In the United States, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, accompanied by substantial economic and emotional costs. During 2015, more than 15 million family members who provided care to AD patients had an estimated total cost of 221 billion dollars. Recent studies have shown that elevated total plasma levels of homocysteine (tHcy), a condition known as hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), is a risk factor for AD. HHcy is associated with cognitive decline, brain atrophy, and dementia; enhances the vulnerability of neurons to oxidative injury; and damages the blood–brain barrier. Many therapeutic supplements containing vitamin B12 and folate have …

Cancer driver prioritization for functional analysis of potential actionable therapeutic targets is a significant challenge. Meta-analyses of mutated genes across different human cancer types for driver prioritization has reaffirmed the role of major players in cancer, including KRAS, TP53 and EGFR, but has had limited success in prioritizing genes with non-recurrent mutations in specific cancer types. Sleeping Beauty (SB) insertional mutagenesis is a powerful experimental gene discovery framework to define driver genes in mouse models of human cancers. Meta-analyses of SB datasets across multiple tumor types is a potentially informative approach to prioritize drivers, and complements efforts …

Despite increasing evidence suggesting a role for NADPH oxidases (Nox) in bone pathophysiology, whether Nox enzymes contribute to obesity-mediated bone remodeling remains to be clearly elucidated. Nox2 is one of the predominant Nox enzymes expressed in the bone marrow microenvironment and is a major source of ROS generation during inflammatory processes. It is also well recognized that a high-fat diet (HFD) induces obesity, which negatively impacts bone remodeling. In this work, we investigated the effect of Nox2 loss of function on obesity-mediated alteration of bone remodeling using wild-type (WT) and Nox2-knockout (KO) mice fed with a standard lab chow diet …

Background: While Clostridium difficile gastrointestinal infection (CDI) is the most common hospital-acquired infectious disease, C. difficile bacteremia (CDB) is exceedingly rare and its risk factors, mortality rate, and modalities of treatment are not well defined. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, IRB approved, chart review of adult patients with a diagnosis of CDB admitted to our institutions from 2011 through 2017. Variables catalogued included previous antibiotic and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use, co-morbid conditions, prior history of CDI, diarrhea at the time of CDB, active malignancy, and gastrointestinal (GI) disruption (e.g., perforated viscous, GI bleeding, abdominal malignancy). Treatment courses and outcomes …

Nonhepatosplenic/noncutaneous γδ peripheral T-cell lymphoma (NHNCγδ PTCL) represents a miscellaneous group of unrelated T-cell lymphomas of which only isolated cases have been reported. We describe two cases of transformation from T-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma to NHNCγδ PTCL. Transformation into more aggressive disease is a rare event in T-cell lineage-derived hematologic malignancies compared to B-cell neoplasms. Nevertheless, both of our cases involved relapse as PTCL manifested with skin involvement and an overt shift from blastic morphology to large granular leukemia-like mature T cells. Among other notable molecular characteristics, expression of immature markers such as TdT was lost in both cases. Based …
Hypogene Karst Of The Lampasas Cut Plain, Kevin W. Stafford, Stephen F, George Veni
Hypogene Karst Of The Lampasas Cut Plain, Kevin W. Stafford, Stephen F, George Veni
KIP Articles
Classically, epigene processes (unconfined and gravity driven from surface features) were considered the principal means by which caves and karst features were formed. In recent years, the theory of hypogene speleogenesis (confined and hydrostatic pressure driven, independent of adjacent surfaces) has gained both scientific and public support as a valid, and widespread mechanism for karst development in varied terrains. This has led to a revolution in thought related to karst processes and the broad implications of hypogene speleogenesis throughout North America, especially in Texas. As karst scientists and cavers began to view caves and karst processes in light of potential …

