship used by wildlife professionals when making management decisions. Hunter harvest can be compensatory or additive on wildlife populations and instances where hunter harvest has been a key role in a population decline, and sometimes demise, is an occurrence studied in wildlife management. Waterfowl numbers in North America have increased 17% since 1960, but during that same time frame the Northern Pintail population has decreased 40%. Hunter harvest data has been recorded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 1961, while they have simultaneously been …

The Sms Ostfriesland: A Warship At The Crossroads Of Military Technology, Wesley R. Hale Jan 2018

The Sms Ostfriesland: A Warship At The Crossroads Of Military Technology, Wesley R. Hale

Open Access Master's Theses

In the 21st century, the applicability of aeronautics in civilian and military life is common place. The use of planes allows loved ones to visit each other across countries and continents, reducing what was once an almost insurmountable distance to a few hours of discomfort. Military strategists accept as a matter of course that the nation that controls the skies will often control the field below. The 21st century features human control of the skies as a fact of life. The use of planes as a form of transportation is thought of little more than the use of …

Thalassiosiroid Diatom Responses To Silicon Stress And Ocean Acidification, Joselynn Wallace Jan 2018

Thalassiosiroid Diatom Responses To Silicon Stress And Ocean Acidification, Joselynn Wallace

Open Access Dissertations

Atmospheric CO2 has risen dramatically since the industrial revolution. This rise in atmospheric and oceanic pCO2 has perturbed ocean carbonate chemistry and led to ocean acidification. Diatoms are phytoplankton that account for 40% of oceanic primary production through photosynthetic carbon fixation, which is aided by their carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM). The CCM uses the bicarbonate transporters (BCTs) and carbonic anhydrases (CAs). Our current understanding of how diatoms might respond to ocean acidification is based on experiments using model diatoms or assessing the response of the bulk diatom community, rather than assessing a diversity of diatoms in a complex …

A Genomic Approach To The Complex Relationship Between An Apicomplexan Endosymbiont And Its Host, Christopher Paight Jan 2018

A Genomic Approach To The Complex Relationship Between An Apicomplexan Endosymbiont And Its Host, Christopher Paight

Open Access Dissertations

Nephromyces, a genus in the phylum Apicomplexa, has recently been described as having a mutualistic relationship with its host: tunicates in the Molgulidae family (Saffo et al. 2010). If true, Nephromyces would be the only known example of a mutualistic apicomplexan genus. In addition to the possible switch to mutualism, Nephromyces is one of a few apicomplexan groups containing bacterial endosymbionts. To test the hypothesis that endosymbiotic bacteria facilitated the transition of Nephromyces from parasitism, the metabolic capabilities of Nephromyces and its bacterial endosymbionts need to be determined. The transition from obligate parasite to endosymbiont is predicted to involve …

The Microbiome Of Four North American Nicrophorus Species (Coleoptera: Silphidae): Implications For Parental Care Behavior In Insects, Morgan Olmstead Jan 2018

The Microbiome Of Four North American Nicrophorus Species (Coleoptera: Silphidae): Implications For Parental Care Behavior In Insects, Morgan Olmstead

Master's Theses and Capstones

Nicrophorus (Coleoptera: Silphidae) are a unique genus of beetles in which both parents exhibit parental care. The female parents maintain the carcass resource for the young and directly feed growing larvae, while often the males maintain the carcass and prevent usurpation from congeners and conspecifics in search of the ephemeral resource. The beetles in this genus are known to compete with both animal carcass microbiota and soil microbiota, thus developing several mechanisms to combat these microbes. In this study, four North Americanus Nicrophorus spp. microbiomes were characterized and compared to each other in effort to determine the core Nicrophorus microbiome. …

Quantifying The Effects Of Motor Tasks On Corticokinematic Coherence In Parkinson's Disease, Debanjan Borthakur Jan 2018

Quantifying The Effects Of Motor Tasks On Corticokinematic Coherence In Parkinson's Disease, Debanjan Borthakur

Open Access Master's Theses

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder. Researchers are investigating ways to identify neural and behavioral markers for PD that can lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments. The goal of this research is to quantify the effects of motor tasks on corticokinematic coherence(CKC) in PD. We can consider this research as a proof of concept study. This research can eventually help us quantify the motor symptoms related to PD using the measurement process called CKC. Brain muscle synchrony can be quantified as corticomuscular coherence (CMC) and corticokinematic coherence (CKC). Surgical and Pharmacological treatments have not been shown to …

Mitochondrial DNA mutations accumulate with age and may play a role in stem cell aging as suggested by the premature aging phenotype of mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma (POLG) exonuclease-deficient mice. Therefore, E1A immortalized murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) from POLG exonuclease-deficient and wild-type (WT) mice were constructed. Surprisingly, when some E1A immortalized MEF lines were cultured in pyruvate-containing media they slowly became addicted to the pyruvate. The POLG exonuclease-deficient MEFs were more sensitive to several mitochondrial inhibitors and showed increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production under standard conditions. When cultured in pyruvate-containing media, POLG exonuclease-deficient MEFs showed decreased oxygen consumption compared …
