On The Efficacy Of High-Dose Ascorbic Acid As Anticancer Treatment: A Literature Survey, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, ascorbate) has a controversial history in cancer treatment. Emerging evidence indicates that ascorbate in cancer treatment deserves re-examination. As research results concerning ascorbate pharmacokinetics and its mechanisms of action against tumor cells have been published, and as evidence from case studies has continued to mount that ascorbate therapy could be effective if the right protocols were used, interest among physicians and scientists has increased.
African American And First-Generation Students’ Perceptions Of And Experiences With An Academic Cohort, Sovent Zantrell Taylor
African American And First-Generation Students’ Perceptions Of And Experiences With An Academic Cohort, Sovent Zantrell Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Underrepresented student populations are faced with numerous barriers and are often overlooked on many college campuses. The aim of this research was to better understand academic cohorts and if they help reduce some of the barriers faced by African American and first-generation students which can ultimately affect retention and persistence to graduation. In order to gather this information, interviews and surveys were conducted with students once enrolled in the foundations for academic success track (Fastrack) program at the University of Mississippi. Results from the interviews and surveys indicate that while the Fastrack program seemed to support successful social transitions for …

Turkish Journal of Botany
The present study is focused on several species from the genus Astragalus L. with the aim to clarify the taxonomic status of Ukrainian local endemic species Astragalus borysthenicus Klokov, which is sometimes considered a synonym to A. onobrychis L. In this study, the morphological features, current taxonomy, taxonomical history, and phylogenetic analysis based on rDNA Bayesian inference, as well as comparative analysis of ITS1 and ITS2 secondary structures, were investigated. It was found that A. borysthenicus is distant from A. onobrychis according to phylogenetic analysis. Moreover, A. borysthenicus has differences from the investigated taxa in its secondary structures of ITS1 …
A Recurrent Neural Network Architecture For Biomedical Event Trigger Classification, Jeevith Bopaiah
A Recurrent Neural Network Architecture For Biomedical Event Trigger Classification, Jeevith Bopaiah
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
A “biomedical event” is a broad term used to describe the roles and interactions between entities (such as proteins, genes and cells) in a biological system. The task of biomedical event extraction aims at identifying and extracting these events from unstructured texts. An important component in the early stage of the task is biomedical trigger classification which involves identifying and classifying words/phrases that indicate an event. In this thesis, we present our work on biomedical trigger classification developed using the multi-level event extraction dataset. We restrict the scope of our classification to 19 biomedical event types grouped under four broad …
Analysis Of A Vector-Borne Diseases Model With A Two-Lag Delay Differential Equation, Y. Qaddura, Nsoki Mavinga
Analysis Of A Vector-Borne Diseases Model With A Two-Lag Delay Differential Equation, Y. Qaddura, Nsoki Mavinga
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
We are concerned with the stability analysis of equilibrium solutions for a two-lag delay differential equation which models the spread of vector-borne diseases, where the lags are incubation periods in humans and vectors. We show that there are some values of transmission and recovery rates for which the disease dies out and others for which the disease spreads into an endemic. The proofs of the main stability results are based on the linearization method and the analysis of roots of transcendental equations. We then simulate numerical solutions using MATLAB. We observe that the solution could possess chaotic and sometimes unbounded …

A dynamic balance between strong excitatory and inhibitory neuronal inputs is hypothesized to play a pivotal role in information processing in the brain. While there is evidence of the existence of a balanced operating regime in several cortical areas and idealized neuronal network models, it is important for the theory of balanced networks to be reconciled with more physiological neuronal modeling assumptions. In this work, we examine the impact of spike-frequency adaptation, observed widely across neurons in the brain, on balanced dynamics. We incorporate adaptation into binary and integrate-and-fire neuronal network models, analyzing the theoretical effect of adaptation in the …

Biodiversity And Evolution In The Guiana Shield, South America, Andrew Michael Snyder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The neotropics are characterized as the most species rich region in the world. Unfortunately, the region's unparalleled biodiversity has not protected it from ongoing threats such as agriculture, mining, logging, oil extraction, and climate change. I studied the biodiversity and evolution of the herpetofauna of South America in order to investigate the influence of historical geological and climatological events in shaping extant neotropical diversity, particularly the Guiana shield. For my research, I set out to explore the processes involved in shaping the remarkable extant diversity using anuran amphibians as models. With my dissertation, I provide a comprehensive review of the …