Auditory Opportunity And Visual Constraint Enabled The Evolution Of Echolocation In Bats, Jeneni Thiagavel, Clément Cechetto, Sharlene E. Santana
KIP Articles
Substantial evidence now supports the hypothesis that the common ancestor of bats was nocturnal and capable of both powered flight and laryngeal echolocation. This scenario entails a parallel sensory and biomechanical transition from a nonvolant, vision-reliant mammal to one capable of sonar and flight. Here we consider anatomical constraints and opportunities that led to a sonar rather than vision-based solution. We show that bats’ common ancestor had eyes too small to allow for successful aerial hawking of flying insects at night, but an auditory brain design sufficient to afford echolocation. Further, we find that among extant predatory bats (all of …
The Vanishing Body Of Disability Law: Power And The Making Of The Impaired Subject, Jonas-Sébastien Beaudry
The Vanishing Body Of Disability Law: Power And The Making Of The Impaired Subject, Jonas-Sébastien Beaudry
Canadian Journal of Family Law
The influence of disability studies on legal scholarship is most visible in the social model, which claims that people are not disabled because of their bodily impairments, but by society in its refusal to accommodate their impairments.
However, a modest but growing discourse within disability studies argues that the notion of impairment, in addition to disability, is socially constructed. This article aims to bring this problematized conception of impairment, informed by Michel Foucault’s conception of power, into contact with legal scholarship. Judith Mosoff’s sensibility about the role of impairments in the legal treatment of disabled people illustrates this critical outlook, …

Quebec's Filiation Regime, The Roy Report'S Recommendations, And The 'Interest Of The Child', Régine Tremblay
Canadian Journal of Family Law
This article describes Quebec’s filiation regime and explains some of the Roy Report’s recommendations to reform parent-child relationships in Quebec. While this report is unlikely to lead to legislative change, it represents an important insight into issues animating family law in Quebec today. The Roy Report anchors filiation and family law to the ‘interest of the child’, a notion likely different from the best interests of the child in common law. The article offers some critical and comparative analysis of current and proposed rules. It makes this lesser known area of Quebec civil law accessible in English and to common …

(Some) Mothers Know Best: A Case Comment On Mm V Tb And The Plight Of Indigenous Mothers In Child Welfare And Adoption Proceedings, Catherine Wang
Canadian Journal of Family Law
Over time, courts have come to acknowledge the significance of Indigenous identity when deciding custody disputes, but they continue to struggle with how much consideration should be given to the broader history involved, which can leave Indigenous mothers particularly disadvantaged in family law proceedings. Not only do Indigenous mothers have to contend with the law’s general assumptions and expectations about mothers, they also have to endure the courts’ often limited ability to situate mothers’ individual actions in the wider context of structural barriers erected by government and societal forces. A close examination of the recent British Columbia Court of Appeal …

Marital Factors Associated With Weight-Related Behavior In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Jenna Ellison
Marital Factors Associated With Weight-Related Behavior In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Jenna Ellison
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
Obesity is a major health concern in the United States. Whereas bariatric surgery is effective, 10-40% of post-operative patients struggle to reach or maintain their goal weight (Elder & Wolfe, 2007). The current study investigated the within-person relations between marital quality and weight-related behaviors using a daily diary design. Length of relationship, time since surgery, and participant sex were explored as moderators. Participants were 94 post-operative bariatric surgery patients. Eligible participants completed an online baseline questionnaire, followed by a one-week online daily diary in which they responded to questions about the quality of their marriage, whether they engaged in physical …

Distal Urogenital Anatomy Of Male Southern Coal Skinks, Plestiodon Anthracinus Pluvialis (Reptilia: Scincidae), Stanley E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
I investigated the morphology and histology of the distal urogenital anatomy of male southern coal skinks (Plestiodon anthracinus pluvialis) from reproductively active individuals collected in Arkansas in order to provide comparative information with recent studies on squamate urogenital anatomy. Specifically, I focused on the basic anatomy and positioning of posterior ducts in this skink, which included portions of the ductus deferens, the ampulla ductus deferentis, the sexual segment of the kidney, the ureter and collecting ducts, as well as aspects of the urodaeal chamber and urogenital papillae. I found a much reduced ampulla ductus deferentis comprising only 0.7 …

