Circularly Polarized Implantable Antenna Characterization For Retinal Prosthesis Systems, Ademola Oluwaseun Kaka, Mehmet Toycan, Stuart Douglas Walker
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We describe a miniaturized antenna design for retinal prosthesis applications that enhances data transfer between the implant and external camera. The circularly polarized and conformal 2.4--2.48 GHz microstrip patch antenna was simulated inside the vitreous humor and is intended for biomedical applications. Modified Hilbert and serpentine geometries were used for the proposed implant antenna design. Capacitive radiator loading offered miniaturized dimensions of 5.8 $\times $ 6.5 $\times $ 2 mm$^{3}$ (width $\times $ height $\times $ thickness mm$^{3})$. A truncated design enhanced the intrinsic circular polarization characteristics to $>$3 dB axial ratio. Polydimethylsiloxane substrate and superstrate materials were used …

How small can an electronic device be and still function? How many atoms are needed for such device? At what point will the semiconductor fabrication technology be unable to construct anything smaller? These are common questions asked by researchers, and the answers indicate the short-term limitations on the use of semiconductor technology. When we reach these limitations, we can propose two methods to solve these problems: first, we could continue using semiconductor technology, alongside the development of new theories and techniques to counter quantum effects caused by the miniaturization of electronic devices like transistors and microprocessors. Second, we could exploit …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Arrhythmia, also known as dysrhythmia, is a condition involving an irregular heartbeat. A problem in the heart may cause problems in other organs, and as time passes, this will lead to more severe problems. Arrhythmia must be detected at an early stage to prevent such a problem occurring in the heart. Detection of arrhythmia from an electrocardiogram is an easy method that does not need much equipment and does not harm the patient. The purpose of this research is to find a faster and more accurate system to classify nine classes of arrhythmia. The St. Petersburg Institute of Cardiological Technics …

An Exploratory Study Of Heritage Spanish Rhotics: Addressing Methodological Challenges Of Heritage Language Phonetics Research, Elizabeth M. Kissling
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
When speaking their heritage language, heritage speakers typically sound much like other “native speakers.” However, recent studies have found that heritage speakers (HSs) are highly variable and produce a range of more and less “native-like” phonetic features. In an effort to stimulate productive new research in this area, this article addresses some of the methodological challenges of heritage language phonetics research, namely dealing with high variability and identifying the best predictors of that variability. A study on heritage Spanish rhotics is presented to elucidate those methodological challenges. The study took an exploratory, bottom-up approach to analyzing the rhotics produced by …

De Crepusculares Y Garotas Modernas: Las Columnas Travestidas De Alfonsina Storni Y Clarice Lispector, Mariela Méndez
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

An Efficient Recurrent Fuzzy Cmac Model Based On A Dynamic-Group--Based Hybrid Evolutionary Algorithm For Identification And Prediction Applications, Chin-Ling Lee, Chengjian Lin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This article presents an efficient TSK-type recurrent fuzzy cerebellar model articulation controller (T-RFCMAC) model based on a dynamic-group--based hybrid evolutionary algorithm (DGHEA) for solving identification and prediction problems. The proposed T-RFCMAC model is based on the traditional CMAC model and the Takagi--Sugeno--Kang (TSK) parametric fuzzy inference system. Otherwise, the recurrent network, which imports feedback links with a receptive field cell, is embedded in the T-RFCMAC model, and the feedback units are used as memory elements. The DGHEA, which is a hybrid of the dynamic-group quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) and the Nelder--Mead method, is proposed for adjusting the parameters of …

A Noninvasive Time-Frequency-Based Approach To Estimate Cuffless Arterial Blood Pressure, Ömer Faruk Ertuğrul, Necmetti̇n Sezgi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Arterial blood pressure (ABP) is one of the most vital signs in the prophylaxis and treatment of blood pressure-related diseases because raised blood pressure is the most significant cause of death and the second major cause of disability in the world. Higher ABP yields greater strain on arteries and these extra strains turn arteries into thicker, less flexible, and more narrow structures. This increases the possibility of having an artery busting or artery occlusion, which are the primary reasons for heart attacks, kidney disease, or strokes. In addition to its importance in monitoring cardiovascular homeostasis, measurement of ABP is imperative …