The Experience Of A Brazilian Graduate Student In The United States In Disciplinary Writing: The Cognitive, Social, And Rhetorical Influences On A Thesis Introduction, Gilberto Pereira
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Eighty percent of the international students in the US are pursuing their post-graduate degrees (Institute of International Education, 2017) and studies show that the introduction of the thesis or dissertation is the most challenging section for this population to compose. However, most of these studies are based on textual analysis and overlooks the social factor and cognitive processes underlying the composition of this intricate section. Another gap in the literature is the lack of attention to how Latin-Americans develop their writing in master’s programs, especially to Brazilian students, the ninth largest international student population in the US. Therefore, this study …

Osteohistology And Skeletochronology Of An Ontogenetic Series Of Clidastes (Squamata: Mosasauridae): Growth And Metabolism In Basal Mosasaurids, Cyrus C. Green
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Clidastes was a large marine reptile from the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway of North America. Though the remains of Clidastes have been found in the Cretaceous chalks and shales for over 150 years, little is known about their growth rates.
Osteohistology is a well-documented technique used to investigate growth in extinct animals. Previous histological studies of Clidastes have hypothesized higher growth rates in basal mosasaurids than varanids due to higher vascularity. These studies focused on adult specimens but did not look at ontogenetic changes in growth rates. Isotopic studies of Clidastes indicate high metabolic temperatures, leading to speculation these …

Medicalizing Blackness: Making Racial Difference In The Atlantic World, 1780-1840, Alexandra Cornelius
Civil War Book Review
Using compelling evidence collected from archives in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, South Carolina, and Philadelphia, Rana Hogarth argues persuasively that physicians working among enslaved societies in the Atlantic world during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries played a decisive role in the racialization of physiological and physical differences among humans.

Copyright © University of Washington. Published by Cambridge University Press, 2017. Transient storage and erosion of valley fills, or sediment buffering, is a fundamental but poorly quantified process that may significantly bias fluvial sediment budgets and marine archives used for paleoclimatic and tectonic reconstructions. Prolific sediment buffering is now recognized to occur within the mountainous upper Indus River headwaters and is quantified here for the first time using optically stimulated luminescence dating, petrography, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, and morphometric analysis to define the timing, provenance, and volumes of prominent valley fills. This study finds that climatically modulated sediment buffering occurs …

Why Is The Ocean Surface Slightly Warmer Than The Atmosphere?, Lakshika Girihagama, Doron Nof
Why Is The Ocean Surface Slightly Warmer Than The Atmosphere?, Lakshika Girihagama, Doron Nof
Journal of Marine Research
How much warmer is the ocean surface than the atmosphere directly above it? The present study offers a means to quantify this temperature difference using a conceptual nonlinear one-dimensional global energy balance coupled ocean–atmosphere model ("Aqua Planet"). The significance of our idealized model, which is of intermediate complexity, is its ability to obtain an analytical solution for the global average temperatures. Our analytical model results show that, for the present climate, predicted global mean ocean temperature is 291.1 K whereas surface atmospheric temperature above the ocean surface is 287.4 K. Thus, the modeled surface ocean is 3.7 K …
High-Frequency Variability In The North Icelandic Jet, B. E. Harden, R. S. Pickart
High-Frequency Variability In The North Icelandic Jet, B. E. Harden, R. S. Pickart
Journal of Marine Research
We describe the high-frequency variability in the North Icelandic Jet (NIJ) on the Iceland Slope using data from the densely instrumented Kögur mooring array deployed upstream of the Denmark Strait sill from September 2011 to July 2012. Significant sub-8-day variability is ubiquitous in all moorings from the Iceland slope with a dominant period of 3.6 days. We attribute this variability to topographic Rossby waves on the Iceland slope with a wavelength of 62 ± 3 km and a phase velocity of 17.3 ± 0.8 km/day–1 directed downslope (–9° relative to true-north). We test the theoretical dispersion relation for these …
The Grid And The Grouse: Cooperative Federal-State Conservation Planning In The Ages Of Obama And Trump, Bret C. Birdsong
The Grid And The Grouse: Cooperative Federal-State Conservation Planning In The Ages Of Obama And Trump, Bret C. Birdsong
Scholarly Works
This essay reviews two habitat conservation and planning initiatives undertaken by the Obama administration that relied on and envisioned extraordinary cooperation between the federal and state governments in order to overcome, or at least lessen, the disruptive impacts of jurisdictional lines on effective and comprehensive habitat conservation. These initiatives are the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP) in California and the sage grouse conservation planning effort across eleven western states. Both initiatives embraced the common sense goal of coordinating development and conservation management across jurisdictional boundaries. In both initiatives, however, cooperation was motivated and sustained by specific legal and policy …

