Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Coumarinyl 1,3,4-oxadiazoles were synthesized from Schiff bases and acetic anhydride. All compounds were characterized by melting points and their structures confirmed by mass and $^{1}$H and $^{13}$C NMR spectrometry. These novel coumarinyl derivatives were subjected to antibacterial, antifungal, anta atoxigenic, and antioxidant activity. Their activity varied depending on their structure, where 2-(3-acetyl-5-(((4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromen-7-yl)oxy)methyl)- 2,3-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)-1,4-phenylene diacetate showed significant antioxidant and antibacterial activity on B. subtilis. 4-(3-Acetyl-5-(((4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromen-7-yl)oxy)methyl)-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)-1,2-phenylene diacetate was found to possess excellent antifungal and antia atoxigenic activity.

Development Of A Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Electrochemical Sensor For Tyrosinase, Aysu Yarman
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
For the first time a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based sensor for tyrosinase is described. This sensor is based on the electropolymerization of scopoletin or o-phenylenediamine in the presence of tyrosinase from mushrooms, which has a high homology to the human enzyme. The template was removed either by treatment with proteinase K or by alkaline treatment. The measuring signal was generated either by measuring the formation of a product by the target enzyme or by evaluation of the permeability of the redox marker ferricyanide. The o-phenylenediamine-based MIP sensor has a linear measuring range up to 50 nM of tyrosinase with a …

The imperative demand for antibacterial agents and enzyme inhibitors prompted us to synthesize some new compounds, 6a-6k, bearing multifunctional moieties. The target acetamides were derived from 4-phenyl-5-(1-tosylpiperidin-4-yl)-4$H$-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (3). The structural analysis was carried out using modern spectroscopic techniques including IR, NMR, and EIMS spectral analysis. The antibacterial activity was screened against five bacterial strains including three gram-negative and two gram-positive ones. Enzyme inhibition was carried out against lipoxygenase enzyme and results were supported by in silico study. The synthesized compounds were proved to be potent antibacterial agents and enzyme inhibitors.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The significant development in the construction of microscale cell culture platforms and the interest in bioanalytical analysis have recently resulted in the emergence of a new concept of `organ-on-a-chip' systems. Organ-on-a-chip is a new three-dimensional (3D) in vitro microfabricated unit that contains a multichannel microfluidic cell culture. Even if many informative and useful data are obtained from animal models and in vitro assays, they are still limited for extrapolation to human systems during drug design and development. Only about 1 out of 10,000 compounds is processed in clinical trials for final approval. As being the first example of its kind, …

The therapeutic applications of 1,2,4-triazoles motivated us to synthesize some new derivatives. Two series of $S$-substituted derivatives (8a-8j, 12a-12i) of 5-$\{$1-[(4-chlorophenyl)sulfonyl]-3-piperidinyl$\}$-4-phenyl-4$H$-1,2,4-triazol-3-thiol (6) have been synthesized and evaluated for their biological potential. Using 4-chlorobenzene sulfonyl chloride (1) and ethyl piperidine-3-carboxylate (2), ethyl 1-[(4-chlorophenyl)sulfonyl]piperidine-3-carboxylate (3) was synthesized and converted into 3,4,5-trisubstituted 1,2,4-triazole (6) through formation of the corresponding carbohydrazide (4) and hydrazinecarbothioamide (5). Compound 6 was transformed into 8a-8j by alkyl halides (7a-7j) and into 12a-12i by $N$-aralkyl/aryl-2-bromoacetamides (11a-11i) in an aprotic solvent. The electrophiles, 11a-11i, were synthesized by gearing up $N$-substituted aralkyl/aryl amines (10a-10i) with 2-bromoacetyl bromide (9) under dynamic pH …