Aquatic Invertebrate Community Structure, Biological Condition, Habitat, And Water Quality At Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri, 2005-2014, David E. Bowles, L. W. Morrison, J. T. Cribbs
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Ozark National Scenic Riverways (OZAR) was established to protect the corridor of the Current River and its major tributary, the Jacks Fork. The Current River is one of the few remaining free-flowing rivers in the U.S., with much of its base flow coming from several large springs. To assess the biological condition of these rivers, aquatic invertebrate community structure was monitored from 2005 to 2014. Benthic invertebrate samples and associated habitat and water quality data were collected from each of nine sampling sites using a Slack-Surber sampler. The Stream Condition Index (SCI), a multimetric index that incorporates taxa richness, EPT …
Winter Surveys Of Cotinus Obovatus (American Smoketree) In The Ozark Mountains, Gary R. Graves
Winter Surveys Of Cotinus Obovatus (American Smoketree) In The Ozark Mountains, Gary R. Graves
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Cotinus obovatus (American smoketree) is a rare deciduous tree with a relictual distribution in southeastern North America. Efforts to map its fine-scale geographic distribution in the Ozark Mountains have been limited to the growing season when the distinctive blooming panicles and foliage facilitate detection in hardwood-cedar woodlands. I describe the physiognomic traits of leafless C. obovatus that permit effective population mapping in winter landscapes. Clumped growth and diagonally leaning stems facilitate detection at a distance. Bark texture, twig morphology, and sap odor confirm the identity of the tree at close range.

Organochloride Pesticides Present In Animal Fur, Soil, And Streambed In An Agricultural Region Of Southeastern Arkansas, Matthew E. Grilliot, John L. Hunt, Christopher G. Sims
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Animals in agricultural settings may be subject to bioaccumulation of toxins. For the last several years, we collected hair samples from bats and rodents in an agricultural area near Bayou Bartholomew in Drew County, Arkansas. Samples were submitted to the Center of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of Connecticut for wide-screen toxin analysis. Several of these samples contained measurable amounts of organochloride pesticides or their metabolites, including some that have been banned for decades, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and chlordane. In addition, we collected several samples of soil from within an agricultural field, from adjacent edge habitat, from …

Loving's Legacy: Decriminalization And The Regulation Of Sex And Sexuality, Melissa Murray
Faculty Articles
2017 marked the fiftieth anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the landmark Supreme Court decision that invalidated bans on miscegenation and interracial marriages. In the years since Loving was decided, it remains a subject of intense scholarly debate and attention. The conventional wisdom suggests that the Court’s decision in Loving was hugely transformative— decriminalizing interracial marriages and relationships and removing the most pernicious legal barriers to such couplings. But other developments suggest otherwise. If we shift our lens from marriages to other areas of the law—child custody cases, for example—Loving’s legacy seems less rosy. In the years preceding and following Loving, …

Congress And The Executive: Challenging The Anti-Regulatory Narrative, Richard L. Revesz
Faculty Articles
Recently, critics of the administrative state have been urging Congress to reassert itself and rein in regulatory action that they maintain is both undesirable as a matter of policy and in violation of constitutional principles. This anti-regulatory position is unwarranted. While regulatory agencies have indeed been more active in recent decades—in part due to increasing gridlock in Congress—the resulting regulatory actions produced large net benefits to the American people and were carried out pursuant to authority delegated by Congress and reviewed by the courts. By contrast, more robust action by Congress, as long as Congress continues to exhibit its current …

Trauma, Depression, And Burnout In The Human Rights Field: Identifying Barriers And Pathways To Resilient Advocacy, Sarah Knuckey, Margaret L. Satterthwaite, Adam Brown

Human rights advocates often confront trauma and stress in their work. They are exposed to testimony about heinous abuses; work in insecure locations; visit physical sites of abuse; review forensic, photographic, and video evidence; directly witness abuses; experience threats; and can also suffer detention, be attacked, or be tortured themselves. Such exposure risks adversely impacting the wellbeing and mental health of advocates. While the human rights field is diverse and work varies widely, most—if not all—advocates are likely directly or indirectly exposed to potentially traumatic events or material in the course of their work. The degree and type of exposure …