Pattern Diversity Antenna For On-Body And Off-Body Wban Links, Sema Dumanli
Pattern Diversity Antenna For On-Body And Off-Body Wban Links, Sema Dumanli
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Maintaining the quality and the reliability of a wireless body area network (WBAN) has a variety of challenges, one of which is the design of the on-body antenna. The on-body antenna often forms both on-body and off-body links and needs to have an application-specific pattern to secure the connection. The antenna should direct its energy in parallel to the human skin while establishing an on-body link, ideally omnidirectionally, while an on-body link would benefit from a directional radiation pattern perpendicular to human skin. Moreover, the lossy body tissue is within the reactive region of the antenna affecting the antenna performance; …

Comparative Analysis Of Mabc With Knn, Som, And Aco Algorithms For Ecg Heartbeat Classification, Seli̇m Di̇lmaç, Zümray Ölmez, Tamer Ölmez
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we proposed a classification method based on a nature-inspired algorithm, i.e., modified artificial bee colony (MABC). This method was applied to electrocardiogram (ECG) heartbeat classification. ECG data was obtained from MITBIH database. Eight different types of heartbeats (N, j, V, F, f, A, a, and R) were analyzed. For a better classification result, both time domain and frequency domain features were used. Feature selection was done by divergence analysis. MABC classification accuracy and heartbeat sensitivity values were compared with the results of other methods. Among other classifiers, k-nearest neighbor (KNN), Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM), and ant colony …
Attenuating Saturated-Regulator Operation Effect Of Brushless Dc Motors Through Genetic-Based Fuzzy Logic Estimator, Emre Çeli̇k, Ni̇hat Öztürk
Attenuating Saturated-Regulator Operation Effect Of Brushless Dc Motors Through Genetic-Based Fuzzy Logic Estimator, Emre Çeli̇k, Ni̇hat Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
As brushless DC motor (BLDCM) speed approaches base speed, current regulators gradually saturate and lose their ability to perform their regulating task, which causes a dramatic fall in the phase currents and motor power. To control the current to a greater extent and avoid power decline, a new reference current generation technique based on a simple fuzzy logic estimator (FLE) is introduced in this paper. According to motor speed and current command, the developed FLE decides the proper commutation angle $\alpha $, which is the angle relative to normal commutation instant used for setting the current slew rate during commutation. …

The sizes of silicon nanoparticles produced using two different novel methods are investigated in this report. The method of production used to generate silicon oxide nanoparticles was achieved via gas aggregation codeposition with water on a cold target, and also via a liquid jet method. The nanoparticles were drop-cast on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate and assessed using ultrahigh vacuum atomic force microscopy (AFM). Noncontact constant force mode was used in the AFM investigations. The silicon nanoparticles produced using the gas aggregation and water codeposition method were found to be smaller than 2 nm. A degree of deviation …

Prediction of a heart attack is very important since it is one of the leading causes of sudden death, especially in low-income countries. Although cardiologists use traditional clinical methods such as electrocardiography and blood tests for heart attack prediction, computer aided diagnosis systems that use machine learning methods are also in use for this task. In this study, we used machine learning and feature selection algorithms together. Our aim is to determine the best machine learning method and the best feature selection algorithm to predict heart attacks. For this purpose, many machine learning methods with optimum parameters and several feature …
Estimating Left Ventricular Volume With Roi-Based Convolutional Neural Network, Feng Zhu
Estimating Left Ventricular Volume With Roi-Based Convolutional Neural Network, Feng Zhu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The volume of the human left ventricular (LV) chamber is an important indicator for diagnosing heart disease. Although LV volume can be measured manually with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the process is difficult and time-consuming for experienced cardiologists. This paper presents an end-to-end segmentation-free method that estimates LV volume from MRI images directly. The method initially uses Fourier transform and a regression filter to calculate the region of interest that contains the LV chambers. Then convolutional neural networks are trained to estimate the end-diastolic volume (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV). The resulting models accurately estimate the EDV and ESV …