Synthesis Of Some Ketones Via Nano-Nickel Oxide Catalyzed Acylation Of Arylzinc Reagents; Strategy Involving The Use Of Mixed (Methyl)(Aryl)Zincs, Özgen Ömür Pekel, Ender Erdi̇k, Meli̇ke Kalkan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Nano-NiO catalyzed acylation of mixed (methyl)(aryl)zincs with aromatic acyl halides in THF at room temperature provides a new facile route for aryl-aroyl coupling. Among NiCl$_{2}$.L$_{2}$ and NiCl$_{2}$.L (L = monodentate and bidentate phosphine ligand) catalysts, the lower catalyst loading of NiCl$_{2}$ (dppf) may seem attractive; however, nano-NiO, being the lowest cost catalyst, is more favorable for aroylation of (methyl)(aryl)zincs. This procedure also provides a supplement to Cu and Pd catalyzed acylation of diorganozincs.

Pyridine-3/4-thiocarboxamide derivatives were used as starting materials for the synthesis of the target compounds. The pyridine-3/4-thiocarboxamide derivatives were reacted with ethyl 2-chloroacetoacetate in ethanol to give the thiazole derivatives (1, 2). The two ethyl thiazole-carboxylate derivatives (1, 2) thus obtained were treated with sodium hydroxide solution and ethanol and converted to carboxylic acids (3, 4). The carboxylic acid derivatives (3, 4) were reacted with thiosemicarbazide in phosphoroxy trichloride and aminothiadiazole rings (5, 6) were formed. Thus, two thiazolyl-thiadiazole amine derivatives (5, 6) were obtained. These two derivatives (5, 6) were converted into two chloroacetamidothiadiazole derivatives (7, 8) by reaction with …

Use Of Calcined Layered Double Hydroxide [Zn$_{2}$-Al-Co$_{3}$] For Removal Of Textile Dye Acid Green 1 From Wastewater: Kinetic, Equilibrium, Comparative, And Recycling Studies, El Hassane Mourid, Mohamed Lakraimi, Souad El Abridi, Lhaj Benaziz, El Hassan Elkhattabi, Moha Berraho
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the present study, calcined layered double hydroxides (CLDHs) were obtained by heating [Zn$_{2}$-Al-CO$_{3}$] at 500 $^{\circ}$C. The adsorption of the textile dye acid green 1 (AG1) by CLDH was carried out at different pH levels, adsorbent--adsorbate contact times, and AG1/CLDH mass ratios. Equilibrium at room temperature was reached after 24 h, which was confirmed by the kinetic modeling of the experimental data by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption is described by a Langmuir-type isotherm. The comparative study of adsorption isotherms in calcined and uncalcined phases reveals that the former could be a good candidate for trapping such pollutants. After …
Teaching Chemistry In A Spiral Progression Approach: Lessons From Science Teachers In The Philippines, Joymie R. Orbe, Allen A. Espinosa, Janir T. Datukan
Teaching Chemistry In A Spiral Progression Approach: Lessons From Science Teachers In The Philippines, Joymie R. Orbe, Allen A. Espinosa, Janir T. Datukan
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
As the Philippines moves towards implementing the K-12 curriculum, there has been a mismatch in teacher preparation in science. The present teacher education curriculum prepares science teachers to specialise in a specific field (e.g. integrated science, biology, chemistry, and physics). However, in the K-12 curriculum, they are required to teach all the sciences in a spiral progression approach. Hence, this study analysed the experiences of science teachers in teaching chemistry in the K-12 curriculum in order to identify their challenges and how they are overcoming them. Findings suggest that the teacher’s content, pedagogy, and assessment in chemistry are problematic; specifically, …
Poems Found Among The Resolution Scrapbooks: A Teacher Narrative Inquiry, Cynthia M. Morawski
Poems Found Among The Resolution Scrapbooks: A Teacher Narrative Inquiry, Cynthia M. Morawski
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Six pre-service teachers participated in a component of narrative inquiry that took place the week before their teacher education program began. The component offered the teachers a variety of multimodal activities, such as body biographies, teaching museums, and paper tearing representations, all making use of repurposed materials, to critically consider their recurring narratives in relation to their recurring pedagogical beliefs and practices. Handmade journals and resolution scrapbooks acted as places to reflect and record their responses (Author). For this paper, I turned to narrative inquiry supported by found poetry and focus on the part of the component that contains the …
‘Aboriginal Learning Style’ And Culturally Responsive Schooling: Entangled, Entangling, And The Possibilities Of Getting Disentangled, Greg Vass
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Arising from the author’s experiences as a high school teacher, and now teacher educator and education researcher, this article is motivated by concerns to do with ‘good’ schooling practices in connection with Indigenous education in Australia. More specifically, the paper critically considers the enduring and worrying influences of ‘Aboriginal learning style theory’, alongside considering the possibilities of culturally responsive approaches. While interest in culturally responsive schooling is growing, the argument put forward here is that concomitant with these efforts, more attention needs to be invested into teasing out how and why this approach differs from learning styles in significant ways, …