How a domestic violence survivor responds to the abuse she is experiencing depends on many factors. Some critical considerations include her access to resources, desire to stay in her relationship, and assessment of her own safety. Criminal and civil court systems place enormous pressure on survivors to separate from their abusive partners. Not only are survivors with children pressured to leave, they are punished when they stay. That punishment can come in any combination of diminished custody rights, limited parental rights, and incarceration. Yet a survivor who flees with her children is not immune to these same consequences: if she …

Our National Psychosis: Guns, Terror, And Hegemonic Masculinity, Stewart Chang
Scholarly Works
In this Article, Professor Stewart Chang, through the examination of three recent mass shooting, proposes that mass shootings driven by hegemonic masculinity should be classified and addressed as acts of terrorism. Professor Chang defines hegemonic masculinity as patterns or practices that promote the dominant social position of men and the subordinate social position of women and other gender identities. In this Article, he examines how hegemonic masculinity is allowed to become mainstream and flourish unchecked based on our characterization, classification and reaction to mass shootings and their perpetrators.
Self-Efficacy And Dependence In Personal & Clinical Relationships: A Qualitative Analysis Of Narratives About Life With Chronic Back Pain, Elizabeth Cummings
Self-Efficacy And Dependence In Personal & Clinical Relationships: A Qualitative Analysis Of Narratives About Life With Chronic Back Pain, Elizabeth Cummings
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Objectives: People with chronic back pain encounter considerable psychological and social challenges. Through personal narratives, this project examines the ever-evolving relationship between chronic back pain, sense of self-efficacy, and perceived role in interpersonal relationships, both in the community and within the health care system.
Methods: In-person semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 adult patients attending a specialized interventional spine pain clinic. The interview transcripts were subjected to inductive thematic analysis, and themes were labeled descriptively. Participant responses were intentionally not analyzed within the context of an existing theoretical framework, so that the content of participant responses would directly drive the …
Smoking Cessation And Outcome After Ischemic Stroke Or Tia, Katherine Abigail Epstein
Smoking Cessation And Outcome After Ischemic Stroke Or Tia, Katherine Abigail Epstein
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
People who smoke cigarettes are 2-4 times more likely to have a stroke and 2-5 times more likely to have a myocardial infarction compared with people who do not smoke. On a population level, it is estimated that smoking accounts for 33% of all cardiovascular deaths. Fortunately, quitting smoking can rapidly normalize risk. After an MI, smoking cessation reduces the risk of recurrent coronary events to the level of a never-smoker's after 3 years. While the benefits of smoking cessation in patients with cardiovascular disease are well-known, the benefits of smoking cessation after stroke have never been adequately examined and …

Gender Justice: The Role Of Stories And Images, Linda L. Berger, Kathryn M. Stanchi
Scholarly Works
In this book chapter, Professor Berger argues for thoughtful metaphor-making and storytelling in legal writing. Exploring legal rhetoric with an eye for gender justice, she argues metaphor and narrative shape perspective and ask the reader to join the writer in the imaginative work of seeing one thing as another. The same shift in perspective that leads to re-conception—a shift that takes advantage of metaphor and narrative’s ability to say what only they can say—is what writers aim to achieve when they use metaphor and narrative for feminist and social justice advocacy.

Herbicide resistance is ‘wicked’ in nature; therefore, results of the many educational efforts to encourage diversification of weed control practices in the United States have been mixed. It is clear that we do not sufficiently understand the totality of the grassroots obstacles, concerns, challenges, and specific solutions needed for varied crop production systems. Weed management issues and solutions vary with such variables as management styles, regions, cropping systems, and available or affordable technologies. Therefore, to help the weed science community better understand the needs and ideas of those directly dealing with herbicide resistance, seven half-day regional listening sessions were held …