A Strategy For Improving Netclust Server Placement For Multicloud Environments, Yuting Zhao, Jinhong Liu, Qing Fang, Lifang Xu, Changlai Du, Yuan Xiaoqun
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we propose a fast server placement algorithm to improve the NetClust framework and make it more efficient and exible. To this end, we introduce hierarchical clustering technologies to the NetClust framework and propose a exible server placement algorithm, which integrates the agglomerative and divisive clustering technologies to reduce the time complexity and avoid the performance uctuation affected by the initial node selection. The experiment results show that our server placement algorithm may reduce the time complexity of server selection of NetClust significantly and improve the exibility and applicability of the NetClust.

Antioxidant Potential And Secondary Reactivity Of Bis$\{$Diphenyl(2-Pyridyl)Phosphino$\}$Copper(Ii) Complex, Ezzat Khan, Adnan Shahzad, Muhammad Nawaz Tahir, Awal Noor
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Copper-based complexes with the general formulas [Cu(L)$_{2}$]Cl$_{2}$ (1) and [Cu$_{2}$L$_{2}$($\mu_{2}$-L)$\mu_{2-}$Cl$_{2}$] (2) and a mixed-ligand anionic complex [Cu(L)$_{2}$dedtc][LCl] (3b), where L= diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphine and dedtc = diethyldithiocarbamate, were synthesized and structurally characterized. X-ray analysis revealed that the coordination environment around the copper atom in complexes 1-3 is distorted tetrahedral. In monomeric complexes 1 and 3b both diphenyl(2-pyridyl) phosphine ligands are monodentate and are coordinated through the P-atom. In complex 3b two phosphine ligands are attached to copper through the P-atom. The third phosphine ligand acts as a bridged ligand, coordinated to the metal centers through the P-atom and N-atom. Complexes 1 and …

Poly L-Dopa/Poly(Ethylenedioxythiophene) As A Novel Mussel-Inspired Electroactive Binder For Environmentally Friendly Hybrid Supercapacitors, Elham Heydaripour, Mohammad Reza Nateghi, Mohammad Hossein Mosslemin
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
3,4-Dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine and ethylenedioxythiophene were chemically copolymerized via an oxidative process in aqueous solution. The copolymer was used as a novel mussel-inspired electroactive binder in conjunction with a nickel-based metal organic frame work for fabrication of environmentally friendly supercapacitors. The binder, in addition to the sticking effect, contributes to electric charge storing via the redox process of catechol moieties of poly(3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine) and also the formation of a high charge-storing double layer due to the presence of poly(ethylenedioxythiophene). Cyclic voltammetry, charge/discharge measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectrometry showed that the hybrid supercapacitors based on Ni-benzidine MOF with the new electroactive binder exhibit very …

A New Cocrystal Explosive Trinitrotoluene (Tnt):1-Amino-4-Bromonaphthalene With Reduced Sensitivity, Ni̇lgün Şen
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A 1:1 cocrystal of TNT and 1-amino-4-bromonaphthalene was prepared via solvent evaporation. The structure of the cocrystal was determined via single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Crystal structure determination studies indicated that the main mechanism of cocrystallization originates from the intermolecular hydrogen bonding (amino-nitro), halogen bonding, and $\pi -\pi $ stacking. Investigation of intermolecular interactions by Hirshfeld surface and fingerprint plot analysis revealed that the structures were stabilized by H...H, O...H, C...C ($\pi -\pi )$ and Br...O interactions. Hirshfeld surfaces showed that these weak interactions were significant for crystal packing. We analyzed the crystal packing and showed how this may influence …

The aim of this study is to investigate the in vivo molecular mechanism underlying the antitumor properties of Nigella sativa ethanolic extract (NSEE) through its antiangiogenic effect against diethyl nitrosamine (DENA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. Materials and methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: normal, NSEE, DENA, and NSEE-DENA groups. Final body weight, hepatosomatic indices, serum AFP, serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels, and liver tissue hepatocyte growth factor ß (HGFß) protein expression were estimated. Liver sections were stained for histological …