Load frequency control (LFC) is an essential aspect of power system dynamics. This paper focuses on the optimization of LFC for a two-area deregulated power system under different scenarios. A recent nature-inspired ower pollination algorithm (FPA), based on the pollination process of plants, is used to tune the proportional integral (PI) controller parameters of LFC for the global minima solution. FPA is compared with a genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and a conventional PI controller. During large load disturbance in the areas, controllers are incapable of reducing frequency deviations and tie-line power oscillations due to the slow response of the …
An Elitist Approach For Solving The Traveling Salesman Problem Using An Animalmigration Optimization Algorithm, Ezgi̇ Ülker
An Elitist Approach For Solving The Traveling Salesman Problem Using An Animalmigration Optimization Algorithm, Ezgi̇ Ülker
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents an improved version of the animal migration optimization (AMO) algorithm for solving the traveling salesman problem (TSP), which is classified as a combinatorial NP-hard problem. AMO is one of the recent metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the migration behavior of animals and has been efficiently applied to a variety of optimization problems. The algorithm is improved by reconstructing the neighborhood topology of each animal during the migration. This modified algorithm is called the elitist animal migration optimization (ELAMO) algorithm, since elitism is introduced as a way in which the positions of the leaders are considered for the neighborhood …

A Novel Solution In The Simultaneous Deep Optimization Of Rgb-D Camera Calibration Parameters Using Metaheuristic Algorithms, Amir Safaei, Saeid Fazli
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This article presents a novel method for estimating 19 parameters of RGB and depth camera calibration simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is based on applying metaheuristic methods for deep optimization and estimating all parameters of intrinsic, extrinsic, and lens distortions of cameras. This paper compares four metaheuristic algorithms, i.e. a genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, the colonial competitive algorithm, and the shuffled frog leaping algorithm, with a numerical algorithm called singular value decomposition. The proposed method does not need the initial estimation for optimization and it can avoid being trapped in local minima. By using nondirect estimation, we achieve middle computing …

Baseline wander (BW) is a common low frequency artifact in electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The prime cause from which BW arises is the patient's breathing and movement. To facilitate reliable visual interpretation of the ECG and to discern particular patterns in the ECG signal, BW needs to be removed. In this paper, a novel BW removal method is presented. The hypothesis is based on the observation that ECG signal variation covaries with its BW. As such, the P, Q, R, S, and T peaks will follow the baseline drift. On this basis, the following proposition is true: a reliable approximation of …

Aim
To evaluate Save‐A‐Tooth (SAT), EMT Toothsaver (EMT) and Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) for their influence on the viability and proliferative capacity of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPDLFs).
Methodology
Primary HPDLFs were seeded into 96‐well cell culture plates and exposed to SAT, EMT, HBSS and water (negative control) for 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h at room temperature (22 °C). After each exposure time, cell viability was measured through quantifying adenosine triphosphate (ATP) using a luminescent dye. The proliferative capacity was also quantified using the PrestoBlue assay after 12 or 24 h storage in each medium. The …
